Disappointed
We were looking forward to our trip to Filitheyo but were disappointed with the experience. We have been to the Maldives a number of times previously but when we arrived at Filitheyo we found the room we had booked (superior) to be anything but superior. We expected the room to be located on the beach as shown in the photographs, but our room was not on a beach. Outside the room there was 10 meters of dense trees which met with sea. There was no beach what-so-ever, at the waters edge there were large rocks and stones which made it impossible to enter the sea at that point. Despite the rocks and stones the location of the room was on a part of the island where you cannot enter the sea due to strong currents, so we were unable to go in the sea or sit on the beach. There were sun beds allocated to the room in amongst the trees, but as the area was north west facing and due to the large amount of trees, there was no sun what-so-ever at any point of the day. We went to the Maldives for the sun and the sea. On walking around the Island, it was noted that there were 50 of the 80 superior graded rooms that were in a similar location. We asked to be moved to another location which we were but only after spending 7 days in our original room. We were bitterly disappointed, and had we known the location of the room would be like this would have chosen an alternative Island. There was nothing superior about the room and feel it should be graded and priced differently to other rooms that were in a lovely location. The restaurant and food was nice, but it was disappointing that you could not get a drink with the meals without paying extra, not even water. All drinks and food including water were very expensive.
The best thing about the Island was the house reef which was amazing for snorkeling, we saw sharks, turtles, eagle rays and allsorts of reef fish every day, the coral was amazing, but the resort should try to be more proactive in preventing snorkelers from standing on the coral in their fins, as the damage to the reef will not recover.
The diving was ok but to be honest the snorkeling was just as good and it wasn't worth paying $76 dollars per dive plus extras if you went on the boat. The dive centre management were disappointing and unfriendly. They had many rules (not regarding safety as we agree with all those) e.g if you wanted to dive you had to go to the dive centre between 2:30 and 5pm to write your name on the list. Some of the dive centre staff were also very ignorant e.g if you said good morning to them in the restaurant, they would ignore you, then try to promote a dive trip to you an hour later in the dive centre, it doesn't work like that. Needless to say we did less than half the dives we intended to do.
Once we changed rooms it was on a lovely location and we enjoyed the holiday, mainly down to the fantastic house reef, but we would not go to this island again with the chance of being allocated a room in a similar location. It was definitely not worth the £11,000 we spent on this holiday.
