fix: what a week of lab telemetry said about the daemon, the CLI and the VM supervisor - #2848
A week of the lab's OTel store (2026-10-26 to 11-02: 8.97 M spans, 12.67 M log records from about 11,000 scenario VMs) read for what it says about the daemon, the CLI and the VM supervisor. It says the store is mostly noise and blind where the scenarios provoke failures. Four fixes, each with the numbers that motivated it:
minimald: a peer that hangs up before the SSH id is not a failed handshake. 333k "SSH handshake failed; dropping connection" WARNs a week, half of all conn spans: min probes the socket before every command by connecting and hanging up (autospawn's liveness check), and a client that gave up on a stalled daemon looks the same. That case logs at debug now. The conn span records an outcome: closed_before_id, handshake_failed or handshake_timeout when the id exchange does not finish; id_exchanged while the session runs; then session for a peer that authenticated, handshake_failed for one that sent its id and failed key exchange, and closed_before_auth for one that hung up before it authenticated. Connection latency can be read without the probes. Other handshake failures keep the WARN. Also: close_connection skips the reap when the connection created no session (348k sessions.reap_unfinalized spans a week, 250k of them empty). Tests
10BC8
: a connect-and-drop gets closed_before_id and no handshake-failure line; a peer that fails key exchange after its id is handshake_failed; a peer refused at auth is closed_before_auth; a real client is session.
common, sandbox: a path two layers both ship is a debug line and a count, a WARN only when they differ. "Not linking … already exists" was 4.83 M of the 12.67 M records (38%, about 450 per box launch, node and npm mostly), and the one collision that matters, same path with different bytes (the October world-rebuild breakage), was buried in it. Same (device, inode) is the same file. Two regular files of equal size are compared byte for byte up to 4 MiB, because a version-string bump keeps the size. Equal-size files above 4 MiB are not compared and are reported as unchecked. A different size, other bytes, a destination that is not a regular file (a symlink is not followed) or an unreadable one keeps the per-file WARN and says why; symlinks compare targets. Each assembly passes its own counts to hardlink_dir_contents_counted, so boxes assembled in parallel never share them. Sandbox::new logs one summary line (same, unchecked, differ): at INFO when something differs, at debug otherwise. A working input that is already in place, linked or copied, follows the same rule. Test covers each case and checks that the first-linked file stays.
minvmd: stop the box egress proxy peer before the switch on a clean stop. "switch socket closed; reader pump stopped" fired on every clean VM stop (1,874 against 1,754 serve spans), because gvproxy was stopped before the peer was dropped. BepPeer::shutdown() (bounded, 1 s) runs first on both teardown paths; the WARN now means a lane lost mid-life. Test: a peer shut down before its switch closes logs nothing; a switch closed under a live peer logs the WARN once.
min: a failed command, RPC or activation step marks its span.cmd, client.rpc and activation_step carried no error status across 2.09 M spans while the daemon logged 4,174 "rpc failed" and the scenarios provoked CLI failures on purpose; a trace query for failed commands found nothing. The three spans declare otel.status_code and record ERROR on an Err, the way minvmd's spans do; events keep their levels. A client.rpc span is also marked when the daemon answers with a refusal inside a decoded response (Errorable::Err, or a SubmitVerdictFault step). A hand-off is not a failure. Tests: the cmd span for a failed command, a success and a hand-off; only the failing activation step; client.rpc against a stand-in daemon for success, Errorable::Err, a fault, an undecodable reply and a timeout.
On anvil: clippy -D warnings --all-targets clean on common, minimal-client, minimal, minimald, sandbox and switch. nextest on the same six crates passes 2648 of 2649; the one failure is boxes_lack_cap_net_raw, which fails on the box whatever the change (inbox#1148). Prepush: see the comment below.
Not in this PR, from the same review: the guest nft classifier table refused on real boots (962 ERRORs a week, unprovoked), and the egress relay's dropped frames have no counter; both get their own issues.
The PR adds hardlink collision classification and reporting, records error status on RPC and command spans, classifies SSH connection outcomes, and changes Bep peer shutdown ordering.
Changes: Hardlink collision accounting
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Classify and count hardlink collisions crates/common/src/lib.rs
File and symlink collisions are classified, counted, and logged. Tests check collision results and confirm that the first-linked destinations remain.
Sandbox rootfs assembly tracks and reports collision totals. Working-input collisions use a shared logger that warns for differing files and debugs for matching or unchecked files.
RPC and command span outcomes
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Record RPC error status crates/minimal-client/Cargo.toml, crates/minimal-client/src/lib.rs
RPC spans record errors for refusals, decoding and other RPC errors, and timeouts. Tests check refusal recognition and span status.
Record command and activation errors crates/minimal/src/cmd/mod.rs, crates/minimal/src/cmd/boxes/create.rs
Command-root and activation-step spans record errors on failure. Tests check status values for failures, success, and handoffs.
Connections track key-exchange and authentication state. ConnectionHandle exposes both values.
Classify connection outcomes and cleanup crates/minimald/src/server.rs, crates/minimald/src/server/tests.rs
Connection spans record outcomes for connection stages. Session reaping runs only when a connection created a session. Tests cover pre-ID closures, handshake failures, and pre-authentication closures.

