docs(specs): add the box networking spec (NET) - #1380
Conversation
Spec 12 binds the box host's side of the networking design from the epic gominimal/inbox#646: names through the hostname proxy and native resolution, network posture on the CLI, bounded egress enforced outside the VM, gateway-attached and enrolled-host obligations, mesh join, and the reverse-proxy retirement. 119 EARS requirements at T0 with named tests, eleven T2 Kani cores, and one T1 property. Its identity-plane sibling is NPOL in gominimal/gatehouse. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Scope. A single new file, docs/specs/12-spec-box-networking/12-spec-box-networking.md, cleanly matching the stated intent of a pre-implementation NET spec carrying the box host's side of the architecture. Structural counts all check out: 119 top-level requirements (NET-001..NET-119, no gaps or duplicates), 7 IF/THEN failure sub-bullets, 34 stories, tiers T0=115/T1=1/T2=10, exactly 10 Kani harness lines. The PR body's count of 'eleven T2 Kani harnesses' is off by one — the document (and its own Tiers paragraph) enumerate ten; every other body claim (119 requirements, 7 failure sub-bullets, 34 stories, one T1 proptest) is accurate. Clobber. None — new file, nothing else touched; the retired-surface and feature-grounding claims were checked against the tree and are accurate (Host-header hostname proxy ships at crates/minimald/src/net/proxy.rs; the legacy HTTPS reverse-proxy, min login and min ssh-forward exist today behind the default-off networking-proxy feature; direct-tcpip is off by default, so NET-110 binds a real change). Correctness. EARS shapes are consistent across all 126 statements; internally-checkable references (prose anchors, story anchors, invariant coverage lists, deprecation pairs NET-002/NET-004) line up. Two findings below. Could not check. The future cargo nextest test names, whether the T2 decision cores are actually separable from the async relay loops, and the T1 proptest dependency decision would all need a build; and just is not installed here to confirm the test-installer <arg> error first-hand. Assessment. A careful, unusually well-cross-referenced spec; the two findings are a wording contradiction in NET-037 (legacy flag spellings called 'the new spelling') and a systematic weakness in the verify lines that pass selector arguments to runners that cannot receive them.
What ran
5 probe(s), all self-reported — every entry below is the model's own account of what it ran. None of it is host-attested, so none of it can gate a blocking verdict.
Verification log
1. parse spec structure with python (req counts, tiers, harnesses, stories, ID gaps) — self-reported
Docs-only file parsed: 119 top-level NET-001..NET-119 requirements (no gaps, no dups), 7 nested IF/THEN failure sub-bullets, 34 stories, tier counts T0=115/T1=1/T2=10, exactly 10
harness:lines (kani_frame_verdict x7, plus loopback, rebinding, feed-seq). PR body claims 'eleven T2 Kani harnesses'; the document and its own Tiers paragraph enumerate ten.
2. rg + read crates/minimal/src/lib.rs:563 CliNetworkMode and its doc comment — exit 0 · self-reported
Shipped CLI derives kebab-case value_enum values host-net / own-ip / no-net and documents them as the current spellings; the spec's new canonical spellings (none|host_ip|own_ip via NET-035/040 and story S4a) are underscored. So the hyphenated forms NET-037 calls 'the new spelling' are the legacy spellings by the document's own convention and by its own verify-test name.
3. read scripts/session-e2e.sh top-level flow and justfile test-installer recipe — self-reported
scripts/session-e2e.sh takes no positional argument: the top-level flow reads only env vars (E2E_VM, E2E_MINIMAL_ARGS); the only
$@is inside amin()helper forwarding to the CLI, and$1appears only inside helper bodies. justfiletest-installer(line 398) declares no recipe parameters. Could not empirically runjust test-installer <arg>(just not installed in this sandbox); the claim that just rejects unexpected trailing args for a parameterless recipe follows from just's documented semantics.
