Zero Stars: Waste of time

My experience with the Cryptopia distribution process managed by Grant Thornton has been extremely frustrating.

The process has been plagued by missed deadlines, poor communication, and a lack of meaningful updates. Creditors have been waiting for years, and many are left feeling completely in the dark about when, or even if, they will receive what they are owed.

What makes this even more disappointing is that there have been other major insolvencies and administrations where liquidators have managed to investigate claims, resolve issues, and distribute funds in a fraction of the time. By comparison, this process feels unnecessarily prolonged, with little visible progress despite the significant fees being charged along the way.

The ongoing delays have had a real impact on people. For many creditors, this isn't just about money—it's years of uncertainty, stress, and frustration. The lack of transparency and accountability only adds to that burden.

At this stage, it feels like the interests of creditors have become secondary to extending the process itself. Creditors deserve clear communication, realistic timelines, and, most importantly, the return of their funds without further unnecessary delay.

After years of waiting, confidence in the management of this distribution process is extremely low.

Stay away from these guys. They manage the cryptopia case where the hackers stole around 10% of user funds in 2019.
Somehow, these guys are legally allowed to steal much more of the user funds than the hackers did.
You couldn't make it up.

My lost funds were recovered with the help of Zent ri Coup s.

Grant Thornton advised to set up a company to refund VAT for our holiday home that we rent out.

We spend in total €6K on fees, tax and to set up the company and they didnt succeed to refund the VAT.

Also they didnt advice how to proceed further but instead they just want to keep your as long as possible on board to let you pay their monthly crazy high fee.

I mean, I dont care to pay high fee for a good accountant which is worth the money however these accountants at Grant Thornton are really the worst ever.

We had our two counselling sessions with Susan Cuddihy, NS office, and cannot speak highly enough about Susan. Our second session was on March 4, 2025. She immediately put us at ease with her pleasant friendly manner, and her extensive knowledge and advice was extremely helpful as we navigate our journey to eventual discharge. We cannot thank Susan enough for her non-judgmental professionalism and would highly recommend her to anyone hesitant to take the important step to financial freedom.

Unfortunatly I had to deal with Sarraneya Baskaran, that was really unpleasant .

Impossible to contact. Received a letter after returning from holiday, no other prior communication or anything else. Had me stressed royally. Would not recommend to anybody with any sanity.

I have had nothing but trouble with this company… the got my taxes done on the last day my payment was due and now they will not pay the interest that they created. Makes know sense how they are in business?

This company does not care at all about their customers. You will pay a completely incompetent accountant $600 an hour to do their job multiple times because they cannot get things right the first or second time.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are doing this on purpose to milk as much out of their customers as possible.

A truly disgusting company and I would strongly urge you to take your business elsewhere.

How RBC could recommend them is beyond me and I hope they look more closely at this company and reconsider their recommendations in the future.

Terrible company, poorly managed. They will extend the assignment on purpose, so they can milk their customers as much as possible. It seems the employees are not even remotely qualified for the jobs.

This is the review I placed this week and still await a reply!!! I just wonder whether anyone reads these reviews and so do they even care and therefore I would start to question your professionalism and integrity.

The service set by this company is so poor, we have requested information concerning the CRA and have not heard anything since April when we gave all our documentation to GT and to this day we await replies having emailed on numerous occasions.
To make the issue even more embarrassing Grant Thornton are still charging us for their services. We are UK citizens working with a Canadian solicitor trying to get answers to our issues with the CRA.

Mr Thornton your service is So so poor!!!!

We have names of employees who are said to be dealing with our case but are refusing to reply to all our emails since April 2023.

I would at least appreciate a reply.

Have mistreated the cryptopia case. Billing millions to clients without getting anything done and delaying all processes to be able to stoke money from the exchange and users

Grant Thornton wasted my money. I am extremely disappointed with their services. In early 2019 the Cryptopia company was hacked it seems some funds (a tiny part) disappeared although they were traceable and Cryptopia was forced to close down without allowing users to log in to transfer their funds permanently.

Subsequently Grant Thornton was appointed as liquidator in 2019. Since more 4 years Grant Thornton has been dragging things out and pocketing millions! A 5 page website (billed at several hundred thousand dollars, i.e. over 800,000 dollars) was created as a so-called portal where Grant Thornton requests information and numerous (discouraging) proofs from the owners so that they can eventually claim their funds. In the meantime an ex-employee was caught embezzling funds from a supposedly blocked user... Since then the situation has not changed. Except that this firm continues to overcharge and justify the withholding of user funds and producing status reports that are more or less copied and pasted together. Grant Thornton states that they cannot return the funds because only a fraction of cryptopia users have come forward to recover their funds - just over 83%. The rest are either deceased, discouraged by the sheer amount of information and evidence requested, or not interested and others simply no longer have access to their requested information. That's where we stand. In the meantime the crypto bull run has come to an end despite the fact that we users whose funds were not stolen have lost a lot of money due to this poor management and incompressible rolling communication.

That is why I clearly do not recommend using the services of Grant Thornton which is in itself extremely disappointing.

All they want is your money.

More than 3 years later my account with CRA is still a mess because of these clowns.

ANY other company has to be better.

Warning: use their service(s) at your peril.

Dont use these people!
Im a member of a association who used Grant Thorton, our staff have committed crimes by moving numbers in the accounts. Our Accountant said so.
But yet, somehow, the guy from Grant Thorton said NO ANNOTATIONS and approved the financial accounting..
When i asked him, how can you approve these lies, he simply replied "I believe its a question of how you are discussing it"
But you see the words in the financial accounting and management report are NOT adding up with the numbers, and then you have the accountant saying that posts are rotated to other categories.
Does that sound like "no annotations" ?!?!

Their advantage is that its really hard to figure out which law they have broken, and if you don't know that, then you cannot report them in my country.
I've spent 2 weeks already just trying to figure out which department handles these types of cases, but most likely i have to pay a lawyer out of my own pocket, just to get these guys to face charges.

If that is even possible..
Do not use Grant Thorton or their representatives!

They are specialist in get paid for doing nothing, for years! They easily make your case neverending. Just regularly issuing invoice for you without any progress on case!

If you want to finish the case before your 96th birthday, look for another company.

Absolutely no progress on Cryptopia liquidation. Greedy scammers who are working as slow as possible in order to get every dollar of the liquidation process paid to them as fees. 80 bitcoin sold for around $50000 each meaning they made $4,000,000 for doing nothing. Disgusting.
