Reverts #2298

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Behavior Changes

    • Resuming a saved box no longer starts its host automatically. The host starts when the box is attached or used for execution.
    • Saved network records reload detached and are withdrawn after the grace period if no relay re-advertises them. Resuming a box can restore a withdrawn record.
    • Relay connections no longer send gratuitous ARP announcements.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified when network records are withdrawn and how resumed boxes can restore them.

📝 Walkthrough

Persisted box rows now reload detached and use DETACH_GRACE; resuming a withdrawn row uses RESUME_ATTACH_BOUND. Resumed own-address sessions no longer eagerly launch a host. Gated switch attachments no longer send gratuitous ARP announcements.

Changes: Box Network Lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detached row lifecycle
crates/minvmd/src/box_registry.rs, crates/minvmd/src/net/egress_gate.rs, docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md
Persisted rows reload detached and are withdrawn after DETACH_GRACE unless relays carry their frames. Resuming a withdrawn row uses RESUME_ATTACH_BOUND. Tests and the networking specification reflect these lifecycle rules.
Resumed session host startup
crates/minimald/src/box_manager.rs, crates/minimald/src/box_actor/tests.rs
Resumed OwnIp sessions with box_addresses enter the running map without an eager detached host launch. The restart test for that launch behavior was removed.
Switch attachment relay setup
crates/minimald/src/net/switch.rs
Gated UDS and vsock attachments now proceed from connection upgrade to relay startup without a gratuitous ARP announcement. The associated UDS test was removed.

Restarting minvmd can leave a detached box row and its proxy attachment standing past the required withdrawal deadline. Preserve the original deadline or withdraw the row on reload before merging.

Approved: no findings at c2fdbf550d6a.

Nothing to do.

Clobber: this is an intentional revert of #2298. After the revert, a reloaded row is detached and has the 45 s grace again, so a cold VM boot can withdraw it. That is the known behaviour before #2298, and the spec text now says so. If that was not intentional, restore the earlier change.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Preserve the attachment-end withdrawal deadline across reloads.

If a row detaches and minvmd restarts before its grace expires, this assignment starts a new 45-second grace period. For example, a restart 40 seconds after the attachment ends permits the row and its proxy attachment to stand for about 85 seconds. That exceeds NET-138’s new 60-second bound. Persist enough liveness information to honor the original deadline, or withdraw a previously detached row during reload.
