Abstract
An oral implement with a handle includes a head with a releasable material (e.g., an oral medicament) and a tissue cleanser for cleaning the soft tissues and removing odor-causing bacteria from the mouth. In one arrangement, the releasable material is disposed on the surface of the tissue cleanser. In one arragement, the releasable material is disposed behind the tissue cleanser. These applications are a continuation in part of the pending United States of America Patent Application No. 10 / 869,922 filed June 18, 2004, entitled "Oral Care Implement" and a partial continuation of the pending application. of the United States of America Serial No. 10 / 601,106 filed June 20, 2003, entitled "Toothbrush with a Language Cleaning Member"; and claims the benefit of Provisional Application of the United States of America No. 60 / 600,701, filed on August 11, 2004, entitled "Incorporation of Sensory Chemicals in Tooth Brushes." FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an implement for oral care with a tissue cleanser and a medicament for making contact with the tissue of the mouth.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
According to the American Dental Association, a major source of bad breath in healthy people are the deposits of microbes on the tongue, where a bacterial coating harbors organisms and waste that contribute to bad breath. The tissue in the mouth, and especially the tongue, is a paradise for the growth of microorganisms. The nature with papillae of the tongue surface creates a unique ecological site that provides an extremely large surface area, which favors the accumulation of oral bacteria. The anaerobic flora and bacteria that reside on the tongue and other soft tissues in the mouth play an important role in the development of chronic bad breath commonly known as halitosis. In general, bacteria produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSC). If there is a sufficient accumulation of sulfur compounds, the result can lead to bad breath and oral malodor.
Even when tongue scrapers have been used in the past, they have not been generally effective, have not been easy, or have not been socially acceptable for use in a public environment. In addition, many of these scrapers can not be easily used to clean another tissue inside the mouth. Despite this the benefits that are going to be gained by cleaning the tissue in the mouth, many users avoid the use of such cleansers due to the lack of comfort and / or ease of use.
Furthermore, it has not been convenient or socially acceptable for users to clean their tongues and other soft tissues in the mouth in public environments, or when going home or away from home.
Therefore, there is a need for improvement for oral care with a tongue cleaner that provides effective removal of bacteria from the tongue and other debris, which maintains the user's comfort, which provides a substance to treat the tissues of the tongue. mouth, be easy to use and socially acceptable and convenient in public environments or on trips. An oral implement that combines the cleaning effects of a tissue cleanser and a medication is also required.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to an oral care implement that includes a tissue cleaner which provides improved cleaning and effective removal of bacteria and micro-waste placed on the surfaces of oral tissue.
In one aspect of the invention, a releasable material is supported on an insoluble tissue cleaner that includes at least one element for contacting the tissue to clean the tissue surface in the mouth. The tissue contact element or elements can be rubbed together with the oral tissue to remove bacteria and debris while a chemical from the material that can be released is released into the mouth of a user. In a preferred embodiment, the material that can be released is provided as an antiseptic and / or a breath freshener for improved cleaning and freshening of the mouth.
In another aspect of the invention, the fabric cleaner is composed of an elastomeric material. In a preferred embodiment, the fabric cleaner is formed as an elastomeric molded element provided with a plurality of exterior protuberances. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Figures 1-5 illustrate an oral care implement 100 with a gripping part or handle 103 and a head 105 for reducing oral malodor and cleaning the tissue in the mouth, such as the tongue, the inner surfaces of the cheeks , of the lips or of the gums. Among other features, the oral care implement 100 allows a convenient use when going to the home or away from home to clean the tissues in the mouth. The head 105 includes both a fabric cleaner 109 and a releasable material 107. The handle 103 is provided so that the user can hold and manipulate the oral implement 100. Even though the handle 103 is generally cylindrical, it may have many different shapes and constructions. Although the head preferably has a rounded or bulbous construction relative to the handle, it may in some constructions simply be a continuous extension of the handle.
