We booked the 21-day/20-night Kaleidoscope Odyssey Across Southeast Asia tour with TripToGo 14 months in advance, expecting a well-organized travel experience. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing from the very beginning.
We receive our flight itinerary 32 days before departure. When we reviewed it, we discovered we were scheduled to arrive in the early morning of Day 2, even though the tour officially began on Day 1. After a 21-hour international journey, we would have had only 4–5 hours before joining a full day of touring. That was not what we expected when booking a guided tour.
Customer service told us their policy is to schedule arrivals about 24 hours before the first tour activity, but our itinerary clearly did not meet that standard. We found multiple Day 1 flight options at similar prices, yet TripToGo refused to make the change unless we paid $883 per person. We ultimately changed the flights ourselves through the airline for an additional $768, simply so we could begin the tour on Day 1.
We chose the basic airfare option knowing it might mean fewer desirable seats, but we never expected it to mean arriving after the tour had already started.
The tour itself was enjoyable, and the local guides were excellent. However, the unexpected fees continued. While TripToGo notes that some domestic airlines allow only 40-pound checked bags, they never disclosed that several airlines also weighed carry-on luggage. Across three flights, we paid an additional $580 in baggage fees. Thankfully, fellow travelers helped by carrying some of our belongings, or the cost would have been even higher.
The extra fees were what really soured our experience. Between changing our international flights and unexpected baggage charges, we spent well over $1,300 beyond what we anticipated.
Another frustration was that our originally scheduled nonstop flight during the tour was changed to an early morning flight with a layover, turning a simple travel day into an all-day trip. It seemed TripToGo consistently booked the cheapest flight options rather than the most practical ones.
Our biggest concern came during our stay in Bali. A couple in our group was mugged while walking down the alley leading to our hotel. While crime can happen anywhere, we were disappointed with TripToGo's response. They relocated the affected couple, but anyone else who wanted to move hotels had to pay out of pocket. The only assistance offered was transportation back to the airport.
The Bali hotel was also far below expectations, with mold in the bathrooms, broken sliding glass doors, and a location that locals themselves warned was unsafe. Since this was the final stop of the tour, we felt TripToGo could have done much more to ensure the entire group felt safe and comfortable.
We never write reviews, but we wanted to share our experience so others know what to expect. While we came home with wonderful memories and new friendships, based on our experience, we would be hesitant to book another tour with TripToGo.. Southeast Asia was amazing, and the local guides made the destinations unforgettable. Unfortunately, poor customer service, unexpected costs, flight issues, and disappointing accommodations overshadowed much of the experience.
If you're considering TripToGo, read the fine print carefully, ask detailed questions about flight schedules and baggage policies, and be prepared for additional costs. Sometimes a lower advertised price comes with trade-offs that aren't obvious until you're already committed.
