Summary

This PR does two things before the first release that ships the host's box-name service:

  1. Renames the service from min-answerer to minzoned.
  2. Makes the release workflow build, sign and upload it for every platform.

Once a release ships the binary under a name, renaming it means an upgrade migration for the root-owned copy and the service units. So both changes land together, before that release.

Why minzoned

  • It matches minimald and minvmd.
  • "Zone" covers what the service holds: box names, and the box addresses behind them (address arbitration is being added to the same service).
  • The name is deliberately narrow. The service runs from a root-owned copy and reads no configuration, so its name should not invite more functions.
  • "Answerer" is a design term. A user doesn't know it when they approve the privileged step, so the advisory now reads: "Install the Minimal box-name service (DNS and addresses for boxes)".

The rename (outside the workflow)

  • Crate and binary:
    • crates/min-answerer becomes crates/minzoned: package, [[bin]] and --help text.
    • scripts/check-answerer-links.sh becomes scripts/check-zoned-links.sh, and its test moves with it.
  • S 8000 ervice units and paths:
    • launchd label dev.gominimal.zone, with plist /Library/LaunchDaemons/dev.gominimal.zone.plist.
    • systemd units minzoned.socket and minzoned.service.
    • Root-owned copies at /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/minzoned and /usr/local/lib/minimal/minzoned.
    • The install markers in minvmd and minimald follow the new unit paths.
  • Signing identity compiled into min:
    • codesign identifier dev.minimal.minzoned.
    • option_env! reads MINIMAL_ZONED_TEAMID and MINIMAL_ZONED_IDENTIFIER.
  • Release artifacts:
    • The artifacts are minzoned-linux-amd64, minzoned-linux-arm64 and minzoned-macos-arm64.
    • The names are updated in the stage-release.sh COMPONENTS table, package-nfpm.sh, packaging/nfpm.yaml, install.sh, install_test.sh and dist-build.sh.
  • just recipes: answerer-build becomes zoned-build, and answerer-link-check becomes zoned-link-check.
  • Kept as internal design vocabulary (none of these appear at install time):
    • module names net::answerer and cmd::answerer;
    • RPC fields answerer_bound and zone_answerer_port;
    • the zone-answerer log component and --zone-answerer-port;
    • the /run/minimal/answerer.sock channel;
    • the debug-only MINIMAL_ANSWERER_* overrides.

The release workflow (.github/workflows/release.yml)

Linux (amd64, arm64):

  • scripts/dist-build.sh builds and link-gates minzoned in its own -p minzoned invocation.
  • The rename step renames it to minzoned-linux-{amd64,arm64}.
  • A new step re-runs scripts/check-zoned-links.sh on the renamed file, so the bytes that upload are the bytes that were checked.
  • Another new step uploads the file.

macOS (arm64):

  • Build: cargo build --release --locked -p minzoned --bin minzoned runs in its own invocation, so the libkrun feature from -p minvmd can't unify into a binary that a root host service runs. The result is then link-gated and renamed to minzoned-macos-arm64.
  • Sign: codesign with the Developer ID, using --options runtime --timestamp, no entitlements, and --identifier dev.minimal.minzoned.
  • Verify: codesign --verify --strict -R against the exact designated requirement min checks: the Developer ID anchor, team 3G47C5HY64, and identifier dev.minimal.minzoned.
  • Re-check and upload: the link gate runs again on the signed bytes, then the file is uploaded.
  • Job env: sets MINIMAL_ZONED_TEAMID=3G47C5HY64 and MINIMAL_ZONED_IDENTIFIER=dev.minimal.minzoned, which the min built in this job compiles in.

Checksums and the manifest need no workflow change, because the COMPONENTS table in stage-release.sh hashes minzoned-* into the components manifest.

docs/internal/release-pipeline.md now describes minzoned as built, signed and uploaded by the workflow.

This PR does not notarize; the stacked follow-up PR adds that. A separate later change makes minzoned required in the two scripts' OPTIONAL_* lists.

Validation

  • Remaining references: git grep 'min-answerer\|min_answerer' finds nothing.
  • Workflow:
    • actionlint .github/workflows/release.yml: clean.
    • zizmor --offline .github/workflows/release.yml: no findings.
    • The YAML parses with yaml.safe_load.
  • Script tests:
    • scripts/check-zoned-links_test.sh: 18 passed. just zoned-link-check: verdict ok.
    • scripts/stage-release_test.sh: 65 passed.
    • scripts/install_test.sh: 511 passed.
  • macOS scope: just fix and just clippy are clean. just test ran 1002 tests and all passed.
  • cross (aarch64 musl):
    • minimald answerer tests: 31 passed.
    • minimal resolver tests: 52 passed. Three sh_parses checks fail in the container on the pre-rename tree too, so the rename didn't cause them.
  • Prose: just lint-prose docs/internal/release-pipeline.md: clean.
  • Not run: the workflow itself. The next release run proves the signing and upload steps.

Review

This PR edits a frozen, CODEOWNER-gated workflow. A code owner reviews and merges it. It must merge before the first release that ships minzoned.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • The box-name service is now named minzoned across installation and service management on supported platforms; its box DNS names and address functionality remain unchanged.
    • Linux amd64, Linux arm64, and macOS arm64 release builds now include minzoned when the artifact is available. macOS release binaries are signed and notarized, and releases are blocked if notarization is not accepted.
    • Release documentation and setup guidance now use the minzoned name.

The build, staging, packaging and install scripts already handle
min-answerer (#1971), but the release workflow never built, signed or
uploaded it, so stage-release.sh and package-nfpm.sh skipped it with a
warning.

