It pins two host facts that the world-rebuild study (build-servers early-cutoff, 2026-10) found embedded in otherwise identical artifacts:
uname(2) release/version → 6.1.0-minimal / #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC minimal. perl's Config, cadical, opencv, or-tools, foundationdb and emacs embedded 7.0.0-1013-gcp vs -1014-gcp. 6.1.0 is below every build host, so a version-keyed feature check can only turn a feature off.
Process entropy: one splitmix64 stream with a fixed seed behind getrandom, getentropy, raw syscall(SYS_getrandom) (LuaJIT's string hash), arc4random*, and read() of /dev/urandom and /dev/random. That covers rustc/proc-macro HashMap order, neovim's API metadata, and the JDK's seed read. Successive draws differ; the same call sequence repeats run to run.
detbuild.c's header states the real scope. Not pinned:
AT_RANDOM;
glibc-internal entropy;
static and Go binaries;
stdio and dup()ed descriptors;
/proc/version and /proc/sys/kernel/osrelease.
Not for crypto. Every byte is predictable, so it is never a sandbox default, never exported, and never on a command that uses the network. AGENTS.md has a "Preloading detbuild" section. .github/scripts/detbuild_preload_guard.py (blocking) enforces this on sources:
every preload must be a LD_PRELOAD=… <command> prefix on a real command (the words after the path are shell-tokenized, so :; make is caught);
it is never named in a .ncl;
a preloading package lists detbuild in build_deps;
a preloaded cargo always takes --frozen/--offline, and in a build that has the network it may only sit on such a step. A build has the network when the package or any package in its build closure declares needs.internet (every package that build-depends on rust), so the guard reads the closure from a mip dump of the catalog on both arches and fails closed when it cannot resolve one.
Rejecting libdetbuild strings that get captured into built outputs needs the built tree, so that is gominimal/minimal#2489. Only what runs under the preload sees the shim; produced binaries are not linked against it.
No package uses it yet. The inline shims in zola, nushell and emacs, and the ones in open PRs #878 and #880, convert in follow-ups. Each must follow the same rules: fetch without the preload, then preload only the offline step.
Verified in remote sessions on aarch64 (min package build --rebuild, then min check): all checks pass, including both standalone tests. The entropy_stream test compiles a probe that calls every intercepted entry point: getrandom (twice), syscall(SYS_getrandom), read() of /dev/urandom and /dev/random, __read_chk, arc4random_buf, arc4random, arc4random_uniform (a bound that runs its rejection loop, results range-checked), getentropy, uname and syscall(SYS_uname). It requires:
two preloaded runs match;
no draw repeats within a run;
8 threads × 1000 draws never repeat;
coreutils head -c 16 /dev/urandom repeats run to run;
a real file reads back unchanged;
two unpreloaded runs differ (the control).
Negative controls, each run through the same harness:
the first version's detbuild.c fails both tests;
this version with only the stream reverted to an index pattern fails entropy_stream and passes uname.
…opy)
One shared object recipes can LD_PRELOAD for their build step instead of
the inline shim zola, nushell, codex, verus and neovim each carry. Pins
the kernel release/version uname(2) reports and process entropy
(getrandom, getentropy, and the raw getrandom syscall LuaJIT uses), the
two host facts the world-rebuild study found in otherwise identical
artifacts. Depends on the toolchain's members, not toolchain, so it can
later ride along as a toolchain runtime dep without a cycle.

Walkthrough
The PR adds libdetbuild.so to provide deterministic entropy and pinned uname fields. It adds a package build and tests, plus a repository guard and workflow that check preload use against package and stack rules.
The library adds a fixed-seed entropy stream and interposes getrandom, getentropy, and the arc4random family. It also adds architecture-specific syscall support and libc function resolution.
The library tracks opened random-device descriptors and supplies deterministic bytes when descriptor checks identify a random device. It removes tracking when descriptors close or become invalid.
Uname and syscall overrides packages/detbuild/detbuild.c
Successful uname results receive pinned release and version fields. The syscall interposer routes getrandom and uname requests through the corresponding overrides.
Package build and behavior tests packages/detbuild/build.ncl, packages/detbuild/build.sh, packages/detbuild/detbuild.c
The package builds libdetbuild.so. Its tests check pinned uname output and entropy behavior across APIs, random-device reads, concurrent draws, and unpreloaded runs.
Preload policy and repository checks .github/scripts/detbuild_preload_guard.py, .github/scripts/test_detbuild_preload_guard.py, .github/workflows/detbuild-preload-guard.yml, AGENTS.md
The guard checks command-scoped preload syntax, package dependency closures, offline requirements, and detbuild build dependencies. Tests cover accepted and rejected cases. The workflow runs the tests and scans the repository; AGENTS.md documents preload constraints.