… handshake; no empty reap span
A week of lab telemetry (9 M spans, 12.7 M log records) had 333k "SSH handshake failed; dropping
connection" WARNs, half of all daemon connections: `min` probes the socket before every command by
connecting and hanging up (autospawn's liveness check), and a client that gave up on a stalled
daemon looks the same. That case now logs at debug, and the `conn` span records an `outcome`
(closed_before_id, handshake_failed, handshake_timeout, session) so connection latency can be read
without the probes. Handshakes that fail for any other reason keep the WARN.
And close_connection skips reap_unfinalized_sessions when the connection created no session: the
span was opened for every close (348k a week, p50 0 ms) and returned at once in all but the few
that had something to reap.

… a WARN only when they differ
"Not linking … already exists" was 4.83 M of the lab's 12.67 M log records in a week (38%, about
450 per box launch), one WARN per path that two packages of a closure both ship, node and npm
mostly. The real collision, the same path with different bytes, which broke world rebuilds in
October, was buried in them.
hardlink_dir_contents now compares the file in place with the one it would have linked without
reading either: the same (device, inode) or the same size is the same file, logged at debug and
counted; a different size, a non-file, or an unreadable destination keeps the per-file WARN and
says why. Symlinks compare targets the same way. Sandbox::new logs one line per assembly with the
two counts, and its working-input arm follows the same rule.

…ean stop
Every clean VM stop logged "box egress proxy peer: switch socket closed; reader pump stopped" at
WARN (1,874 against 1,754 serve spans in a lab week): net.rs stopped gvproxy first, so the peer's
reader found the socket closed before the peer was dropped, and the WARN that exists to show a lane
lost mid-life fired on every teardown. BepPeer gains a bounded `shutdown()` that closes the stop
sender and waits for its runtime thread; the stop arm and the caller-gone path call it before
`switch.stop()`. The WARN now means what it says.

No CLI span carried an error status across 2.09 M spans in a lab week (cmd 271k, client.rpc 787k,
activation_step 1.03 M, all 0 errors) while the daemon logged 4,174 "rpc failed" and the
scenarios provoked CLI failures on purpose, so a trace query for failed commands found nothing.
The three spans declare `otel.status_code` and record ERROR on an Err, the way minvmd's spans do;
the events stay at their levels, since a failed step is often the expected outcome.

…ough a symlink
Two layers shipping the same path with equal sizes were taken as the same file, so a
version-string bump got only a debug line. Equal-size regular files up to 4 MiB are now
compared byte for byte and a difference keeps the WARN; larger ones are counted with the
quiet case and logged at debug as unchecked. The destination is read with symlink_metadata,
so a symlink in place is a non-regular destination, not compared through its target.
link_collision_difference exposes the same rule to callers that link single files.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ile differs
The rootfs collision summary is logged after the optional CS-mirror link, so it includes
that call's collisions. A working-input file already in place is a debug line when it is
the same file or bytes and a WARN when it differs, the same rule as the rootfs layers.

The probe test had been inserted inside the doc comment of
silent_client_does_not_stall_the_accept_loop. It now sits above that comment, intact.

