feat(minvmd): look for the guest images under the system data directories too - #2975
After the user's own data directory, minvmd looks for the kernel, root
filesystem and initramfs under each system data directory: $XDG_DATA_DIRS,
else /usr/local/share:/usr/share, as the XDG base directory specification
says, relative entries ignored. A machine-wide install (the macOS package,
a Linux package) puts the images there; a user's own copy still wins.
All the images of one boot come from one directory: the first that holds,
as regular files, every image whose override is unset. A user directory
missing a file (an interrupted or older install) is passed over whole, never
mixed with the machine's copy. A daemon with no data directory of its own
(no HOME: a service account, a scrubbed environment) uses the machine's
copy. The MissingImage error names every directory looked in with the files
it lacked, and says what to do.
Context
First of three stacked PRs for the macOS system install (gominimal/inbox#1179): the package puts the guest images under /usr/local/share/minimal, and minvmd must find them there. Self-contained; merge first. The next two are the shared box-name service and the package itself.
Proof
Unit tests in crates/minvmd/src/image.rs: the system-dir fallback, the user's copy winning, a partial user copy passed over whole, an overridden image left out of the rule, a directory named like an image skipped, the error's directory list and next step, the XDG default with an empty and a relative entry, and the no-data-directory path. Every resolver test isolates both XDG_DATA_HOME and XDG_DATA_DIRS, so a host with the package installed cannot change the result. Lab prepush on anvil: green except mr-ci (job 01964 at d56109b).
Image discovery checks user data locations before system locations and selects a directory containing all required images. Partial or invalid directories are skipped; standard system locations are checked when none are configured.
Non-empty image overrides are used as provided.
If images can’t be found, the error message lists the searched directories and missing files, or indicates when no directories were available, and suggests next steps.
…ries too
After the user's own data directory, minvmd looks for the kernel, root
filesystem and initramfs under each system data directory: $XDG_DATA_DIRS,
else /usr/local/share:/usr/share, as the XDG base directory specification

a Linux package) puts the images there; a user's own copy still wins. A

every directory looked in.

Image resolution returns non-empty overrides directly. For unset overrides, it searches the user data directory and then system data directories for one directory containing all required regular image files. Missing-image errors report unset overrides and missing files in searched directories.

Search paths and missing-image details crates/minvmd/src/error.rs, crates/minvmd/src/image.rs
System paths use absolute XDG_DATA_DIRS entries or default to /usr/local/share and /usr/share, with minimal/ appended. MissingImage records unset overrides and files missing from each searched directory.
Shared lookup and resolver tests crates/minvmd/src/image.rs
When an override is unset, resolution searches the user directory before system directories. It uses a directory only when all required unset images are regular files there. Tests cover fallback, precedence, incomplete directories, overrides, and error details.

Scope matches the title. Both files serve the system data directory lookup, and the diff changes no dependency.
Clobber not confirmed. The sandbox denied git log, so I did not check the history of these files. The diff only extends resolve_or_default and keeps the earlier lookup order.
Correctness the lookup order, the XDG default and the rule for relative entries are correct. The supervisor and the __krun-vmm child inherit the same environment, so they resolve the same paths. The main design gap is that each image resolves on its own, so one boot can mix a user copy with a system copy. The MissingImage text gives no next step. Two findings repeat open bot threads that have no human reply, because the code at this head still has those defects. I dropped the is_file() thread: it needs a directory named vmlinuz in a system data directory.
Not checked I did not build or run the tests. gitleaks did not run, because the sandbox denied the shell. I read the diff for credentials and found none.

medium · errors_with_missing_image_when_default_absent does not set XDG_DATA_DIRS, so it reads the real /usr/local/share/minimal and /usr/share/minimal. On a host with the machine-wide package, resolve_rootfs_path() returns Ok and unwrap_err() panics. The panic also poisons ENV_LOCK, so the other tests in this module fail. Use scoped_data_dirs with an empty temp dir. This is the only test with this defect. The other tests either expect the user copy to win or set XDG_DATA_DIRS. An open bot thread also reports this point.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in d56109b. The test now uses scoped_data_dirs with an empty temp dir as the system directory, so the host's /usr/local/share/minimal and /usr/share/minimal no longer count. I moved every resolver test onto that helper, and it now clears all three overrides as well. Even a test that only expects the user's copy to win can no longer depend on the host.

