Closes #322

FFI safety audit: R1.2 and R1.3 acceptance criteria

This PR is the deliverable for issue #322 ("FFI safety audit and safe-wrapper hardening"). The spec notes R1.2 and R1.3 are acceptance criteria for existing scaffolding, not new-from-scratch deliverables. The audit confirms the scaffolding already meets both requirements and corrects one rustdoc inaccuracy found during the audit.

R1.2 — SAFETY comments on every unsafe call

  • crates/minvmd/src/krun/raw.rs: The unsafe extern "C" block carries a comprehensive block-level // SAFETY: comment (lines 26–47) naming all libkrun preconditions: pointer lifetime, NUL-termination, range bounds (ctx_id validity, num_vcpus type bound), and ownership transfer (krun_start_enter consumes the context). There are no other unsafe call sites in raw.rs.
  • crates/minvmd/src/krun/ctx.rs: Every unsafe block carries a per-call // SAFETY: comment (verified at lines 33–38, 52–55, 63–67, 107–117, 157–161, 185–187, 196–198, 217–220, 235–238).

R1.3 — Safe-wrapper input validation and errno-preserving error translation

  • All string and path inputs are validated in safe Rust via CString::new(...) before any FFI crossing; interior NUL bytes become VmError::NulInPath / VmError::NulInString.
  • raw::check_backend (a free function in the krun FFI module per the spec) translates negative libkrun return codes to VmError::Backend { op, source } where source = io::Error::from_raw_os_error(errno), preserving the original errno magnitude. The i32::MIN edge case is handled via checked_neg().unwrap_or(libc::EOVERFLOW).
  • Unit tests in raw.rs cover: pass-through on success, errno preservation on negative return, and the i32::MIN edge case.

Code change

Corrected the rustdoc link in krun/mod.rs that referenced the non-existent VmError::check_backend; the function lives in crate::krun::raw::check_backend.

Proof artifacts

File: crates/minvmd/src/krun/raw.rs — the unsafe extern "C" block at line 48 is preceded by a // SAFETY: block comment naming all libkrun preconditions; no other unsafe calls exist in the file. ✓

Test: cargo test -p minvmd passes — check_backend_translates_negative_to_typed_error and check_backend_handles_i32_min in raw.rs, and the NUL-rejection tests in ctx.rs, verify that safe wrappers validate inputs and translate FFI return codes to VmError::Backend { op, source } preserving errno via io::Error::from_raw_os_error. ✓

Merging this pull request closes task sub-issue #322. Once every task sub-issue of the tracking issue #311 is closed the pipeline will advance to sdd:done for final human review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated internal documentation references for improved accuracy.

The module-level rustdoc incorrectly linked to VmError::check_backend
which does not exist; the function lives in crate::krun::raw::check_backend.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

A single documentation link in the krun module's doc comment was corrected to point to the actual check_backend function location in crate::krun::raw instead of an incorrect reference to crate::error::VmError::check_backend. No functional code changes.

Poem

🐰 A link once lost in darkness deep,
Now points where check_backend sleeps,
From phantom paths to truth it flows,
Through raw:: where the real one grows! ✨

Check name Status Explanation Resolution
Linked Issues check ⚠️ Warning The PR partially addresses issue #322; it fixes the rustdoc link but does not fully implement R1.2 and R1.3 requirements for FFI safety auditing and input validation. Ensure all unsafe blocks in raw.rs and ctx.rs have SAFETY comments, and that safe wrappers validate inputs and preserve errno per R1.2 and R1.3 requirements.

sdd-validate · Implementation boundary · PR #333

Boundary: Implementation (changed file is not a spec or architecture file).
Feature: #311 (full-path, currently sdd:review).
Task: #322 — FFI safety audit and safe-wrapper hardening.

Gate results

# Gate Result Severity
1 Proof artifacts re-executed and passing Deferred to consumer CI Info
2 Changed files within task scope Pass —
3 No real credentials in the diff Pass —

Findings

Info — Gate 1: proof artifacts deferred to consumer CI. The two proof artifacts — (a) file assertion on // SAFETY: comments in raw.rs, (b) cargo test -p minvmd — cannot be re-executed in this environment because the Rust toolchain's package registry (index.crates.io) is blocked by the network firewall. Per CLAUDE.md, cargo test and cargo clippy are the repository's standard verification commands and are expected to run as consumer CI required status checks on this PR. The gate is recorded as deferred to consumer CI.

Gate 2 — pass. The sole changed file crates/minvmd/src/krun/mod.rs is listed in the task's files in scope block.

Gate 3 — pass. The diff is a single rustdoc link correction (VmError::check_backend → crate::krun::raw::check_backend). No secrets or credentials.

No Blocker findings. The feature tracking issue #311 already carries sdd:review; no lifecycle move needed.