The title names the package (detbuild), its purpose (a preloadable deterministic build environment), and the two areas it covers (uname and entropy). The changeset adds libdetbuild.so, which pins uname results and supplies deterministic entropy, so the title matches the main change. It is 73 characters and one sentence, within a reasonable length for a title. The idea is good, but the shim needs work before anything opts into it, and especially before it becomes a toolchain dep or a sandbox default (gominimal/minimal#2227).
Every getrandom call returns the same bytes (detbuild.c:28-35). Output depends only on the buffer index, so two UUIDs or temp-name seeds in one process collide, and "retry until different" loops can livelock. Keep a deterministic stream instead, e.g. splitmix64 with a fixed seed, the way packages/emacs/fixrand.c advances an LCG.
Faked entropy reaches crypto. OpenSSL, GnuTLS, libsodium and Python secrets/ssl draw from getrandom or syscall(SYS_getrandom), both of which are intercepted.
Any preloaded process that makes a TLS connection uses constant ephemeral keys. That matters under needs.internet, and Go builds here disable the sumdb, so TLS is their only integrity check.
Generated keys (test certs, image host keys) would be predictable.
Please document "never default, never with needs.internet, never exported".
Add a checker rule rejecting libdetbuild strings in outputs, since libtool wrappers and configure caches can capture LD_PRELOAD.
"Pins process entropy" overclaims (header, detbuild.c:1-15). Not covered:
/dev/urandom and /dev/random reads (the emacs shim does handle these);
AT_RANDOM, which seeds the Go runtime;
glibc's arc4random*, which uses internal __getrandom;
static and Go binaries, which make raw syscalls.
uname also leaves /proc/sys/kernel/osrelease and /proc/version alone. Please state the real scope.
syscall() interposer (detbuild.c:44-58, and uname at 66-71):
It resolves the real syscall lazily through a non-atomic static, which is a data race.
dlsym can allocate, so an allocator that calls syscall() (jemalloc, mimalloc) can re-enter before real is set.
Resolve both pointers in an __attribute__((constructor)).
Minor: getentropy should return EIO for n > 256.
Test 3 can't fail (build.ncl:40). It reads /dev/urandom, which isn't intercepted, computes b but never uses it, and only checks that a is non-empty. Please test getrandom and raw syscall(SYS_getrandom) directly, e.g. a preloaded os.getrandom(16) run twice, compared against each other and the expected pattern.
No opt-in story yet.
No package uses it; zola, nushell and emacs keep their inline shims.
The commit message says codex, verus and neovim carry shims, but those shims live in open PRs (#878, #880), not on main.
Please add AGENTS.md guidance to preload only the build command (LD_PRELOAD=… cargo build, as nushell does).
Also note that a fake 7.0.0 kernel can enable kernel-version feature checks the host doesn't support.
Review fixes for #884:
- getrandom/getentropy/syscall(SYS_getrandom) draw from one splitmix64
stream with a fixed seed (atomic, so threads never share a draw).
Successive calls differ; the same call sequence repeats run to run.
The first version returned the same index-only pattern on every call,
so two UUIDs or temp-name seeds in one process collided.
- Also covers arc4random*, and read() of a descriptor opened on
/dev/urandom or /dev/random (fstat-checked before any read is replaced,
so a stale entry can only miss, never corrupt a real file).
- syscall() and uname() pass through with the raw syscall instruction,
so there is no lazily resolved static to race on and no dlsym that can
re-enter from an allocator. The libc functions it forwards to (read,
close, open*) are resolved once in a constructor, with a raw-syscall
fallback for calls that arrive earlier.
- getentropy returns EIO above 256 bytes.
- The fake kernel is 6.1.0, below every build host, so a version-keyed
feature check can only turn a feature off.
- The header states the real scope: what is pinned, and what is not
(AT_RANDOM, glibc-internal entropy, static/Go binaries, stdio and
dup()ed descriptors, /proc). It also says why it must never touch
crypto.
- Test: a C probe calls every intercepted entry point. Two preloaded runs
must match, no draw may repeat inside a run, and two unpreloaded runs
must differ (the control). The old /dev/urandom test, which could not
fail, is gone.
- AGENTS.md "Preloading detbuild": one command only, never exported,
never on a networked command (fetch first, preload `--frozen`), never a
sandbox default, and a note on the fake kernel version.
- .github/scripts/detbuild_preload_guard.py (+ workflow) enforces the
first two on sources. Rejecting libdetbuild strings captured into
built outputs needs the built tree: gominimal/minimal#2489.