4. rg minimald proxy module and Cargo.toml features — exit 0 · self-reported
Host-header hostname proxy ships at crates/minimald/src/net/proxy.rs (routes by Host header through the hostname registry, server.rs:738-750), so the first-slice premise holds.
ssh-forwardfeature is off by default in minimald/Cargo.toml with every direct-tcpip channel rejected fail-closed, so NET-110 binds a real change. The legacy HTTPS proxy, min loginandmin ssh-forwardall exist today, so NET-109's removal scope is grounded.
5. read docs/architecture.md and 03-spec-networking for spelling conventions — exit 0 · self-reported
Both older specs and architecture.md use hyphenated spellings throughout; no prior document uses host_ip/own_ip, confirming the underscored forms are introduced by this document as the new canonical spellings.

Scope matches the title: one new spec file docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md (932 lines, 119 requirements + 7 failure sub-bullets, 34 stories, tiers T0/T1/T2). The directory was deliberately renumbered 12→18 within the PR (12–16 are taken by other open specs) and content is unchanged. Clobber none: the file is new and git log on docs/specs/ and scripts/stage-release.sh shows no reverted work; the only other working-tree modification is .minimal/minimal.toml, which is local to the sandbox, not the PR. Correctness two findings below. The two review threads already open on this PR (NET-037's spelling direction; the eight verify: lines whose runners take no positional argument — ./scripts/session-e2e.sh <test> and just test-installer <test>) are both accurate and are not re-raised here; I confirmed session-e2e.sh's only $@ is inside its min() helper and the test-installer: recipe takes no arguments. Claims I checked and found sound: the T1 note that the workspace has no property-test dependency (no proptest/quickcheck in any Cargo.toml; only cfg(kani) in rcache and sessions); the 100.64.255.254 host literal (present in crates/minimald/src/net/mod.rs); the present state that egress enforcement is unimplemented and --network/--ingress are hidden from --help (both confirmed in code); and all nine cited crates exist. Not checked: the verify test names and Kani harnesses, which require a build and are pre-implementation (spec-lint already reports the unresolved tests). Two small PR-body staleness notes folded here rather than raised as findings (not anchorable to the diff): the body still names the pre-renumber path 12-spec-box-networking, and it says "eleven T2 Kani harnesses" where the document contains ten T2 requirements over four harnesses.

Verification log
1. grep -c 'NET-' + tier counts in .review/pr.diff — exit 0 · self-reported
119 NET-001..NET-119 requirement lines, no gaps or duplicates; 10
tier: T2and 1tier: T1line, matching the design-reasoning list of ten T2 decision cores. The PR body's 'eleven T2 Kani harnesses' is an off-by-one against the document.
2. Inspect scripts/stage-release.sh COMPONENTS and git log -S on it — exit 0 · self-reported
The linux/amd64 and linux/arm64 rows carry minvmd, gvproxy-min, and the guest payload (data/{vmlinuz,rootfs.img,initramfs.cpio}); added in 749515f (#1070, 2026-07-30), over six weeks before this spec. docs/internal/release-pipeline.md documents the same set. This contradicts the Context's 'a VM stack that only macOS installs receive'.
3. grep proptest/quickcheck/kani in crates/*/Cargo.toml and Cargo.toml — exit 0 · self-reported
No proptest or quickcheck anywhere;
cfg(kani)appears only in rcache and sessions. The T1 design-reasoning claim that NET-071 adds a property-test dependency the workspace does not have is accurate.
4. Read scripts/session-e2e.sh argument handling and justfile test-installer recipe — exit 0 · self-reported
session-e2e.sh's only '$@' is inside its min() helper forwarding to the CLI (line 192); the test-installer: recipe is parameterless. Confirms the two open threads on verify selector args; those points were not re-raised.
5. grep 'no-net' in .review/pr.diff — exit 0 · self-reported
The diff never mentions the current no-net spelling; NET-037 enumerates only host-net and own-ip, so the third legacy spelling has no parse-with-hint requirement.
