Summary

Puts the own-ip deny-all egress default in force (NET-074/075), and builds every precondition the flip needs first. An own-ip box with no egress section now has no external reach unless the host opts out (NET-077).

The two phase constants, sessions::EGRESS_DEFAULT_PHASE and minvmd's UNREGISTERED_SOURCE_PHASE, change together in one commit, as the const assertion requires.

Preconditions (one commit or more each)

  1. Address lifecycle. Every row removal returns the box's switch and loopback addresses, including the drainer's removals. An address is reused only after a quarantine (SWITCH_ADDRESS_REUSE_QUARANTINE, 300 s) and under the box-id epoch. A withdrawal carries the box id and refuses a mismatch. When addresses run out, the error is explicit and carries live, quarantined and capacity counts. Every destroy path in the CLI and TUI withdraws the row.
  2. Row survival (NET-138). When a shuttle closes, its rows become detached. They are withdrawn after a 45 s grace unless the creator resumes them. minvmd persists its registry on the host (0600, written atomically) and reloads the rows as detached. Only the creator can resume a row, never a guest. An unattributed resume is bounded at 5 min.
  3. TUI registration. The dashboard registers own-ip boxes through the same minimal-client code as the CLI.
  4. Self-allocation retired (NET-102, NET-133). Task sandboxes get their addresses from the host as child rows of the box. A box and its task rows are one liveness unit. Task slots are best-effort with a floor. On a VM host, the daemon no longer draws its own addresses.
  5. Fail closed. An unreachable VM host exits 7. Running out of host addresses exits 8. A control socket or report door that cannot bind is fatal. take_next uses a checked add.

Address reuse

The rule that addresses are never wrapped or reused is implemented as follows. An address is never wrapped silently. It is never reused inside the quarantine or across an epoch mismatch. Exhaustion is an explicit error. T 8000 he quarantine is not persisted, because a minvmd restart is a VM restart.

Exit 8

Exit 8 ("insufficient resources") already covers cpus, ram and disk. This PR also uses it for host address exhaustion. Machine mode reports insufficient_resources.

The flip

  • Activate prints one line for a bare own-ip box when the host has not opted out:
egress: deny-all (default for an own-ip box with no egress section); declare reach with the --allow-subnets, --allow-dns-hosts and --allow-protocols flags
  • Spec 18: NET-076's announcement window has ended. Its annotation and verify line are updated, and so is the rollout sentence. 03-spec R2.1 gets a note that NET-074 supersedes it for own-ip boxes.
  • session-e2e.sh:
    • the NET-076 probe now asserts the note;
    • new NET-074 legs on a bare box: no external connect, fast resolution failure, and host.min.internal still resolves;
    • control boxes that need reach now declare it.
    • NET-077 stays with the unit test deny_all_opt_out_keeps_prior_default.
  • Docs: cli-min, cli-minimald (the --egress-deny-all-opt-out row), and cli-minvmd (MINVMD_EGRESS_DENY_ALL_OPT_OUT is read only when minvmd starts).

Breaking change

  • An own-ip session with no egress section loses external reach after the upgrade or a daemon restart. To keep it, declare reach with the --allow-* flags, or opt out:
    • native host: minimald --egress-deny-all-opt-out;
    • VM host: MINVMD_EGRESS_DENY_ALL_OPT_OUT, set in the environment that starts minvmd, then restart minvmd.
  • On a VM host, a session activated before this release must be destroyed and activated again before it can run tasks.
  • An older minvmd refuses the new persisted registry file.

Known limits

  • If a new client talks to an older daemon that still runs the announced default, the client prints the in-force note even though that daemon gives the box allow-all.
  • NoTaskAddresses is not mapped to exit 8.

