ssh's exec request carries one string (RFC 4254 §5.2), and the daemon decided what it meant by looking at it: anything starting with min was one of its own commands, everything else was a shell command for the session. That conflated three intents in one untagged string, and both failure modes were real.

An argv could not be sent. ssh joins its trailing arguments with single spaces and the far side reshells the result, so
min session exec s sh -c 'echo A B C' arrived as sh -c echo A B C and A became sh's $0 — it never printed. Quoting the words on the client fixed the splitting but broke the sniffing, because both read the same bytes.

A session command was stolen. min --version names the session's own min, but the daemon claimed the prefix and refused it, so that binary was simply unreachable through exec.

Requests are now tagged, in a vocabulary both sides share (minimald-rpc::exec): min://shell, min://argv, min://task/run, min://package/build and min://check. Argv words travel as JSON — NUL, the one delimiter that could never collide with the payload, is exactly the one execve cannot carry — and are exec'd with no shell in between. Anything untagged belongs to the session, which is the rule that makes the hijack impossible.

Adds min session run <session> <task>, which names the task form explicitly and restores running a declared task against a session you already have. A task may now share a name with a daemon subcommand or a program on PATH.

BREAKING CHANGE: the exec-channel wire contract changed, so a client and daemon must be built together — the existing version gate already refuses a skewed pair. min session exec <s> 'min check' and min session exec <s> min run <task> no longer route to the daemon; they run in the session. The daemon forms are reached by min session run and min task run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added min session run to execute named tasks in existing sessions.
    • Enhanced min session exec with shell commands and literal argument execution.
    • Improved handling of commands containing spaces and special characters.
    • Commands resembling daemon commands now run correctly within sessions.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved task output and exit-code reporting.
    • Invalid execution requests now provide clear errors and exit status.
  • Documentation

    • Updated CLI, session, task, and architecture documentation for new commands and execution behavior.

ssh's exec request carries one string (RFC 4254 §5.2), and the daemon
decided what it meant by looking at it: anything starting with `min `
was one of its own commands, everything else was a shell command for
the session. That conflated three intents in one untagged string, and
both failure modes were real.

An argv could not be sent. ssh joins its trailing arguments with single
spaces and the far side reshells the result, so
`min session exec s sh -c 'echo A B C'` arrived as `sh -c echo A B C`
and `A` became sh's $0 — it never printed. Quoting the words on the
client fixed the splitting but broke the sniffing, because both read
the same bytes.

A session command was stolen. `min --version` names the session's own
`min`, but the daemon claimed the prefix and refused it, so that binary
was simply unreachable through exec.

Requests are now tagged, in a vocabulary both sides share
(`minimald-rpc::exec`): min://shell, min://argv, min://task/run,
min://package/build and min://check. Argv words travel as JSON — NUL,
the one delimiter that could never collide with the payload, is exactly
the one execve cannot carry — and are exec'd with no shell in between.
Anything untagged belongs to the session, which is the rule that makes
the hijack impossible.

Adds `min session run <session> <task>`, which names the task form
explicitly and restores running a declared task against a session you
already have. A task may now share a name with a daemon subcommand or a
program on PATH.

BREAKING CHANGE: the exec-channel wire contract changed, so a client and
daemon must be built together — the existing version gate already
refuses a skewed pair. `min session exec <s> 'min check'` and
`min session exec <s> min run <task>` no longer route to the daemon;
they run in the session. The daemon forms are reached by
`min session run` and `min task run`.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a typed exec protocol for shell, argv, task, build, and check requests. Clients encode requests as one SSH argument. The daemon parses and routes them. The CLI adds session run for task execution in existing sessions.

crates/minimald-rpc/src/exec.rs, crates/minimald-rpc/src/lib.rs, crates/minimald-rpc/Cargo.toml, docs/architecture.md, crates/minimal-client/src/lib.rs, AGENTS.md
The RPC crate exposes ExecRequest and ExecParseError. It encodes and parses tagged shell, argv, task, build, and check requests.
Daemon request dispatch
crates/minimald/src/exec.rs
The daemon routes parsed shell and argv requests to sessions. It dispatches task, build, and check requests. It reports malformed requests on stderr with status 1.

