Good service, but refuelling pricing needs more transparency

Overall, the rental experience was good, but the way the refuelling charges are presented is unnecessarily confusing.
I specifically opted for the additional “Refuelling/recharging service” during booking and paid €27 for it. The description states that you can return the car with any amount of fuel and SIXT will refill it at the normal pump price, with “no refuelling penalties or surprise fees.”
However, the way this option is presented is quite misleading. Seeing a €27 charge for “Refuelling/recharging service” in the prepaid booking gives the impression that you are paying for the convenience of returning the car without refuelling. Only after receiving the final invoice did it become clear that the €27 is purely a service fee, with the actual fuel then charged separately on top.
I understand the pricing structure now, but €27 simply for the service of putting a relatively small amount of fuel into the car feels excessive, particularly when the option is marketed as a convenient way to avoid refuelling penalties and surprise fees.
I was otherwise happy with SIXT and the rental experience, but this particular extra needs to be presented much more transparently during booking so customers clearly understand that the fee itself does not include any fuel whatsoever.

First and probably last rental with SIXT

First and probably last rental with SIXT

The rental itself was perfectly fine. Unfortunately, the way SIXT handled a subsequent traffic fine has completely changed my view of the company.

I fully understand that SIXT is not responsible for traffic regulations or for fines issued by the Spanish authorities. My complaint is about what happened afterwards.

SIXT immediately charged my card a €14 administrative fee and directed me towards Easyfines/Gesthispania, an optional paid intermediary. I then received repeated urgent payment reminders asking me to pay the reduced fine plus an additional Easyfines processing fee.

I wanted to contest the fine, so I repeatedly contacted SIXT and Easyfines asking for very basic information: the complete case file, confirmation of whether the fine had actually been issued in my name, the official statutory deadline, and instructions for exercising my right to contest it directly with the Spanish authority.

Nobody provided a substantive response.

Instead, the automated payment reminders continued.

I formally escalated the matter to SIXT Customer Service and received an acknowledgement under case 20348772 telling me that “no action is required on your part” and that they would respond. They still did not answer my questions.

I then followed SIXT’s recommendation to use their Live Chat, only to be quoted a waiting time of approximately 24 minutes.

Eventually the Easyfines payment deadline expired and I received another automated email explaining that my details would now simply be transferred to the Spanish authority, which would subsequently issue the actual penalty notice and instructions.

In other words, after days of urgent payment reminders, the deadline I was being pressured about was the deadline for using the Easyfines payment service — precisely the distinction I had repeatedly asked SIXT to clarify.

The whole process felt coercive: repeated urgent payment demands, additional fees, and virtually no meaningful assistance when I asked how to exercise my right to contest the fine or deal directly with the authority.

I don’t expect a rental company to make my traffic fines disappear. I do expect it to answer straightforward questions when it charges me an administration fee for supposedly handling them.

This was my first experience with SIXT and, given the way this has been handled, it will probably be my last.

1/5 for the post-rental customer service experience

Very poor experience with Sixt Palma de…

Very poor experience with Sixt Palma de Mallorca.

The main issue wasn’t even the car, the biggest issue was Daniel’s attitude and behaviour. From the beginning, he was rude, sarcastic and confrontational. He repeatedly refused to listen to what we were saying and instead argued with us rather than trying to resolve the situation.

We had booked a specific car. Daniel tried to give us a smaller, cheaper car with worse fuel efficiency, even though there appeared to be several cars of the model we had booked in the parking area. I completely understand being given an equivalent alternative when the booked car genuinely isn’t available — that has happened to me with Sixt before and was handled very well. But that clearly didn’t seem to be the case here.

What was most unacceptable was Daniel threatening to cancel our reservation and leave us without a car simply because we questioned what we were being offered. That felt like retaliation and was extremely unprofessional.

This wasn’t a difficult situation that couldn’t be resolved — it was made difficult by the way Daniel chose to deal with us.

I’ve been a repeat Sixt customer, but after being treated this way, I’ll think twice before using Sixt again.

Very disappointing experience with Sixt. At drop-off, we were charged extra because they claimed the fuel tank was not 100% full, even though we had refueled at a gas station just 10 km before returning the car.

What makes this particularly frustrating is that the vehicle was not provided to us with a 100% full tank in the first place. Despite this, Sixt still applied additional charges at return.

We expected a fair and transparent rental process, but instead ended up disputing questionable fuel charges. Based on this experience, I would not recommend Sixt and will think twice before renting from them again.

DO NOT RENT A CAR AT SIXT

What started as a great rental experience turned into an absolute nightmare.

On day 3/4 of our rental, we got a flat tyre. We immediately called SIXT and were specifically told someone would come to repair the tyre and, if that wasn’t possible, arrange a taxi for us.

Instead, after waiting for around an hour, a tow truck from another company arrived and simply took the car away. The driver told us he could not arrange a taxi. This left four young women stranded at a gas station with our short clothes and no car.

