feat(sessions): give an absent egress destination list no reach once layers merge - #2153
Conversation
…layers merge An absent allow_subnets or allow_dns_hosts in a declared egress section is no opinion while the box spec's layers merge and grants nothing in its dimension once they have merged. effective_egress resolves each absent destination list to present and empty under the in-force deny-all default on an own-address box, and the NET-077 opt-out keeps the earlier allow-all reading. allow_protocols stays a filter over the granted reach, so allow_subnets = ["0.0.0.0/0"] alone is the written-out allow-all. Spec 18 states NET-074 per list, with NET-077 and the supersession notes corrected; spec 29 records the merge meaning for [network.egress].

…wn-address box An unset --allow-subnets or --allow-dns-hosts grants nothing once the daemon resolves the policy; allow-all is written out as 0.0.0.0/0 and ::/0, and the opt-out keeps the old meaning. --allow-protocols stays a filter.

…out a resolved-empty list The effective-policy reply carries the resolved section, so the round-trip test expects the absent names list back present and empty. admits_nothing now reads allow_subnets and allow_dns_hosts alone, since allow_protocols filters granted reach and grants none, so a protocols-only or denies-only declaration resolved under the deny-all default reports deny-all in min session policy, the DNS gate and the host registry. min session policy prints a present-and-empty list as (none), never blank. Stale 'verbatim' docs in minimald and minvmd are corrected.
…cy reply The GetEffectiveSessionPolicy doc says a declared section answers as the gate resolves it, GetSessionPolicy being the echo; the min reference names what a deny-only or names-only declaration does on an own-address box and the opt-out that restores the earlier meaning; a doc line is re-wrapped.

Reviewed against gominimal/arch (architecture.md, box.toml, example-minimal.toml, specs/networking, Gatehouse §6.3.2).
Verdict. This is the arch-consistent fix: an absent destination list inside a declared section now means what the arch's default-deny posture, box.toml's allow_subnets = [] # empty = DNS allow-list only, the three names-only entries in example-minimal.toml, and the EGW design's "direct-to-IP flows are admitted only by the box's CIDR rules" (§5.3) all say. One item blocks merge as the branch stands, one decision I'd push back on, and the rest is doc precision.
Blocking: the half-open note from #2139 survives the merge
#2139 merged at 02:49 with half_open_name_allowlist_note, its call site in activate_session, its test, and the NET-066 child requirement. This branch is 4 commits behind main, contains none of them, and GitHub reports no conflict, so a merge as-is keeps a note that fires for a names-only own-address box and says direct-to-IP traffic is admitted, which this PR makes false. The PR text already says whichever lands second removes the note; that is now this one. Rebase and delete the helper, the call, the test, and the NET-066 child requirement.
Confirmed against the arch
- Decision 1,
allow_protocolsstays a filter. Yes. box.toml annotates itomitted: both. - Decision 3, no
anykeyword; allow-all written as CIDRs. Yes. The arch has no keyword, Gatehouse §6.3.2 projectsegress_subnetsverbatim, and a written-out/0is a raw allow that fails any ceiling under §6.3 check 8, which is the point: allow-all becomes visible to policy. The §6.3.2 example already shows"egress_subnets": []besideegress_dns, exactly the resolved shape. - Enforcement reads the resolved section. Verified: the launcher resolves via
effective_session_policybeforeSessionGate::for_sessioncompiles rules and builds theDnsGate; the task path and minvmd'sclient_registrationresolve through the same function; the effective reply carries the resolved form while the strict reply keeps the declaration. That split mirrors the arch's expansion-vs-enforcement distinction. - The two reach cases hold. Names-only still works (a pin lifts only the
UndeclaredSubnetdrop), and a written-out0.0.0.0/0with names resolved to[]still resolves any name, because the DNS gate refuses names only for the deny-all shape and passes other queries through unpinned.
Decision 2, host-address scope: I'd push back
A declared names-only section on a host-address box keeps allow-all addresses. That is the exact shape #2134/#2139 were about, surviving on one mode, and the note only ever fired for own-address boxes. The arch's default-deny rule (design principle 7; box.toml [network.egress]: "Egress is default-deny; list what may be reached") is not mode-qualified, UC3 configures per-box rules for every mode, and NET-079's classifier already enforces an empty allow_subnets per box for deny-all, so the mechanism exists. Either resolve absent lists on every declared section and keep only the absent-section default own-address-scoped, or reject names-only on a host-address box as a validation error (NET-140's comment: the classifier decides addresses, never names). Either beats silent allow-all. Inline at effective_egress.
"No opinion while layers merge" has no mechanism
architecture.md ("minimal.toml layout") replaces a table wholesale: an entry's network = { egress = { allow_dns_hosts = [...] } } drops any mode an earlier layer supplied. Spec 29's BOX-064 says the same ("replacing scalars and tables wholesale"). So between file layers an absent list in the winning table is simply absent; there is no other layer it can be left to. The only place an unset value could defer is the flag layer, and this tree has no file layer for egress at all. Suggest "absent in the expanded spec grants nothing" and dropping the "left to another layer" idea from the EgressPolicy doc, the NET-074 and NET-140 comments, and spec 29's design-reasoning sentence, so a future merge implementer doesn't read it as a per-key merge the arch forbids. Inline on lib.rs.
Rollout
The section-level default got an announcement window (NET-076). This changes what existing names-only and deny-only declarations do and ships in force, with the operator opt-out as the only escape. cli-min.md states it plainly, which is good. Just confirm that is intended, since the Announced phase machinery still exists.
Smaller
- NET-074's
verify:names only the no-section test; the per-list test is in the comment. The format allows two verify lines (NET-141 has two). Inline. crates/minvmd/src/box_registry.rs:3356and the test message near:8459still say an absentallow_subnetsdimension "is allow-all, the compiled rules' own meaning". The code is right (that row now only seesNoneunder the opt-out or announced arm) but the wording is stale.::/0is dropped by the IPv4 compile (filter_mapoverIpv4Cidr::parse) and grants nothing in v1 (NET-082). Fine as a forward-compatible spelling, but say so. Inline.- Follow-up, not this PR: the rebinding defense exempts RFC 1918 when
allow_subnetscovers the answer, and a written-out/0covers everything. The EGW design says "explicitly covers". Now that allow-all must be written out, worth a ruling on whether/0counts. - Pre-existing arch divergence noticed on the way: EGW §5.3 says non-matching names are refused at the resolver; the implementation resolves them and drops the connection ("resolution is honest"). Worth an arch issue.