Session run command and output handling
crates/minimal/src/lib.rs, crates/minimal/src/main.rs, docs/reference/cli-min.md, docs/concepts/sessions.md, docs/guide/tasks.md, scripts/session-e2e.sh
The CLI adds session run <session> <task>. It sends TaskRun, relays output and exit status, and classifies task output as data-contract output.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to dc420

The task guide still presents a rejected legacy command as an alias, which may mislead users into invoking a command that no longer works; the PR is otherwise mergeable with explicit owner follow-up to correct the documentation.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

`min session exec` had no reference section at all, and its two readings
— one argument is a shell command, several are an argv — are now a
contract worth stating rather than a heuristic to discover. Adds that
section and one for `min session run`, and names both in the list of
arguments that complete as a session.

Also corrects two crate-map lines: `minimald-rpc` now carries the exec
channel's request vocabulary alongside the oneshot RPC contract, and
exec is a streaming channel rather than one of the oneshot RPCs it was
listed among.

Tasks define commands that run in a [sandbox](../concepts/sandboxing.md) with exactly your declared dependencies. Every developer on your team runs the same task in the same environment.

A task is a **one-shot** command that runs in its own fresh sandbox and exits, driven by the `mip` CLI (Linux-only; inside a session, `min task run <name>` runs the same tasks on any platform; the bare `min run <name>` is a legacy alias). That makes it different from an interactive [dev session](./dev-shell.md), which is a long-lived environment you attach to with `min`. Reach for a task to run builds, tests, linters, and deploys; reach for a session for interactive development.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Correct the min run description.

min run <name> is not a legacy alias. The hidden Command::Run path rejects it and names the canonical command. Users who follow this text receive an error.

minimal-review — advisory review

Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; policy.actions.approve is off.

Scope: Matches its stated intent tightly — replaces exec-channel string-sniffing with a tagged min:// vocabulary (minimald-rpc::exec), adds min session run, and updates the client, daemon, docs and e2e script together. No unrelated drive-by changes.

Clobber: No sign this reverts or overwrites other recent work on the touched files.

Correctness: The core mechanism checks out — ExecRequest::encode/parse round-trip for all five forms, SessionProgram::argv() is safe given Argv is guaranteed non-empty by parse, command_in_session's generic AsRef<OsStr> bounds accept the &String/Vec<String> args fine, and MINIMAL_SESSION_ID still gets threaded through attach_command for the new session run path. One real gap: crates/minvmd/tests/minimald_session_integration.rs:179 sends the raw untagged string "min run echo_ok" directly over the exec channel, bypassing the new encoding this PR introduces. Under the new 'anything untagged belongs to the session' rule that string is now ExecRequest::Shell("min run echo_ok"), run as a shell command in a guest that has no min binary — see the finding for why this looks like a genuine CI break, not just a theoretical one. It's an isolated instance; I found no other direct/raw usage of the old sniffed forms.

Separately, and not flagged as a line-anchored finding because the diff never touches these lines: the doc comment directly above handle_exec (crates/minimald/src/exec.rs, just above line 853) still describes the accepted forms as bare min task run <task> / min run <task> / min package build <args> / min check <args> — stale now that those are min://task/run, min://package/build, min://check. Worth a follow-up touch since it's right next to the code this PR rewrote.

Could not check without a build: that the crate actually compiles (e.g. the unreachable!() arm in the Shell/Argv dispatch, and the re-match on request after the outer match's Shell(_) | Argv(_) arm) — reasoned through by hand from Rust's move semantics rather than verified with cargo check, per the no-build constraint.

What ran

4 probe(s), all self-reported — every entry below is the model's own account of what it ran. None of it is host-attested, so none of it can gate a blocking verdict.

Verification log

1. Read crates/minimald/src/exec.rs handle_exec dispatch (new ExecRequest::parse path) — self-reported

Confirmed the new rule: any exec-channel string that does not start with min:// is now ExecRequest::Shell and is handed to the session's shell unconditionally. There is no fallback that still recognizes the old bare min run <task> / min task run <task> / min check / min package build forms.

2. rg for raw "min run"/"min task"/"min check"/"min package" strings used as literal exec-channel payloads outside minimal-client's new ExecRequest encoding — self-reported

Found crates/minvmd/tests/minimald_session_integration.rs:179, which builds the SSH exec payload by hand (russh client, not going through minimal-client::attach::remote_command or minimald_rpc::exec::ExecRequest) and sends the literal string "min run echo_ok". Everywhere else this shape appears is either the migrated call sites in this diff or the new crate's own tests exercising the 'untagged is always the session's' behavior on purpose.

3. Read crates/minvmd/tests/minimald_session_integration.rs:160-194 (minimald_exec_over_bridge) — self-reported

The test seeds a task-only minimal.toml ([tasks.echo_ok]) into the session and asserts stdout equals the task's sentinel with exit 0, relying on the daemon itself running the declared task. The comment explicitly says the guest has 'nothing baked into the rootfs beyond minimald itself' — i.e. no min binary inside the session to shell out to.

