Digital twins for commercial manufacturing are coming! Plants are moving from dashboards to decision support. Early fault detection is becoming real. We have more biological data than any team can look at closely, and the twin is how you scale scientific attention. 2. Cutting PC experiments is a top R&D goal. Process characterization for harder platforms can mean hundreds of runs, each one expensive. Cutting that number meaningfully saves millions per PC. 3. Sensing is expanding fast Raman use is going up, and it's going well beyond glucose and lactate. Alyssa Melville (Biogen) presented Raman for pH. That means less probe-drift risk and no offline sample, which is a contamination risk in manufacturing. The sensors panel with Alexander Williams (Bristol Myers Squibb), Bingyu Kuang (AbbVie), and Jacob Crowe ( Hamilton Company) set the bar: a sensor has to deliver more value than risk. 4. Modeling is still a tale of two cities. Some companies are all in and showing major value. Others are still convincing senior leadership it's worth the time. I think case studies are how you convince the hesitant. Jesse Fisher ( Gilead Sciences) traced a 30% titer gap to a single parameter, pCO2, and closed it. Aditya Walvekar (Genentech) used numerical optimization to rebalance media. Those are the stories that move people. #Bioprocessing #Biomanufacturing #DigitalTwin #PAT

During my five years of study I’ve overcome more challenges than I could have imagined, and built a depth and breadth of knowledge that I look forward to continuing to develop. I’m excited to be returning to Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. , joining the process engineering team as part of the AstraZeneca rotational graduate programme.

Nick Bevan liked thisNick Bevan liked thisIn July of 1991, I was hiding in the back of a van heading for Heathrow, dressed as a pirate, complete with an eyepatch and parrot on my shoulder. It was in the height of British Airways Dirty Tricks campaign, where they were trying to sabotage Virgin Atlantic and squash the competition we had created. It was also the days of the Concorde - the jewel of British Airways fleet. British Airways had spent years fighting to stop Virgin Atlantic flying from Heathrow when we finally managed to persuade the government to let us compete. To celebrate, we slipped a giant silk sock emblazoned with the Virgin logo over the model Concorde aircraft that sat at the entrance to Heathrow. We put up a banner that said: 'Virgin Territory’ and the press captured photos of me dressed as a pirate in front of it. We had taken over BA's most potent utility symbol and hit the front pages. Everyone knew we had arrived at Heathrow. One senior British Airways employee said: “It's not the way serious people are supposed to behave. Proper businessmen are supposed to spend their time looking after their airlines, not farting about in fancy dress and floating around in balloons.” When they go low, sometimes it’s better to keep things light.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to join an organization with such an important mission and global impact, and I look forward to working with the talented people across CSL to help deliver lifesaving medicines to patients around the world. I also want to thank the people of IMVAX. Working with an exceptional team to advance new treatments for glioblastoma was deeply meaningful, and I’m very proud of what we accomplished together. I wish the IMVAX team every success as they continue the effort. I’m excited for this next chapter and grateful to everyone who has been part of the journey.

Nick Bevan liked thisNick Bevan liked thisI’m extremely proud to announce that yesterday we celebrated a major milestone for sustainability at Alexion and AstraZeneca. We’re leading the pack as the first pharmaceutical company in Ireland to commit our Dublin and Athlone sites to 100% renewable biomethane for heating, supporting resilient supply of life-changing rare disease medicines and advancing our global Ambition Zero Carbon programme. Through a fifteen-year gas purchase agreement with Carbon AMS, biomethane produced at the new Duleek facility using grass silage from local farmers will supply at least 32GWh of biomethane per year to the Alexion Operations sites, equivalent to 6.3% of AstraZeneca’s global gas consumption, and displacing approximately 5,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions per year. Thank you to our teams, especially @Brian Mulchinock, @Carbon AMS, and our farming contributors for your collaboration on this pioneering renewable energy project.