Linux: rename the min-answerer artifacts dist-build.sh already builds,
re-run scripts/check-answerer-links.sh on the renamed files and upload
them as min-answerer-linux-{amd64,arm64}.

macOS: build min-answerer in its own -p min-answerer invocation,
link-gate it, rename it, Developer-ID sign it (hardened runtime,
timestamp, no entitlements, identifier dev.minimal.min-answerer),
verify it against the designated requirement min checks, re-run the
link gate on the signed bytes and upload it as min-answerer-macos-arm64.

Pass MINIMAL_ANSWERER_TEAMID and MINIMAL_ANSWERER_IDENTIFIER as job
env to the macOS build so the min it builds carries that identity.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The answerer binary and service identifiers are renamed to minzoned. Build, link-check, release, staging, packaging, installation, and end-to-end checks now use the new name. Release jobs upload Linux artifacts and sign, verify, re-check, notarize, and upload the macOS arm64 artifact.

minzoned Rename and Release Integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Binary and service identifiers
Cargo.toml, crates/minzoned/*, crates/minimal/src/resolver.rs, crates/minimald/*, crates/minvmd/*, styles/config/vocabularies/Minimal/accept.txt
The workspace and binary use minzoned. Platform service identifiers, installation paths, marker paths, advisory text, and related tests use the renamed service.
Build and release validation
.github/workflows/release.yml, justfile, scripts/check-zoned-links*, scripts/dist-build.sh, crates/minimal/src/resolver.rs
Build recipes and release jobs build and link-check minzoned. The macOS release job signs and verifies the artifact, checks its links again, requires notarization acceptance, and uploads it.
Staging, packaging, and installation
packaging/nfpm.yaml, scripts/stage-release*, scripts/package-nfpm.sh, scripts/install*, docs/internal/release-pipeline.md
Release and installer definitions use minzoned and its renamed artifact paths. Staging and packaging continue to treat a missing artifact as optional.
Session and macOS service checks
scripts/session-e2e.sh, scripts/zoned-e2e-publisher.py, scripts/zoned-macos-e2e.sh, .github/workflows/ci-macos.yml, crates/minimal/src/cli.rs, crates/minimal/src/cmd/mod.rs
Session checks use the renamed service. A debug-only command exposes its install command, and a privileged macOS end-to-end job checks installation, DNS answers, publisher behavior, restart, and teardown.

The change adds a macOS CI job and edits release workflows that repository rules mark as frozen, so it needs explicit CODEOWNER approval or the logic should move into scripts and the justfile. An open question remains about upgrading from an earlier service identity, and the signing and notarization steps have not been run. Resolve these before merging.

… the workflow

The release workflow now builds, link-gates, signs and uploads min-answerer,
so the pipeline doc no longer calls it a pending code-owner patch or a gap.
The host box-zone service binary becomes minzoned, matching minimald
and minvmd. It holds the box zone: the box names and the addresses
behind them, so a dns name would be too narrow once address
arbitration lands. The name stays narrow on purpose: a privileged,
config-less service should not invite more functions.

- crate, package and binary: crates/minzoned, minzoned
- launchd label dev.gominimal.zone, systemd units minzoned.socket and
  minzoned.service
- root-owned copies /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/minzoned and
  /usr/local/lib/minimal/minzoned
- codesign identifier dev.minimal.minzoned; compile-time env
  MINIMAL_ZONED_TEAMID and MINIMAL_ZONED_IDENTIFIER
- release artifacts minzoned-{linux-amd64,linux-arm64,macos-arm64}
- scripts/check-zoned-links.sh (and its test), just zoned-build and
  zoned-link-check
- advisory lead-in: install the Minimal box-name service (DNS and
  addresses for boxes)
Follows the rename of min-answerer to minzoned: the artifact names, the link
check script, the cargo package and binary, the signing identifier
dev.minimal.minzoned and the MINIMAL_ZONED_* build env that min compiles in.

Approved: no findings at 2c5b597f13bb.

Nothing to do.

Clobber: none: git log 5ec89e9..HEAD shows the rename, ship, notarize, and e2e commits are new relative to base; nothing reverts a recent fix.

The advisory command now installs minzoned, so the e2e's answerer-step
matches look for minzoned instead of the old zone-answerer label. The
install test's root-owned-path guard names the new program and plist
paths. Daemon log greps keep the zone-answerer component name.

After signing, build-release-macos-arm64 now submits min, minvmd and
min-answerer to the Apple notary service with
`xcrun notarytool submit --wait`, each in a ditto zip used only for the
submission. The release fails unless every result is Accepted, and the
step prints the notary log of a rejected submission.

The release ships bare Mach-O files, which stapler cannot staple, so
Gatekeeper looks the ticket up online.

Credentials come from a notarytool keychain profile in the signing
keychain, named by the MACOS_NOTARY_PROFILE repository variable. The
job timeout rises from 45 to 60 minutes to cover the notary waits.
Document the step and its runner prerequisites in release-pipeline.md.

* test(minzoned): prove the macOS service install on a hosted runner

The self-hosted Mac fleet runs PR code without sudo, so the minzoned
LaunchDaemon path had no CI proof. A new zoned job on macos-latest runs
the privileged install command min prints, then checks custody, the
system resolver, the channel (a script stands in for the node), the uid
gate, a restart, a re-run and a clean teardown.

A hidden debug-only verb, min debug-answerer-command, prints the command
without a session.

* test(minzoned): wait for the range job to apply every alias
