Scenario 643b-attach-stalled-redraw-wedge fails on every release back to 2026-10-02 (26 releases run on 2026-10-31). Three wedges on the attach path, each with an in-crate test that fails without its commit.

1. The attach redraw was written on the host loop (c8cba9952). Host::attach awaited the whole redraw write to the new channel before spawning the binding. A redraw is megabytes for a large terminal with per-cell colour, and russh parks a write while the client's ssh window is exhausted, so one client that attached big and stopped reading stopped the host loop, and every other client of the session with it. The redraw is now the new binding's first mailbox message, written by the binding's own task and raced against the shed like any other output; a client that does not read stalls only its binding, which the host sheds as before. This is the September stackv2-redraw 0012 patch, ported to box_runtime.rs.

Test an_attach_redraw_the_client_never_reads_does_not_wedge_the_host_loop (18ee50c70): a 200x400 truecolour screen (redraw past 1 MiB against the harness's 16 KiB window) and a client that never reads; host probes must keep answering and the parked binding is shed. On main the first probe times out behind the attach in 10 s; with the fix it passes in 1.6 s.

2. A long binding write left the channel's read half unread (4964c38ec). With the redraw on the binding, 643b's control arm still failed 1 run in 3 on both base and head: a superseding client that reads at full speed and types at 90% of its redraw got 95% of it and no shell. The write arm did write_all raced only against the shed, never polling rs.wait(); russh queues every window adjust the client sends into the channel's bounded inbound queue (100 deep) and, once it is full, blocks its session loop on the keystroke (Data is a blocking send, WindowAdjusted a try_send). A blocked loop applies no more window adjusts, so the write starves on credit the client already granted: the duplex deadlock of #2197, on the attach path. The write arm now drains the read half while a write is in flight.

3. A binding waited on the host's stdin queue with its own mailbox unread (a897c04d4). With the shell printing while a big client attaches and types, the binding's mailbox fills during the redraw, the host stops reading the pty, the shell blocks on output and stops reading its input, and the host's stdin queue fills behind the pty. The binding then awaited that queue to forward the keystroke, outside any select that drained its mailbox: a four-party wait with no reader, which only the 30 s stall shed could end. On main it is a race in the channel-read arm; the drain made it deterministic after any long write. Input now waits in the binding's own bounded queue and reaches the host through a slot wait kept across select turns (a fresh one per turn loses its place under a flood), beside the output arm in both selects, so output keeps draining while input waits.

Test a_keystroke_typed_mid_redraw_does_not_wedge_the_binding: the shell printing throughout, a client that reads its redraw at full speed and types once at nine tenths of it. Without the drain the channel delivers exactly 2,473,984 of 2,718,583 bytes, the first packet after the keystroke; without the FIFO it delivers the whole redraw and the keystroke never comes back; with both the shell answers in 0.7 s, 15 of 15 pinned to two busy cores.

Lab (job 01573; the candidate was built at edb8a52c2, whose daemon code is identical to the tip, the later commits touch the test file only): 643b passes 12 of 12 on the candidate against 0 of 12 on the release, three rounds on four distros; 735, 735b (the slow-reader scenarios) and 789 (exec duplex) pass on both sides; no regression in the sweep. Before the drain (job 01533) the stalled-client wedge was already 0 of 12 on head vs 8 of 12 on base while the control arm failed 4 of 12 on both; before the FIFO (job 01553) 643b was 12 of 12 with an idle shell. Prepush on anvil at the tip: all 8 steps green (fmt, clippy, workspace tests, the new tests 15 times under load, doctests, native e2e, the mr CI mirror).

Noted, not changed here. 643b has no inbox issue of its own (its header says so; it is the redraw-path sibling of gominimal/inbox#643). fedora and arch rows are ENV in every run (pyte not installable on the image). The minimald suite passes 1268 three times in a row at the tip; two box_actor "present landing" tests and one otel_cli test failed once each inside full workspace runs on a loaded box and never in 15 isolated runs under load, at main or at the tip.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved responsiveness when a terminal’s initial screen is large or the client is not reading output promptly. The host can continue responding to other activity, and a stalled connection is handled without ending the session.
    • Improved delivery of keystrokes and other terminal input while screen output is in progress, helping ensure input reaches the shell in order.
    • Initial screen output is now delivered through the session’s normal output stream when enabled, rather than being sent before the session is ready.