6. git rev-parse HEAD — exit 0 · self-reported
HEAD is 4db4c17, equal to pr.json head_sha; the tree under review is the PR head commit.

Local-first ordering, 2026-09-15: NET now binds only what a box host does with no identity plane, on a laptop with VM-backed boxes or a co-resident Linux host. Thirty-six requirements whose precondition is enrolment, a gateway association, a mesh, or a remote session move, unchanged in text and tier, to three sibling specs from the same epic: EHE (#1418), GWI (#1419), MRF (#1420). Surviving IDs are unchanged; 83 remain, with all seven failure sub-bullets, nine Kani harnesses, and the T1 parity property. Context, Success, First slice, Non-goals, Design reasoning, Security considerations, and Open questions are rewritten for the local scope. The Context names the local Box Egress Proxy's dependencies on this document (box-zone resolution, DNS-pinned admission, proxy parity, UDP dropped unless declared). The host-OS resolution question is answered by design §7.1 v0.5 and folded in; NET-018 and NET-019 take their WHERE from its supersession condition; the macOS per-box-address mechanism stays open per design §12 item 13; the association-contract question moves out with EHE. NET-037 now calls the hyphenated spellings legacy. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Re-scope for reviewersNET is now the local-host spec (local-first ordering, 2026-09-15): what a box host does with no identity plane, on a laptop with VM-backed boxes or a co-resident Linux host, per design §7.1 and §7.4 (arch v0.5, gominimal/arch#64). The architecture is unchanged; only what is built first. What stayed (83 requirements, IDs unchanged, 24 stories): names and the hostname proxy, flags and What moved (36 requirements, text and tier unchanged, former IDs recorded beside each):
Every one of the 34 stories lands in exactly one spec. The CRITICAL association-contract question moved to EHE. The HIGH host-OS-resolution question is answered by design §7.1 v0.5 and folded into Design reasoning; NET-018 and NET-019 take their WHERE from its supersession condition. The macOS per-box-address mechanism stays HIGH, now stated per design §12 item 13 (gominimal/arch#61 closed with the bound normative, mechanism proposed). Why now: the local Box Egress Proxy spec is next and cites NET for box-zone resolution, DNS-pinned admission (NET-066, NET-067), proxy parity, and UDP-dropped-unless-declared (NET-064); the Context now says so. Also in this revision: NET-037 calls the hyphenated spellings legacy (the open advisory finding); the eight lane-scoped For gominimal/gatehouse#7 (NPOL): its two links to NET point at the old Lint ( |
Two review findings on the re-scope. The Context claimed Linux installs lack the VM stack; the release manifests have shipped minvmd, the switch, and the guest payload for linux/amd64 and linux/arm64 since #1070, so the gap NET-049 and NET-051 bind is a fresh KVM host activating a VM-backed box, and NET-048 and NET-050 guard shipped behaviour. NET-037 now enumerates `no-net` beside `host-net` and `own-ip`: it is the CLI's third kebab-case spelling and the one a saved config would otherwise fail on. Scope matches the title: one new file, the NET spec re-scoped to the un-enrolled local host — 83 requirements and 7 failure sub-bullets, with the 36 moved requirements (EHE 19, GWI 8, MRF 9) cross-referenced consistently and the surviving IDs continuous across the gaps. Clobber none: git log on the path shows the file was created by this PR (three commits), no recent work reverted. Correctness I checked the document's identifiers and claims against the tree: egress.allow_subnets/allow_dns_hosts/allow_protocols match sessions::EgressPolicy and the shipped 03-spec-networking; the current <session>.<host-id>.min.internal hostname form (default host-id local) makes .local.min.internal exactly the legacy spelling NET-002 deprecates; the :7654 proxy (EGRESS_PROXY_PORT), min session policy, the hidden --network/--ingress flags, the current kebab spellings (no-net/host-net/own-ip) behind NET-037's legacy enumeration, and NET-109's targets (min login hidden, min ssh-forward behind remote-access) all check out; the four earlier review threads are all fixed or answered in the PR body and not re-raised. Three low naming/under-specification gaps below. Not checked: the Kani harness names and the gominimal/arch citations (external repo — the enumerated baseline set and the dynamic_ingress term live there); nothing was built.