Thanks @norrietaylor, this was a thorough review. All six points are in e4c3558, on top of a merge of main:
Stream. getrandom, getentropy, syscall(SYS_getrandom), arc4random* and /dev/urandom reads now draw from one splitmix64 stream with a fixed seed. Each 8-byte draw is an atomic add, so racing threads never share one. The new test checks that no draw repeats within a run, including 8 threads × 1000 draws.
Negative control: this version with only fill() reverted to an index pattern fails entropy_stream, and uname still passes.
The header also says the stream is per process, so two processes, and both sides of a fork, see the same bytes. Tools that name files in a shared directory have to retry on collision.
Crypto.
The header and build.ncl now say "never a sandbox default, never exported, never on a command that uses the network". AGENTS.md has a new "Preloading detbuild" section.
.github/scripts/detbuild_preload_guard.py is a new blocking workflow. It requires every preload to be a LD_PRELOAD=… <command> prefix: never export/declare -x, never a bare assignment, never in a .ncl. In a needs.internet package it allows only cargo … --frozen/--offline.
Guard fixtures: 5 violating cases, each rejected, and 2 passing ones. On main it reports 0 preload(s) checked.
Scope./dev/urandom and /dev/random reads are now covered:
descriptors opened via open/open64/openat/openat64 and the fortified __open*_2 are tracked;
read and __read_chk substitute only after fstat confirms char device 1:8 or 1:9, so a stale entry can miss but can never corrupt a real file;
arc4random* is interposed directly.
The header lists what's still out of scope: AT_RANDOM/getauxval, glibc-internal entropy, static/Go raw syscalls, stdio and dup()ed or inherited descriptors, and /proc/version / osrelease / random/uuid. I left getauxval out on purpose: other libraries' constructors and ifunc resolvers call it before ours runs.
syscall() interposer.
syscall() and uname() now pass through with the raw instruction (x86_64 syscall, aarch64 svc 0). There's no lazily resolved static and no dlsym on that path, so a jemalloc/mimalloc re-entry has nothing to trip on.
The forwarded libc functions are resolved once in a constructor, with a raw-syscall fallback for calls that arrive before it.
getentropy returns EIO above 256 bytes, which the test checks.
Test 3 is gone. entropy_stream compiles a probe that calls getrandom twice, the raw syscall, a /dev/urandom read, arc4random_buf and getentropy. It requires:
two preloaded runs identical;
six distinct draws;
coreutils head on /dev/urandom repeating run to run;
a real file reading back unchanged;
two unpreloaded runs differing, the control showing the comparison can fail.
The first version's detbuild.c fails it, and also fails uname.
Opt-in.
AGENTS.md now says to preload only the build command, the nushell shape.
The fake kernel is now 6.1.0, below every host the fleet runs, so a version-keyed check can only switch a feature off. AGENTS.md says to probe for the feature, not the version.
Converting zola, nushell, emacs and those PRs comes after this lands.
Verification: remote sessions on aarch64 ran min package build --rebuild detbuild, then min check, and every check passed, including both standalone tests. The two negative controls ran through the same harness from a throwaway worktree, which was never pushed.

