Summary

Bumps the pinned toolchain (rust-toolchain.toml) from 1.97.0 to 1.99.0, two minor releases behind stable. The MSRV floor (rust-version = "1.95") is unchanged. There's no behaviour change: the rest is the lint fixes 1.99's clippy asks for.

A lab trial on ea1b015 (min-regress job 00476, lab-r730) showed the move is mechanical: fmt, tests, the MSRV check and Kani all pass on 1.99. Current main had a few more sites than the trial (a renamed crate, a new crate, and macOS-only code), all covered here:

Lint (new in 1.99) Sites Fix
assert_is_empty 39 (all tests: boxes) assert!(x.is_empty(), "expected empty, got {x:?}"). In hookscripts the checked call stages scripts, so its result is bound first rather than evaluated twice.
double_must_use 3 (boxes::core::compose) drop a bare #[must_use] where the return type is already must-use
double_must_use 5 (remote-proto, tonic codegen) #[allow] on the module that include!s the generated code, with the reason. Not expect, so a tonic release that stops emitting it doesn't break the build.
must_use_candidate 3 (boxes::core::primitives accessors) add #[must_use]
needless_borrows_for_generic_args 3 (args) map_err(val_err); the closure captures by reference, so it's Copy
chunks_exact with a constant size 2 (minimald::net::switch, minimald-rpc::trace) as_chunks::<2>(), stable since 1.88, so within MSRV
single_element_loop 1 (mfile) the one-entry table loop becomes an if
unnecessary_to_owned 1 (bep macOS keys) from_sec1_bytes(&bytes); CFData derefs to [u8]
result_unit_err 3 (minimald HostHandle::{kill,get_attrs,get_screen}) #[allow] with the reason: Err(()) uniformly means "host loop gone or wedged" (a teardown race). A named HostGone error type would be a better follow-up.
rustc deprecated 1 (minvmd, cfg(test)) fetch_update becomes try_update; test-only, so the MSRV check never compiles it

Testing

  • CI on this branch: clippy (--workspace --all-targets --locked -D warnings), the test lanes, KVM, Kani, cargo-deny, fmt, commitlint and the native daemon e2e all pass. The macOS microVM e2e is still running at the time of writing.
  • Locally (macOS) on the 1.99 pin: cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --keep-going -D warnings is clean for every crate macOS builds (boxes, minvmd, minimald-rpc, remote-proto, bep, …). The Linux-only crates were covered by CI.
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean.
  • MSRV: no change to library code needs more than 1.88 (as_chunks). try_update is cfg(test) only. The nightly MSRV lane will confirm.

Checklist

  • Docs updated if behavior changed (no behaviour change)
  • BREAKING CHANGE: footer present if this is a breaking change (not breaking)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Improved failure messages across configuration, composition, networking, and integration tests to show unexpected values.
  • Refactor
    • Streamlined internal parsing, key handling, and byte processing without changing their existing behavior.
  • Chores
    • Updated the Rust toolchain version.
    • Adjusted internal lint handling and compiler annotations.
    • Address allocation may now return no address if a concurrent update occurs.

The pin was two minor releases behind stable. A lab trial on ea1b015
(min-regress job 00476) found the move mechanical: fmt, tests, the MSRV
lane and Kani all pass on 1.99, and clippy -D warnings fails only on
lints that are new in 1.99 (about 54 sites in about 20 files). The MSRV
floor stays at 1.95; 1.99 doesn't require moving it.

This commit is the pin alone, so CI reports the exact lint sites on
current main. The fixes follow in this branch.

Walkthrough

This pull request updates assertion diagnostics across the boxes tests, adjusts selected Rust annotations and implementation details, and changes the pinned toolchain. One atomic update now returns None on failure instead of retrying.