Verification log
1. rg -n 'egress_allow_dns' . — exit 0 · self-reported
Exactly one hit in the tree, NET-072 line 445; every other DNS-allowlist reference in the document (NET-066, Context) uses egress.allow_dns_hosts.
2. grep 'allow_dns_hosts' crates/sessions/src/lib.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
sessions::EgressPolicy has allow_subnets / allow_dns_hosts / allow_protocols (lines 88-92), matching NET-060 and NET-066; no egress_allow_dns field exists anywhere.
3. Read docs/specs/03-spec-networking R2.1-R2.4 — self-reported
Shipped spec (status: shipped) names the fields allow_subnets/allow_dns_hosts/allow_protocols and the dynamic port-mapping allowlist dynamic_allowed_ports (R2.3/R2.4); NET uses dynamic_ingress with no rename notice, unlike every other rename in the document.
4. Check CLI surfaces: CliNetworkMode, --network/--ingress hide, min session policy, EGRESS_PROXY_PORT, direct-tcpip — exit 0 · self-reported
cli::ValueEnum CliNetworkMode {NoNet,HostNet,OwnIp} kebab-cases to no-net/host-net/own-ip (NET-037's legacy set); --network/--ingress are #[clap(hide=true)] as the Context claims; min session policy exists; EGRESS_PROXY_PORT=7654; direct-tcpip handler kept in minimald connection.rs.

The local default path carries no WireGuard (design §7.1, §11). The Box Egress Proxy NET's Context anticipates is now the node-local BEP of Gatehouse §6.10 v1.19; its dependency list gains NET-084, the relay's source-address check that lets the proxy attribute a box by switch source. Store references and [secret-store-rules] consent are routed to the local BEP document; the hosted BEP stays with the broker epic. BareMetalVM, the sixth style, is named as EHE's with NET-081 to NET-085 as what a metal host reuses per VM. No requirement changes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Scope matches the title: one new spec document (docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking) re-scoping NET to the un-enrolled local host. 83 requirement headings, no duplicate IDs, and the moved-requirement references (NET-005/008/028-034/042/086-101/103/106/112-119) appear only in Non-goals — all consistent with the PR body's split. Clobber none: the file is new; git log shows four commits on the branch and no revert of recent work. Correctness three findings below: a story-tag contradiction (S17), a cross-daemon loopback-allocation gap against NET-010's T2 invariant, and an unstated supersession of the shipped 03-spec's HostNet-egress rejection. I verified the Context's baseline claims against the tree rather than taking them on trust: egress enforcement is indeed not implemented (crates/minimald/src/net/policy.rs splits R2.2 to #553), the hostname proxy routes *.min.internal by Host header, Linux amd64/arm64 installs ship the VM stack (scripts/stage-release.sh COMPONENTS since #1070), and CliNetworkMode kebab-cases to the exact legacy spellings NET-037 names. The two field-drift threads already open on this PR (NET-072 egress_allow_dns, NET-043 dynamic_ingress vs the shipped allow_dns_hos

Verification log
1. rg -n 'NoNet|HostNet|OwnIp' crates/minimal/src/lib.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
CliNetworkMode has variants NoNet/HostNet/OwnIp; clap kebab-cases to no-net/host-net/own-ip, matching NET-037's legacy set. --network and --ingress are #[clap(hide = true)] today, so NET-035/036's unhide requirement is genuine new behaviour.
2. grep docs/specs/03-spec-networking/03-spec-networking.md for R2.1-R2.4 wording — exit 0 · self-reported
Shipped spec (frontmatter status: shipped) defines allow_dns_hosts, dynamic_allowed_ports, and 'Specifying egress on a NoNet or HostNet PTask is a parse-time error' — the base for finding 3 and for the two existing field-drift threads.
