METHOD OF MANUFACTURING GLASS SUBSTRATE FOR MAGNETIC DISK AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING MAGNETIC DISK IN A PRECEDING POLISHING STEP, POLISHING IS PERFORMED IN A MANNER THAT WHILE A 5 POLISHING LIQUID CONTAINING ABRASIVE GRAINS HAVING A LARGE DIAMETER IS SUPPLIED, A GLASS SUBSTRATE AND A SOFT POLISHING PAD ARE RELATIVELY MOVED TO EACH OTHER, WHICH LEADS TO FORMATION OF A SHAPE (SKI-JUMP) OF AN END OF A MAIN SURFACE OF THE GLASS SUBSTRATE BEING PROTRUDED COMPARED WITH A CENTRAL PORTION. IN A SUBSEQUENT POLISHING STEP, A POLISHING LIQUID CONTAINING ABRASIVE GRAINS HAVING A SMALL DIAMETER, AND A POLISHING PAD HAVING HIGH ,10 HARDNESS COMPARED WITH THE SOFT POLISHING PAD ARE USED. AND POLISHING IS PERFORMED SUCH THAT IF A GLASS SUBSTRATE HAVING A FLAT END IS POLISHED, A GLASS SUBSTRATE IS OBTAINED, OF WHICH THE MAIN SURFACE HAS AN END HAVING A SHAPE BEING DESCENDED COMPARED WITH A CENTRAL PORTION (ROLL-OFF). THUS, THE GLASS SUBSTRATE IS CHANGED IN A DIRECTION OF CANCELLING THE SKI-JUMP FORMED IN THE PRECEDING POLISHING STEP, SO THAT AN END SHAPE IS -15 APPROXIMATED TO A FLAT SHAPE.
