Review of Xoom, A PayPal Service

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Vodafone UK does NOT accept Xoom

Lost my money.
Vodafone UK has categorically stated to me on email they do NOT accept topups via Xoom. Xoom says the topup was successful. My topup money has been lost and neither Xoom nor PayPal will do anything about it.

Customer service is nonexistent

Customer service is nonexistent.
I understand that this is a discount provider and I accept that the service is a bit slow at times but at least the rates are good. However when something goes wrong you spend forever tearing your hair out trying to get your service back again. Last week my service suddenly stopped for several days. I sent SIMBA support screenshots of the app showing zero data allowance on my account despite it having been automatically renewed the week before. They ignored this and once the service resumed again they pretended like nothing was wrong.
This is not a company that stands behind its service and their support team are absolutely useless.
If you have high blood pressure already, best to avoid SIMBA.

Review of Remitly

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Very disappointing new user experience with CNY transfer

Very disappointing new user experience with a CNY transfer.
Firstly, the first transfer is shown at a promotional rate - the subsequent transfers not only have a fixed fee but also have a terrible FX rate.
Secondly, when they advise the Alipay requirements they only state the recipient needs to have a card registered. It is only after my transfer was declined did it become clearer that the full list of requirements is far longer.

UPDATE: Following the response from Remitly, I do still think the company is not being genuine in their approach.
They write, "Exchange rates can sometimes shift between the initial preview and final confirmation because of changes in the market". However, my initial SGDCNY transactions was done at a rate of 5.56 (with no fee) while the second identical transfer entered minutes later would have been at 5.49 plus a SGD3.99 fee. What Remitly is doing is showing this "special rate" to get users onto their platform while hiding their actual rates from public view until after the customer is acquired.

Reply from Remitly

Hi Ken, Thank you for your feedback! I'm truly sorry to hear about your disappointing first experience with a CNY transfer on Remitly. That's definitely not the impression we want to make, and I understand your frustration with both the promotional rate and the Alipay requirements. Exchange rates can sometimes shift between the initial preview and final confirmation because of changes in the market—it’s something we work hard to navigate. We know how important it is to get the best value, and we’re committed to providing competitive rates every time. Thank you for your understanding as we continue striving to serve you better.

Great service for cross-border spending

Great service for those that need to receive and spend across different currencies. Costs amount to less than 0.5% from interbank rates in major currencies.

But it is really limited to being a cross-border payments/spending service. Wise needs to add more features and services to make it a proper bank-replacement. For instance, joint accounts would be a crucial start. Adding more seamless local payments (e.g. scan-and-pay or phone number type features both for sending and receiving). Being able to export transactions in OFX format. Setting up future payments, standing orders, direct debits. Allowing for more than one set of incoming bank account details per currency in order to have salary vs personal accounts. Jars could have better budget/allocation features.

I hope they continue to innovate as I can imagine it becoming my main "bank" account in the future.

Other features we have are direct debits, scheduled transfers and account details for 10 currencies to receive money directly into your Wise account.

Review of Amazon SG

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Shockingly bad

Shockingly bad. Does not resemble US or UK Amazon in any way. Selection is poor. Products are over-priced. Extremely hard to reach customer care. When you do, you get passed around from one agent to another, never making progress on the issue and dealing with people that give persistently wrong information. Listings can be inaccurate but Amazon SG has no way to fix them. But they aren't short of false empathy and empty words. Save yourself the nightmare of having to deal with their customer care and simply do your online shopping elsewhere - there are a few big platforms in Asia that are infinitely better.

Crypto Beware

Be very careful dealing with Revolut in cryptocurrency. This activity is unregulated and therefore if you have any issues they can ignore your complaint and there is nothing the Ombudsman can do since it doesn't fall within their purview. It also says a lot about Revolut's customer care if their response is to ignore customer concerns simply because they can. CM-519920

30-June Follow up: Andre from Revolut has responded to my Trustpilot review below with a response that makes it seem like I am a disappointed user and not Revolut's problem in any way. However, let me point out that (1) Andre did not have the decency to send me an email so that I have a way to respond to him directly to resolve the matter. (2) Andre fails to leave out the rest of the facts. Yes, I raised a complaint on 17 March. I received a response 11 April which contained what appeared to be a factually incorrect response. When I tried clarifying this with them on email they ignored all messages sent on 12 April, 21 April, 4 May, 19 May.

The conclusion should be very clear: Revolut will deflect criticism on Trustpilot politely but still not give you a way to communicate with them after ignoring a customer for months.

Reply from Revolut

Hello Ken,

I'm very sorry to know that your recent experience in Revolut has resulted in you feeling this way, as that is not our goal.

Together with your help in providing the necessary details here on Trustpilot, I was able to locate your account and look into your recent interaction with my colleagues in the support team. I can see that you were informed that Revolut can only show fees applied by Revolut in the app, but when it comes to network fees, which are charged by the validators and variable, we do not have the foresight to know which additional fees will be applied, as that information is not presented to us in advance as well.
I was also able to note that this information was sent to you, in more detail as a reply to your formal complaint.