The six points from the earlier change request look addressed in detbuild.c, the tests and AGENTS.md. Two gaps in the new blocking guard:
.github/scripts/detbuild_preload_guard.py has no committed tests. The reply mentions 5 violating and 2 passing fixtures, but they aren't in this PR, and on main the guard reports 0 preload(s) checked. CI therefore never shows that it rejects anything. Commit them as a test_detbuild_preload_guard.py (like test_llvm_collision_guard.py or test_source_hash_guard.py) covering export, declare -x, a bare assignment, a .ncl mention and a networked non-cargo command, and run it in detbuild-preload-guard.yml. Also add the guard's test file to the workflow's paths.
Lines 54-60: only .sh and .ncl files under packages/ are scanned. An export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/minimal/libdetbuild.so in a .bash, .py or extensionless helper script, or a .ncl under stacks/ naming it in env, passes. Rule 2's docstring says "No .ncl file outside packages/detbuild", and that should cover stacks/ too. Scan every text file under packages/ (skipping binaries and packages/detbuild), and add stacks/** to the scan and to the workflow paths.
…ges/ and stacks/
From mitodrummer's review:
- test_detbuild_preload_guard.py (11 tests, run in the workflow, and the file
is in its paths): export, declare -x, a bare assignment, a .ncl mention and
a networked non-cargo command are rejected; a single-command prefix and a
networked offline cargo step pass and are counted; comments and binaries
are ignored; main() exits 1 on a violation. So CI shows the guard rejecting,
not only `0 preload(s) checked`.
- The scan reads every text file under packages/ (no NUL in the first 8 KiB;
packages/detbuild still skipped), so .bash, .py and extensionless helpers
are covered, and every text file under stacks/ (`stacks/**` added to the
workflow paths): a stack naming libdetbuild is rejected.
Real tree: 0 preloads, 0 violations (nothing opts in yet).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
@mitodrummer both gaps are addressed in the latest commit:
Committed tests:.github/scripts/test_detbuild_preload_guard.py has 11 tests. The workflow runs them before the guard, and the file is listed in its paths. They check that the guard rejects export, declare -x, a bare assignment, a .ncl mention, and a networked non-cargo command. They also check that a single-command prefix and a networked cargo … --frozen step pass and are counted, that comments and binary files are ignored, and that main() exits 1 on a violation.
Wider scan: the guard now reads every text file under packages/ (any file without a NUL in its first 8 KiB, still skipping packages/detbuild), so .bash, .py and extensionless helpers are covered. It also reads every text file under stacks/, and a stack that names libdetbuild is rejected. stacks/** is added to the workflow paths.
On the real tree it finds 0 preloads and 0 violations, since nothing opts in yet.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Approved at fd5de01. Both gaps from my last review are closed. The guard's tests are committed, with 11 cases, and the workflow runs them before the guard. It now scans every text file under packages/ (NUL-sniffed, so .bash, .py and extensionless helpers count) and every text file under stacks/. norrietaylor's changes-requested review still needs their re-review or a dismissal.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
My six points from the earlier review are addressed in detbuild.c, the tests and AGENTS.md. I compiled the shim at this head on aarch64 (gcc 15, glibc 2.42) with -Wall -Wextra; it built with no warnings. Two preloaded runs gave identical output for uname -r, head -c 16 /dev/urandom, Python's os.urandom/uuid4/random, and a _FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 open+read of /dev/urandom.
One real hole remains, in the blocking guard: a bare assignment with a trailing comment counts as a scoped prefix, so export LD_PRELOAD on the next line passes. Details inline, with one false positive and one docstring nit.
…es (review)
- `LD_PRELOAD=<lib> # note` matched with the comment as the "command", and a
later `export LD_PRELOAD` (no path on that line) went unchecked, so `make`
and everything after it ran preloaded while the guard reported 0
violations. What follows the path must now be a command (not a comment or
a shell operator), and a file that names libdetbuild may not export
LD_PRELOAD on any line.
- Backslash-continued lines are joined before matching, so the continued
offline-cargo form no longer reads as a lone backslash and false-fails.
- Rule 3's docstring: --frozen is necessary, not a proof the step is
offline; a build.rs can still download.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…nly there
6b09baf closed the trailing-comment repro, but four shapes of the same
bypass still passed with "1 preload(s) checked, 0 violation(s)" while a later
child saw LD_PRELOAD:
- `LD_PRELOAD=<lib> FOO=1` (another assignment is not a command), then
`true; export LD_PRELOAD` (EXPORTED was anchored to line start);
- `true && export LD_PRELOAD` after any prefix;
- `LD_PRELOAD=<lib> :` / `. f` / `eval` / `exec >log` under sh or
bash --posix, where an assignment before a special builtin persists and
is exported;
- `LD_PRELOAD=<lib> >log` (a redirection alone).
Now: leading assignments are skipped before the command word, a special
builtin or redirection is not a command, and in a file that preloads
libdetbuild LD_PRELOAD may appear only in the one checked prefix (or
`unset LD_PRELOAD`). Assignments before an offline cargo no longer trip
the needs.internet rule (old false positive).
9 new tests; all rejection tests fail on 6b09baf's guard.

