Summary

Dependabot covers cargo and workflow actions only. Every other pin this repo builds or ships had no lag signal: the guest kernel, Alpine rootfs, and libkrun/libkrunfw recipes at the pkgs locked_commit, the vendored libkrun, gvproxy, and nfpm locks, the Rust toolchain, and tool versions pinned inside config files.

  • scripts/deps-freshness.sh holds the pin inventory as a declarative table. Each row names where the pin lives and which upstream answers "latest" (GitHub releases, kernel.org for the pinned series, Alpine latest-stable, pkgs main). It prints pinned, latest, and status per pin. Lag never fails, and an unreachable upstream prints unknown.
  • The same script checks pins written down twice. The vendored libkrun must equal the pkgs recipe at locked_commit. KANI_VERSION in ci-kani.yml must equal the justfile's install hint. zizmor and actionlint must match between ci.yml and nightly-tests.yml. A mismatch or an unresolvable value exits 1.
  • just deps-freshness [--check] [--offline] runs it.
  • scripts/deps-freshness_test.sh stubs gh and curl over a fixture tree and covers the report, unreachable upstreams, unreadable pins, each skew, and --offline. Its last case runs the offline checks against the real tree, so the convention-discovered shell-harness gate fails a PR that bumps a duplicated pin in one place only.

No .github/workflows/ change.

Test plan

  • just test-shell: all harnesses pass, including the new one, under bash 5 and macOS /bin/bash 3.2.
  • just lint-shell: clean.
  • Mutation check: dropping the mismatch exit makes four harness cases fail.
  • just deps-freshness against live upstreams produces the table above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added dependency freshness reporting for manually pinned non-Rust dependencies, with status for pins that are current, behind, ahead, or unknown.
    • Added checks for inconsistent pins and missing vendored lock-file coverage, including an offline mode for checks that do not require remote data.

pkgs locked_commit bump

The second commit moves locked_commit to pkgs main (c5839783). The cache map carries every VM artifact for both arches.

  • Guest kernel 6.12.105 to 6.12.111. libkrunfw 5.5.0 to 5.6.1.
  • The rootfs gains nftables, and the guest kernel config gains NFT_SOCKET. These are what the guest classifier's socket cgroupv2 rules need.
  • libkrun stays 1.19.4, so it still matches the vendored lock.
  • just kernel-review 6.12.105 6.12.111 flags two commits, in virtio_input and the virtio-pci INTx path. The guest uses virtio-mmio and has no input device.
  • The minvmd egress allowlist integration test keeps its own pkgs pin as a fixture and is unchanged.

Local just e2e on macOS passed every proof up to the hostname-proxy proof, including own-IP egress enforcement (NET-062 drop). The hostname-proxy proof refused to run because an installed daemon on the same host held 127.0.0.1:7654. The macOS and KVM lanes run the full e2e on this PR.

Drift hardening

The checks now fail loudly when the inventory drifts, instead of the report printing unknown and exiting 0.

  • --check fails when a pin no longer resolves to exactly one value. With --offline this covers every pin read from this tree, and the harness runs it against the real tree, so a pin moved or reshaped in an unrelated PR fails the shell-harness gate.
  • --check fails when a vendor/*/*.lock file has no inventory row.
  • File patterns must start with ^ and spell out the line's shape, so a comment mentioning a tool is not read as its pin. A file with two matching lines of different values reports the pin as ambiguous.
  • The kernel row reads kernel.org's end-of-life flag. A series kernel.org no longer lists is reported as EOL, not as an unreachable upstream.

Each behavior has a harness case, and a mutation of each one fails the harness. The harness passes under macOS bash 3.2 with BSD tools and under GNU tools in Debian.

Dependabot covers cargo and workflow actions only. The guest kernel,
Alpine rootfs, libkrun/libkrunfw (pkgs recipes at locked_commit), the
vendored libkrun, gvproxy and nfpm locks, the Rust toolchain, and the
tool versions pinned in config files had no lag signal.

scripts/deps-freshness.sh holds the pin inventory as a declarative table
(where each pin lives, which upstream answers "latest") and prints
pinned / latest / status for each. It also checks the pins written down
twice: the vendored libkrun against the pkgs recipe at locked_commit,
KANI_VERSION between ci-kani.yml and the justfile, and zizmor and
actionlint between ci.yml and nightly-tests.yml. Lag never fails; a
mismatched or unresolvable duplicate does.