Changes: Rust maintenance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Box API annotations
crates/boxes/src/core/compose.rs, crates/boxes/src/core/primitives.rs
Three APIs lose #[must_use]; three accessors gain it.
Box test diagnostics
crates/boxes/src/client/*, crates/boxes/src/core/*, crates/boxes/src/daemon/composer.rs, crates/boxes/src/wire/request.rs, crates/boxes/tests/client_flow2.rs
Existing empty-value assertions add failure messages that include the actual values.
Parsing and error handling
crates/args/src/lib.rs, crates/bep/src/keys.rs, crates/mfile/src/lib.rs
Parsing passes the error closure directly to map_err; public-key parsing avoids an intermediate vector; invalid oci-image paths return a fixed error message.
Byte processing and atomic allocation
crates/minimald-rpc/src/trace.rs, crates/minimald/src/net/switch.rs, crates/minvmd/src/box_registry.rs
Two byte-processing sites use fixed-size chunks. take_next uses try_update and returns None if the update fails, rather than retrying.
Lint allowances and toolchain
crates/minimald/src/box_runtime/handle.rs, crates/remote-proto/src/lib.rs, rust-toolchain.toml
Clippy allowances are added to the specified methods and module. The pinned Rust toolchain changes from 1.97.0 to 1.99.0.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title follows the Conventional Commit form type(scope): summary and states the primary change: the pinned Rust toolchain moves from 1.97.0 to 1.99.0. The changeset matches this, since rust-toolchain.toml is bumped and the lint fixes that the new clippy version requires are included. The title does not mention those lint fixes, but it is not required to cover every detail.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template. It has a Summary section that explains the toolchain bump, the unchanged MSRV, the no-behaviour-change claim, and a table of lint fixes with links to the related work. It has a Testing section with CI results, local clippy and fmt results, and MSRV notes. The Checklist is filled in. The Summary does not link an issue with Refs or Closes, and the Testing section does not paste raw command output. The template asks for both, so these are minor gaps.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 92.11% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 38 functions across 20 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Mechanical, with no behaviour change. Checked locally with clippy
-D warnings on the 1.99 pin for the crates macOS can build (boxes,
minvmd, minimald-rpc), and in CI for the rest.

- assert_is_empty (39 sites, all tests): assert!(x.is_empty()) now
  carries a message that shows the value on failure. In hookscripts the
  checked call stages scripts, so its result is bound first rather than
  evaluated twice.
- double_must_use (3, boxes::core::compose): drop a bare #[must_use] on
  functions whose return type is already must-use (iterators, boxed
  closures).
- must_use_candidate (3, boxes::core::primitives accessors): add
  #[must_use].
- needless_borrows_for_generic_args (3, args): map_err(&val_err) becomes
  map_err(val_err). The closure captures by reference, so it is Copy.
- chunks_exact(2) becomes as_chunks::<2>() (minimald net::switch,
  minimald-rpc trace). as_chunks is stable since 1.88, so the 1.95 MSRV
  is unaffected; trace's let-else fallback goes away because the length
  is checked first.
- single_element_loop (mfile): a one-entry table loop becomes an if.
- deprecated Atomic*::fetch_update becomes try_update (minvmd, cfg(test)
  only, so the MSRV check never compiles it).

…ec copy

- remote-proto: tonic-prost-build's generated code puts a bare #[must_use]
  on methods whose return type is already must-use. Allowed on the module
  that include!s it, with the reason. allow rather than expect, so a tonic
  release that stops emitting it doesn't fail the build.
- bep (macOS keys): from_sec1_bytes(&bytes) instead of &bytes.to_vec();
  CFData derefs to [u8] (unnecessary_to_owned).

…ults

Rust 1.99 flags three pub HostHandle methods returning Result<_, ()> (kill,
get_attrs, get_screen). Err(()) means one documented thing on all of them:
the host's loop is gone or wedged, a teardown race that callers discard or
read as unavailable. Allowed with that justification to keep this bump
mechanical; a named HostGone error type is the better follow-up.

The two comments still said 1.97.0 after the pin moved to 1.99.0 (CodeRabbit on #2494). The canary
runs on beta and miri on nightly either way, so nothing executed changes.
