Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 220 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many consumers frequently describe dealing with completely unhelpful customer service representatives, extremely long phone wait times, and endless call transfers that never resolve their issues. People also report immense difficulty getting necessary medical treatments, prescriptions, and routine claims approved, often resulting in unexpected out-of-pocket expenses and billing errors. However, some customers also noted that a few dedicated staff members delivered truly exceptional assistance and quickly resolved urgent problems when reached. Reviewers genuinely appreciated these rare instances where knowledgeable employees went completely above and beyond to help navigate difficult prescription and appointment scheduling situations smoothly.

Been dealing with Cigna since June for a claim. Every time I call I get a representative telling me I need to submit another form from the doctor, Firs they need a lab report was never asked for that, I submitted the lab report then i was told they needed doctor NPI number, I sent them that, then I was told I needed the provider tax id number, the provider faxed them that. August 14, 2026 representative said I faxed and they recieved everything they needed, on August 24, 2026 i received a letter saying they needed the provider's tax entity# I called was told the letter was sent in error and to ignore it number was received it from the provider. That was the last I heard from Cigna. I have them through my former employer "Honeywell"

What Service? No PBM escalation, deny right to discuss beyond call center morons

Absolutely terrible!

Due to a WELL KNOWN nationwide shortage of my medication since Nov 2025, I have lately been able to only get a 30 supply, and at times even have to wait for that. I have a 90 prescription. I get a generic letter telling me that they will only cover 2 more refills at 30 days because it is out of policy.

This shortage has been national news, is being tracked by multiple sites run by pharmacist associations, has an FDA update, AGAIN made national news this week and manufacturers acknowledge they cannot keep up with demand and don't know when they can ramp up production. My dosage is on multiple site of being limited to out of stock. Any pharmacy.

I call Cigna twice, China, India - no clue. Dutifully follow the script, despite me telling them that even today, it is national news on multiple outlets. The canned response - I will get you to one of our pharmacists. Did you call your doctor for a new prescription? My script is correct. Cigna's pharmacist cannot do anything unless they plan to manufacture it themselves. Request an escalation and three hours later STILL waiting on the promised call back.

Call again, request immediate transfer and escalation to a PBM. This needs to be addressed, Cigna needs to follow national news and shortage alerts and issue exceptions for ALL of us.

I was refused a PBM. Told that I would get a call back (HA) which has never happened. Their internal script, easily found online, states they will not transfer you, claim you will get a call back and never follow through.

Patients, per federal law, have a Right to a Qualified (Human) Reviewer - Your appeal must be reviewed by a healthcare professional. Cigna refuses, has no online way to appeal or get help and their customer care is a joke. They have NO care at all. And the fact the second Rep's dogs were barking in the background - unprofessional.

It has now been 24 hours. No call back from Cigna PBM or supervisor, despite being by "Alma" and "Wilbur" I was in the queue for a call back.

Complaint has been filed with DORA as Cigna has denied my rights to appeal to their PBM and refuse to acknowledge an ongoing shortage, instead denying my coverage.

Cigna

Cigna, this health insurance is a joke. I pay $1,400.00 a month and I am going through menopause. They have given me every possible excuse and hurdle to avoid covering my medications. They made me go back to my doctor just to get prescribed generic medications, and even so, I am still waiting for them. Hours spent on the phone with them a total waste of time. I am going to cancel this insurance. With what I pay them monthly, I can buy my own medications and pay my doctor out of pocket when I return! They are an absolute joke.😡

Incompetent Customer Service and Constant Mistakes

99% of the customer service representatives I’ve dealt with seem to have no idea what they’re talking about and are not competent in handling even basic issues. They make mistakes constantly, and when something goes wrong, it becomes incredibly difficult to get it resolved.

For example, Cigna made payment to wrong people, multiple times. When I contacted customer service to have the issue corrected, I was transferred to more than five different representatives. Not one of them seemed to understand what had happened or knew how to fix it. After all those transfers for 4 hours, the issue was still not resolved.

Dealing with Cigna customer service has been an extremely frustrating and time-consuming experience. The lack of knowledge, accountability, and basic problem-solving ability is unacceptable for a health insurance company handling important financial and healthcare matters.

This is the worst insurance company I ever had. They use ai system without fully looking into your claim and denies everything! Plus if doctor charges more than they say they negotiate for the will only put 1/4 of your doctors bill towards deductible. Scammy if you ask me.

Worst insurance

I see why this company is consistently rated at 1 start. My company recently changed to them I need an emergency med for my daughter, a med she has had for 6 years. This comapny wants me to get an approval for a med we have had on hand for EMERGENCIES for 6 years. If you have a choice, I strongly recommend using anyone else.