…d handshake
In russh 0.64 run_stream returns once the SSH ids are exchanged and key exchange runs in
the session task, so the conn span recorded "session" for a peer that then failed kex. The
span now records "id_exchanged" at that point and its final outcome when the session ends:
"session" once the peer asked for ssh-userauth (the first request after kex), else
"handshake_failed" with the existing WARN, or "closed_before_auth" for a peer that hung up.

Most RPCs answer a refusal as Errorable::Err inside a response that decodes, so the outer
Result is Ok and client.rpc was never marked failed. A body whose only field is a string
`error` now sets otel.status_code=ERROR on the span; the caller still gets the response as
before.

BepPeer::shutdown discarded the poll task's JoinError along with the timeout. A join error
is now a WARN; a timeout stays silent and is left to the abort in Drop.

Scope matches the title. The four fixes each trace to the PR body, and no dependency file changed.
Clobber not checked. The sandbox denied Bash, so git log, git blame and gitleaks did not run. I read the diff for credentials and found none.
Correctness The main paths are sound. closed_by_peer covers the probe, because russh 0.64.1 run_stream reads the id inline. BepPeer::shutdown is bounded, and the stop drop ends the poll loop. close_connection loses nothing, because reap_unfinalized_sessions already returned early on an empty list. TaskExit carries only non-zero codes, so cmd gets no false ERROR from it. root still closes before Handoff::finish.
The defects are in the telemetry itself. client.rpc misses the Errorable::Err refusals. Handoff::Exit failures do not mark cmd. The collision counts are process-wide, so concurrent assemblies mix them. The status spans and BepPeer::shutdown have no regression test. The conn span's outcome field and the skipped reap span have no assertion either.
Existing threads Several findings here repeat open bot threads that have no human reply. I verified each against the code. I did not repeat the equal-size thread. The doc comment and the test both state that tradeoff, so I expect a maintainer to keep it. The JoinError thread on BepPeer::shutdown is also not repeated, because Drop discarded that error before this PR.
Not checked Nothing was compiled or run. The tests claims come from search and reading only.
crates/minimal-client/src/lib.rs:590medium · client.rpc records ERROR only for an outer Err. Daemon refusals return Ok(Errorable::Err { .. }) from many handlers in crates/minimald/src/rpc.rs, for example lines 454, 655 and 1273. The client decodes those as a successful R::Response, so a refused CreateSession leaves the span unset. A trace query for failed RPCs still misses these refusals, and that is the stated aim of this commit. The comment also links the status to the daemon's "rpc failed" records, but served() logs "rpc served" for these refusals. Classify the decoded response before the span closes, and keep the caller's response type.
crates/common/src/lib.rs:225low · The collision counters are process-wide, and Sandbox::new takes a before and after difference. minimald builds sandboxes per box on a multi-thread runtime (crates/minimald/src/env.rs:650), and mip builds through crates/op/src/specs.rs:517. Two assemblies that overlap each count the other's collisions, so the summary line reports wrong same and differ values for that box. The install paths at crates/minimald/src/env.rs:1840 and crates/mctx/src/env.rs:101 bump the same counters. differ is the number this PR adds to find the bad collision, and it can name the wrong box. Return the counts from hardlink_dir_contents, or pass in a per-assembly accumulator.
crates/common/src/lib.rs:210low · std::fs::metadata(dst) follows symlinks. A regular file that collides with a symlink to an equal-size file is classified Same, and it gets no WARN. A dangling symlink gives Err, so the WARN says "unreadable" for a path that is a broken link. The symlink branch at line 319 is stricter in the mirror case, where a symlink against a regular file WARNs as "not a symlink". Use symlink_metadata. This is local to this function.
crates/sandbox/src/lib.rs:320low · This site demotes the WARN to debug with no comparison and no count. dest is b.join(p.file_name()), so two working inputs from different directories with one basename collide here. The second file is dropped and the build reads the first. The commit says a collision stays a WARN when the files differ, and this path now hides that case. The FileCopy sibling at line 334 keeps its warn!. Use the same classification as hardlink_collision, or keep the WARN here.