As can be appreciated, the oral care implement 100 preferably resembles a palette in its construction for convenience, compact size, ease of use and social acceptance. With this construction, users can easily carry and use the implement without attracting attention themselves or feel conscious about cleaning their mouth, particularly if they are in a public place. In addition, this preferred form of the invention can be easily transported for use while traveling by many active users. Such ease and convenience is a significant benefit for those who wish to clean their mouths before interactions with others, such as work meetings, social engagements, etc. Particularly for those who are traveling, between activities, away from home, or in a public environment.
Referring to Figures 2 and 5, the material that can be released 107 can be any biocompatible drug or chemical suitable for oral use. A preferred example of a breath freshening agent which can be used is triclosan.
In other constructions, the material that can be released can comprise a chemical substance which imparts other benefits. For example, a chemical substance (eg, a perceived by the senses) can be used to provide a biochemical sensory response to the tissue inside the mouth and / or the lips of a user. As an example, a chemical known as capsiason can be used to provide a tingling, a warm massage, or a calming sensation to a user. In another example, the spillanthol can be used to provide a residual tingling sensation as well as benefits of breath freshening. In another example, chamomile and lavender can be used to provide stress relief and relaxation benefits to the user. In another example, a flavoring agent can be used to improve the user's enjoyment during mouth cleaning.
In yet other constructions, the release material 107 may comprise a chemical or a medicament for oral benefits. For example, HUMPHRIES 3 or benzocaine can be used for odor relief. In another example, zo-caine drug types can be used as an appetite suppressant for the treatment of weight loss. In yet another example, the release material may be an aspirin and the like. In an alternate construction, the material that can be released can be a health supplement, such as a vitamin or mineral. Notwithstanding this, a wide variety of other chemicals which provide a medicinal or sensory response can be used with the oral care implement. Also depending on the chemicals, a plurality of chemicals can be combined into tablets or the like of material that can be released for multiple benefits.
The fabric cleaner 109 includes at least one element for contacting the tissue to clean the oral tissue and means for retaining the material that can be released. 107 As shown in the arrangement of Figures 1-5, the tissue cleaner 109 it is preferably formed as a bulbous or disk-like element composed of a docile and soft elastomeric material for a comfortable cleaning and effective removal of bacteria and debris deposited on the tissue in the mouth, such as on the tongue, the inner surfaces of the cheeks, gums and lips. The tissue cleaner 109 also provides an effective massage, stimulation and removal of the epithelial cells of the oral tissue.
The elastomeric material of the fabric cleaner 109 may be any biocompatible elastic material suitable for use in an oral hygiene apparatus. To provide optimum comfort as well as cleaning benefits, the elastomeric material preferably has a hardness property in the range of Shore A8 to A25 hardness. As an example, a preferred elastomeric material is a styrene-ethylene / butylene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS) manufactured by GLS Corporation. However, styrene-ethylene / butylene-styrene block copolymer material from other manufacturers or other materials in and out of the noted hardness range may be used.
The fabric cleaner 109 is preferably configured with a multiplicity of fabric contacting elements 111 (Figure 1 and 3-5), which in a preferred construction is constructed or formed as protuberances, and which will be described hereinafter to purposes of simplicity, such as "protuberances." As used herein, a "protrusion" is meant to generally mean that it includes a column type protrusion (without limitation to the cross-sectional shape of the protrusion) which is erect from a base surface. In a general sense, the protrusion in the preferred construction has a height that is greater than the width at the base of the protrusion (as measured in the longest direction). However, the protuberances may include projections where the widths and heights are approximately the same or where the heights are somewhat smaller than the base widths. In addition in some circumstances (for example, where the protrusion is tapered to a point or includes a base portion tapering to a smaller projection), the base width may be substantially larger than the height.