Walkthrough

Host.attach queues the initial terminal redraw through the binding. Bindings buffer inbound SSH messages and forward them as host queue slots become available, including during output writes. Tests cover large redraws with stalled and active readers.

Changes: Attach I/O

Layer / File(s) Summary
Queue the initial attach redraw
crates/minimald/src/box_runtime.rs
When skip_flush is false, Host.attach captures the formatted screen and queues it as the new binding’s first stdin message. Queue failure is logged.
Buffer and forward inbound messages
crates/minimald/src/box_runtime/binding.rs
The binding buffers recognized inbound messages in FIFO order, up to 256 entries. It forwards them as host queue slots become available, including during session-output writes. It clears queued input when the host receiver closes and drains queued input for up to one second after client loss.
Exercise large redraw behavior
crates/minimald/src/box_runtime/tests.rs
FloodedAttach accepts a supplied terminal size and initial screen. Tests check host probes and session state during a stalled redraw, and check input delivery while a large redraw is being read.

…r, a fresh writer on HostGone

minimal-review and CodeRabbit on #2835: the two new items sat between BindingSlot and its doc
comment; the slot arm's comment promised an order the select does not give (it is fair, which is
what matters); and the HostGone exit after a cut-short write kept the old writer, whose interrupted
state could answer the host-gone notice with the wrong byte count, as the shed exit already guarded.

Round 2 (8499ff8): the three review points (doc placement, the arm-order comment, a fresh writer before the HostGone exit). Daemon behaviour unchanged except that last guard; the four attach tests and the full minimald suite (1268) pass on the box; prepush queued.

CodeRabbit on #2835: a failed slot reservation (the host dropped its stdin receiver) ended the
binding with HostGone, and the mailbox could still hold the teardown the host queued before the
receiver went, the shell-exit prompt among them, so the client lost its keep/save/delete choice.
Main ignored a closed queue and kept draining; so does this now: input stops, the mailbox drains to
its end, and its close is what says the host is gone. The fresh-writer guard on that exit goes with
it.

Round 3 (8cfa026): CodeRabbit's point that a closed stdin queue must not end the binding while its mailbox may still hold the host's teardown. Input stops, the mailbox drains to its end, as main did. Attach, shed and exit tests plus the full suite (1268) pass on the box; prepush queued.

Lab after round 3 (tip 8cfa026): prepush on anvil green on all 8 steps (fmt, clippy, workspace tests, the new tests 15 times under load, doctests, native e2e, the mr CI mirror). Soak of the candidate against release 6bddc07 (batch soak-r643b4-20261101, 19 scenarios on 6 distros): no regression; 643b passes on the candidate on every Linux distro and fails on the release; 735, 735b and 789 pass on both sides.

Broad sweep of the candidate (lab batch sweep-r643b4-20261102, job 01701: the 39-scenario repro set on debian-12, debian-13, ubuntu-22.04, ubuntu-24.04, candidate built from this branch at edb8a52c2 against release 6bddc07): no regression, no scenario degraded to ENV, nothing changed otherwise. Six scenarios reproduce on both sides, the open bugs on main (727, 728, 729, 740, 761, 765), none on the attach path.

The owned slot future, the redraw ordering on the fresh mailbox, and the superseded-binding generation checks all hold up. CI is green.

Non-blocking (low): the redraw is now a single m 10BC8 ailbox message written in one write_all (binding.rs:816-841). While that write runs, the binding drains nothing, so the host's 30 s OUTPUT_STALL_TIMEOUT (box_runtime.rs:1878-1895) can shed a binding whose client is reading steadily but slowly. Example: a ~2.7 MB truecolour redraw at under ~90 KB/s while the shell is printing. Before this change, that attach was slow but finished. It's rare, and the fix is local: write the redraw in chunks, or exempt it from the stall clock.

bryan-minimal and others added 6 commits November 3, 2026 08:57
…om the host loop

The host loop wrote the attach redraw straight to the new channel and awaited it. A redraw can be
megabytes (a large terminal with per-cell colour), and russh parks a write while the client's ssh
window is exhausted. A client that stopped reading before its redraw was written therefore stopped
the host loop, and every other client of the session with it: scenario 643b, which fails on every
release since 2026-10-02.

The redraw is now the new binding's first stdout message, written by the binding's own task and
raced against the shed like any other output. A client that does not read stalls only its binding,
which the host sheds like any other stalled binding.