Test plan

  • Linux (aarch64): cargo nextest run --workspace --profile ci --locked: 3574 of 3574 passed
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --locked -- -D warnings and cargo fmt --check are clean
  • macOS: clippy and nextest for minvmd and sessions (1108 of 1108)
  • shellcheck on scripts/session-e2e.sh is clean; the prose lint shows no new alerts
  • session-e2e.sh on a VM or KVM lane (not run locally)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Own-address boxes now register with the VM host and receive dedicated task addresses. Their network registration can resume when reattached and is withdrawn after the shell exits.
    • Activating an own-address box without an egress policy applies deny-all by default and displays a notice. Hosts can opt out.
    • Session activation reports distinct errors when the VM host is unreachable or has no available addresses.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Task startup now verifies that a registered box’s host-side network row is active and provides recovery guidance when it is not.

…use them after a quarantine

minvmd handed switch addresses from a count-up cursor that never regressed, so
every create spent one for good and a long-lived host exhausted its plan. The
cursor is now a hand-out book modelled on minimald's IpAllocator: never-drawn
addresses first, then the one returned longest ago, eligible only once its
quarantine has passed and no row or revocation holds it. Arithmetic is
checked; an address whose quarantine end would overflow stays out.

- switch: SWITCH_ADDRESS_REUSE_QUARANTINE (300 s) is the shared constant;
minimald's REUSE_QUARANTINE is it, and minvmd asserts it outlasts the
gate's reply-flow and DNS admission windows.
- Every row removal returns its switch address: withdrawals, the drainer,
and a registration refused after its draw. A row never attributed returns
it with no quarantine; the loopback address keeps the answerer's own.
- The drainer's withdrawal releases the answerer's loopback address.
- WithdrawBoxRequest carries an optional box_id; a withdrawal naming
another box's id is refused, so a late one never removes a newer box.
- Exhaustion errors name the live, quarantined and capacity counts and when
the next address frees; a capacity refusal is logged at warn.
- Clients withdraw the row through minimal-client's withdraw_box_row_beside:
the dashboard's destroy, both after-attach releases (the pair is read
before the attach), and the CLI, which passes the box id where it holds
  one.
…ist and resume them

A relay's end no longer withdraws the rows it carried at once. The drainer
detaches each carried row (by switch address and box id) and withdraws it
only when no relay re-attributes it within DETACH_GRACE (45 s, swept every
second, so withdrawal still lands inside NET-138's 60 s).

The registry persists the host-side creator's records to box-registry.json
in the state directory (0600, written to a fresh tmp file, fsynced and
renamed, versioned). A restarted minvmd reloads standing rows as detached,
so a row nobody re-attributes is withdrawn after the grace, and address to
box facts still come only from the creator or minvmd's own persisted state.

The creator can resume a row it registered: ResumeBox re-registers a
withdrawn row under its record's id and addresses, or clears a detached
row's grace. The CLI resumes before attach and exec. The guest, relaunching
a host after its binding launch, asks the host whether the row stands
(RowStanding) instead of refusing outright.
…n that resumes a row

A row its creator resumed no longer awaits its box's first frame forever.
If no relay carries it within RESUME_ATTACH_BOUND (5 min, several times a
VM cold boot plus a box host's launch), the drainer withdraws it as at a
detach grace's end: both addresses go back, and the creation is kept
dormant so a later resume still works.

The guest's BoxHostRowEnded refusal now says what recovers the box: the
client resumes before every attach and exec, so a re-run resumes it, and
a new activation is the way only when the host no longer holds the
creator's record.

A test pins that the guest door's row-standing read answers only from
the asking VM's own supervisor's table and changes nothing. Comments state
why quarantine is not persisted, why dormant creations are not capped, and
that survival across a minvmd restart rides the creator's resume.
…n-ip boxes like the cli

The dashboard created own-ip sessions with no handed addresses and never
registered the box with minvmd, so on a VM-backed host the guest refused
every own-ip create from `min dash` (NET-081) with a raw RPC error.

The CLI's registration exchange moves into minimal-client's new
box_registration module, which both front-ends now call:
- register_box_for_activation (by provider kind, the CLI) and
register_box_beside (by the ssh socket the dashboard holds), each with
an autogen re-mint variant over one loop; one request, the 5 s bound
  and the activation's error text.
- BoxLease and finalize_holding_lease: the row held until the session is
  active, committed only then.
- withdraw_box_row (by box id, NET-133) and resume_box_row (NET-138).
The autogen session name and its collision retry move to
minimal_client::session_name. The CLI calls the moved code with its
messages byte-identical.

