Since its inception in 2016, the Atal Innovation Mission has taken a lifecycle approach to nurture innovation – targeted programmatic interventions across the innovation value chain and across the lifecycle of an innovator. AIM has built a connected pipeline - a continuum: from school-level makerspaces and tinkering labs to structured incubation centres and community innovation centres, extending to national programs, sectoral initiatives, and global partnerships. This full-stack approach not only established the infrastructure critical mass that India's innovation ecosystem needed but sowed the seeds of building scientific temper in school students. A decade on - the focus is on addressing the current and new needs of the innovation ecosystem, addressing the policy objectives of the Indian innovation ecosystem, and moving from output to outcome and impact. Hot Take - As the technology and development-sector ‘elites’ are converging on Delhi for the India AI Impact Summit, I am concerned about the future of global health. If global health is not anchored first in its moral purpose: improving people’s physical, mental, social, and environmental wellbeing, we risk allowing AI and the funding currents around it, to determine our priorities. In doing so, we may build a sector shaped by tools and incentives rather than by the futures we are ethically obligated to create. This is why I believe it is imperative to shift the conversation away from how to use AI, and back to a more fundamental question: why do we want to use it at all?

Five hundred startups. One million lives touched. That’s the scale of the ecosystem Prateek Madhav has helped stitch together in India’s assistive-technology landscape. An alumnus of NIT and IIM Calcutta, Prateek stepped away from an 18-year corporate tech career to build what would become the AssisTech Foundation (ATF), now the country’s largest platform for disability-focused innovation. Under his watch, ATF has nurtured a portfolio of 54 startups that have collectively developed more than 120 products and secured over 50 patents, creating a pipeline of ideas that travel from prototype to real-world impact. His influence has stretched well beyond the foundation’s walls. Prateek has served on the Steering Committee of The Royal Society in London and on NITI Aayog’s panel for India’s National Strategic Framework on Assistive Technology, anchoring him firmly as one of the key voices shaping how India imagines the future of inclusive innovation.
