fix(minimald): destroy run-owned boxes on restart instead of resuming them - #2345
norrietaylor merged 24 commits into
Conversation
… them A box minted for a single `min task run` (no --keep) was only torn down after the run's task returned: if the client died, or the daemon or VM restarted mid-run, the box stayed Active forever and every restart resumed it as if it were a normal session. The daemon now persists an ends_with_run marker on the record before the run's task starts, and the restart resume destroys marked records through the same actor-based teardown DeleteSession takes (so on_destroy hooks still run) instead of resuming them. The marker serde-defaults to false, so pre-existing records resume unchanged. Co-authored-by: Copilot <223556219+Copilot@users.noreply.github.com>

…un-owned-boxes-on-restart-14edc351e8fc3462
Address the /revise review of the run-owned teardown (NET-131): - The create now writes `ends_with_run` from a new `BoxConfig` field that `min task run` sets without `--keep`. A restart between the create and the task exec no longer resumes the box. This replaces the `MarkRunOwned` message, which rewrote the record outside the box actor. - The resume's teardown actor does not register the box's name, and a destroy withdraws a name route only when the route is its own. A same-named box that the resume brought back keeps its route. - The resume spawns the wait on `on_destroy` hooks, so startup and queued RPCs do not wait on them, and logs each hook failure. - Rename the shared helper to `destroy_box_record`.

The resume tears a run-owned box down off its own message handling, so wait_for_record_gone can read the record while the teardown deletes it. That read finds the index entry, misses the record, and answers NotFound. The helper unwrapped it and failed under load in CI.

Round 2 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as No The new test resume_teardown_keeps_the_route_of_a_same_named_box now passes reliably, also under CPU load. All of #2298's tests pass on this branch, and its resume host launch, gratuitous ARP and reload code are present. The diff against main contains only the run-owned box change. Notes from the agent: Clobber: the claim does not hold at this head. Every commit on the branch (8aa291c, c801138, a744fc6, beeae05) and the merge of main (3ab0f09) carry #2298's code: the resume_own_ip_host launch and its doc in box_manager.rs, the lease announcement in net/switch.rs, and the #2298 test in box_actor/tests.rs. git diff origin/main HEAD does not touch switch.rs, box_registry.rs or egress_gate.rs. In box_manager.rs it removes only the inline DeleteSession teardown, which moved into destroy_box_record. #2298 did not write those lines. The clobber check probably compared against an older base. CI fix: under load, the wait_for_record_gone test helper read the record while the detached teardown deleted it. get_record found the index entry, missed the record and answered Err(NotFound), and the helper unwrapped that error. The helper now counts NotFound as gone. The same race exists in production: a GetRecord that runs at the same time as a delete answers a NotFound error, not None. I did not change that because it is outside this round. Clippy: this box runs cargo 1.98.1, but rust-toolchain.toml pins 1.97.0. The 1.98 lints fire in minimald-rpc/src/trace.rs, box_runtime.rs and net/switch.rs, and those files are not in this pull request. box_manager.rs has no clippy hits. I did not run just clippy-strict. |

The resume's teardown of a run-owned box brought its actor up outside `running`, then ran the on_destroy hooks detached with the record still in the store. Any RPC naming the box in that window started a second actor: a DeleteSession from the surviving `min task run` client ran the hooks a second time, concurrently, and an attach or exec registered the name and left a stale route in `running` after the record was gone. start_box_teardown now puts the actor it brings up into `running` and reuses one already there. The resume's detached task evicts it once the teardown ends, and DeleteSession removes it after its destroy. A concurrent DeleteSession reaches the same actor, whose closed mailbox answers the second destroy with no hooks run. Also add the spec 29 BOX-154 TODO, reword the resume log line and note that the resume is Linux-only in the ends_with_run field doc.
Stale: left on an older head. Its findings are fixed at bcd47f5, and ARCH passed that head.

A run's box no longer resumes after a daemon restart. This conforms to line 495: a non-PTY box's processes are not resumed. The restart still deletes the run's running record. Line 495 sets that record to stopped and keeps it. This head declares the delete as an interim, with the flip and gominimal/inbox#731. C1 is that flip, and it stays open as a filed residual until the record gains a stopped state.

The client sets it for a run's box, and the create writes it on the first record, so there is no later message and no window where the box reads as plain.DeleteSession, soon_destroyhooks run, and the actor does not register the box's name.