4. Read justfile test-vm recipes (macOS and Linux) to see whether this ignored test actually executes in CI — self-reported

Both test-vm recipes export MINVMD_E2E=1 and run cargo nextest ... --run-ignored all -E 'binary(/_integration$/) ...', which matches minimald_session_integration's binary name and un-ignores minimald_exec_over_bridge. Per AGENTS.md's CI lane map, just test-vm backs the required ci-linux-kvm lane (hosted) and the ci-macos VM harnesses, so this is exercised on ordinary PR CI, not just an opt-in local check.

HIGH · correctness · confidence 0.72 · in minimald_session_integration::minimald_exec_over_bridge

This is the behavioral edge of the fix: any exec-channel string without a min:// prefix is now always ExecRequest::Shell and runs in the session's shell — there is no longer a fallback that recognizes the old bare min run <task> form. crates/minvmd/tests/minimald_session_integration.rs:179 (not touched by this diff) still sends that literal string, "min run echo_ok", straight over the exec channel via a hand-rolled russh client rather than through minimal-client's new remote_command/ExecRequest encoding. Under the new rule that string becomes a session shell command, and the test's guest has 'nothing baked into the rootfs beyond minimald itself' (its own comment), so there is no min binary to run it — the task the test expects the daemon to service (echo_ok) never runs, and the stdout/exit assertions should fail. This test runs on ordinary PR CI: just test-vm sets MINVMD_E2E=1 and un-ignores it via --run-ignored all -E 'binary(/_integration$/)' on both the macOS and Linux recipes, which back the required ci-macos and ci-linux-kvm lanes per AGENTS.md's CI lane map. This looks like a single missed caller, not a repeated pattern — no other direct/raw use of the old sniffed forms turned up elsewhere in the tree.

What the reviewer checked

crates/minvmd/tests/minimald_session_integration.rs:179: result = run_session_exec(&guest.sock_path, Some(&mfile), "min run echo_ok").await; — sent verbatim over the exec channel; after this PR, ExecRequest::parse("min run echo_ok") returns Shell("min run echo_ok") because it has no min:// prefix.

twitchyliquid64 and others added 2 commits August 27, 2026 19:15
The VM-backed exec test still asked for `min run echo_ok`, the untagged
spelling the daemon used to recognise by prefix. Untagged commands now
belong to the session, so the guest tried to run it as a shell command.
The initramfs packs only the minimald binary as `/init`
(scripts/build-initramfs.sh), so there is no `/usr/bin/bash` to run it
and no `min` to be run: the spawn failed, which the bridge reports as
exit 1, and the test saw empty stdout instead of the sentinel.

Names the task as a `min://task/run` request, the same form
`min session run` and `min task run` send — serviced by the daemon
itself, which is why it needs nothing in the guest rootfs. The guest
daemon is cross-built from this tree by the KVM lane
(.github/workflows/ci-linux-kvm.yml builds the initramfs with no
MINIMALD_BIN), so guest and host share the vocabulary.

about a command's text routes it.

Also compares the bridge exec test's stdout exactly rather than trimmed.
The in-process twin (`exec_runs_echo_task`) already asserts the same
bytes, and a trimming compare would swallow anything that leaked in
alongside the task's output — including the leading blank line the
argv-through-a-shell bug produced.

Resolves against #1308, which replaced the daemon's string-sniffing exec
dispatch with the tagged `minimald_rpc::exec::ExecRequest` vocabulary.

- `minimald/src/exec.rs`: the `min task run` / `min package build` arms this
branch had edited no longer exist as string prefixes. The resolved task
env now hangs off `ExecRequest::TaskRun`, read after the empty-name guard
and before the ack, so `TaskExec.env` is fed exactly as before.
- `minimal/src/task.rs`: the exec command is the encoded `TaskRun` request
rather than a formatted `min task run <task>` string; `task_env` rides
alongside it as the third argument.
- `minimal-client/src/lib.rs`: doc comment takes main's wording for the
routing contract and keeps this branch's `task_env` paragraph, now
  pointing at `ExecRequest::TaskRun`.
- `minimald-rpc/src/lib.rs`: both modules, `exec` and `taskenv`.

Note: `min session run`, added by #1308, is a second client-side entry into
`min://task/run` and does not carry a resolved env — it goes through
`session_via_ssh`, not `open_session_exec_channel`. An `inherit` var run
that way still resolves daemon-side, the same remaining gap as the in-box
`min run <task>`.