Medium: an export that isn't at the start of its line still passes if the line names the library.
EXPORTED is anchored with ^\s*, but PREFIX matches anywhere on the line, and lines containing libdetbuild skip the "LD_PRELOAD anywhere else" rule (line ~141). So a line that exports the path, followed by any trailing word, is counted as a scoped prefix. These all pass the guard with no errors:
cd build &&export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/minimal/libdetbuild.so make
iftrue;thenexport LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/minimal/libdetbuild.so PATH;ficommandexport LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/minimal/libdetbuild.so make
builtinexport LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/minimal/libdetbuild.so make
declare -g -x LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/minimal/libdetbuild.so make # -x not in the first flag groupf() { local -x LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/minimal/libdetbuild.so cargo; ...; }
In bash and dash, each leaves LD_PRELOAD set for later commands. That's the bypass class 12085ea meant to close ("wherever it sits on its line"), and the guard is what enforces the crypto-safety rule.
Suggested fix:
Unanchor EXPORTED and add local, readonly, command and builtin; match any -x flag group, not just the first.
In PREFIX, only accept LD_PRELOAD= where a command starts: line start, or after ;, &&, ||, |, (, then/do.
Add the cases above to test_detbuild_preload_guard.py.
…iew)
Norrie's re-review of e064ffc: EXPORTED was anchored at the line start
while PREFIX matched LD_PRELOAD= after any whitespace, and lines naming
libdetbuild skip the file-level LD_PRELOAD rule. So
`cd build && export LD_PRELOAD=<lib> make`, `command export ...`,
`builtin export ...`, `declare -g -x ...` and `local -x ...` all counted
as one scoped prefix while leaving LD_PRELOAD set for later commands.
- PREFIX now accepts LD_PRELOAD= only at a command start: line start, or
after ; & | ( { ! or a backtick, optionally followed by reserved words
(if/then/else/elif/do/while/until/time). Anywhere else the path is an
argument to another word. This also rejects `make LD_PRELOAD=<lib> cc`,
which the old boundary accepted and make exports into every recipe.
- EXPORTED is unanchored and covers export/local/readonly/declare/typeset
with any flags, for the clearer "exported" message.
- Tests: Norrie's six shapes plus readonly are rejected with no preload
counted; the make-argument case is rejected; a prefix after &&, ||,
then, do and inside ( ) still passes (negative control). The old
regexes pass the bypass shapes, checked separately.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
@norrietaylor Thanks, confirmed: with the old regexes all six of your lines pass with no violations. Fixed in f03325e, taking the approach from the other side.
PREFIX now accepts LD_PRELOAD= only at a command start: line start, or after ;&|({! or a backtick, optionally followed by reserved words (if/then/else/elif/do/while/until/time). Anywhere else, the path is an argument to another word, so the guard rejects it. That closes the class rather than listing the builtins. It also catches one more case: make LD_PRELOAD=<lib> cc passed before (the old boundary accepted any whitespace), and make exports command-line variables into every recipe.
EXPORTED is unanchored and covers export/local/readonly/declare/typeset with any flags, so those lines get the clearer "exported" error.
Tests (30, all pass):
Your six lines plus readonly ... are each rejected, with 0 preloads counted.
The make-argument case is rejected.
As a negative control, a prefix after &&, ||, then, do and inside ( ) still passes as one checked preload.
test_a_second_mention_on_the_prefix_line_is_rejected now expects the "exported" message; it's still rejected.
glibc is listed in both build_deps (Line 30) and runtime_deps (Line 34). The build system injects every runtime_deps entry into the build environment. The build_deps entry is therefore redundant. Remove it.