Both bots approved; every completed lane is green (unit, tests, clippy, fmt, kani, native-daemon-e2e, minimald-root-integration, spec-lint); test-kvm still running at the time of writing. The author's Linux nextest run didn't complete (disk full), so the KVM lane is the one that matters.

…ction An absent allow_subnets or allow_dns_hosts in the expanded spec grants nothing on a box of any network mode once the deny-all default is in force; only the absent-section default stays own-address scoped, and the opt-out keeps the earlier allow-all reading. The 'no opinion while layers merge' wording goes, since the architecture replaces a table wholesale between layers. NET-074 names both verify tests. ::/0 is documented as the forward-compatible spelling that grants nothing until an IPv6 path exists. The half-open name-allow-list note, its test and the NET-066 child requirement are removed: this change landed second and the shape it warned about no longer exists. Stale allow-all wording in minvmd's registry and the daemon's opt-out config doc is corrected.

Re-reviewed at b02fd178d (the three commits since 4a1ced7f6 are main merged in). Every item from my review is addressed, and I checked each against the code rather than the replies. Approving; the two points below are non-blocking.
Verified fixed
- Rebase. Main is merged in. The half-open helper, its call, its test and the NET-066 child requirement are gone from every file at the head.
- Host-address scope.
effective_egressresolves absent lists on every declared section once in force and not opted out, whatever the mode; only the absent-section default stays own-address scoped. The phase-by-mode test expects the resolved shape on every mode. - "No opinion" wording. Gone from the
EgressPolicydocs, theeffective_egressdoc, both spec 18 comments and spec 29; the NET-074 comment now records the wholesale table replacement. - NET-074 verify lines,
::/0note, stale minvmd wording, RPC/server docs, TUI(none). All in, each with the test or doc the thread names.
Non-blocking
- Create refuses on the declaration, launch on the resolved section.
crates/minimald/src/sessions.rs:1141handsrefuses_unenforceable_declarationthe declaredconfig.policy.egress, while the launcher (session_host.rs:4090and:4195) reads the policyeffective_session_policyresolved. Outcomes coincide today, since every narrowing declaration is refused at create on a host that decides per box, before and after this change. But the classifier module's own principle is one predicate shared by both paths, and the refusal words now differ: at create a names-only box is refused overallow_dns_hostsalone, at launch (a persisted record relaunched after the step is installed) over the resolved-emptyallow_subnetstoo. Suggest handing the create path the resolved section as well. Inline on the NET-074 comment, which says "reads the resolved shape" and is only true of the launch path until then. - A denies-only or protocols-only host-address declaration now resolves to the deny-all shape at launch. On a host whose classifier table is marked loaded but not in force,
session_host.rs:3947refuses it with wording that calls it "a deny-all box's declaration", which the person never wrote; on a host with no step installed it runs unenforced whilemin session policysaysdeny-allbeside the not-decided-per-box row. Both follow from "a declaration with only deny flags admits nothing", whichcli-min.mdalready states, so this is a wording point for that refusal (say the declaration resolves to deny-all, naming the missing allow list) rather than a semantics problem.
Nits and follow-ups
- The host-address assertion in
absent_destination_lists_grant_nothing_once_mergedcompiles switch-gate rules for a host-address section, which the switch gate never sees; the test comment says so, but the message reads as a classifier claim. Inline. - Opt-out half-open shape. The foundry finding is right that the shape survives behind the operator opt-out with no warning, and your correction is right that a note scoped to that arm is feasible (
created.deny_all_opt_outalready gates the deny-all note). A follow-up issue for the scoped note is the right home;cli-min.md's opt-out section is enough to land this. - The branch carries two merge commits, one with an agent worktree name in its subject; the repo squash-merges, so nothing to do.