3. grep -n 'S17' docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md — exit 0 · self-reported
Exactly one S17 story tag in NET, on NET-102 line 532, while the PR body lists S17 among the stories that moved to EHE — the contradiction in finding 1.
4. sed -n '1,30p' crates/minimald/src/net/policy.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
Egress enforcement is deliberately not implemented (gvproxy v0.8.9 has no per-client egress ACL; split to #553); only static ingress port-mapping and warning plumbing exist — the Context's 'no egress enforcement' claim holds.
5. grep -n 'COMPONENTS' scripts/stage-release.sh — exit 0 · self-reported
COMPONENTS carries minvmd, gvproxy-min, initramfs, rootfs, vmlinuz for linux/amd64 and linux/arm64 — the Context's corrected Linux baseline holds.

83 requirement headings, no duplicates; every requirement ID cited in Context/Design reasoning/Non-goals/Open questions resolves to a heading or a documented moved ID.

Two small asks from the local Box Egress Proxy spec (BEP, written against this document's egress fields; epic gominimal/inbox#625):
BEP takes the fields your non-goals send its way: |
- NET-060 accepts `egress.allow_dns_hosts`; NET-072 spells the field the same way (one spelling; design §7.1's `egress_allow_dns` is a §5.4 placeholder). - NET-003 resolves `host.min.internal` to an address; reach over it is local reach under the box's egress rules, so deny-all wins (NET-079). - NET-010 allocates from the host-global allocation; its property and harness range over every daemon on the host (NET-027, NET-059). - NET-045 gains a failure case: `ask` with no client attached is refused with a typed error, recorded by NET-046. - NET-120 accepts an `egress` section on a host-address box, superseding 03-spec R2.1's HostNet parse-time error; NET-065 keeps `none`. - NET-043 notes `dynamic_ingress` supersedes `dynamic_allowed_ports`. - NET-085 and the escape invariant cite design §5.1 for the baseline set. - Context limits the switch-source attribution to VM-backed hosts; the host-address cohort is attributed as one cohort (NET-078). - S17 is a split story: its text is transcribed, NET-102 keeps the un-enrolled clause, EHE holds the enrolled ones. - Design reasoning records each choice and the alternative rejected. Short answer, and it is a good one: almost nothing. I went looking for interface debt at the local/remote seam and the remote-facing items I found are all additive — a versioned sealed envelope, tightening So everything below is local. Three items here, one on #1426. 1. NET-109 contradicts #1426's design reasoningNET-109 reads:
BEP's design reasoning (#1426) reads:
NET-109 is that separate change, and it removes rather than re-homes. Both documents are up for review at the same time, so one of them is wrong today. Separately, "no client-certificate issuance" is unqualified, while CRA (#1374) authenticates remote attach with identity-plane certificates. The distinction — daemon-issued versus issuer-issued — is real, but the requirement text does not carry it, and a reader retiring "client-certificate issuance" has no way to tell which one is meant. Suggest NET-109 name the surface being retired (the reverse proxy's own issuance and its CLI) rather than the capability. Command-tree removals are the one thing users have scripted against. 2. Nothing binds installing the box-zone resolverNET-009 is conditioned on the resolver already being there:
The command that configures it appears only in Design reasoning — "macOS uses That matters beyond NET, because BEP-016 resolves an unset 3. NET-060 binds two fields; BEP-008 needs a thirdNET-060:
