fix(mip): name --no-fetch when remote cache setup fails - #2066
norrietaylor merged 3 commits into
Conversation
Patched-build paths construct the remote cache up front via remote_cache(false, false). When that setup fails, the error is surfaced bare, so users are not told they can turn the fetch off. Wrap the remote-cache setup error at all three call sites (mip cmd_pkg_patched_build, mctx EnvChannel::run_patched_pkg, minimald SessionChannel::run_patched_pkg) to name the setup failure and point at --no-fetch as the offline switch. remote-cache setup error in the `remote_cache` call within the session context,
leaving the error message to report the setup failure and its cause. The
parallel `mctx` handler needs a separate edit.

Only mip has a --no-fetch flag. The daemon's context never sets no_fetch,
and the in-sandbox min helper rejects any flag, so the minimald and mctx
patched-pkg paths no longer promise a switch their user cannot reach.
All three sites now go through mctx's From<rcache::Error>, which renders
rcache's Config variant cleanly instead of its Debug form, and wrap the
cause with anyhow context rendered with {:#} so it stays visible.

One helper, remote_cache_setup_error, builds the error at all three
callers; unit tests pin the {:#} rendering, the clean Config cause, and
the hinted variant mip uses.

Patched-build paths construct the remote cache up front via
remote_cache(false, false)(introduced in #2054). When that setup fails, the error is surfaced bare, so users are never told they can switch off the fetch. This change routes the remote-cache setup error at all three call sites through one helper,
mctx::remote_cache_setup_error, so the message readsfailed to set up the remote artifact cache: <cause>with the cause rendered cleanly (not the Debug form ofrcache::Error). Unit tests inmctxpin the rendering. The offline hint is named only where the user can act on it:
mip pkg patched-build:--no-fetchis a globalmipflag, so the message adds(pass --no-fetch to build without it).minimald::SessionChannel::run_patched_pkgandmctx::EnvChannel::run_patched_pkg(min package patched-buildinside a box): no hint. The daemon context never setsno_fetch, and the in-boxminhelper takes no flags, so naming--no-fetchthere would be wrong. The pre-existing
remote_storage()errors are left untouched; the defect is specifically the up-front remote-cache setup from #2054. Resolves gominimal/inbox#996.Verification