CodeRabbit on f03325e, both confirmed passing with 0 violations:
- `unset LD_PRELOAD; LD_PRELOAD=$P; export LD_PRELOAD` was skipped as an
unset and re-exported the preload. UNSET now matches `unset LD_PRELOAD`
alone on its line (a trailing comment is fine).
- In a needs.internet package, a `--frozen` after `#` (dropped by the
shell) or after `;` (another command's flag) satisfied CARGO_OFFLINE.
The check now reads only the words before the first `#` or operator.
Tests: 4 new (3 bypasses + a negative control); the old guard fails the
3 bypass tests, the new one passes all 31.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
@coderabbitai Both confirmed: each sequence passed the guard on f03325e with 0 violations. Fixed in 1e346f8:
UNSET now exempts only unset LD_PRELOAD standing alone on its line (a trailing comment is allowed). Your sequence is rejected with "exported in a file that preloads libdetbuild".
CARGO_OFFLINE now reads only cargo's own words, the text before the first # or shell operator. So cargo build # --frozen and cargo build; true --frozen are both rejected in a needs.internet package.
There are 4 new tests: the 3 bypasses, plus a negative control showing a standalone unset and a --frozen cargo with a trailing comment still pass. The old guard fails the 3 bypass tests; the new one passes all 31.
@bryan-minimal I inspected the guard and the four regression tests. The changes address both reported bypasses:
UNSET matches only a standalone unset LD_PRELOAD, with optional -v and a trailing comment.
The offline check excludes comments and subsequent commands before looking for Cargo’s --frozen or --offline flag.
The tests cover all three rejected sequences and the valid cases. I did not run the tests; the 31-test pass result is your reported verification.

Preserve regression tests that reject combined unset/re-export sequences and misplaced offline flags while accepting standalone unset and offline Cargo commands with trailing comments.

Scope matches the title. The diff adds the detbuild package, its guard and workflow, and one AGENTS.md section. Clobber none seen: six files are new and the AGENTS.md hunk only adds lines. git log did not run, because the sandbox denied Bash. Correctnessdetbuild.c holds up on a read of the stream, the raw syscalls on both arches, the sysret range, the fd tracking and the open family forwarding. The guard has two gaps. Its needs.internet rule reads only the package's own build.ncl, but network access comes from any dependency, so nushell counts as offline. A shell operator attached to the command word also passes the special-builtin check. The open CodeRabbit thread at line 96 stands, and cargo run -- --frozen is the same class. I do not repeat it as a finding. Not checked I traced the guard regexes by hand, so neither the guard nor its unit tests ran. gitleaks did not run, and a read of the diff shows no credentials. No dependency file moved. The PR body reports verification on aarch64 only, so the x86_64 raw6 path has no reported run. I read that path and found no defect.

high · Rule 3 tests only the package's own build.ncl for internet = {, but the builder grants network when any dependency declares it. packages/rust/build.ncl:45-47 says so, and it says Rust programs fetch crates in their own builds. So nushell has network and no needs block, and the guard treats it as offline. The PR converts nushell's shim in a follow-up. LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/minimal/libdetbuild.so cargo build --locked --release then passes, and cargo fetches crates over TLS with predictable keys. This is a pattern: 72 packages import rust, and I confirmed the missing needs for nushell only. Compute networked from the dependency closure, or require --frozen/--offline on every preloaded cargo command. AGENTS.md:809 has the same needs.internet wording. AGENTS.md:808 cites nushell as the model, and nushell runs a preloaded fetch today.

Fixed in 5a8e17b. I read how the builder decides this. minimal op/src/specs.rsrootfs_mapped sets need_internet if the spec or ANY entry in Transitives::new(graph, spec, include_build_deps = true) declares internet. That set is the direct build_deps and runtime_deps plus the runtime_deps of each, transitively. A dependency's own build_deps are not in it. The guard now reproduces that from mip dump -p --format json for amd64 and arm64. The workflow gets the dumps through the pinned setup-mip action, the same way node-runtime-guard does. A build counts as networked if any arch has the network. A package whose closure the dump does not resolve also counts as networked.
I also took your other option: a preloaded cargo must carry --frozen/--offline whether or not the build has the network. On the real catalog, 119 packages declare needs.internet and 230 have the network through their closure; nushell is one of them. I copied nushell's build.sh with its shim swapped for libdetbuild and ran the guard on it. cargo build --locked is rejected twice: cargo is not offline, and detbuild is not in build_deps. make is rejected as networked through the closure. The new tests cover a build dep, a runtime dep of a dep, the package's own runtime dep, one arch only, and an unresolved closure. The negative control is that a dep's build_dep does NOT network the build. All of these fail against 1e346f8. AGENTS.md no longer cites nushell, and it states the closure rule.