I understand this can be frustrating, and bring a feeling of neglect from us, but that is not so. We value you greatly and we always do our best to help you where we can.

Best,
André from Revolut

Great price for virtual witness and notarization

They were a little slow to respond. And with few business details on their website I was a little skeptical the service was legitimate. But in the end I was able to get a virtual witnessing and notarization of a document as required at a good price. Thank you!
P.S. They are associated with klawfirm

Cheap broadband

Offers fast broadband subscription at a bargain price using Singtel infrastructure. However, the sign-up process is archaic. And they categorically do not allow any settings to be customized on their ONR (including simple port forwarding).

Updating this review a year later. After being a good customer for a year they reward me with a fee increase unless I sign a new contract. Come on Whizcomms, why do you want to alienate a good customer instead of just rolling an existing user from month to month at the same rate?

Review of Lululemon Athletica

Terrible experience

Terrible experience
First time buyer from Lululemon to buy my wife a present. Could not have gone worse. Payment failed for 3 different credit cards with no explanation and no meaningful error code with which to contact Lululemon.
Live chat would not deliver my messages so I tried to call them but closed on Black Friday Weekend?!?!?
I had to email them. They reply from the Guest Education Centre - which makes it sound like they don't need to offer support because it is not their problem but rather something that is fixed by re-educating the user.
Then they wanted me to print, redact, and send them my credit card statements with address. Never have I been asked for this level of intrusive detail. More importantly, my primary card is Wise and they don't even have such a statement with this information. Is Lululemon not aware it is 2024 and credit card fraud can be avoided by in-app approvals?
So they ignored me. I sent a few chasers. No replies in days.
Never again lululemon.

Terrible experience at every stage

Terrible experience at every stage

I arrived in London for business one Sunday having forgot my work shoes. A friend suggested I try Matches for same day delivery. I placed an order late afternoon with a 15% discount and scheduled delivery from 7pm. Shortly before 7pm Matches cancelled my order. I called support and got little help. They didn't know why the order was cancelled and offered only "there's nothing we can do" attitude.

My friend suggested their 90 minute delivery was still showing as available so I proceeded to book a replacement order by phone to get the shoes that night. Eventually shoes arrived but I discovered on the invoice the discount had not been applied.

I emailed customer support with a detailed complaint about the experience. I didn't get a reply despite their automated responses saying I could expect a reply in 1 or 2 days. I chased and chased. Finally after about 2 weeks I received a kurt reply saying they retain the right to cancel any order for security check reasons ignoring all the other issues I raised.

I email back and another 2 weeks later I still have had no reply.

Matches is supposedly a premium service but my experience shows otherwise. Extremely poor service and I would never recommend it to anyone.

unambiguously a SCAM

Appears to be a scam. After placing my order it was cancelled without a reason. Wrisan does not reply to my emails. I called their telephone number several times but it goes straight to voicemail.
(It also seems granterprise.com is a related scam)

Jan 21, 2022 update. I just had HKD 20,000 of fraudulent charges put in my credit card. I can confirm unambiguously it was this site.

Review of LPM Group Ltd.

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Good customer service but…

Good customer service and good selection of gold bullion coins but (1) premiums are a bit high compared to what one can get in the US and UK so therefore might be cheaper to buy abroad and ship to HK and (2) LPM is a bit cheeky with the gold "spot" price they show on their website as they do not state a source and it is consistently about $10/ounce higher than the futures contract or London gold price which I think they do to make their premiums look smaller than they are.

Cannot register on aeroplan.com…

I am trying to register on aeroplan.com for a new account. My mailing address is HK. The site says postcode is optional but every time I try to enter it the site deletes the value and then tells me a postcode is necessary in an error message. Terrible design. There is no easy way to communicate with them through the Contact Us link. So instead they get this bad review from me on Trustpilot.

Delivered a single slice from pizza order

Placed an order at a pizza restaurant and driver brought only a single slice of pizza! Missing most of the order! What was he thinking?!? The restaurant couldn't do any thing to resolve because they could not get through to foodpanda by phone. I tried live chat but was 20 in the queue and took 40 mins to get help. Replies on chat took many many minutes each. The app doesn't show time stamps... So convenient for them!
Terrible service. Never again.

Review of Goldmoney.com

Rated 3 out of 5 stars

Pricing lacks transparency and control

Goldmoney claims to have a "proprietary patent-pending technology" offering a "pricing engine and is based on the Best Bid or Offer (BBO)".

Where do they show the user the best bid and offer at any moment? I can only find the mid-price. So there's no knowing how wide their bid-offer spread is. Do they provide any statistics on the bid-offer spread? I can't find this kind of detail that is extremely important in knowing the real cost of transactions (in addition to the 0.5% commission).

Further, does GoldMoney allow users to load cash/fiat into their account and convert to GAU at a limit price or at a price/time of the user's choosing? If a user sends a wire transfer are they instead exposed to the prevailing price (and spread) at the moment when GoldMoney chooses to process that transaction?

I would definitely want to see more pricing transparency before using this service. Otherwise, there is no way to know the total cost of service.