crates/sandbox/src/lib.rs:263low · The summary logs before the CS-mirror link at line 285, which also links into rootfs. Collisions from that link are demoted to debug and never reach a summary. With MINIMAL_INTERNAL_CS_BUILD=1 the line under-reports. Move this block after the CS-mirror if. The working-input Dir links at lines 341-342 also count but are not summarized, because they target build.
crates/minimald/src/server.rs:1368low · outcome = "session" is recorded before key exchange finishes. In russh 0.64.1, run_stream returns after read_ssh_id and spawns session.run, so key exchange happens inside session_fut. A peer that sends an id and then fails key exchange reads as session, and the handshake_failed outcome never covers that case. The same applies to the comment that says other handshake failures keep the WARN: those failures log "session ended with error" at line 1384. Rename the outcome to the stage it proves, or set the final outcome after session_fut resolves.
crates/minimal/src/cmd/mod.rs:194low · Only a non-hand-off error marks cmd. Handoff::Exit(code) returns before the record, for every code. crates/minimal/src/cmd/boxes/attach.rs:357 passes ssh's status through it, so an ssh connection failure (255) and the relay exit 141 leave the span unset. A min run task failure does mark it, through TaskExit. The same kind of failure gets a different status by command. The comment says the root span records a failed command whether or not the failure was expected. Record ERROR for Handoff::Exit(code) with a non-zero code, or state in the comment why a hand-off is excluded.
crates/minimal/src/cmd/mod.rs:192low · No test covers the status records on cmd, client.rpc or activation_step. A search for otel.status_code finds tests only in minvmd. ordinary_outcomes_pass_through runs the failing path but asserts only the error text and the closed span names. The next change can drop the record with no failure. a_failed_boot_exports_vm_boot_with_an_error_status in crates/minvmd/src/telemetry.rs:780 is the pattern to copy, with InMemorySpanExporter.
crates/switch/src/bep_host.rs:2041low · This fix has no regression test. No test calls BepPeer::shutdown, and no test reads the "switch socket closed" WARN. The existing BepPeer::spawn tests at lines 3094-3196 are the place to add one: call shutdown, close the switch side, and assert that the WARN does not appear. A test that closes the switch first can assert that the WARN still appears for a lane lost mid-life.
crates/minimald/src/server/tests.rs:306low · The new test sits inside the doc comment of silent_client_does_not_stall_the_accept_loop. The first two lines of that comment now open the new test's doc, and the last line stays alone above the old test. Both docs read wrongly. Move the new test above line 271.
crates/minimal/src/cmd/mod.rs:184low · root.clone() makes the doc at lines 176-178 false. root no longer ends when the instrumented future drops. It ends when run_in_root returns, because the parameter holds a second reference. The hand-off still sees a closed span, and the handoff tests still hold. The doc states the ordering that the hand-off depends on, so correct it. The same applies to crates/minvmd/src/net.rs:873, which still says the peer stops when the runtime drops at switch teardown.
crates/minimald/src/server.rs:1340nit · This comment cites the PR's lab numbers ("333k of these a week in the lab"), not the code. The numbers explain why the change was made, and they go stale. This is a pattern across the diff: server.rs:1487-1489, common/src/lib.rs:254-258, minimal-client/src/lib.rs:587-588, minimal/src/cmd/mod.rs:189-191, minimal/src/cmd/boxes/create.rs:1193-1195, switch/src/bep_host.rs:2031-2035 and server/tests.rs:275-276. Keep the reason in each comment, and leave the counts in the commit message.
Round 2 (c78708e, rebased on f6fcbab): the four original commits plus six that answer the review.
Equal-size colliding files are compared by content (up to 4 MiB; larger pairs are counted as unchecked), the destination is read with symlink_metadata, and the sandbox working-input line warns only when the files differ (minimal-foundry, CodeRabbit).
An RPC whose body decodes as Errorable::Err marks its client span ERROR; the caller sees the same response (CodeRabbit).
The connection span records id_exchanged when run_stream returns and its final outcome when the session ends: session, handshake_failed (with the WARN), or closed_before_auth. A new test sends an id and then garbage (CodeRabbit).
The sandbox collision summary is logged after the CS-mirror link; the BEP poll task's join error is a WARN (CodeRabbit).
The silent-client test's doc comment is whole again (minimal-foundry).
Prepush on anvil (job 01831, the CI mirror: clippy, nextest, miri, kani, actionlint, shellcheck) green except cargo-machete, which #2872 clears. Clippy -D warnings with --tests clean on common, sandbox, minimald, minimal-client and switch.