high · The command-word check splits on whitespace, so an operator attached to the word escapes it. LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/minimal/libdetbuild.so :; make gives word == ':;', which is not in SPECIAL_BUILTINS, and NOT_A_COMMAND does not match. The guard counts one preload and no violation. The docstring says that under sh or bash --posix the assignment before : persists and is exported, so make and all later commands run preloaded. set -e; and eval; pass the same way. ASSIGNMENTS has the same gap, because its value class accepts ;: LD_PRELOAD=<lib> FOO=1; make gives the command make, although that line is a bare assignment. A networked package still fails on the cargo rule, but the finding above shows that this rule misses packages. Cut cmd at the first shell operator before the word check, and stop ASSIGNMENTS at operators. Add both shapes to the tests. I traced this by hand and did not run it.

Fixed in 5a8e17b. The text after the preload path is now tokenized with shlex.shlex(posix=True, punctuation_chars=True), so :; becomes :;. Leading NAME=value tokens and redirections (with their targets, and fd numbers like 2>) are skipped. The first other token is the command word, and the command ends at the first control operator (;&&&|||() ...). No command word, a special builtin, a reserved word, a command word made by expansion ($X), or unbalanced quotes means the line is rejected. The cargo-offline check runs on that same token list, so build;true --frozen does not count. ASSIGNMENTS is gone, which closes the FOO=1; make gap.
Tests: :; make, set -e; make, eval; make, :&& make, :|| make, :& make, :|cat, FOO=1; make, FOO=1&& make, CFLAGS="-O2 -g"; make, 2>log; make and >log; make are all rejected. All but set -e; make, 2>log; make and >log; make passed 1e346f8 with one preload counted. A negative control (make; echo, make&& echo, make>build.log, 2>&1 make|tee, FOO=1 make -j$(nproc)) still passes as one preload each.
Every byte it hands out is predictable, including the keys behind a TLS handshake made under it. So:
- **Preload one command:** `LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/minimal/libdetbuild.so cargo build --frozen --release`, the way `packages/nushell/build.sh` scopes its shim. Never `export LD_PRELOAD`, and never set it through a `.ncl` `env` or `vars`.

low · The section gives the preload command but does not say to add detbuild to build_deps. A build sandbox mounts only the dependency closure (AGENTS.md:413). Without the dependency, ld.so prints that the object cannot be preloaded, ignores it, and the command runs without the shim. The build succeeds and is not pinned. The guard does not check this either, and it counts the line as a good preload. Add the build_deps step here, and make the guard require a detbuild import in a package that preloads it. This applies to every follow-up conversion that the PR names.

Done in 5a8e17b. AGENTS.md now has an "Add detbuild to build_deps" bullet first, with the reason: the sandbox mounts only the closure, and ld.so ignores a missing preload object. The guard now requires it too. A package with a preload must list detbuild in build_deps (as a package or a subset) on every arch it exists on, read from the same catalog dump. Tests cover a missing entry and an entry missing on one arch only.

low · The comment says the probe calls every intercepted entropy entry point, and the PR body says the same. The probe does not call arc4random(), arc4random_uniform() or __read_chk, and it does not read /dev/random. It also does not call syscall(SYS_uname), which the shim intercepts. A defect in the rejection loop of arc4random_uniform or in the /dev/random path passes this test. Add these calls to t.c, or narrow the comment to what the probe calls.