What followed was approximately 3.5 HOURS of waiting at the gas station, including hours in the dark. We had to keep calling SIXT ourselves and were repeatedly told a taxi was “almost there” or that someone would call us back.

We finally left around 11 PM and arrived at Málaga Airport at approximately 12:30 AM.

Unfortunately, it somehow got worse.

SIXT gave us a replacement car, but after only about 15 minutes of driving, an ENGINE MALFUNCTION warning appeared. We had to turn around and drive all the way back to the airport again.

The other replacement cars offered to us were significantly smaller or were missing features our original car had. This was a major issue because there were four of us travelling with four large suitcases.

Eventually, at around 3 AM, we accepted a car that had enough luggage space and Apple CarPlay — but it was absolutely filthy. There was food on the floor and the entire car smelled strongly of McDonald’s. Even the SIXT employee acknowledged the smell and apologised. We have photos showing the condition in which the car was given to us.

At that point, we were simply too exhausted to continue. Our problems had started at around 7:30 PM and we eventually arrived home at approximately 4:30 AM — around NINE HOURS later.

Because the driver was exhausted and we still had around 1.5 hours to drive, we took the toll road to get home as quickly and safely as possible. We were told SIXT would contact us regarding possible reimbursement of these costs. Nobody did.

We were also promised that a nearby SIXT branch would contact us the following day to exchange the car since this one was disgusting. Again, nobody did.

To make matters worse, we have now also been charged additional rental days and fuel costs that we dispute. The original car did not appear to have a completely full tank when we received it, so we do not understand why we should pay for fuel that may have been used by a previous renter.

I completely understand that SIXT cannot prevent a flat tyre. That is not the main reason for this review. The problem is how terribly the situation was handled afterwards: leaving four women stranded for hours, poor communication, broken promises, a replacement vehicle with an engine malfunction, unsuitable replacement options, and finally giving us a dirty vehicle in the middle of the night.

This situation cost us around nine hours, continued until 4:30 AM, and affected the following day of our holiday because we were completely exhausted.

For the amount of money customers pay to rent from a large international company like SIXT, I expected a completely different level of roadside assistance and customer service.

We have submitted a formal complaint and expect SIXT to properly investigate what happened, correct the disputed charges, reimburse the toll costs as discussed, and provide appropriate compensation.

Very disappointing experience with SIXT Spain.

On the way to returning the car at Koln-Bonn we were trying to book the refuelling service but the App said we were not allowed although the delivery time still had not passed. Sixt has charged 240€ to refuel 30liters of gas. It seems in their Terms and agreement they can charge 8€ per liter and customer must still be happy and comprehensive. But we did try to tick the refuellings service and the person receiving the car too and it was not allowing us to do it. Therefore thanks Sixt

Deceptive & unprofessional. AVOID!

I used this business on 20th July to rent a small van overnight. On the 12th AUGUST they sent me a bill for damage not done by me. Over 3 WEEKS later. There is no proof when the damage was done or when it was discovered. I challenged their accusation & they didn´t reply at all then two weeks later they illegally took the money from the my account. DO NOT USE.

DO NOT TRUST! I rented a van off them & three weeks later they sent me an invoice for damage done (by someone else!) I emailed to say I hadn´t done any damage & had photos to prove it. Two weeks later they just took money from my account without answering my challenge. I had to take photos of the damage already done to the van BEFORE I drove it! THIS COMPANY IS THIRD RATE!

Pricey and a scam same as all other car rentals

This is about Sixt in Girona Airport. The first car they gave me got the "check engine" light after driving like 40 km, so I had to take it back. It was also full of bumps and scratches, and had a missing knob in the radio to control the volume.

After giving it back, even though I had to interrupt my trip by going back into the original office which was the opposite way of my hotel in Barcelona (so a detour of around 1 hour), they made me fill up the petrol in the car, or threatened me with a fine. I wanted to cancel the rest of the days in the reservation and not get a new car, but my husband convinced me otherwise because of our plans.

The replacement car was returned at the end of our trip without any issues, though we had to request to return it one hour later by calling customer service (it ended up being about 40 mins late only) and they specified in the phone call that this wouldn't have any additional cost. Now I checked my car and they charged me €50 extra I don't even know why! I sent them a ticket yesterday asking about that extra charge but of course they haven't replied.

NEVER TRUST SIXT SPAIN

NEVER TRUST SIXT SPAIN – take photos before and after your rental

Be extremely careful when renting from SIXT Spain. Take detailed photos and videos of the entire car both before and after your rental.

We returned our car at Bilbao Airport and handed the keys directly to a SIXT employee. He said everything was fine and wished us a good flight. No damage was mentioned and the car was not inspected together with us.

Later, SIXT claimed they had found scratches. Their own documents show that the inspection record was created after we had already returned the car and left. I was not present during the inspection and never signed any document accepting the alleged damage.

