My husband and I hired a little Corolla Hybrid in Auckland for ten days. We were off on a long awaited trip to the Bay of Islands. From the initial check on the website to returning the car at the end of our trip everything was so easy. Mode Rentals were very pleasant and obliging to deal with. The prompt shuttle pick-up from Auckland airport to their depot and again when returning made the whole process so simple and certainly added to the pleasure of our holiday. The car was economical, reliable and in excellent condition. Thank you Mode Rentals!

We recently rented a large 10 seater car from Mode Rentals in Queenstown. We returned the vehicle after hours and was told a week later they had to replace the windscreen due to a scratch. We asked for photos, but they couldn't send any proof the scratch was on the vehicle we rented (just pictures of a scratch). It is also highly questionable if the scratch they showed us warranted the entire windscreen to be replaced. I would not recommend this company as they are dishonest and not trustworthy.

I'd recommend them. This is the second time I've had a long term hire - the first was 3 months and this one was for 4 weeks. I've found the service, the car and the price all to be good value. Appreciated them dropping me off at my motel too.

Great service, friendly, practical, good vibe

The car handover process was very concerning and left us with little confidence in the company’s documentation standards.

Before collection, the company had sent us photos of the car’s existing scratches and damage. However, we were expected to click through each individual photo to verify them, which was inefficient and impractical during collection, especially when trying to properly inspect the vehicle on the spot.

Because the process felt rushed, we asked to go through each scratch carefully before accepting the car. Although the salesperson agreed to document the scratches a second time, she rushed through the process again. When we asked her to slow down so the damage could be properly recorded, she essentially told us she had other work to do.

We also had to point out scratches she had missed during the second round of documentation. Instead of making us feel reassured, the process made us feel dismissed and pressured into accepting the company’s own documentation standards, even though we did not feel those standards were sufficient to protect us as customers.

This is especially concerning because customers may later be blamed or charged for damage that was already present at collection. In our view, the inspection was not thorough, fair, or properly handled.

We strongly advise anyone renting from this company to take their own comprehensive photos and videos of the entire car before driving away. Do not rely solely on the company’s handover process, as it may not adequately protect you if a dispute arises later.

The easiest booking with the option to use the ferry. Plus, the availability of renting a later model hybrid, and the wonderful customer service, through Whatsapp, phone and in person. Highly, recommend!

This car hire company ticks all the boxes. Pick up from airport promptly. Car ready to go. Fabulous little car and good value rental rates. No problems when returning car. Overall the staff were friendly and helpful and efficient, even the young lady in training.
I will certainly use Mode Rentals anytime I am in NZ.

From making the online reservation, to picking up the car, to returning it, the process was seamless. The staff even accommodated my request to change cars at the last minute, even though I ended up sticking with the original car. Highly recommended!

Everything goes straight forward- Car was ready when we reached, paperwork was quick and fast. The communication was clear about documentation expectation and what to do in case of situations and what are the additional services provided.

I had a very bad experience with these people in Auckland and would not recommend them.

When I hired a van, they removed around 15 litres of petrol from it beforehand. When I questioned the staff member, Sunny, he claimed the fuel gauge was faulty and showed full, and told me to return the van with a full tank. I still have photos showing the fuel range at the time of pickup.

However, when I returned the vehicle, another staff member accused me of damaging the bumper underneath, even though I did not hit or damage the vehicle in any way and there was no accident during my hire. Despite this, I was charged $876.

I strongly advise anyone hiring from them to carefully inspect the entire vehicle, including fuel levels and all exterior and underside conditions, before and after use. Otherwise, it may be better to avoid them altogether.

Good service, good price and tidy Car

Great service and an easy rental process. One thing for families to note: the child seat was not pre-installed and used a seatbelt fitting rather than ISOFIX. As visitors arriving after a long flight, we found it challenging to be sure we had fitted it correctly.

The vehicle was in great condition. Picked us up & dropped us off at the airport and the pricing was exceptional. No hidden fees, free 2nd driver & not a ridiculous price for the extra insurance. Would definitely recommend

I've hired several cars through mode over the years and in my experience the vehicles are always reliable.
I feel like there should be a system where its possible to book a specific vehicle if its available. So for example if I wanted a vehicle that has a permanent fixed roof rack, that vehicle could easily be found in the computer system by entering its number plate, and if its available on select dates then it can be allocated to that booking. The same with any calendar booking system for specific hotel rooms etc.

Vehicle was as stated.
Flight delayed so I was then required to pay a after hours fee for being 30 minutes after my stated collection time.
