microhs-0.16 -> ghc-4.08.2 -> ghc-5.04.3 -> ghc-6.6.1 -> ghc-6.10.4 -> ghc-7.0.4 -> ghc-7.6.3. MicroHs ships its compiled form as portable C, so gcc alone yields a Haskell compiler; GHC 4.08.2's compiler runs on it (first-party overlay: desugared modules, shims, patches, tests), compiles itself to C, and each later GHC is booted by the one before. ghc-7.6.3 is now built from source by 7.0.4 (registerised) and keeps the install layout 7.8.4 consumes; the .hc bundle Source is gone. All rungs use the bedrock gcc/binutils/glibc through a sysroot gcc wrapper; every Source is in gs://minimal-staging-archives. Rehearsed on a lab VM: the lineage and the unchanged 7.8.4..9.6.7 rungs on top of it all build and pass their gates. arm64 sides remain stubs. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

x86_64 rungs keep the bedrock sysroot wrapper; aarch64 rungs compile with the toolchain gcc. microhs..7.0.4 gain aarch64 configure/driver patches, the hand-passed triple for pre-2010 config.guess, and libffi 3.5.2 where the bundled one has no aarch64 port. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Platform tables and checkArch, libffi, gold via --with-ld.gold, unregisterised builds through 8.10.7, the boot compiler's RTS headers first, lld for the registerised 9.2.8 link, and genapply built against the target's registers. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
ghc-bootstrap leaves the closure; F438 hadrian bootstraps from hadrian-bootstrap-sources-9.6.4. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
MicroHs invokes cc; the aarch64 toolchain ships gcc only. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The happy-generated parsers and Lex collect garbage constantly in the default 50M-cell heap. 600M cells gives byte-identical .hc about 3x faster. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
dagbuild.py starts a module once its imports have compiled, largest remaining work first, instead of the overlay's retry rounds (std and lang ran one module at a time; gen1 serialized Parser and ParseIface behind a round barrier). The per-module commands are unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…bare build root In the sandbox the build root is /build, so grepping for it matched GHC's foldr/build rewrite rule in sources, interfaces and docs. 4.08.2, 5.04.3, 6.6.1 and 6.10.4 now look for their own tree and bin paths. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The overlay was packed on macOS, so every member carried a com.apple.provenance pax header and GNU tar warned once per file. v2 holds the same tree (contents, modes, links), packed deterministically with GNU tar. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…L-separated In the sandbox the build root is /build, so selecting files by a bare build-root grep matched far more than the tree's paths, including 5.04.3's "ghc/InstallShield/Setup Files/...", which xargs split at the spaces. Select by the tree, bin and boot paths with grep -F, and pass names with -Z / xargs -0. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
6.6.1 deletes compiler/stage1, so compiler/ghc-inplace -> stage1/ghc-inplace dangled and the sandbox rejected the output (link outside the output dir). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…he sandbox's rules - 6.10.4 (aarch64): libffi 3.5.2 builds in a per-subdir build/ tree, so build/*/ expanded to several dirs and the sandbox's bash cd rejected them (Debian's dash took the first). Name the host dir; fail if cd fails. - 9.6.7 (aarch64): the ghc-9.2.8 boot's settings link with ld.lld; add llvm to the arm build closure (the lab had lld from apt). - ghc (aarch64): the same for its 9.6.7 boot, configured with --disable-ld-override so the shipped settings do not need lld, and checked. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
buildbot keeps only the last ~4 KiB of stderr, and the bootstrapping.conf failure's message matched none of the grep patterns. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The bootstrapping Cabal needs hsc2hs for hpc and looks it up on PATH; the sandbox has none. Use the 6.6.1 rung's in-tree hsc2hs-inplace. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…r libffi's libtool aarch64: libffi 3.5.2 builds in build/<host>/, but rts/Makefile adds -I../libffi/build/include; copy ffi.h and ffitarget.h there too. x86_64: libffi 3.0.8's libtool sanity-checks a C++ preprocessor; bare g++ -E lacks the sysroot and the sandbox has no /lib/cpp. Use the gcc wrapper with -x c++. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
These configures probe bfd.h, libiberty and libbfd unconditionally. The sandbox closure has binutils' bfd.h, which then breaks the debug rts (bfd.h insists on config.h first), and the lib probes would add -lbfd -liberty to every link. Pin the three results to no. 7.10.3+ probe only under --enable-bfd-debug. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
build.sh's error grep misses the compiler's message for ghctags, and the sandbox returns only ~4 KiB of stderr. Wrap build.sh on x86_64 only and print the 22 lines before make's first "] Error". aarch64's spec is unchanged, so its built rungs stay cached. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…install hadrian install runs the bindist's configure without our flags, and it picked ld.lld from the build closure. Export enable_ld_override=no (the environment form of --disable-ld-override) so both configures see it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…roduction binutils Same fix as the jvm ladder (pkgs#775): with the amd64 bedrock roots sealed and production glibc 2.44 in /usr/lib, the bedrock gcc (no RUNPATH) cannot start. On x86_64 each rung starts every bedrock program through the sysroot's ld.so with --library-path (per process; the drivers find the wrapped cc1/collect2 via -B), and assembles and links with production binutils 2.47 instead of the sealed 2.46. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The bedrock sysroot's libm.so is a linker script naming /usr/lib/libm.so.6, which in the sandbox is production glibc 2.44's. -lm therefore bound 2.44 symbol versions (mhs: GLIBC_2.43 not found at run time against the 2.42 sysroot). Rewrite it into fixlib next to libc.so. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