Scope matches the four stated fixes. The PR body is out of date in two places. It says the collision is classified "without reading either file", but files up to 4 MiB are now read. It lists four conn outcomes, but the code also records id_exchanged and closed_before_auth.
Clobber none found. git log on the five core files shows only this PR's commits above older feature work, and no hunk reverts a recent fix.
Correctness I found no defect that blocks. BepPeer::shutdown is bounded to 1 s and the poll loop exits when stop closes. The close_connection guard is safe because reap_unfinalized_sessions already returned early on an empty list. run_in_root still closes cmd before a hand-off finishes. russh 0.64.1 calls authentication_banner when it accepts ssh-userauth, so past_kex is sound. otel.status_code reaches tracing-opentelemetry through mlog.
Findings are low: one log line that claims more than the code proved, one new line in default mip output, one stale doc comment, comments that narrate the PR, and two fixes with no test.
Open threads not repeated here: process-wide counters in the sandbox summary, SubmitVerdict faults, session recorded before auth succeeds, and the probe test race. These threads have no human reply yet, and each one still needs an answer.
Also noted: the Not copying ... already exists WARN at crates/sandbox/src/lib.rs:345 is still unclassified, so the same collision follows two rules. It is outside the diff.
Not checked: I did not compile or run tests. I did not measure what the byte compare adds to box launch. About 450 collisions per launch can each read two files of up to 4 MiB. gitleaks was denied by the sandbox permissions, so I searched the diff with a regex in its place.

low · This debug line says (same file) for every None from link_collision_difference. None also covers equal-size files above 4 MiB that nobody compared. A person who debugs a wrong input reads that the two files match, but the code never checked them. crates/common/src/lib.rs:303 has the honest wording (same size, too large to compare). The author's reply on the first thread also says these pairs log as unchecked. This is the only such caller. Return the unchecked state from link_collision_difference, or change this text to say the two files match or were too large to compare.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 74192daa1. link_collision returns the three-way LinkCollision, so the unchecked case now logs (same size, too large to compare) and is counted apart from same in the summary. The common test asserts the large-file case is Unchecked.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
low · A person who runs mip reads this line, because crates/mip/src/main.rs:170 sets the default filter to info and writes to stderr. It prints on each sandbox assembly that has a collision, even when differ is 0. In that case the person has nothing to do, and rootfs and first-linked explain nothing to them. The PR calls this overlap the usual case. Log at debug when differ is 0, and keep info or warn for differ > 0. This is one instance: the per-file lines are already at debug or are real differences.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Done in 74192daa1. The summary is INFO only when something differs and debug otherwise, so a default mip run sees nothing for the usual overlap. I also routed the Not copying … already exists WARN you noted through the same rule, so a copied input and a linked input are treated alike.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
low · The doc comment on run_in_root at lines 176-178 is now false. It says root ends when the instrumented future drops, at the end of the await. With root.clone(), the span stays open until the function returns, and the new root.record needs that. The hand-off contract still holds, and the_cmd_span_ends_before_a_handoff_is_finished covers it. The next reader can remove the clone or add an await after the match, because the comment gives the wrong reason. Update the comment to say that root ends when this function returns.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in afaa2b2e1. The comment now says root ends before the function returns, when its last handle drops. After the merge with main, run_in_root drops the slot guard and the clone explicitly, so that is where it closes.

low · This comment narrates the PR. It says cmd carried no error status across 270k spans, which describes the state before this change. The numbers explain why the PR exists, not what the code does, and they age at once. This is a pattern in the diff. The same telemetry figures are in crates/common/src/lib.rs:287-288, crates/minimal-client/src/lib.rs:594-595, crates/minimal/src/cmd/boxes/create.rs:1193-1195, crates/minimald/src/server.rs:1339 and :1508, crates/switch/src/bep_host.rs:2035, and the doc comment of a_peer_that_hangs_up_before_the_ssh_id_is_not_a_handshake_failure. Keep the reason in each comment and move the figures to the commit messages.

