Abstract
The disclosure relates to a method for producing a fermentation product alcohol (butanol) comprising: comprising: (a) providing a feedstock comprising cellulosic material, lignocellulosic material, and mixtures thereof; (b) liquefying the feedstock to create a feedstock slurry, wherein the feedstock slurry comprises sugar (oligosaeeharide), oil, and undissolved solids; (c) separating undissolved solids and oil from the feedstock slurry to generate (i) an aqueous solution comprising oligosaccharides (sugar), (ii) a wet cake comprising undissolved solids, and (iii) an oil phase and recovering the aqueous solution (i), the wet cake (ii), and the oil (iii) as separate streams from the feed stock slurry; (d) contacting the recovered aqueous solution with a fermentation broth in a fermenter; (e) adding a recombinant microorganism comprising a butanol biosynthetic pathway; (f) fermenting the oligosaccharides (sugar) from the aqueous solution (i) in the fermenter to produce butanol, the fermentation product alcohol; and (g) performing in situ removal of the butanol from the fermentation broth as the butanol is produced.