If I could give zero stars

If I could give zero stars, I would. I had injured my hip running with an X-ray showing there is a bone growth and potential cartilage damage. Paying for an MRI out of pocket because it was denied. Based on the findings of the x ray and that MRI, there is clear evidence of an issue with the labrum and some calcification of the bone in the joint. Doctor submits for the next MRI with contrast into the hip, and it was denied again with the denial stating, I only have hip pain and need to undergo physical therapy.... since when and insurance companies become doctors. I don't understand what I am paying for. This is an employer led plan. And I pay a lot of money every paycheck. I've literally paid more into the insurance than we've used from the insurance... to be denied for imaging is ridiculous. To be told to undertake, pt that will further damage the joint is ridiculous. I'm hoping peer review goes a little bit better...

Cigna, Healthspring, Express Scripts

I do not and will not deal with any customer service agent outside of the US mainland. I refuse to give ANY information to these people as they do not reside in the US. I have repeatedly contacted Cigna regarding my husbands premium payment for his drug coverage through Wellspring. Last week they let me give them the information for the new credit card that I had received, updated with a new expiration date, the only thing that changed on this card. They took the information, gave me a confirmation number, I was told to wait 5 days for the payment to process. Today, I got another letter, telling me the payment had not been made, it is now 7 days since new payment information was given to them and now they want next months premium also. I called, I am the only person in 8 years that these people have ever spoken to, now they will not talk to me as I am not "designated" on his account. So, who spoke to me last week and took all the information if I am not on his account? How do I go from them talking to me to refusing to the next week? I am enraged by this company at the moment, between asking me why he had not been taking a certain med, which he had been taking and them sending me automatic refills for it, figure that one out. You cannot speak to anyone except idiots who only want to find a reason to not do their job. Sadly after Cigna bought Express Scripts the same stupid exists there as well as Healthspring. Where are all the Customer Service hierarchy when you need them, you will never make contact.

The worst insurance ever

This insurance company seems to believe it knows more about my medical condition than my doctors and specialists. Despite evaluations, diagnostic testing, and professional recommendations from qualified physicians, the insurer repeatedly questions or denies medically necessary care.

It is incredibly frustrating to pay for health insurance and then have treatment decisions effectively made by someone who has never examined the patient. Instead of supporting preventive care and timely diagnosis, the process feels designed to delay or deny services until a condition becomes severe.

My doctors recommended testing based on their medical expertise and clinical findings, yet the insurance company chose to contradict those recommendations. It creates the impression that approval is only granted when a patient's condition has deteriorated to the point of being an emergency.

The amount of time spent on prior authorizations, appeals, and justification requests places an unnecessary burden on both patients and healthcare providers. Healthcare decisions should be guided by medical professionals who know the patient, not by administrative obstacles.

Based on my experience, I have very little confidence that this company puts patient care ahead of cost containment.

Welcome to 1985: Where Cigna pretends internet portals don't exist

If you enjoy burning hours of your life on hold for basic tasks that every other modern company handles in two clicks, Cigna Dental is for you.

They do not have an electronic submission portal for out-of-network dental claims. You read that right. You either drop a piece of paper in a mailbox or sit on hold for an hour so a representative can hand-hold you through emailing a PDF.

I’ve been trying to process a routine claim for my son since June 16. That required a full hour on the phone. By July 7, they claimed the documents were "unclear," costing me another hour on the line to resend them. Today is August 13—nearly two months later—and when I called to check, they told me they requested X-rays from the clinic, didn't get them, and decided the best course of action was to do absolutely nothing. No email to inform me, no follow-up call—just complete inertia.

Incompetent, archaic, and indifferent. Avoid them if you value your time.

Cigna hit rock bottom and proceeded to dig.

My FSA card company needs an EOB on a payment. I log on to Cigna and could not find the claim or EOB for the date listed. This charge happened during my current benefits period with Cigna as my company's insurance provider. How could Cigna's employees not enter a claim into my profile? This is just one of several problems I have had with their representatives not doing their jobs. Cigna ought to just hire trained monkeys from Ringling Brothers to do the job since its clear the monkeys could do a better job than the current reps Cigna has. I am in contact with my company's benefits manager and trying to get them to drop Cigna as our insurance provider and find a real insurance company to cover us.

I've been trying to get surgery done my Dr has said is needed due to a growth, blockage and sever swelling, bleeding and that could cause brain damage from my nasal passage. Cigna keeps denying it over and over with the Dr himself giving proof over and over. Disgusting! In the process again trying to get this covered as is desperately needed! Shame on you Cigna! No wonder your ratings are this bad and having a lawyer look into this as well!

Would not recommend unless you like endless follow-ups, opacity, and poor to no follow through.

Difficult to get things done with this provider - not once, I have experienced inexplicable delays in getting approvals for medication costing time and energy running after them, and now I've been chasing them for a refund for months despite a very straightforward case, numerous follow up calls and emails, and a ticket number. Very disappointing. To imagine that this is a global firm...I hope the responsiveness and transparency of the services improves. I would not recommend. At all. Too opaque and an added stress on top of whatever ailment you are treating. Imagine that! Like, why??