Agreed. The lab figures are out of every comment you listed (485fd3c3f, plus the merge, 74192daa1 and 4b314e77f for the ones those commits touched). Each comment keeps its reason; the numbers stay in the commit messages and the PR body.

low · Fix 4 has a test only for daemon_refused. No test shows that a failed command, a failed or timed-out RPC, or a failed activation step records ERROR on its span. The next change can drop any of these records and no test fails. ordinary_outcomes_pass_through already drives the failing run_in_root path but does not read the status, and a hand-off must stay unmarked. Extend that test with a field-recording layer, as SpanLog does in minimald. Add the same check for client.rpc and activation_step.

Added in d0eaf3c64. ordinary_outcomes_pass_through reads the cmd status: ERROR for a failed command, none for success or a hand-off. The activation-step tests check that only the failing step's span is marked. A stand-in daemon drives client.rpc through success, a refusal, a SubmitVerdict fault, an undecodable reply and a timeout.

low · Fix 3 has no regression test. No test calls BepPeer::shutdown, and no test checks that the reader pump stays quiet on a clean stop. The peer tests near line 3098 use drop(peer). A reorder in HostGvproxy or a change to the stop path can bring the WARN back unnoticed. Add a test with stand_in_switch: call peer.shutdown().await, close the stand-in stream, and assert that the log has no switch socket closed. Also assert that closing the stream under a live peer still logs that WARN, because the PR says the WARN now means a lost lane.

Added in 7207f3739. A peer shut down before its stand-in switch closes logs no switch socket closed; a switch closed under a live peer logs it exactly once. The peer's thread now logs to its spawner's subscriber, which is what lets a test see the reader pump. This covers BepPeer's contract; driving HostGvproxy's teardown order in minvmd needs a test hook there, which I'd do as a follow-up if that is what you meant.
run_in_root on main now records the cmd span's outcome and drops every
handle before it returns. The error status goes beside that outcome, in
the same "error" case, instead of in the downcast arm after the span closed.

…e lab figures
The week's counts (333k probe WARNs, 250k empty reap spans, 4k rpc failures,
2 M unmarked spans, 1.9k clean-stop WARNs) explain why the PR exists, not
what the code does, and they age at once. They stay in the commit messages
and the PR body.

The comment said the span ends when the instrumented future drops at the
end of the await. The function keeps a clone to record the outcome and the
error status, so the span ends at the explicit drops before it returns.
The hand-off contract is unchanged.

…ot "same"
The rootfs summary subtracted two reads of process-wide counters, so a box
assembled in parallel (or minimald's env.rs and mctx linking at the same
time) could add its collisions to another box's line, and a differ count
could point at the wrong box. hardlink_dir_contents_counted takes the
caller's LinkCollisions instead, and the statics are gone.
Equal-size files above 4 MiB are never compared, but a working input that
hit one logged "(same file)". link_collision now returns the three-way
LinkCollision, so that case says "same size, too large to compare" and the
summary counts it apart as unchecked.
The summary line is INFO only when some path differs; an overlap where
every path matches is the usual case and logs at debug, since mip's
default filter is info. A copied working input that already exists
follows the same rule as a linked one instead of an unconditional WARN.

serve_submit_verdict answers an unknown session, a wrong state or a failed
resume as Errorable::Ok(BoxStep::Fault), which is not an Errorable::Err
shape, so the client.rpc span of a failed verdict stayed unmarked.
daemon_refused also recognizes a body that decodes as BoxStep::Fault. The
response the caller gets is unchanged.

…its span
Only daemon_refused had a test, so any of the three status records could be
dropped with nothing failing. run_in_root's test reads the cmd span's
status: ERROR for a failed command, none for success or a hand-off. The
activation-step tests check that only the failing step's span is marked.
A stand-in daemon drives client.rpc through success, Errorable::Err, a
SubmitVerdict fault, an undecodable reply and a timeout; every case but
success is marked. The client's dev-dependencies gain tracing-subscriber
for that test's layer (its test module landed with the previous commit).