…e the host loop

A 200x400 screen with per-cell truecolour makes a redraw past 1 MiB, far over the test client's
16 KiB window. The client never reads; host probes must keep answering and the parked binding is
shed, not the host. Fails on main (the probe times out behind the attach), passes with the fix.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…light

scenario 643b's control arm: a client that reads its redraw at full speed and types while it is
still arriving got 95% of the redraw and no shell, 1 run in 3, with and without the redraw moved
onto the binding. The binding wrote with one write_all and read nothing meanwhile; russh queues
every window adjust the client sends into the channel's bounded inbound queue (100 deep) and, once
it is full, blocks its session loop on the keystroke. A blocked loop applies no more window
adjusts, so the write starves on credit the client already granted: the duplex deadlock of #2197,
on the attach path. The write arm now drains the read half meanwhile, stashing what arrives (up to
256 messages) and handing it to the host in order after the write; the main arm shares the
channel-message-to-stdin mapping with it.

The test types once past three quarters of a 3 MB redraw against the harness's 16 KiB window,
where the inbound queue is already full of adjusts: without the drain the channel delivers
nothing more and the shell never answers.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…its mailbox sits unread

With the shell printing while a client attaches big and types, the binding's mailbox fills during
the redraw, the host stops reading the pty, the shell blocks on output and stops reading its input,
and the host's stdin queue fills behind the pty. The binding then awaited that queue to forward the
keystroke, outside any select that drained its mailbox, so nothing moved until the stall shed the
client: a four-party wait with no reader. On main it was a race in the channel-read arm; the drain
made it deterministic after any long write.

Input now waits in the binding's own queue (bounded as before by DRAIN_STASH, past which the
channel is left unread) and goes to the host through a reserve arm beside the output arm in both
selects, so output keeps draining while input waits. The mid-redraw keystroke test now runs with
the shell printing throughout: without this it delivers the whole redraw and never the echo.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CodeRabbit on #2835: a failed slot reservation (the host dropped its stdin receiver) ended the
binding with HostGone, and the mailbox could still hold the teardown the host queued before the
receiver went, the shell-exit prompt among them, so the client lost its keep/save/delete choice.
Main ignored a closed queue and kept draining; so does this now: input stops, the mailbox drains to
its end, and its close is what says the host is gone. The fresh-writer guard on that exit goes with
it.

Rebased onto main f6fcbab (T9 landed in the same select: the client's EOF/Close now ends the binding as ClientLost, and the write-arm drain takes the same exit instead of clearing a flag main no longer has). No other change. Lab prepush on anvil (job 01762) and a fresh soak of the rebased candidate (job 01766, 643b x6 on debian-12 and ubuntu-24.04 against rel-f6fcbab7) follow in the next comment.

Lab evidence for the rebased branch (436fe1b on main f6fcbab): candidate r643b5 built from it, soak batch soak-643b-r643b5 (anvil job 01766) on debian-12 and ubuntu-24.04 against release f6fcbab.

scenario rel-f6fcbab7 r643b5
643b-attach-stalled-redraw-wedge x6 per distro fail 12/12 pass 12/12
735-slow-attach-zombie x2 pass pass
735b-healthy-slow-reader-shed x2 pass pass

No regression, nothing degraded to ENV. The release side still wedges the same way as before (a second client gets no live shell within 45 s while a stalled client's 10.8 MB redraw is pending, or the superseding full-speed reader stops short of the redraw's end).

Re-checked at 436fe1ba9. The rebase onto T9 (#2850) looks right, and my approval stands. Two low items, plus my earlier note, which is still open:

  • A Close can drop the client's last input (binding.rs:799, minimal-foundry's thread). Data now goes into to_host. On the next turn, the reserve_owned wait and a Close that is already queued are both ready, and select! picks one at random. When Close wins, the loop breaks with ClientLost and to_host is dropped. A client that sends a paste and then closes loses the last chunk about half the time. The min client sends EOF and waits, so this needs a client that closes right after sending. Fix: try_send whatever is left in to_host before the ClientLost break.
  • Input keeps queuing after input_closed (binding.rs:800-802, 850-852). The read arms still push into to_host, but nothing drains it any more. Once 256 entries queue, the DRAIN_STASH guard stops reading the channel. That is the fix(minimald): take an exec's input off the SSH channel as it arrives, so a command that is not reading cannot park the connection (inbox#1089) #2197 precondition this PR removes, so the teardown write and a client Close can starve again. The window is narrow. Fix: skip the push when input_closed is set.
  • Still open from my approval: the redraw is one write_all (binding.rs:839-873), which doesn't drain the mailbox, so the 30 s stall timer can shed a slow client that is still reading.

