jvm ladder: take only the glibc-bedrock-2.42 sysroot, via a collection - #941
Conversation
classpath-0.93 failed on pkgs#895 (a python-only change) with
`sort: /usr/lib/libc.so.6: version GLIBC_2.43 not found`. The rungs
depend on the whole glibc-bedrock-2.42, and its sealed amd64 tarball
carries a full glibc 2.42 at /usr/lib (listed: usr/lib/libc.so.6,
ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, 4087 entries), whatever its output globs say. That
collides with production glibc 2.44 path for path (~1400 files); the
sandbox keeps whichever lands first ("Not linking ... already exists"),
which shifts with fetch timing, so an unrelated python change flipped
classpath's /usr/lib/libc.so.6 to 2.42 and every production tool in the
sandbox stopped loading.
The new glibc-bedrock-2.42-sysroot collection carries only
usr/lib/glibc-bedrock-2.42/{lib,include}, all the rungs use (SR=), and
the 28 rungs import it in place of glibc-bedrock-2.42. A collection
because `subsetOf` is only supported in runtime_deps: in build_deps it
panics minimal's executor (op/src/specs.rs:88, todo!), which is what
stopped #937.
Verified on the lab (amd64, mip): main + #895's python + this builds
jikes-1.22 and classpath-0.93 (rc=0), with no glibc path conflict in
classpath's sandbox; without it, the same tree reproduces the failure.
Rebuilds the amd64 JVM ladder once.

CI is green and the 52-minute minimal build shows a real ladder rebuild. The collection follows the existing pattern (toolchain, jdk, claude), though it's the first one whose runtime_deps holds a subsetOf. Its correctness relies on no bare glibc-bedrock-2.42 in any rung's closure, since an upsert widens the subset back to the full tarball. I checked: the remaining bare importers (go-1.x, mrustc, and the from-source arms of gcc/binutils) aren't in the JVM closure while the ladder switch is off.
As you noted on #940, this becomes unnecessary once #940 lands, and doing both costs two ~50-minute ladder rebuilds. I'd lean toward #940 and closing this one. The open question is whether we accept #940's hand-repacked, unattested artifact over keeping the attested one filtered here; I'll confirm on #940.
If this one goes ahead instead:
- Rename the
glibc-bedrockbindings in the 28 rungs (e.g.packages/ant-bootstrap-1.8.4/build.ncl:17) and inpackages/glibc-bedrock-2.42-sysroot/build.ncl:10to match the package name, per AGENTS.md. CodeRabbit flagged this too. - The JVM
libmcaveat described on #940 applies here as well.

…ew on #941) AGENTS.md: an import's identifier matches the package it imports. The 28 JVM rungs bind glibc-bedrock-2.42-sysroot as `glibc-bedrock-2-42-sysroot`, and the collection binds glibc-bedrock-2.42 as `glibc-bedrock-2-42` (dots to hyphens, as with jikes-1-22). Identifier-only: spec hashes are unchanged on both arches (mip dump: 622 amd64 / 620 arm64 packages, 0 changes), so nothing rebuilds. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

On #940 vs #941: agreed that both aren't needed. The deciding question is #940's unattested repack, which is with Bryan. My recommendation on #940 is to take this PR now, since it keeps the attested artifact and unblocks #950/#895, then land #940 once its tarball is re-sealed through minimermetic. 🤖 Generated with Claude Code |

Approving. Verified the reasoning against main: every rung's build.sh reaches glibc only through SR=/usr/lib/glibc-bedrock-2.42, gcc-15.2.0-glibc and binutils-2.46-glibc already take sysroot_lib as a subset at runtime, so the rung closure has no bare import and the subset holds.
#940 is being closed without merging, so this collection is now the long-term guard, not an interim one. Three non-blocking asks, fine as a follow-up commit here or a separate PR:
- Update the collection's header comment to say the sealed tarball still carries the top-level glibc, and that the collection goes away only when minimal supports
subsetOfin build_deps (or the artifact is re-sealed sysroot-only). - Add a CI guard that rejects a bare
glibc-bedrock-2.42import outside an allowlist (gcc-15.2.0-glibc, binutils-2.46-glibc, the go-1.x / mrustc rungs). An upsert anywhere in a rung's closure silently widens the subset back to the whole tarball, and nothing catches that today. - File the follow-ups the body mentions: the libm fixlib rewrite for the JVM rungs, and the minimal-side issues (Subset in build_deps is a todo!, path collisions only warn, prebuilt ignores output globs).
Please wait for the pending minimal build run on bc25a84 before merging; the green 52-minute run was for the earlier head.
….2.2 swap main gained #941 (JVM ladder takes only the bedrock sysroot; the classpath glibc collision that failed #950's amd64 leg) and #895 (gh-157579 patch), which conflicted here only by adding beside this PR's pip wheel. Both kept: the 0004 patch with the other patches, then the ensurepip wheel swap. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