The harness stubs gh and curl over a fixture tree and runs the offline
checks against the real tree, so the shell-harness gate catches a
duplicated pin bumped in one place only.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a just task and shell script to report freshness for pinned non-Rust dependencies. The script resolves pins, checks upstreams, and validates duplicated pins and vendor-lock coverage. A shell test harness covers reporting, check, and offline modes.

Changes: Dependency Freshness

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pin inventory and command entry
scripts/deps-freshness.sh, justfile
The script documents and inventories dependency pins, defines consistency checks, and parses command options. The deps-freshness task forwards arguments to the script.
Pin resolution and freshness reporting
scripts/deps-freshness.sh, scripts/deps-freshness_test.sh
The script resolves pins and reports upstream versions, commit lag, and freshness states. Tests cover pin resolution, upstream responses, and report output.
Consistency checks and offline mode
scripts/deps-freshness.sh, scripts/deps-freshness_test.sh
The script checks duplicated pins and vendor-lock coverage. Offline mode skips checks that require network data. Tests cover check failures, option validation, offline behavior, and the real repository tree.

The new freshness command may report from one of conflicting pins instead of flagging the ambiguity. This is a limited tooling risk, not an established production failure.

Approved: no findings at 48bfc9261419.

Nothing to do.

Clobber: none: git log on .minimal/minimal.toml shows the bump is a fresh commit (429fd34), not a revert.

Comment thread scripts/deps-freshness.sh Resolved
Moves the guest kernel 6.12.105 -> 6.12.111 and libkrunfw 5.5.0 ->
5.6.1, adds nftables to the microvm rootfs and NFT_SOCKET to the guest
kernel config (what the guest classifier's `socket cgroupv2` rules
need). libkrun stays 1.19.4, matching the vendored lock, so the
deps-freshness consistency check holds.

The kernel-review range flags two commits, in virtio_input and the
virtio-pci INTx path; the guest has neither (virtio-mmio, no input).

Comment thread scripts/deps-freshness.sh Resolved
A stalled upstream could hang the report before the consistency checks
ran. Both curl calls now carry --max-time 30, so a stall reads as
unknown like any other unreachable upstream. The harness's curl stub
rejects an unbounded call.
…freshness

Both rows use a ^-led pattern inside pinned()'s .*-wrapped sed -E
expression. ERE treats ^ as an anchor anywhere, so they resolve on BSD,
GNU and busybox sed alike, but no case asserted them.

Verdict APPROVE — No findings.

A moved, reshaped or removed pin used to print "unknown" and exit 0,
a new vendor lock file went unnoticed, a comment mentioning a tool
could be read as its pin, and an EOL kernel series looked like a
network error.

- --check fails when a PINS row no longer resolves to exactly one
value; --offline covers the rows read from this tree, so the shell
harness gate catches a pin moved or reshaped in an unrelated PR.
- --check fails when a vendor/*/*.lock file has no PINS row.
- re patterns must start with ^ and spell out the line's shape, and a
source matching two distinct values is reported as ambiguous.
- The kernel row reads kernel.org's iseol flag and reports a series
kernel.org no longer lists as EOL rather than unreachable.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject conflicting locked_commit values.

If .minimal/minimal.toml contains two different locked_commit lines, locked_commit() selects the first with head -1. The new --check --offline pin check then reports that every applicable pin resolves, although the file contains an ambiguous pin. Pass all matched commit values through one() instead of selecting the first, and add a conflicting-commit fixture.

Re-checked d4e0d97..48bfc92: the delta is only the main merge, the scripts and justfile recipe are unchanged, nothing runs mip update, and the locked_commit bump now resolves to main's newer pin so the PR no longer changes it (the title's "bump the pkgs locked_commit" is stale for the squash message).

#2214 deleted vendor/nfpm when the release dropped distro packages, and the
merge-back brought that into main. #1875 then merged a pin table that still
listed vendor/nfpm/nfpm.lock, so the real-tree check in the deps-freshness
harness fails with "pin unreadable" and reds ci-linux-native on main.

Drop the nfpm row and its fixture lines.