The protrusions 111 allow mechanical removal of the microflora and other debris from the tongue and from other soft tissue surfaces within the mouth. This microflora can be found in the recesses between the papillae on most of the upper surface of the tongue as well as along other surfaces of soft tissue in the mouth. The elastomeric construction of the fabric cleaner 109 also allows the head 105 to follow the natural contours of the oral tissue surfaces, such as the tongue, cheeks, lips, and gums of a user. In the preferred construction, the protuberances 111 are capable of flexing and bending from their respective vertical axes when lateral pressure is applied during use. As seen in Figures 1 and 4-5, in a preferred embodiment of a fabric cleaner 109, the protuberances 111 are preferably conical shaped essentially conically when other configurations are contemplated. As used herein, "conically shaped" or "conical" is intended to preferably mean that true cones, frustoconically shaped elements and other shapes that are tapered to a narrow end and thus resemble a cone are included regardless of whether or not They are uniform, continuous in their taper or have rounded cross sections. With reference to Figure 4, the base portion 113 of the conically shaped tissue contacting the elements 111 is larger than the corresponding tip portion 115 and has a wider cross-sectional area to provide an effective cutting resistance for supporting the movement of fabric cleaner 109 along a soft tissue surface. In a preferred construction, the thickness or width of the base of the protrusion is 0.64 mm, and preferably within the range of from about 0.51 mm to about 2.00 mm. The tip 115 of the protrusion is 0.127 mm wide and preferably within a range of from about 0.010 mm about 0.75 mm for optimal penetration between the recesses of papillae of a user's tongue. The length or height of the protuberances 111, as measured from the base surface 113 to the tip 115, is preferably 0.91 mm and preferably is within the range from about 0.5 mm to about 2.5 mm, and more preferably a range from 0.75 mm to 1.5 mm. It should be recognized that the above dimensions provided to correspond generally to the typical anatomy of a human language which does not deviate significantly from the norm. As seen in Figure 3, the protuberances 111 are preferably placed in concentric rings, rows or circuits 117 at radial spacings spaced from the center of the head 105. Even when a preferred embodiment of fabric cleaner has been discussed, it should be understood that the benefits of the invention can still be obtained with a wide variety of fabric cleaning constructions. Finally, the fabric cleaner can be formed of a non-elastomeric material or a combination of different materials. In an alternate embodiment, the opposite end 104 of the handle opposite the head 105 can be used for oral hygiene benefits. In the arrangement of the oral care implement 100 shown in Fig. 2, the head 105 preferably includes a base 106 with an opening or cavity 108 of a tissue cleaner 109 (Fig. 1) to hold and stop the non-released form of the material releasable 107. The fabric cleaner 209 includes the tissue contacting elements 211 similar in construction to the protuberances 111 as the fabric cleaner 109. The incorporation of the oral care implement 300 is similar in construction for oral care 100 of Figures 1-5 except that the fabric cleaner 309 holds the material that can be released on its exterior. For example, the tissue cleaner is covered, coated, otherwise enclosed within an oral medicament 307 (see Figure 10). Although a breath freshener coating is preferred, the coating can also be a medicine, a material that can be sensed by the senses or a combination of materials. The fabric cleaner 309 includes contact elements in the similar fabric 311 in construction as the fabric cleaner 109. There are many forms of such a releasable material 307 which can be used over the fabric cleaner 309. Fabric cleaners 109, 209, 309, during use, can be rubbed against the inner surfaces of the lips or cheeks, on various surfaces of the tongue, gums, lips and roof of the mouth and thus providing a desired massage, stimulation and cleaning of several soft tissue surfaces within the mouth. Additionally due to the mechanical interaction of the protuberances, some users may perceive a stimulating tingling sensation on the cheek surfaces leading to a positive user reaction, and even to the enjoyment of a comfortable sensation of the tissue cleaner protrusions as long of soft tissue surfaces in the mouth.
Although a description of preferred constructions of the oral implement has been discussed, it should be understood that the benefits of the invention can be obtained with a wide variety of other constructions. For example, the material composition comprising the fabric cleaner can be incorporated with a material that can be released. In a construction, a chemical such as one that is sensed by the senses can be released from the tissue cleaning material to invoke a biochemical sensory response in the user's mouth. Claims (38)
1. 18. The implement for oral care as claimed in clause 14, characterized in that the material that can be released comprises a chemical which provides a sensory response to the soft tissue surfaces of the mouth.
19. The implement for oral care as claimed in clause 1, characterized in that the releasable material is included in a container that can be broken.

An oral care implement comprising a handle, a flexible tissue cleaner attached to the handle and tissue cleaner having a plurality of fabric contacting elements extending therefrom and a releasable material provided with the cleaner of tissue and that is released inside the mouth of a user during use.
