    I am a part of the prestigious Microsoft 4Afrika Initiative – a new effort through which the company will actively engage in Africa’s economic development to improve its global competitiveness.

    This is a multi-year initiative that represents our increased commitment to Africa as we celebrate 20 years of doing business on the continent. The world has recognized the promise of Africa, and Microsoft wants to invest in that promise. As we look forward to our next 20 years, we wanted to explore new ways to link the growth of our business with initiatives that accelerate growth for the continent. To do this, we are focusing on three critical areas – World-class skills, Access and Innovation.

    The goal is to empower every African who has a great idea for a business or an application and to turn that idea into a reality which in turn can help their community, their country, or even the continent at large. The Microsoft 4Afrika Initiative is built on the dual beliefs that technology can accelerate growth for Africa, and Africa can also accelerate technology for the world.

    STUDSAT (STUDent SATellite) is a unique satellite technology endeavour undertaken by the Under-Graduate students of India. STUDSAT-1 is the first Pico-Satellite launched by India, and it is even more special, as this project has been developed by Under-Graduate students from seven different Academic Institutions, under the guidance of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). A lot of applause and acclamation was received by STUDSAT-1 from every other academic organization which includes the IITs. Having a consortium of seven colleges with Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (NMIT) as the lead institute, we are interested to take up the next satellite project STUDSAT-2 so as to continue the tradition of developing satellites using latest technologies. STUDSAT is the smallest operational satellite launched by ISRO. The mission of the satellite is experimental in nature, but the major objective of this mission is to enable students to have hands-on experience on Space technology by involving them in the design, fabrication and implementation of a full-fledged space mission at a nominal budget.