On a VM-backed host (a control socket beside its ssh socket) the
dashboard's own-ip create names an unnamed box the CLI's way, registers
it, creates with the handed addresses, holds the lease across upload,
configure and finalize, and withdraws the row by its id on every
failure after it exists. A native host keeps the plain create. The
dashboard's attach asks for the box's row back first, as the CLI does.
…sk addresses with each box

Retire daemon-side self-allocation under a VM host (NET-138): once a control
socket exists the in-VM daemon draws nothing.

- RegisterBoxRequest.task_slots (serde default 0); clients ask for
  TASK_SLOTS_PER_BOX = 4, capped host-side. minvmd draws one hand-out
address per slot and files each as a task row of the box: its box id
(NET-133) and egress, no ingress, names, dynamic grant or credentialed
lane, no proxy attachment or BEP share. RegisteredBox.task_addresses
hands them back; RegisteredBox is no longer Copy.
- Task rows are withdrawn with their box on every removal path (creator
withdraw, grace expiry, resume bound, refused or uncommitted lease),
never at their own relay's end; persisted in the box's creation and
reloaded and resumed all or none with it. Rows are registration-frozen,
so the box's policy reaches its task rows by construction.
- SessionConfig/Record.task_addresses carry them to minimald. A task run
(exec TaskRun and in-box min run) attaches at the first free slot via
attach_handed; all held is "N task runs already in progress for this
  session".
- SwitchClient::attach refuses on a HostShuttle switch with
SelfAllocationRetired (destroy and re-activate); LocalSpawn still draws
(NET-102). Tests that drive the draw path over a shuttle switch opt in
  through a cfg(test) allow-draw builder.
- Spec 18: NET-138 allocation and withdrawal notes, NET-133, NET-102.
…runs; best-effort task slots

A box and its task rows are now one liveness unit (NET-138). The box row
detaches only once no relay carries its own address nor any of its task
addresses. A relay carrying either clears the detach and the resume bound,
and the grace's end withdraws the unit. Before, a box whose own relay ended
was withdrawn after the grace while a task run still carried.

Task slots are best-effort. The registry draws the box's own address first
and refuses only if that fails. It then draws up to TASK_SLOTS_PER_BOX task
addresses while the hand-out book can spare more than TASK_SLOT_FLOOR (16),
and registers with however many it got. The floor keeps room for sixteen new
boxes' own addresses: about an eighth of a carved /24's run of 125, and
negligible on the default plan. The reply's task_addresses says how many the
box got. The client warns when it got fewer than four. A task run on a VM
host for a box with none gets NoTaskAddresses, which names the capacity and
the remedy.

Downgrade limit: an older minvmd refuses the new box-registry.json version
and reloads no rows, so it fails closed. Sessions that predate task
addresses get the re-activate refusal.
…sed on an unreachable vm host

An own-address activation on a VM-backed host that cannot register its
box now fails closed with the architecture's reserved exit codes (#1790):

- minimal-client: HostUnreachable for an unresolvable provider dir, a
connect, write or read failure on the box control socket, a close with
no answer, and the 5 s bound; raised by the registration and by the
row resume before an attach or exec, which now fails instead of
warning. A refusal the daemon answers is never HostUnreachable.
- HostAddressesExhausted for the capacity refusals (switch plan, loopback
slice, zone answerer). minimald-rpc holds the refusal openings minvmd
spells them with, so the client's classification cannot drift.
- min exits 7 on HostUnreachable and 8 on HostAddressesExhausted, every
  other failure 1; a machine-mode run answers host_unreachable or
insufficient_resources with the same code. min dash shows the message.
- minvmd: the control socket and guest report door binds are fatal at
boot (bind_box_doors), naming the socket and the cause; the comments
that described the announced interim are updated (#1775's surface is
not built; a fatal bind satisfies #1790).
- The tests' loopback cursor (take_next) advances by a checked add and
  never wraps.
Flip sessions::EGRESS_DEFAULT_PHASE and minvmd's
UNREGISTERED_SOURCE_PHASE from Announced to InForce together, so an
own-address box with no egress section gets the deny-all default
(NET-074) and `min session policy` shows `deny-all (default)`
(NET-075). The host gate now refuses a publish at an in-plan address
no row holds instead of admitting it as an interim.

