The env_vars.X = { inherit = true } fix is unit-tested on the client
side only; nothing proves the value crosses the VM boundary into a
running task. Add three session-e2e cases:

  • inherited var reaches the task's printenv inside the session
  • unset inherited var is refused client-side, naming the var
  • ungranted var is refused at the policy gate with the [vars] allow
    snippet

Verification

  • cargo fmt --all --check passes (no Rust changes).
  • live-session: native-daemon-e2e — scripts/session-e2e.sh runs
    on the native-daemon lane.
  • live-session: test-kvm — same script on the KVM lane.
  • live-session: macos e2e — same script on the macOS lane.
  • All three lanes match scripts/** in their on patterns.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added end-to-end checks confirming that approved inherited environment variables reach tasks, while unset or unapproved variables are rejected with an error identifying the variable and, where applicable, the relevant allow-list entry.
    • Updated the native-daemon test fixture with notes about its port configuration and enabled egress default. These documentation-only changes do not affect runtime behavior.

Round 2 of 10 is on this pull request.

branch inbox-patch/test/e2e-env-vars-inherit-boundary-9c578368c9b9a1ce

Updated 2026-09-29T21:51:14.365Z.

The CLI/path-helpers test suite (8c8573a) predates the hostname proxy
port, zone answerer port and egress opt-out fields on ListenArgs (T27,
fecbfd4, added two of them; T19, 25436fe, the third), so its fixed
initializer no longer compiles -- the workspace test build has been red
since. Name the CLI defaults there (no pinned ports, shipped egress
default).
shellcheck SC2030/SC2031 flagged the env-vars-inherit proof's
subshell-local `export E2E_INHERIT_MARKER` inside `$(...)` and
`(...)` (SC2031: modification in subshell not inherited; SC2030:
modification local to the subshell). Move the export/unset into the
invoking shell, where the proof belongs anyway: the client resolves
inherited task vars against the shell that invoked it, so exporting
in the run's subshell would reach `min` only by accident.

Also fixes the gate this trips: crates/common's convention-discovered
shell_lint test runs scripts/lint-shell.sh --strict over every
scripts/*.sh, so the two findings turned the tests job red (nextest
exit 100) on this branch since 2f3203a.

Round 1 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as 59cf89353a1e.

No test: line was run.

A person reading the PR's CI sees the Linux-native lane green again: the workspace test suite compiles and passes (the minimald test ListenArgs initializer now sets hostname_proxy_port, zone_answerer_port, egress_deny_all_opt_out), and the PR's three env-vars-inherit proofs remain in scripts/session-e2e.sh with the export/unset in the invoking shell, so the shellcheck gate (crates/common's shell_lint test) passes. Client-side, the two refusal cases were verified against a clean seed: unset inherited var exits 1 naming the var, ungranted var exits 1 carrying the [vars] allow snippet.

Notes from the agent: Root causes of the failed checks (ci-linux-native-success + tests): (1) since 4359c6b on main (Sep 28), commits T27 fecbfd4 and T19 25436fe added hostname_proxy_port/zone_answerer_port/egress_deny_all_opt_out to ListenArgs, breaking the test initializer in crates/minimald/src/main.rs (E0063, nextest exit 101 for tests + minimald-root-integration); fixed in 7cbc1d5 with the CLI's own defaults. (2) The branch's own Sep-22 tests red (exit 100) was shellcheck SC2030/SC2031 on the PR's subshell-local export of E2E_INHERIT_MARKER; fixed in 59cf893 by moving export/unset into the invoking shell, which is also truer to the proof (the client resolves inherited vars against the shell that invoked min). Remaining local failure: package_version_is_the_declared_next_release — workspace version 0.6.0 is not strictly greater than tag v0.6.0 while feat commits since require 0.7.0; CI checkouts are tagless so the test self-skips and main was green Sep 25–28 in the same state (e.g. run 36188191589); fixing it means bumping package.version, a release action outside this PR's scope. Local box limits: hakoniwa mount remount is EPERM here, so sandboxed task execs (e2e-fail, e2e-envprint printenv) exit 125 and proof_task_run cannot complete locally; the lane passed on CI at the branch head, and the client-side assertions of cases 2 and 3 were verified manually with the s…[truncated]

This PR has merge conflicts with its base branch (main) that need human resolution.

Conflicted files:

  • crates/minimald/src/main.rs

Reason it's not trivial: conflict touches Rust source (*.rs), which is outside the trivial-conflict criteria.

Recommended action: rebase or merge manually, then remove the needs-human label so this chore re-evaluates.

Round 2 of 10 on a /revise note, pushed as fff8c67bd599.

Resolved conflicts in: crates/minimald/src/main.rs

No test: line was run.

The conflict is resolved: merge commit 7abca3e brings origin/main onto the branch, resolving crates/minimald/src/main.rs in favor of the branch's test-initializer comment, and the failing tests job is green again — workspace suite (2336 tests), doctests, fmt and the locked-lock check all pass. The two client-side halves of the new env_vars e2e (unset var refused naming the var; ungranted var refused with the [vars] allow snippet) were verified against the real min binary with the e2e's exact greps; the in-session boundary crossing runs on CI's three lanes, all of which trigger on scripts/**.

Notes from the agent: Directive: 'resolve conflicts' + failed checks tests / ci-linux-native-success. The conflict (crates/minimald/src/main.rs) was the branch's two comment lines inside test_cli's ListenArgs initializer; kept HEAD's version — both sides already construct identical fields. Root cause of the failed tests job: the workspace test build went red when origin/main added hostname_proxy_port/zone_answerer_port/egress_deny_all_opt_out to ListenArgs (8c8573a's fixed initializer predates them); 7cbc1d5 fixed it on the branch and the merge completes the round — all green after the merge, verified locally. My only hand edit is the conflict resolution in main.rs; the merge commit's other 12 files (Cargo.lock, Cargo.toml, README.md, minimald session/session_host/session tests, minvmd run/vmm_child, mip cmd_run, stdlib Cargo.toml/attr_classes.ncl, linux-host-setup.md, loadouts.md) come verbatim from origin/main and were CI-green there. Lane filters checked read-only: ci-linux-native.yml, ci-linux-kvm.yml and ci-macos.yml all match scripts/**, so the env_vars e2e runs on every lane. Cannot run on this box (environmental, unchanged by the PR): session sandbox forking (EPERM inside the box rootfs's recursive remount — the script's own 'host that is itself a sandbox' case; plain userns probes here succeed, so it is this host's confinement), KVM (no /dev/kvm), ma…[truncated]