…g its log
The accept loop serves each connection in its own task, so a later client's
reply did not prove the probe's task had classified its hang-up; if it had
not, the negative assertion passed even against a build that still logs
"SSH handshake failed". The test now records spans and the log on its own
thread, waits for the probe's conn span to close (its task has logged by
then), and checks its outcome is closed_before_id and the debug line is
there. The doc comment drops the week's WARN count.

…onn's outcome
russh calls authentication_banner when it grants ssh-userauth, before any
auth request, so a peer that asked for the service and hung up without
authenticating was recorded as a session. auth_succeeded now sets an
authenticated flag and only that gives "session"; a peer past key exchange
that never authenticated is closed_before_auth. past_kex still decides
whether an error after the id exchange is a failed handshake. The new test
has a client refused on a password and checks its outcome.

…a live peer warns
No test called BepPeer::shutdown, so a change to the stop path could bring
the clean-stop "switch socket closed" WARN back unnoticed. The test shuts a
peer down, closes the stand-in switch and finds no such line; then closes
the switch under a live peer and finds exactly one.
The peer's runtime thread now logs to the subscriber its spawner had, so a
test's scoped subscriber sees the reader pump's lines; with the global
subscriber in production nothing changes.

The client.rpc status test added tracing-subscriber to minimal-client's
dev-dependencies; the lockfile records the edge so --locked builds pass.

Round 3 (4da984b): main merged in (one conflict in run_in_root, main's code kept and the ERROR record moved beside its outcome), and all ten threads answered: per-assembly collision counts with an unchecked class, the summary INFO only when something differs, a session only after authentication, SubmitVerdict faults marked, regression tests for fix 3 and fix 4, and the narrating figures out of the comments. The PR body is corrected. Prepush on anvil (job 01916) green except cargo-machete (#2872).

Four fixes, each with the numbers that motivated it:
connspans:minprobes the socket before every command by connecting and hanging up (autospawn's liveness check), and a client that gave up on a stalled daemon looks the same. That case logs at debug now. Theconnspan records anoutcome:closed_before_id,handshake_failedorhandshake_timeoutwhen the id exchange does not finish;id_exchangedwhile the session runs; thensessionfor a peer that authenticated,handshake_failedfor one that sent its id and failed key exchange, andclosed_before_authfor one that hung up before it authenticated. Connection latency can be read without the probes. Other handshake failures keep the WARN. Also:close_connectionskips the reap when the connection created no session (348ksessions.reap_unfinalizedspans a week, 250k of them empty). Tests 10BC8 : a connect-and-drop getsclosed_before_idand no handshake-failure line; a peer that fails key exchange after its id ishandshake_failed; a peer refused at auth isclosed_before_auth; a real client issession.hardlink_dir_contents_counted, so boxes assembled in parallel never share them.Sandbox::newlogs one summary line (same, unchecked, differ): at INFO when something differs, at debug otherwise. A working input that is already in place, linked or copied, follows the same rule. Test covers each case and checks that the first-linked file stays.BepPeer::shutdown()(bounded, 1 s) runs first on both teardown paths; the WARN now means a lane lost mid-life. Test: a peer shut down before its switch closes logs nothing; a switch closed under a live peer logs the WARN once.cmd,client.rpcandactivation_stepcarried no error status across 2.09 M spans while the daemon logged 4,174 "rpc failed" and the scenarios provoked CLI failures on purpose; a trace query for failed commands found nothing. The three spans declareotel.status_codeand record ERROR on an Err, the way minvmd's spans do; events keep their levels. Aclient.rpcspan is also marked when the daemon answers with a refusal inside a decoded response (Errorable::Err, or aSubmitVerdictFaultstep). A hand-off is not a failure. Tests: thecmdspan for a failed command, a success and a hand-off; only the failing activation step;client.rpcagainst a stand-in daemon for success,Errorable::Err, a fault, an undecodable reply and a timeout. On anvil: clippy
-D warnings --all-targetsclean oncommon,minimal-client,minimal,minimald,sandboxandswitch. nextest on the same six crates passes 2648 of 2649; the one failure isboxes_lack_cap_net_raw, which fails on the box whatever the change (inbox#1148). Prepush: see the comment below. Not in this PR, from the same review: the guest nft classifier table refused on real boots (962 ERRORs a week, unprovoked), and the egress relay's dropped frames have no counter; both get their own issues.