On amd64 the whole glibc-bedrock-2.42 brings its plain /usr tree, a full glibc 2.42 that collides
with production glibc 2.44 path for path; whichever lands first wins (pkgs#895's GLIBC_2.43
failure). The rungs now import glibc-bedrock-2.42-sysroot, which carries only
usr/lib/glibc-bedrock-2.42/{lib,include}: in cc_build in place of the bare bedrock, in cc_runtime in
place of the sysroot_lib subset, and in ghc's amd64 boot list. arm64 spec hashes are unchanged
(the rungs never import the bedrock there); amd64 rebuilds 15 of the 16 GHC-ladder specs.

Unblocks #895, whose merge-queue runs keep failing in
classpath-0.93:Cause. The JVM ladder rungs depend on the whole
glibc-bedrock-2.42. On amd64 that's the sealed tarball, which carries a full plain glibc 2.42 tree,usr/lib/libc.so.6included. I listed it: 4087 entries. Its recipe's output globs say the top-level libs are excluded, but they land in the sandbox anyway. Production glibc 2.44 ships the same paths, so about 1400 files collide. The sandbox keeps whichever copy is placed first and skips the other (Not linking … already exists). The order depends on fetch timing, so a python-only change (#895) flipped classpath's/usr/lib/libc.so.6to 2.42, and every production tool in the sandbox (sort, env) stopped loading.Change. A new collection,
glibc-bedrock-2.42-sysroot, carries onlyusr/lib/glibc-bedrock-2.42/{lib,include}. That's all the rungs use (SR=/usr/lib/glibc-bedrock-2.42). The 28 rungs import it in place ofglibc-bedrock-2.42, which is a one-line change each. It's a collection becausesubsetOfonly works inruntime_deps: inbuild_depsit panics minimal's executor (op/src/specs.rs:88,todo!("input: Subset…")). That's what crashed #937's run.Verified on the lab (amd64, mip), building classpath-0.93 from four trees:
/usr/lib/libc.so.6GLIBC_2.43 not found, the prod failuresubsetOfin build_deps (#937's approach)specs.rs:88Cost. The rungs' spec hashes change, so the amd64 JVM ladder rebuilds once: icedtea-7 through openjdk-25, about 50 minutes serial. arm64 is unaffected, since the rungs are empty there. Requeue #895 after this merges.
Not fixed here: the go-1.x bootstrap chain and mrustc also depend on the whole bedrock package. They're dormant while amd64 consumes sealed tarballs (#825), but they'd hit the same collision. The minimal-side issues will be filed separately:
Subsetinbuild_depsis atodo!(), path collisions resolve first-come with only a WARN, and a whole-package dependency on a prebuilt ignores its output globs.🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Naming (review): the 28 rungs now bind the collection as
glibc-bedrock-2-42-sysroot, and the collection binds the full package asglibc-bedrock-2-42, matching AGENTS.md (0140612). The change is identifier-only, with spec hashes unchanged on both arches, so it adds no rebuild.Known limitation (pre-existing, as on #940): the sysroot's
lib/libm.so(GROUP(/usr/lib/libm.so.6 AS_NEEDED(/usr/lib/libmvec.so.1))) andlib/libm.apoint outside the sysroot. The JVM rungs only rewritelibc.so, so-lmlinks against production libm (2.44) while the$SR/librpath loads 2.42. The follow-up is a libm fixlib rewrite likeghc-7.6.3/build.sh:84-85. This PR doesn't change that behaviour.Correctness invariant (from review): the subset only holds while no bare
glibc-bedrock-2.42import is in a rung's closure, because an upsert widens the subset back to the whole tarball. Today the remaining bare importers (go-1.x, mrustc, and the from-source gcc/binutils arms) are outside the JVM closure while the ladder switch is off.
