I’m really excited to share that I’ve been accepted onto the MSc Digital Transformation at the University of Hull. Cohort 2026. It’s a strange feeling, because in many ways I’ve been doing this for most of my career. Since the late 1990s, I’ve worked across technology, supply chain, manufacturing and enterprise systems — implementing, designing and transforming complex business processes and technology landscapes across multiple countries and industries. Smashing in the hours with personal sacrifices. I’ve been a client, consultant, solution architect, business analyst, technology leader and, for a time, ran my own consulting business. Ive been told I’m academic and intimidating perceived as a genius ( all not true or in keeping with my own self awareness).I’ve worked through major system implementations, acquisitions and migrations, designed global planning solutions, replaced legacy systems and reduced technical debt, supported manufacturing and supply chains, and spent a lot of time helping people understand not just what technology can do, but why it matters. Digital transformation has been a constant thread throughout all of that. I’ve helped organisations do it. I’ve advocated for it. I’ve evangelised it. I’ve challenged people to think differently about what technology could enable. And now, particularly working in pharma, the reason for doing it feels even more important. Because ultimately, transformation isn’t about implementing another system or adopting the latest technology. It’s about using technology, data, processes and — most importantly — people to make things better. Better businesses. Better ways of working. Better decision-making. And ultimately, better outcomes for patients. After so many years of learning through experience, I’m now looking forward to stepping back and going deeper — exploring the research, theory and thinking behind digital transformation, challenging some of my own assumptions and bringing together academic learning with everything I’ve learned in the real world. It feels less like starting something new and more like putting some academic depth behind a passion and career that have been developing for decades. I’m incredibly excited for this journey in my 50th year. It feels like a pivotal moment personally and in the tech landscape. This shows I’m going hard for the next 15 years and Same passion. More questions. Deeper learning. Bigger impact. Yesterday I finished up my 8 month placement as a Human Resource Co-Op in Stryker Anngrove! Over the past 8 months I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside an amazing team in Carrigtwohill! I’ve had the opportunity to get involved in different HR projects, volunteer in the organisation of community events like the Stryker Road Run, and make connections and friends that will last for life! Another highlight during my time, was organising and hosting a site tour of Anngrove for co-ops from the Cork and Limerick sites, to see what we do. A special thank you to Kornelia Cybul, I am so grateful for all the support and knowledge you’ve given me over the past 8 months! The US holds 47% of global pharma market cap. Switzerland, 14%. The UK, 7%; India and China, under 1% each. At first glance, that chart looks like it answers "who controls global pharma." It doesn't—and the gap between what it shows and what it's read as is the more interesting story. Market cap measures investor expectations, not drug output, revenue, or manufacturing capacity. US large caps trade at premiums partly because of the sheer depth of US capital markets—pension and 401(k) flows alone push multiples higher than European or Asian peers see for comparable businesses. It's also a mixed bag: CVS Health is a pharmacy benefits manager, not a drugmaker. Lonza and WuXi AppTec are contract manufacturers—supply chain businesses, not IP holders—sitting inside a ranking framed as "who controls the drugs." That last point matters more than the valuation gap itself. The real concentration risk in pharma isn't in market cap—it's upstream, in active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufacturing, where a large share of the world's generic drug inputs trace back to a small number of facilities in India and China. That's the dependency that actually shows up when a single-source supplier has a quality hold, a geopolitical disruption, or an export restriction: shortages, not stock corrections. So the more useful question isn't which country's companies investors value highest. It's where the physical capacity to actually make medicine sits, how concentrated it is, and what happens to patients if that concentration gets disrupted. IP and valuation live in the US and Switzerland. A meaningful share of the manufacturing that turns that IP into an actual pill lives somewhere else entirely.