The announcement (NET-076) is retired. Activate now prints a one-line
in-force note for such a box when the daemon is not opted out, and
deny_all_in_force_note_printed replaces the announcement test. The
Announced variant stays for the tests that pin that arm by name.

Tests that leaned on the announced arm now register the row they need
or assert the in-force behaviour. Spec 18 records that the NET-076
window ended, 03-spec R2.1 points at NET-074, and session-e2e asserts
the note, a real NET-074 check, and gives the boxes that need reach
explicit egress.

BREAKING CHANGE: an own-ip box with no egress section now has no
external reach. Existing such sessions lose reach after the upgrade or
a daemon restart. Declare reach with --allow-subnets, --allow-dns-hosts
and --allow-protocols at activate, or an egress section in
minimal.toml. To keep the earlier allow-all default, start minimald
with --egress-deny-all-opt-out, or on a VM host set
MINVMD_EGRESS_DENY_ALL_OPT_OUT=1 in the environment that starts minvmd;
minvmd reads it only at startup, so restart minvmd to change it.
Sessions activated before this release must be destroyed and
re-activated for task runs on VM hosts.
cli-min says an own-ip box with no egress flags or section gets
deny-all, shows the activate note, and names how to declare reach and
the two opt-outs. cli-minimald gains the --egress-deny-all-opt-out row.
cli-minvmd says MINVMD_EGRESS_DENY_ALL_OPT_OUT is read only when minvmd
starts, must be in the environment of the process that starts it (the
first min that starts the VM included), and needs a minvmd restart to
change.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This PR adds shared VM-host box registration, task-address allocation, row resumption and withdrawal, and host-row checks. It also changes the shipped egress default to deny-all for own-address boxes without declared egress, adds packet refusal handling, and updates CLI, dashboard, daemon, VM-host, test, and documentation code.

…eny-all default

The stock-install posture proof's own-IP box (e2e-posture-ownip) proves
an outbound request from inside the box (NET-107) beside its ingress. A
bare own-address box is deny-all by NET-074, so it now activates with
--allow-subnets 0.0.0.0/0, which also leaves the relay forwarding
8BD0
 its
external lookups. The step line and the case header quote the new
command. Every other bare own-IP box in the suite only serves ingress,
answers a sibling's dial, resolves the zone, or proves the default, so
none of them gains a flag.
…ess help

The help said a box that declares no egress keeps the default the rollout
phase resolves. It now says the box gets the default NET-074 sets:
deny-all for an own-ip box, unless the host opts out. The host gate's
unknown-source rule doc no longer ties the rule to the announced interim:
it names an out-of-plan source, and an in-plan one takes the unregistered
rule.

Verdict COMMENT — APPROVE withheld: 3 unresolved threads — coderabbitai[bot] crates/minimald/src/session.rs:4373, coderabbitai[bot] crates/minvmd/tests/egress_allowlist_integration.rs:525, coderabbitai[bot] docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md:535. No findings.

…gh the host gate

On the VM lane the in-VM relay refuses a bare SYN at a port no publish
dials with a reset sourced from the box (NET-014). The host egress gate
decided that reset by the box's egress rules, so under the in-force
deny-all default a sibling's connect to an unpublished port timed out
instead of being refused. Native relays write the same reset without
passing the egress verdict.

The ingress leg now notes each bare SYN it delivers at an unpublished
port, and the verdict admits, once and inside a short window, only the
reset that refuses it: RST|ACK, sequence zero, no payload, acknowledging
the noted SYN, exact reverse tuple. Anything else the box sends, its own
connects included, is still decided by its rules.
Since the VM host keeps a box's row across its shuttle's end and the CLI
resumes it before attach and exec, a registered box kept at the
shell-exit prompt can be attached to and exec'd into again. The Keep
item now says the registration ends with the shell and is restored on
the next attach or exec, instead of that the session can only be
destroyed.