…ings ghc-stage2 (7.0.4) failed with mkTextEncoding: invalid argument. The bedrock sysroot's libc looks for its gconv modules in /usr/lib/gconv, which in the sandbox holds production glibc 2.44's. On x86_64, 7.0.4's build-with-context.sh and a new amd64-env.sh entry point for 7.6.3 through 9.6.7 export GCONV_PATH to the sysroot's own modules. aarch64 specs are unchanged, so its built rungs stay cached. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ollection
On amd64 the whole glibc-bedrock-2.42 brings its plain /usr tree, a full glibc 2.42 that collides
with production glibc 2.44 path for path; whichever lands first wins (pkgs#895's GLIBC_2.43
failure). The rungs now import glibc-bedrock-2.42-sysroot, which carries only
usr/lib/glibc-bedrock-2.42/{lib,include}: in cc_build in place of the bare bedrock, in cc_runtime in
place of the sysroot_lib subset, and in ghc's amd64 boot list. arm64 spec hashes are unchanged
(the rungs never import the bedrock there); amd64 rebuilds 15 of the 16 GHC-ladder specs.
Replaces #939.

Impressive work. CI is green, #939 is folded in via #941's attested collection, and it merges cleanly with main. Comments rather than a verdict for now.
Suggestion: document the trust root. The body says "no GHC binary as input". Please state what the chain does start from:
-
microhs-0.16compiles upstream's generatedgenerated/mhs.c. It matches the Hackage release, but it's compiled Haskell, not hand-written C. -
ghc-4.08.2-microhs-overlay-v2.tar.gz(ghc-4.08.2/build.ncl:58-63) holds:D/, a pre-desugared copy of the 4.08.2 compiler, which is what MicroHs actually compiles;- pre-generated
D/Parser.hsandD/ParseIface.hsfrom happy 1.16; - happy seed parsers.
The build never regenerates or compares these, and they aren't in the diff. The 7.6.3 diverse-roots check (1016/1016
.hcidentical) mitigates this, but a note in the PR body orbuild.nclwould let readers see it.
Worth considering, as follow-ups if you prefer:
- Commit the overlay as
Localfiles, or put it in a reviewable repo, and have the build regenerateD/and compare it. - The final
ghcstill hasalexandhappyinbuild_deps(ghc/build.ncl:37,40), built byghc-bootstrap(the 9.8.1 bindist). Drop them or rebuild them from the ladder. ghc-7.8.4leaks a pid into its objects. Since it doesn't ship, an explicit reproducibility exception would cover it.- A cheap confidence check: compare the new final 9.10.3 with main's
ghc-bootstrap-built one.
Mechanical
ghc/build.sh:69falls back tocommand -v ghc. Please make that fail rather than silently picking up a host GHC. The comment at:74still mentions 9.8.1.microhs-0.16andghc-4.08.2through7.0.4don't setbuild_cost_multiple, though 4.08.2 is the heaviest rung (600M-cell heaps,-M8gtests).- The stale "amd64 only (see the match at the bottom)" comment is in 8 rungs (4.08.2:9, 7.8.4 to 9.2.8:7, 9.6.7:9).
- amd64 has no guard like arm64's lld check to stop the shipped
settingsor binaries referencing/usr/lib/glibc-bedrock-2.42. ghc-4.08.2/build.sh:96,192targetsx86_64-unknown-linux-gnuon arm64 too. That's fine for unregisterised 64-bit LE, but worth a comment.- About 50 lines of toolchain setup are duplicated across 14
build.shfiles. A sharedLocalfile would be a good follow-up.
I could only verify the GHC source tarball hashes against staging (downloads.haskell.org was blocked for me). MicroHs, happy and libffi match upstream. Please squash on merge; many commits are empty rebuild commits.