Despite formally disputing the claim, SIXT charged my card.

I have initiated a chargeback with my bank and, if necessary, will submit the case to ECC-Net and consumer protection authorities.

My advice: never return a SIXT car without taking detailed photos and videos first. Do not rely on an employee simply telling you that everything is fine.

I will update this review when the case is resolved.

Consider Renting Elsewhere

We rented a car from Sixt while our family was on vacation in Spain last month.  Today we received a fine for
NO RESPETAR LAS RESTRICCIONES DE
CIRCULACIÓN DERIVADAS DE LA ZBE DE ESPECIAL
PROTECCIÓN DISTRITO CENTRO
This driving rule is unique to Spain and should have been explained BEFORE renting the car.  The Sixt agents knew we were foreign because of our driver's license. They also knew we would be driving through the restricted area, which is apparently the entire tourist area in Madrid.  It is unethical not to explain this rule.

Sixt then charged us 15 euros for being ticketed, and an additional 24.20 euros to assist in paying the 100-euro ticket.

We also returned the car a few hours before it was due, but the person didn't record the return properly. We then spent hours on the phone, during our vacation, getting it resolved because they were trying to charge late fees.

Do not rent a car from Sixt at Palma…

Do not rent a car from Sixt at Palma Airport. The queue was horrendous when we arrived. They did not have enough people to deal with the number of bookings they had and we wasted an eternity waiting for them to get through everyone. They have clearly been investing in pricing/deals but can't handle the demand. Other providers had far, far smaller queues.

On top of that, the process on returning the car is broken. There was noone to check-in the car and weeks later we were sent a payment request for damage that we had categorically not done. It was a nightmare liaising with them afterwards to explain and attempt to rectify this. While speaking to them to resolve over several weeks we were being threatened with debt collection companies.

Awful, awful.

I was caught out by small print

I was caught out by exceeding an exceptionally low mileage limit that wasn't expressed clearly to me at the time of purchase. Given I had already paid a fee to collect the car from Malaga and drop it off in Seville, you would not expect there to be a mileage limit that is less that the distance between these two places. I rent in Spain very frequently and have never experienced this. It was very much a 'gotcha' move by SIXT and yes, whilst they've technically made another $20 out of me, they've lost my business forever.

**€99 cancellation fee

**€99 cancellation fee with no transparency**

Very disappointing experience with SIXT.

I cancelled a prepaid reservation and received only a partial refund because SIXT deducted a **€99 cancellation fee**.

I contacted customer support and specifically asked them to show me **where this €99 fee had been clearly displayed before I confirmed and paid for the booking**.

The agent initially claimed that the fee had been “clearly displayed”. However, when I asked for the exact screen, wording, or booking step, the same agent admitted that they **could not provide any evidence, screenshot, or record showing where the €99 fee was presented to me**.

I then disputed the charge and asked for the complaint to be escalated to a supervisor or formal complaints team and requested a case/reference number. Instead of addressing those requests, the agent simply kept repeating that the fee was “company policy” and could not be refunded.

A €99 cancellation charge is substantial. If SIXT considers it clearly disclosed, they should be able to demonstrate exactly where the customer sees it before payment.

Very poor transparency and an extremely frustrating customer service experience.

We had the most awful experience and…

We had the most awful experience and still waiting for our deposit to be repaid. We had the car for less than 24 hours and had a tyre blow on the motorway which we luckily managed to get into a petrol station. Four hours of trying to speak to sixt and get support - long periods on hold, two small children and a hot sun we took a taxi back to our apartment and then had to wait two days to get the car picked up and fixed. This took us to the end of the rental period and with multiple taxis to the car hire rental to try to resolve we have ended up hugely out of pocket with none of the service (with extra insurance) that we paid for. Responsiveness from the Estepona branch and branch manager (Marta) has been beyond band with multiple promises to ‘call us back’, ‘solve the problems’ not materialising, no response to emails and in the end we’ve hired a car from Avis which has been seamless. I’ve still paid €700 for a four day car hire and been provided with a car for less than 24 hours and had half my deposit removed! Terrible terrible service from Estepona SIXT.

Extra charges and faulty car

I rented a car for a week. The pickup at Madrid Airport went well.
When I had to go back to the airport, the car gave a “faulty engine, repair needed” warning. After googling this, google told me to stop the car. I could not do this as I still needed to get to the airport to catch my flight. When I told the people at the airport rental, they did not care at all.
After filing a complaint with customerservice they want to give me a 40 euro voucher for Sixt, but I do not feel like I will ever rent a car with them again.
Also I got charged 80 euros more than stated when I rented the car. I booked only and put in a pickup time (11.00) and returntime (13.30). I have a picture of the car at 13.19 but I am still getting charged for a late return.
Would recommend to document everything when renting here, as I feel like they don’t have a great system here!
Also I still did not receive my 300 euro’s hold back!