The daemon's refusal of a rowless host stands for a box the VM host
holds no row for (a client that does not resume, or a failed resume);
its comments and the refusal test's doc say so.

The VM lane's shell-exit leg becomes eib_vm_kept_box_resumes_leg: the
shell looks up a zone name (an admitted frame, so the relay's end
detaches the row) and exits, Keep is answered, and the leg waits for the
row's withdrawal. It then asserts an exec succeeds, the host's row read
is the same row as before the exit (box id, switch address, allow-list),
the box holds that switch address, and the zone name resolves again.

…g them

Two box-registry tests asserted no live switch address right after the
table emptied. The drainer removes a withdrawn unit's rows before it
returns their addresses, so under a loaded test run the count was read
in between and one address was still out.

…omment

The opt-out flag belongs to `minimald run`; there is no `listen` subcommand.
…ote a NET-074 child

NET-076's condition, the announcement window, no longer holds. Its verify now proves that by
asserting the shipped phase is InForce. The note printed in force becomes a child of NET-074.
A relaunch the VM host daemon confirmed a standing row for cleared slot_holds_row and never set it
again, so every later attach or exec read the row over the report door, and a door that did not
answer refused the live host with BoxHostRowEnded. host_row_lost now leaves the confirmation for
the attach or exec launch that follows, and that launch marks its host as holding the row. A hook
launch, which reads nothing first, does not.

Comment thread crates/minimald/src/session.rs Resolved
The host gate notes every bare SYN the ingress leg delivers at an
unpublished port so the box's refusal of it can reach the client
(NET-014). The notes were bounded per box only, so one client flooding
SYNs could take every note and leave another client's connect to time
out instead of being refused.

Each note now records its client's address, and a source holds at most
an eighth of the per-box cap (REFUSAL_NOTES_PER_SOURCE); at its share,
once expired notes are swept, a new SYN from it notes nothing.
…sumes

A row-standing read and a task run's attach asked only whether some row
stood at the box's switch address, so a row another box was handed the
address under answered for it, and a resume found its creation by the
session's name, so a renamed session could not resume its box.

The registration's box id now rides the session record (Record and
SessionConfig gain an optional box_id, serde-defaulted for records on
disk and older peers) from the CLI's and the TUI's create. The daemon's
row-standing read names it, and the VM host answers true only for a box
row of that id; a task run checks the same before it attaches. A
registered own-ip record naming no box id is answered as not standing
and its task runs are refused: fail-closed, never an address-only
fallback. Sessions with no host registration are unaffected. The CLI's
resume carries the record's box id.

BoxId moves to the sessions crate so the record can hold it;
minimald-rpc re-exports it.
…ddresses

Review fixes to the host's box registry (NET-138):

- A resume of a row that stands leaves it as it stands: it neither
clears a detached row's grace nor arms the 5 min resume bound, so a
detached row is withdrawn within 60 s of its attachment's end
whatever its creator does (NET_138_WITHDRAWAL_BOUND, const-asserted).
A resume racing the grace's end withdraws the expired row and
reinstates it rather than answering with a row about to go. Only a
reinstated row takes the resume bound, counted over its unit: a
carried task row keeps it standing.
- A relay already carrying a source re-marks a row reinstated under it
(BoxTable::carry, keyed by a row epoch), so the row is attributed,
its bound cleared and its relay's end detaches it.
- A creation keeps its switch and task addresses reserved while dormant
and across a reload, and its published address stays with the
answerer; only its creator's destroy releases them. Exhaustion stays
  an explicit refusal.
- A dormant creation holds its name. A resume finds its creation by box
id first, so a rename does not break it.
- A resume of a standing row is answered from the row alone, asking the
  answerer nothing.
- A registry file that cannot be read, parsed or versioned is renamed
aside with an .unusable-<secs> suffix and logged at error level,
never overwritten; when it cannot be set aside nothing is persisted.