…oot guard; cost weights Review fixes for #774: - microhs-0.16 / ghc-4.08.2 build.ncl: state what the chain starts from (MicroHs's generated mhs.c; the 4.08.2 overlay's pre-desugared D/, the happy-generated Parser.hs/ParseIface.hs and seed parsers, never regenerated or compared), and the 7.6.3 diverse-roots mitigation. - ghc-4.08.2 build.ncl: why build.sh uses an x86_64 triple on aarch64 (unregisterised C; the triple only selects 64-bit LE layout). Kept out of build.sh, which is a hashed input. - 8 rungs: replace the stale "amd64 only" header with the real arch split. - build_cost_multiple on microhs-0.16 and ghc-4.08.2..7.0.4, scaled from run 71b01d25's measured times against the existing rungs. Attrs do not change spec hashes. - ghc/build.sh: fail instead of falling back to a ghc on PATH; drop the stale 9.8.1 bindist note; add the amd64 twin of the arm64 lld check (no shipped settings, ELF interpreter, RPATH or RUNPATH may name /usr/lib/glibc-bedrock-2.42). Only ghc/build.sh is a hashed input here: no ladder rung rebuilds (ghc and its 5 consumers do). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Thanks @norrietaylor. Addressed in 961b289 (on a merge of main, 8dc7fbd), pushed in one batch. Rebuild cost: no ladder rung rebuilds. Only Trust root. It's documented in the PR body ("What the chain starts from") and in comments in Follow-ups: all five are in #995:
I didn't do the 9.10.3 comparison now. It needs both builds materialised from two different pkgs pins, so it isn't cheap. Mechanical

Back to draft on purpose: the ladder rungs here (microhs-0.16 → ghc-4.08.2 → … → ghc-9.6.7) are moving to gominimal/bootstrap as a generation, the way the JVM ladder did in gen-5 (gominimal/bootstrap#1). Once gen-7 is published, this PR shrinks to the pin swap: 🤖 Generated with Claude Code |
…low it leaves pkgs ghc-9.6.7 is now a prebuilt Source on both arches, the ghc-9.6.7 published in gen-7 (built there on the hex0-rooted toolchain and reproduced on two independent machines per arch). microhs-0.16 and the twelve rungs ghc-4.08.2 .. ghc-9.2.8 are removed; only ghc-9.6.7 imported them. The ghc 9.10.3 recipe is unchanged apart from comments: it still boots from /usr/lib/ghc-9.6.7 and keeps its sysroot and lld checks. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Superseded by #1242, which merges this branch and repoints every bootstrap pin at gen-11 of gominimal/bootstrap. Closing to stop the duplicate world rebuilds; the branch stays. |
ghc(9.10.3) now boots on both arches fromghc-9.6.7as published in gen-7 of gominimal/bootstrap, with no GHC binary as input anywhere in the chain, and the twelve lower rungs plus MicroHs leave pkgs. What gen-7 is
The GHC ladder, built in gominimal/bootstrap on the hex0-rooted toolchain roots, source-only from MicroHs (a Haskell compiler built from C with gcc):
Every rung was built on two independent machines per arch (amd64: an AMD c4d and an Intel c3; arm64: two Axions). ghc-7.8.4 and up agreed byte for byte on amd64, ghc-8.2.2 and up on arm64; the rungs below ship whole build trees that GHCs that old fill differently per machine, so they are recorded as unreproduced in gen-7's manifest and not published. Objects live in
gs://minimal-bootstrap/gen-7/sha256/<sha>/…(public read, create-only), listed ingenerations/gen-7/manifest.jsonand verified anonymously after upload. The recipes this PR used to carry are the ones gominimal/bootstrap builds (ported by itstools/port-closure.py); the diverse-roots check (source-only path vs GHC 7.6.3's own hc-boot bundle, 1016/1016.hcfiles equal) still stands behind the root.Changed here
ghc-9.6.7: a prebuilt spec on both arches (layoutusr/lib/ghc-9.6.7, same as the rung), runtime deps gmp, ncurses and the libc it links (the glibc-bedrock-2.42 sysroot on amd64, glibc on arm64). Itssettingsname the shippedghc-cc/ghc-cxxwrappers, which run the gcc on PATH.ghc: boots from/usr/lib/ghc-9.6.7(no fallback to a GHC on PATH), builds Hadrian from the offline 9.6.4 bootstrap sources with the plan rewritten to the boot's bundled package versions, and refuses to shipsettingsor ELF files that name the bedrock sysroot (amd64) or lld (arm64).microhs-0.16,ghc-4.08.2,ghc-5.04.3,ghc-6.6.1,ghc-6.10.4,ghc-7.0.4,ghc-7.6.3,ghc-7.8.4,ghc-7.10.3,ghc-8.2.2,ghc-8.6.5,ghc-8.10.7,ghc-9.2.8. Only the next rung imported each.ghc-bootstrap(the bindist) stays for now:alexandhappystill import it.Cost
ghc's spec hash moves on both arches (new boot Source), so the Haskell closure (cabal, stack, haskell-language-server, tamarin-prover, …) rebuilds once. The ladder itself no longer builds in any world.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