Done in 5a8e17b. I made the probe call them instead of narrowing the claim. It now also calls arc4random() twice and arc4random_uniform(0x80000001) four times. That bound sends about half of all draws into the rejected bucket, so the loop runs, and each result is checked against the bound. It also calls __read_chk (declared and called directly, so the result does not depend on fortify settings), a read() of /dev/random and syscall(SYS_uname), and asserts syscall_release 6.1.0-minimal. That is ten draws per run, which must match across preloaded runs and not repeat inside one. I built it in a session on aarch64 and min check --packages detbuild gives standalone tests: Pass. Negative control: expecting a wrong syscall_release made entropy_stream Fail. The comment and the PR body now list exactly what the probe calls.

nit · This comment narrates review history and does not explain the test. It cites a person, a date and a commit that a squash merge can remove. The pattern repeats in this file at lines 68, 101-102, 125-126 and 196-197. It also repeats at detbuild_preload_guard.py:65 and :88, and at packages/detbuild/build.ncl:53-54. Keep the shell behaviour that each comment states, and remove the review references.

Done in 5a8e17b. I removed the person, date, commit and review references from test_detbuild_preload_guard.py, from detbuild_preload_guard.py (:65, :88) and from build.ncl's probe comment. Each comment now states only the shell behaviour it tests.
The builder gives a build the network when the package or any package in
its sandbox closure declares needs.internet (minimal op/src/specs.rs
rootfs_mapped over Transitives::new(.., include_build_deps = true)), so
every package that build-depends on rust is networked with no needs block
of its own. The guard read only the package's own build.ncl. It now reads
the closure from `mip dump -p` of the catalog (amd64 and arm64, through the
pinned setup-mip action): build_deps and runtime_deps, then their runtime
deps transitively. A preloading package whose closure the dump cannot
resolve counts as networked. Any preloaded cargo must also carry --frozen
or --offline, networked or not.
The command after the preload path is split with shlex
(punctuation_chars), so an operator glued to a word still ends the
command: `:; make`, `set -e;`, `eval;` and `FOO=1; make` are a special
builtin or a bare assignment, and are rejected. Assignments and
redirections are skipped as tokens; unbalanced quotes and a command word
made by expansion are rejected.
A package that preloads libdetbuild must list detbuild in build_deps on
every arch it exists on: the sandbox mounts only the closure, and without
the library ld.so ignores the preload. AGENTS.md gains that step, states
the closure rule, and no longer cites nushell (its own shim still runs a
preloaded `cargo build --locked`).
The entropy_stream probe now also calls arc4random, arc4random_uniform
(with a bound that exercises its rejection loop, each result range
checked), __read_chk, a read of /dev/random and syscall(SYS_uname).
Review-history references are gone from the guard, its tests and
build.ncl comments.

New package
detbuild: one shared object,/usr/lib/minimal/libdetbuild.so. A recipe preloads it on one build command:It pins two host facts that the world-rebuild study (build-servers early-cutoff, 2026-10) found embedded in otherwise identical artifacts:
uname(2)release/version →6.1.0-minimal/#1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC minimal. perl's Config, cadical, opencv, or-tools, foundationdb and emacs embedded7.0.0-1013-gcpvs-1014-gcp. 6.1.0 is below every build host, so a version-keyed feature check can only turn a feature off.getrandom,getentropy, rawsyscall(SYS_getrandom)(LuaJIT's string hash),arc4random*, andread()of/dev/urandomand/dev/random. That covers rustc/proc-macro HashMap order, neovim's API metadata, and the JDK's seed read. Successive draws differ; the same call sequence repeats run to run.detbuild.c's header states the real scope. Not pinned:dup()ed descriptors;/proc/versionand/proc/sys/kernel/osrelease.Not for crypto. Every byte is predictable, so it is never a sandbox default, never exported, and never on a command that uses the network. AGENTS.md has a "Preloading detbuild" section.
.github/scripts/detbuild_preload_guard.py(blocking) enforces this on sources:LD_PRELOAD=… <command>prefix on a real command (the words after the path are shell-tokenized, so:; makeis caught);.ncl;detbuildinbuild_deps;cargoalways takes--frozen/--offline, and in a build that has the network it may only sit on such a step. A build has the network when the package or any package in its build closure declaresneeds.internet(every package that build-depends onrust), so the guard reads the closure from amip dumpof the catalog on both arches and fails closed when it cannot resolve one.Rejecting
libdetbuildstrings that get captured into built outputs needs the built tree, so that is gominimal/minimal#2489. Only what runs under the preload sees the shim; produced binaries are not linked against it.No package uses it yet. The inline shims in zola, nushell and emacs, and the ones in open PRs #878 and #880, convert in follow-ups. Each must follow the same rules: fetch without the preload, then preload only the offline step.