medium · This error stops minvmd run and gives no next step. A person at a terminal reads what is missing but not what to do. The text also names the file only in the first path, so the reader must guess which file the directory list refers to. If every XDG_DATA_DIRS entry is relative, the list is empty and the text ends in (). Add one instruction, for example: set the variable to the image file. Name the file for the system directories too, and leave out the clause when system_dirs is empty.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Changed in d56109b. The error now lists each directory it looked in, with the files that directory lacked, and ends with a next step. Example:
no data directory holds the guest images this boot needs. Looked in /home/me/.local/share/minimal (no initramfs.cpio); /usr/local/share/minimal (no vmlinuz, rootfs.img, initramfs.cpio); /usr/share/minimal (no vmlinuz, rootfs.img, initramfs.cpio). Reinstall minimal, or set MINVMD_KERNEL_PATH, MINVMD_ROOTFS_PATH, MINVMD_INITRAMFS to the image files.
The step names only the overrides that are unset. When there is no directory to look in, the text says that and drops the list, so it never ends in (). The text is built in missing_image_text in error.rs. missing_everywhere_names_each_directory_and_what_it_lacked and with_no_directory_at_all_the_error_says_so check it.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
medium · Each image falls back on its own, so one boot can mix sources. A user directory with vmlinuz and rootfs.img but no initramfs.cpio now boots the old kernel with the machine's initramfs, which carries minimald. Before this change that state gave MissingImage. An interrupted install or an older install can leave that state, and the system package can be a different release. resolve_boot_images in the same file and cmd/vmm_child.rs both call the three resolvers separately, and I found no check that the three images match. Choose one directory that has all the needed files, or say in the doc comment that a mix is intended. The fix is local to resolve_or_default and its callers.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, a mix should not boot. Fixed in d56109b the way you suggested. The lookup now picks one directory: the first data directory, the user's and then the system ones, that holds every image whose override is unset. All the defaulted images of a boot then come from one install. A user directory missing a file is passed over whole. It no longer lends its kernel and rootfs to the machine's initramfs.
The three resolvers still run separately, in resolve_boot_images and in cmd/vmm_child.rs. Each one applies the same rule to the same environment and files, so they pick the same directory. No call site changed. An image with its override set is left out of the rule, so MINVMD_KERNEL_PATH=/boot/x with a user directory that has only the rootfs and initramfs still uses that directory, as it did before this PR. The module doc describes the rule. Tests: a_partial_user_copy_is_passed_over_whole_never_mixed and an_overridden_image_is_not_needed_in_the_directory.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
low · With no HOME and no system copy, the person sees required environment variable MINVMD_KERNEL_PATH is unset or empty. The variable is not required, because a system copy now satisfies the lookup. The text also drops system_dirs, although the PR body says the error names every directory looked in. This is the no-HOME case that the PR adds. Report the searched directories here too, for example with an optional default in MissingImage. An open bot thread also reports this point.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in d56109b. The no-data-directory path now returns MissingImage and lists the system directories it looked in. MissingEnv is gone from the image lookup. I did not add an optional default. MissingImage now holds the list of directories searched, each with the files it lacked, and the user's directory is simply absent from that list when none resolves. With no directory at all, the text says neither XDG_DATA_HOME nor HOME is set and XDG_DATA_DIRS has no absolute entry.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
low · This doc comment is updated, but the three public resolvers that call this function still describe the old lookup. resolve_kernel_path (lines 125-130), resolve_rootfs_path (135-141) and resolve_initramfs_path (146-152) say the fallback is <data-dir> only. They also say MissingEnv follows when no data directory resolves, which is false when a system copy exists. Update all three. Those lines are outside the diff, so this finding anchors here.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Updated in d56109b. resolve_kernel_path describes the new fallback: the first data directory, the user's then the system ones, that holds every image whose override is unset. It also says the error is MissingImage. resolve_rootfs_path and resolve_initramfs_path refer back to it rather than repeat it. The module doc and resolve_or_default describe the same rule.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
low · Two behaviours that the PR body states have no test. No test ignores a relative entry: this case covers only an empty entry, and the empty string fails the same starts_with('/') filter. No test covers a daemon with no data directory: every new test sets XDG_DATA_HOME, so the None path through resolve_or_default never runs, with or without a system copy. Add an entry such as share to this case. Add one test that clears HOME and XDG_DATA_HOME under ENV_LOCK.
Relative entry: the XDG_DATA_DIRS case is now /opt/data::share:/srv/share, and it asserts that both the empty and the relative entry are skipped.
No data directory: I did not clear HOME. run.rs and net/answerer.rs read HOME, and their tests do not take this module's ENV_LOCK, so clearing it would race them. Instead, data_dir now reads the two variables and hands them to data_dir_from, and the lookup itself is resolve_in, which takes the user directory as an argument. no_data_directory_without_xdg_data_home_or_home covers data_dir_from(None, None). Three tests cover the None path through resolve_in: one with a system copy present, one without, and one with no directory at all.
Each image used to fall back on its own, so a user directory missing one
file (an interrupted or older install) booted its kernel and rootfs with
the machine's initramfs. The lookup now picks the first data directory,
the user's then the system ones, that holds every image whose override
is unset, as regular files: a directory named like an image no longer
counts.
MissingImage replaces MissingEnv for the no-HOME case. It names each
directory looked in with the files it lacked, says when there was none,
and ends with what to do: reinstall, or set the overrides.
The missing-image test now points XDG_DATA_DIRS at an empty directory,
so a machine-wide install cannot satisfy it. New tests cover the mixed
install, an override, a directory named like an image, a relative
XDG_DATA_DIRS entry and the no-data-directory path. The resolver docs
describe the new lookup.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
One directory per boot: the lookup takes the first data directory (the user's, then the system ones) that holds every image whose override is unset, so a partial user copy no longer boots with the machine's initramfs.
A directory counts only when each needed image in it is a regular file (is_file).
MissingImage lists each directory looked in with the files it lacked, says when there was none (no more ()), and ends with a next step: reinstall, or set the unset overrides. The no-HOME case returns it instead of MissingEnv.
The three resolvers' docs describe the new lookup.
errors_with_missing_image_when_default_absent and every other resolver test isolate XDG_DATA_DIRS; new tests cover the mixed install, an override, a directory named like an image, a relative entry and the no-data-directory path (through resolve_in and data_dir_from, not by clearing HOME).
Prepush on anvil: green except mr-ci (job 01964 at d56109b). The macOS lanes run on this push.
The mr-ci failure in that prepush is cargo-machete alone: it flags minimal-client's unused camino dependency, which #2872 removed on main after this branch's base. GitHub CI runs on the merge with main, so it does not see it. Everything else in mr-ci passed, Kani included.