CI: minimald-root-integration fails on sudo: unable to execute …/quic443-leaf: Permission denied, which is what #2859 fixes. test-kvm hit the 30-minute job limit, and main's run of that job takes about 25.7 minutes. Neither looks caused by this diff.

…past the host's EOF

Two low items from the r9 review. A client that sends and then closes at once had its last chunk
in `to_host` while `select!` picked the queued `Close` as readily as the stdin slot, and the queue
went with the loop: what is queued is now offered to the host's stdin queue with `try_send`, in
order, before the `ClientLost` exit, on both read arms. And once the host's stdin is closed
nothing drained `to_host`, so a client that kept typing could fill it to `DRAIN_STASH` and stop
the read half, the #2197 precondition this branch removes: past `input_closed` what arrives is
read and dropped.

Round 10 (12a767f on top of r9) takes the two low items from the 436fe1b re-check:

  • A Close dropping the last input. Before the ClientLost exit, on both read arms (the main select and the write-arm drain), what to_host still holds is offered to the host's stdin queue with try_send, in order, until a slot is not there. The chunk a client sends right before closing reaches the host whichever arm the select picks; only a host whose stdin queue is already full loses anything, and that host was not reading its stdin.
  • Input queuing past input_closed. Once the host's stdin is closed the read arms read and drop; nothing is pushed, so to_host cannot fill to DRAIN_STASH and stop the read half, and the fix(minimald): take an exec's input off the SSH channel as it arrives, so a command that is not reading cannot park the connection (inbox#1089) #2197 precondition stays removed.

The third note (the redraw is one write_all that does not drain the mailbox, so the 30 s stall timer can shed a slow client that is still reading) stays a follow-up: it changes what the stall timer measures, not this PR's three wedges, and I would rather land that with its own scenario than widen this one. Say if you want it here instead.

Lab (min-regress batch c5-643b-r10-soak on anvil, job 01803; candidate from 12a767f against rel-f6fcbab7; debian-12 and ubuntu-24.04):

scenario release candidate
643b-attach-stalled-redraw-wedge, 6 rounds per distro fail 12/12 pass 12/12
789-exec-stdin-stdout-concurrent, 2 per distro pass pass
000-baseline pass pass

Prepush on anvil (CI's commands, job 01800): every step green except cargo-machete, which is main's unused camino in minimal-client (#2872). The nine binding and box-runtime tests pass.

On the PR's CI: minimald-root-integration fails on the QUIC block helper's exec (sudo: unable to execute …/quic443-leaf), which #2859 fixes and which the re-run reproduced; test-kvm was cancelled at the 30-minute job limit again (20:38 to 21:09) with main's own run at about 26 minutes, so a re-run will not help until that lane is faster. Neither is from this diff. Once #2859 is in I will rebase for a green native lane.

Correction to the CI note above: the test-kvm cancel at 21:09Z was this push itself (the PR lane cancels an in-progress run when the branch moves), not a limit. On the round-10 head 12a767f the native lane, Kani, commitlint, the shell-installer lane and the main CI workflow are all green; minimald-root-integration passed this time. The KVM lane is still running; I will not touch the branch until it reports.

…slot each, bounded

CodeRabbit's finding on r10: `try_send` popped an entry before it knew a slot was there, so the
entry past the host queue's capacity was dropped like before. The drain now runs once, after the
loop, on a ClientLost exit: each entry waits for a reserved slot, in order, within one second in
all; the host is still reading, so the wait is short, and the bound is for a host that is not.
And minimal-foundry's: the helper's doc sat under `stdin_kind`'s; each has its own now.

Round 11 (3087b5d): the lost client's queued input is drained after the loop with a reserved slot per entry, bounded to one second, so nothing past the host queue's capacity is dropped (CodeRabbit's finding on r10); the helper's doc is its own (minimal-foundry's). Prepush on anvil (job 01820) green except cargo-machete (#2872). Behaviour under the soak is unchanged: same three wedges, same exits.

