refactor: call a local daemon a box host, not a provider - #2728
Part of #2669 (step 1 only: code vocabulary, no change in behaviour). Steps 2 (on-disk layout) and 3 (the CLI surface) stay open.
Under the arch#45 ruling a local daemon or VM is a Box Host, and a Box Provider is the API a client lists hosts through. This PR renames the identifiers, doc comments and comments that used "provider" for one daemon or VM so they say "host". minvmd is included: each minvmd supervises exactly one VM, so its "provider dir" is a host dir.
Merge timing
Merge this while no BOX walk agent PR (#2236) is open, so it doesn't conflict with an in-flight round. #2676 is open now and touches box_registration.rs, vm_host.rs and dash files, so land this after #2676 merges (and rebase it then).
Renamed

paths::ProviderKind
paths::HostKind
paths::provider_instance_name

host_dir / host
tests named for providers (e.g. two_providers, single_provider, *_provider_dir_*)
two_hosts, single_host, *_host_dir_* (the two dash snapshot files are renamed to match)
Doc comments and comments that said "provider dir", "provider-instance dir", "provider kind", "per-provider" and similar now say "host dir", "host kind", "per-host". One stale identifier mention in a scripts/session-e2e.sh comment is updated too.
Deliberately kept
git grep -nw -i provider -- crates: 839 before, 292 after (substring count git grep -n -i provider: 1706 → 714). What remains, by reason:
On-disk path or alias.<state>/providers/<name>/ and its "providers" literals, providers locals that point at that directory, local-minimald0 / local-minvmd0, and the design doc path docs/design/2026-10-25-split-user-vmm-provider-dir.md. The sock.rs test that reads that doc keeps matching "<provider dir>/", because the doc spells it that way.
The CLI flag.cli::Provider and its clap values, GlobalArgs.provider (clap derives --provider from the field, so every provider: None / Some(Provider::LocalMinvmd) stays), comments about "the provider flag" / --provider, the finalize_install "configured provider" wording, and the test names about the flag (provider_local_minvmd_selects_the_vm_backend etc.). Only the enum's own doc comment changed (it isn't printed in help).
User-visible text. clap help text (the --minimal-dir and --vm long help, the dash subcommand doc, min bug --guest-timeout-secs), status/error/context strings (error: provider '…' is unreachable, no provider dir resolved …, named VMs need the minvmd provider, …), test assertion messages, the generated shell script comment, the KVM access for the Linux VM provider label, the dash last_provider serde field, and the provider = … tracing field keys. Inline format args inside unchanged strings were renamed with their variables, so the output is byte-identical.
The "provider/host unreachable" exit code name (exit 7), which is the architecture's own term.
Unrelated meanings.graph's BinProvider / SourceProvider, lcache/rcache *BinProvider, OpenTelemetry TracerProvider / LoggerProvider, rustls CryptoProvider, and minimald/sandbox/mctx's network provider (net::provider, "the provider for this PTask's mode").
Docs and specs under docs/ that name the old identifiers (the split-user design doc, spec 10's architecture notes) are left for the doc owners; this PR changes code only.
Verification
cargo check --workspace --all-targets: passes.
just fmt: applied (only the renamed lines moved).
just clippy: fails in this sandbox in the untouched boxes crate (must_use_candidate / double_must_use), because the sandbox has rustc/clippy 1.98.1 rather than the pinned 1.99.1. Clippy scoped to the touched crates with those two lints allowed passes with -D warnings: cargo clippy -p paths -p minimal-client -p minimal -p minvmd -p minimald -p minimald-rpc --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings -A clippy::must_use_candidate -A clippy::double_must_use. CI's clippy lane on the pinned toolchain is the real gate.
Scoped tests (the full workspace suite was not run, because it has crashed the host VM in this sandbox):
cargo nextest run -p paths -p minimal-client -p minimald-rpc -p minvmd: 884 passed, 1 failed. The failure is minvmd cmd::run::tests::port_holder_is_none_when_the_lookup_fails, which panics reading the real socket table (ENOENT) in this sandbox, so it's environmental. run.rs changed only in comments.
cargo nextest run -p minimal --build-jobs 2: 800 passed, including the dash snapshots under their new names.
cargo nextest run -p minimald --bin minimald: 10 passed. The rest of minimald changed only in comments.
Sessions are now grouped and labeled by host. Host reachability remains visible, including when a refresh fails.
Diagnostics
Diagnostic reports use host-based labels for host listings and host-scoped logs, with clearer explanations when host information or logs are unavailable.
Host Directories
Host state, configuration, socket, and default data-volume paths now resolve through host directories. Existing named-VM directory organization and backend behavior remain unchanged.
Terminology
Host directories and related status messages now use consistent host terminology.
Under the arch#45 ruling a local daemon or VM is a Box Host and a Box
Provider is the API a client lists hosts through. Rename the identifiers,
doc comments and comments that use "provider" for one daemon or VM so
they say "host": paths::ProviderKind becomes HostKind, the provider
instance dir helpers become host_dir/host_name, and the dash, diag,
minimal-client and minvmd types and locals follow.
No change in behaviour: on-disk paths (providers/<name>/), SSH aliases,
the --provider flag and its values, clap help text, output and log
strings, serde field names and tracing field keys are unchanged.
Part of #2669 (step 1).

Walkthrough
This pull request replaces provider-oriented terminology with host terminology across path APIs, daemon and CLI code, the dashboard, and diagnostic collection. It renames public types and functions and updates directory resolution. The existing directory layout and most described behavior remain unchanged.
Changes: Host terminology and directory integration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Host path contract and resolution crates/paths/src/lib.rs, crates/minimal-client/src/lib.rs, crates/minimal/src/autospawn.rs, crates/minimald/src/main.rs
Path helpers and client APIs use HostKind and host-directory names. Legacy migration, VM enumeration, and daemon startup call the renamed helpers.
Minvmd state paths crates/minvmd/src/*, crates/minvmd/tests/*
Minvmd state, socket, configuration, diagnostic, and volume paths use host-directory helpers. Named-VM path structure and the described ownership checks remain in place.
CLI host-kind wiring and VM-user setup crates/minimal/src/cmd/*, crates/minimal/src/dirs.rs, crates/minimal/src/task.rs
Box registration, attach, stop, session, and socket-selection paths use host-kind APIs. VM-user layout facts and traversal use host_dir.
Dashboard host grouping and RPC crates/minimal/src/dash/*, crates/minimal/tests/dash_snapshots.rs
Dashboard types, session keys, refresh messages, RPC calls, and sidebar rows use host terminology. Create targeting and failed-host reachability handling remain represented in the updated model and tests.
The terminology change has no identified merge-blocking risk.

A rabbit hops through paths renamed, Host labels bloom where old names reigned. The sockets stay within their place, VM paths keep their nested space. The dashboard groups each host anew, And diagnostic bundles follow too.

… doc
The rename changed the design doc's path in two comments, but the file
keeps its name (docs/design/2026-10-25-split-user-vmm-provider-dir.md);
on-disk names are out of scope for #2669 step 1.