"a host that decides per box reads the resolved shape (NET-079) and refuses a narrowing list it cannot enforce" — true of the launch path (session_host.rs:4090/:4195 read the resolved policy) but not of the create path (crates/minimald/src/sessions.rs:1141 hands refuses_unenforceable_declaration the declared config.policy.egress). Outcomes coincide today, since any narrowing declaration is refused at create on a per-box host either way, but the two paths now name different rules in the refusal. Suggest resolving in the create path too, so the comment holds for both; non-blocking.

Nit: this compiles switch-gate rules (EgressRules::from_policy) for a host-address section, which the switch gate never sees — a host-address box is decided by the classifier's binary verdict, and the comment above says so. Something like "the resolved declaration grants no direct-to-address reach" would keep a reader from taking the assertion as a classifier claim.
Root cause
An absent egress allow list had two meanings. The schema (
EgressPolicy) and the gate readNoneas allow-all for that dimension, so a declared section that named onlyallow_dns_hostsreached every address directly, while NET-074 gave an own-address box with noegresssection no reach at all. Spec 29's layer merge (BOX-048) needs a third reading, "no opinion", for a list one layer leaves to another. The spec text stated the deny-all default per section, not per list, and the supersession notes described the superseded 03-spec R2.1 rule as the allow-all for absent fields of the whole section.Fix
crates/sessions/src/lib.rs:EgressPolicydocs now state the meaning:Noneon a destination list (allow_subnets,allow_dns_hosts) grants nothing once the spec is expanded;deny_subnets: Nonedenies nothing; allow-all is written out as0.0.0.0/0and::/0.effective_egressresolves each absent destination list of a declared section to present and empty once the deny-all default is in force and the daemon has not opted out, on a box of any network mode (the architecture's default-deny rule is not mode-qualified, and a host that decides per box reads the resolved shape, NET-079); only the absent-section default stays own-address scoped. Under the NET-077 opt-out or the announced phase the section is carried as declared, so the opt-out keeps allow-all for the section and its lists alike. Wording throughout is "an absent list in the expanded spec grants nothing" (the architecture replaces a table wholesale between layers, so there is no per-key merge for an absent list to defer to).::/0is documented as the forward-compatible spelling: v1 compiles IPv4 rules only, so it grants nothing today (NET-082). Both daemons (minimaldsession launcher, task path and policy RPC;minvmdclient-box registration) resolve through this one function, so the in-VM relay, the DNS gate, the host-side gate rows andmin session policyall see the resolved list.allow_protocolsis left as declared: it filters the reach the two destination lists grant and grants none itself, soallow_subnets = ["0.0.0.0/0"]alone stays the written-out allow-all (the shipped e2e activates such boxes without--allow-protocols, and the relay lifts onlyUndeclaredSubnetdrops for DNS-pinned addresses, so an empty protocol list would also defeat every name grant).EgressPolicy::admits_nothingreads the two destination lists alone (protocols filter granted reach and grant none), so a protocols-only or denies-only declaration resolved under the deny-all default reportsdeny-allinmin session policy, the DNS gate (NET-141 refusal) and the host registry row, instead of a rules section with empty lists.--deny-all-egressstill writes all three lists.min session policyandmin dash's policy pane print a present-and-empty list as(none), never a blank value; the effective-policy RPC reply carries the resolved section (the strict reply still echoes the declaration), andeffective_policy_response_round_tripsexpects that.allow_subnetsorallow_dns_hostslist on an own-address box.[network.egress]design-reasoning paragraph records the merge meaning.docs/reference/cli-min.md: the--allow-subnets,--allow-dns-hostsand--allow-protocolsrows and the paragraph under them now say an unset allow flag grants nothing on an own-address box once the daemon resolves the policy, allow-all is written out as0.0.0.0/0and::/0, the opt-out keeps the old meaning, and--allow-protocolsis a filter.