Scope matches the title. All three files serve the attach redraw and the binding's input path. Clobber none: git log on box_runtime.rs and binding.rs shows only this PR's commits above the merge base, and the removed send_to_host has no other caller. Correctness the core design holds. I traced the slot wait through both selects, and slot is Some only with to_host non-empty, so the expect calls hold. The redraw is the first mailbox message because the host holds the new sender alone until try_send. A write cut short takes a fresh writer on both exits. Two residual problems remain. The stall bound now times a whole redraw, and a full to_host brings the #2197 wedge back. The other findings are a comment that states a false comparison with main, missing tests for the later fixes, and two nits. No printed text changed, and the only new string is a log record. No dependency change. Secrets: a targeted search of the diff found nothing, and I did not run gitleaks. Not checked: nothing was compiled or run, as instructed. The russh queue behaviour comes from the PR body, not from the russh source.

medium · The whole redraw is now one mailbox message, so the 30 s stall bound times the entire redraw and not the client's progress. The binding takes the redraw and then frees no slot until write_all ends. A printing shell fills the other slots at once, tx.capacity() stays 0, and the deadline at box_runtime.rs:1696 never resets. A client that reads steadily but needs more than 30 s for the redraw is shed. The test redraw is 2.7 MB, so about 90 KB/s is enough. Each re-attach sends the same redraw, so that client can never attach while the shell prints. On main this write was outside the stall bound. The doc on OUTPUT_STALL_TIMEOUT (handle.rs:208) says a slow terminal drains a slot in milliseconds, and that is no longer true here. Send the redraw in bounded chunks, or let write progress reset the deadline. This is one instance: state_formatted has no other production caller.

medium · A full to_host brings back the wedge that this PR removes, and it also hits a client that reads at full speed. When the shell is blocked on output, the host's 4-slot stdin queue is full and to_host grows. At DRAIN_STASH entries this guard turns rs.wait() off while the write is in flight. Each Data packet is one entry, so 256 packets during a long redraw are enough, for example a held key on a slow link or a large paste. Then the channel's inbound queue fills, russh blocks its session loop on the next Data, and the write starves on granted credit. The mailbox stays full, so the shell stays blocked and nothing drains to_host. Only the 30 s stall shed ends this. The comments at lines 417 and 866 describe only a client that floods input while refusing output, so they understate the case. Stop the cycle while the stash is full, or state this limit in the comments and add a test. The same guard is on the outer arm at line 817, but that arm does not hold a write.

low · The later fixes have no regression test. The PR body gives a test for each of its three wedges. But the flush on ClientLost (r10, r11) and the input_closed path have none, and the doc says the chunk went missing about half the time. I searched for a test that sends data and then closes, and found none. pty_client_loss_records_detach and pty_client_loss_records_detach_and_runs_detach_hooks close with no data sent. Nothing in tests.rs names input_closed or drain_queued_stdin. Add a test that sends more than the queue's four entries and then closes, and assert that the bytes reach the shell. Add a test that a teardown queued before the stdin receiver drops still reaches the client.

/// `select!` picks the close as readily as the slot; dropped with the
/// loop, that chunk went missing about half the time. The host is still
/// reading (only the client is gone), so the wait is short; the bound is
/// for a host that is not, and what it cuts off is what was lost before.

low · This doc makes two claims the code does not support. The trade of the 1 s bound stays the author's, and only the text is the problem. First, 'what it cuts off is what was lost before' is not true. On main, send_to_host awaited a slot with no bound except the shed, and the Close queued behind the data was read only after that, so input before a close arrived. Second, 'The host is still reading' is true only while the pty accepts input: box_runtime.rs:1968 reads stdin only when stdin_buf is empty. A shell that does not read for 1 s loses the rest of to_host. State that the bound is new and that it can drop input. The comment at line 614 has the same problem: it says the binding never awaits the stdin queue outside a select that drains the mailbox, but this helper does that.

// a write while the client's ssh window is exhausted, so writing it
// on the host loop let one client that stopped reading before its
// redraw was written stall the host loop, and every other client of
// the session with it.

nit · This comment tells the history of the change ('writing it on the host loop let one client ... stall'). It does not explain the code as it stands. Say why the write must stay off the host loop, in the present tense. The same shape repeats in this diff: 'that chunk went missing about half the time' (binding.rs:541), 'bounded by its window as before' (binding.rs:420, 816, 869), and 'The binding now drains' in the test doc (tests.rs, a_keystroke_typed_mid_redraw_does_not_wedge_the_binding).

nit · slot_used is not needed. tokio::select! drops the arm futures before it runs a handler, so the handler can write slot = None directly. The inner select at line 885 does exactly that for the same arm shape. Remove the flag and the check at lines 938-940, so the two arms match.
