Abstract

IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A REPLACEMENT OF SILICA ROCK THAT IS USUALLY USED AS A RAW MATERIAL IN THE PRODUCTION OF METALLURGICAL SILICON, THERE ARE PROVIDED A SILICA SAND COMPACT HAVING SUCH SIZE AND STRENGTH AS ALLOW THE COMPACT TO BE TREATED IN THE SAME MANNER AS IN THE CASE OF THE SILICA ROCK, AND A PROCESS FOR EFFICIENTLY PRODUCING THE COMPACT. THE SILICA SAND COMPACT IS FORMED FROM SILICA SAND USING A CALCIUM COMPOUND AS A BINDING AGENT, AND HAS A MEAN GRAIN DIAMETER OF 5 TO 100 MM AND A CRUSHING STRENGTH OF 200 TO 100,000 N. THE SILICA SAND COMPACT CAN BE OBTAINED BY BRINGING A CALCIUM COMPOUND INTO CONTACT WITH A SURFACE OF THE SILICA SAND TO GRANULATE THE SILICA SAND.