Tests that withdrew a client box's row to free its addresses now
destroy it, and the drainer tests no longer race the address return.
…ons and box-id checks

The annotation now states that a resume never holds a detached row past
60 s from its attachment's end, that a dormant creation keeps its
addresses and name reserved until its creator destroys it, that the
row-standing read and a task run's attach check the box id, and that an
unusable registry file is set aside rather than overwritten.
…string

BoxId deserialized through a borrowed &str, which a reader cannot lend,
so a session config or record carrying a box id failed to read off the
daemon's socket or from disk. It now reads an owned string.
The row-standing read that lets an ended box host be relaunched is a
read, not a reservation: the VM host daemon may withdraw the row at its
grace's end between that read and the new host's attach, and the slot
was then marked as holding a row that no longer existed, so later
attaches and execs skipped the check while the gate dropped the host's
traffic.

The relaunch now reads the row again, by box id, once its host is up
and before the slot is marked; a row gone in between ends the new host
and refuses the launch with BoxHostRowEnded.
…r kind

A native minimald binds its answerer door as control.sock beside its ssh socket, the same
name the VM host daemon's control socket has, so the dashboard's existence test sent every
own-ip create on native Linux a Register the door refuses. vm_host_control_sock now requires
the ssh socket's provider dir (or the VM host dir a named VM nests in) to be local-minvmd<N>,
as the CLI keys on the provider kind; register_box_beside and create_registering use it.
…untorn

Task runs attach at the session's handed task slots, and an in-box `min run` the Env actor
aborts mid-await drops its OwnIpGuard without the explicit teardown, so the slot's lease
stayed held and four such ends left every later run refused as TaskSlotsBusy until restart.
The guard now holds its attach as an Option the teardown takes; a drop that still holds it
spawns the same release on the runtime it drops on, and the teardown leaves the drop nothing.
An attach or exec into an existing session asks the VM host daemon for its box row back first,
and a daemon that did not answer within the 5 s deadline failed the command with exit 7. The
row may well stand, and the in-VM daemon's own row check before it relaunches the box's host
is the gate that fails closed, so a timeout is now a warn line, as a refusal already was. A
control socket that cannot be connected to still exits 7, and so does a create's registration.

The blocking withdraw and resume exchanges are bounded one second past that deadline instead
of the 10 s ask bound, so the abandoned thread no longer holds the runtime's shutdown, and the
process's exit, for up to 5 s more. A session record lookup that fails before the resume now
says so rather than skipping the resume silently.
minimald keeps no per-instance config, and `min` auto-starts the native daemon with no flags,
so an operator's `--egress-deny-all-opt-out` was lost on every restart `min` made and the
host's undeclared own-ip boxes silently went back to deny-all. `minimald run` now also opts out
when MINIMALD_EGRESS_DENY_ALL_OPT_OUT is truthy, through the parse every opt-out reader
shares; the auto-started daemon inherits it. cli-minimald.md and cli-min.md say so.
… deny set

Under the deny-all default the own-address proxy box drops the host-alias connect whatever
the infrastructure deny set does, so the NET-004 leg passed vacuously. The box now declares
--allow-subnets 0.0.0.0/0, as the no-lane boxes do, leaving that set the only thing to drop it.
The dashboard has no egress fields, so every own-ip box it creates on a host that has not
opted out is deny-all, and nothing said so. The create now reads the daemon's opt-out off the
create reply, as `min session activate` does, and the status line carries the same in-force
note, naming the activate flags that declare reach.
…nesses

.github/workflows/ is frozen and CODEOWNER-gated (AGENTS.md). The run
that carried this step cleared the stray gvproxy from the self-hosted
runner; the reap belongs in the harness, tracked separately.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Match the published protocol before selecting refusal handling.

If a box publishes an inside port for UDP only, inside_published still returns true for a TCP SYN to that port. The new branch skips observe_refusable and sends the SYN to observe_delivered instead. The host gate can then record a TCP reply flow for a port with no TCP publication. Include pkt.proto in the publish lookup, and use the same protocol-aware result for both branches.
