Ask a car buyer in India what they expect today, and they won't say "AI." They'll just expect the car to already know them — and expect someone to pick up the phone when they call.
A few things I keep noticing:
→ The showroom conversation hasn't changed — exchange offer, finance rate, delivery date. But underneath it, buyers now assume the car itself should be smarter: track its own health, personalise itself, flag problems before they become breakdowns.
→ That assumption shows up quietly, long before the car does. A customer messages a dealership at 9pm asking if a variant's in stock, or calls about a service issue after hours. Increasingly, it's an AI voice agent that answers — not a missed call and a callback the next morning. Nobody posts about this. It's just the difference between a lead that converts and one that goes cold.
→ 95% of Indian consumers say they'd pay extra for software-defined vehicle capabilities — safety intelligence, continuous health reporting, over-the-air upgrades. They didn't learn this from a car ad. They learned it from their phone, their bank, their food delivery app.
→ Indian enterprises are already ahead of the global AI curve in general — 40% run it at real scale, vs ~28% worldwide. The capability exists. It just hasn't reliably reached the showroom floor, the service bay, or the after-hours call.
→ It's also why the tools being built right now look different from the AI conversation of two years ago. Some of the work we're doing internally is less about chatbots and more about giving OEMs and dealer teams a real-time read on where the funnel is actually leaking. The shift isn't "add AI." It's "let AI see the whole business, not just the front door."
→ The capital has already made up its mind: India's automotive AI market is set to nearly triple by 2032, off a $185B base that makes India the world's third-largest auto market.
The dealerships and OEMs still asking "will Indian buyers care about AI" are asking last year's question. The buyer already answered it. The only open question is who closes the gap first.
