Laura Ahern a republié ceciLaura Ahern a republié ceci📖✨ A true pinch-me moment. ✨📖 Recently, I had the opportunity to launch my children's book with colleagues, friends, and family, and I've been overwhelmed by the kindness, encouragement, and support I've received. ❤️ This book was created to help children understand, in a simple and engaging way, the journey of how medicines are made and the many people involved in bringing them to patients. 🔬💊 But for me, it has always been about much more than just a book. It's about sparking curiosity 💡, making science accessible 🧪, and helping children see that innovation starts with asking questions. ❓ It's also the achievement of a personal goa taking an idea that started as a simple thought and turning it into something tangible that can educate, inspire, and hopefully make a difference. 🌟 I am incredibly grateful to Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine Ireland for supporting me and giving me the opportunity to bring this idea to life. 🙏 Working in an environment that encourages people to think differently, explore new ideas, and pursue meaningful projects is something I never take for granted. Seeing the book in the hands of children 📚 and hearing the positive feedback from families has been the most rewarding part of this journey. Laura Ahern a republié ceciLaura Ahern a republié ceciTreatment options for some types of #BladderCancer haven't seen meaningful change in decades…until now. Today, I’m proud and humbled to share that Johnson & Johnson has received FDA approval for our treatment for patients with certain types of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). As a practicing urologist, I’ve had countless conversations with patients facing a bladder cancer diagnosis. I saw their frustration. I shared it. We knew we needed a better way, not just incremental change, but a bold reimagining of how we deliver therapy to the bladder. It’s what pushed me to make the leap from clinical practice to the start-up world, to uncover a better way for patients. Together with academia and industry partners, we set out to develop a new drug delivery system designed to extend local delivery of a cancer drug directly into the bladder. Current bladder treatments can be limited, as medications stay in the bladder for less than an hour at a time and may not reach all areas, while systemic treatments often struggle to access the inner lining where most bladder tumors originate. Perseverance and resilience fueled our every step. When Johnson & Johnson acquired TARIS Biomedical, we gained a partner equally committed to transforming bladder cancer care. By harnessing decades of experience, scale, and focus on innovation, Johnson & Johnson has propelled our vision forward in ways no other company could. We both broadened and accelerated our vision and brought it to life in a way that could truly reach patients. This approval is more than just a professional milestone—it’s a reminder of why I made this shift in the first place. It’s proof that when you listen to patients, trust your clinical instincts, and keep pushing forward, progress happens. And this is just the beginning. We’re building toward a future where bladder cancer treatment is more targeted, less invasive, and centered on preserving what matters most to patients. It has been a great privilege for me to work for over 40 years in a business that is all about saving and treating patients. As I retire I would like to recognise all those that helped me, inspired me and challenged me. First to my family, without their unwavering love and support, I could not have committed all the energy and time necessary to fulfil the various roles that I had. Next to my amazing colleagues and leaders who do fantastic work and have enabled us to develop, manufacture and deliver vital medicines to our patients. I am very proud of all that we achieved together. In a pharmaceutical manufacturing supply chain there are many people and disciplines necessary to make it happen, not just within the manufacturing site but also through the external supports that sometimes do not get enough recognition. I want to highlight the people in Governments, Regulatory Authorities, Industry Associations, Academic Institutions, Schools, Engineering, Specialist Services and many more, that I see are vital to enabling us to bring medicines through development to patients. There is a specific group that also needs to be recognised in the treatment of patients. The doctors, nurses and emergency services professionals who daily work at the front line to look after patients. They were always in our thoughts as we sought to deliver treatments that would help them achieve great outcomes for patients. Over my career I have seen many advancements in medicine and technology to treat and in some cases to cure diseases. However, a lot more needs to be achieved and I encourage all involved to continue the journey to treat and ultimately prevent these diseases. To quote Dr. Paul Janssen “Our Patients are waiting”. Laura Ahern a aimé ceciLaura Ahern a aimé ceciI was delighted to visit Johnson & Johnson’s Limerick site yesterday afternoon, joined by my colleague Senator Dee Ryan. Johnson & Johnson has had a presence in Ireland since 1935 and today employs more than 6,000 people across its Innovative Medicine and MedTech operations. In Limerick alone, more than 1,600 people are part of a team producing an incredible 3.5 billion contact lenses every year. It was great to meet some of the team and learn more about the technology and expertise behind an operation of this scale. Visits like this are a great opportunity to see the strength of Ireland’s life sciences sector and the innovation taking place across the country. Many thanks to John Fitzgibbon and the Johnson & Johnson team in Limerick for the warm welcome and for taking the time to show us around.

Proud to see SAP Business Network Supply Chain Collaboration (SCC) successfully deployed across the J&J IM Supply Chain. It's especially rewarding to see an idea evolve from a business case into a capability delivering real business value in just 18 months. What started as a vision to improve collaboration across our supplier network has become a reality through the dedication of teams across Procurement, Planning, Manufacturing, Logistics, Digital Technology, and our External Suppliers and CMOs. SCC is much more than a technology deployment. It enables forecast sharing with suppliers, supports Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) and Consignment, and streamlines incoming material Quality Collaboration. Together, these capabilities will help improve supplier reliability, strengthen strategic partnerships, reduce price leakage, and drive greater efficiency for both J&J and our suppliers. Large transformations are never the result of one individual. Congratulations and thank you to everyone who contributed to this important milestone. This episode features Oliver and Maeve Blackwell, who so generously shared their family’s story and spoke about their beloved son, David. We are deeply grateful to Oliver and Maeve for their openness, honesty and courage in allowing us to hear about David, their grief, their memories, and the lasting impact he continues to have on their family and on FirstLight. Oliver is FirstLight’s Chairperson and has supported the organisation for the past 13 years. His leadership, commitment and care for bereaved families have made an enormous contribution to FirstLight. However, at the heart of this episode is David, and the story of a much-loved son whose memory continues to inspire love, service, hope and connection. The Many Voices of FirstLight podcast series will be released in September. Through this series, we hope to honour the voices, stories and experiences of bereaved families, volunteers, supporters and those who have helped shape FirstLight’s work over the past 50 years. Laura Ahern a aimé ceciLaura Ahern a aimé ceciI’m celebrating 9 years at my job of Mother today 🙌 - definitely the most challenging role I have ever had! I am pleased to say that I have not given in my notice at this job and continue to show up most days, even in the face of being told that I am an embarrassment to the bosses or that they have continually breach policies of cleanliness & hygiene. It isn’t an easy job, and we need to recognise that. And recognise that we cannot expect workers (Dads as well as Mams) to work pretending they don’t have caring responsibilities. If they are doing this, chances are there’s damage being done at home. I have only recently started to be honest with clients what can and cannot be done so that there is something left of me for my children. I have started to take Fridays off so I can be with them. I earn less as a result, but that’s ok…I only have 28 years left on Celtic tiger mortgage 🤪🤪🤪 There’s many days I’d prefer to be at work. But we don’t get a second chance to be with them in childhood. Godspeed to you all in the same boat! Love and peace and understanding. Trust yourself.