BEP-008 refuses expansion with exit 3 when a grant's host set is not admitted by Raised on #1426 insteadDNS-steering fallback when the proxy is down: the resolver behaviour is shared with this document, but the security default it sets (credential substitution and the egress re-check being skipped) is BEP's, so I put it there. Scope matches the title: one new spec file (844 lines) re-scoped to the un-enrolled local host, with 36 requirements moved to three sibling specs recorded in the body, non-goals, and the requirement comments. 84 requirement definitions are present; the ID gaps (005, 008, 028-034, 042, 086-101, 103, 106, 112-119) match the EHE/GWI/MRF moved-ID lists exactly, and the stated counts check out (8 failure sub-bullets; nine T2 harnesses plus the one T1 property in the doc match the body's 'nine'/'ten' accounting). Clobber none: the file is new and git log on the path shows only this PR's five commits. Correctness I verified the codebase-facing claims rather than taking them on faith: sessions::EgressPolicy carries allow_dns_hosts (crates/sessions/src/lib.rs:86-92), so NET-060/NET-072's one-spelling claim holds; validate_policy rejects egress on every non-OwnIp mode today via EgressRequiresOwnIp (lib.rs:485-487), so NET-120's 'the daemon's session RPC still enforces' premise holds and NET-065's none-only narrowing is accurate; 03-spec R2.1's HostNet parse-time error and R2.3's dynamic_allowed_ports are real, and neither field exists in any crate; scripts/stage-release.sh COMPONENTS ships minvmd/gvproxy-min/initramfs/rootfs/vmlinuz on linux/amd64 and arm64, so the corrected Context stands; the 100.64.255.254 host alias (NAT'd to loopback, crates/minvmd/src/net.rs:789) and the shipped hostname-proxy registry (crates/minimald/src/net/dns.rs) both exist. Two findings below: NET-074 flips the shipped 03-spec default for absent egress from allow-all to deny-all without naming the superseded rule, and the provenance comments carry review-history narration. Not checked: spec_lint.py (lives in gominimal/foundry, not this checkout) and the epic's story-level accounting (needs the inbox issue).
What ran
11 probe(s), all self-reported — every entry below is the model's own account of what it ran. None of it is host-attested, so none of it can gate a blocking verdict.
Verification log
1. rg -n 'allow_dns_hosts|EgressPolicy|allow_subnets|allow_protocols' crates/sessions/src — exit 0 · self-reported
EgressPolicy at lib.rs:86 carries allow_subnets, allow_dns_hosts, allow_protocols; NET-060/NET-072's spelling claim is accurate.
2. rg -n 'NoNet|HostNet|OwnIp' crates/minimal/src/lib.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
CliNetworkMode has NoNet/HostNet/OwnIp (clap kebab-cases to the no-net/host-net/own-ip forms NET-037 calls legacy).
3. read crates/sessions/src/lib.rs validate_policy (422-497) — self-reported
Egress on any non-OwnIp mode returns PolicyError::EgressRequiresOwnIp today, so NET-120's 'the daemon's session RPC still enforces' premise and NET-065's none-only narrowing are both accurate.
4. rg -n 'R2\.[0-9]|parse-time|dynamic_allowed_ports|allow-all' docs/specs/03-spec-networking/03-spec-networking.md — exit 0 · self-reported
R2.1 makes egress on NoNet/HostNet a parse-time error and defaults absent fields to allow-all; R2.3/R2.4 name dynamic_allowed_ports; both field names appear in no crate.
5. rg -n -A 12 'COMPONENTS' scripts/stage-release.sh — exit 0 · self-reported
COMPONENTS carries minvmd, gvproxy-min, initramfs, rootfs, vmlinuz for linux/amd64 and linux/arm64, confirming the corrected Context claim (thread 3).
6. rg -o -- '- \*\*NET-[0-9]+\*\*' 18-spec-box-networking.md | sort -V — exit 0 · self-reported
84 requirement definitions; missing IDs are exactly 005/008, 028-034, 042, 086-101, 103, 106, 112-119, matching the EHE/GWI/MRF moved lists; no dangling defined-ID references.
7. rg -n 'min\.internal|100\.64\.255\.254' crates — exit 0 · self-reported
Hostname-proxy registry (minimald/src/net/dns.rs) and the 100.64.255.254 host alias NAT'd to 127.0.0.1 (minvmd/src/net.rs:789) both exist, grounding NET-004's legacy-literal and the First-slice 'proxy that already ships' claims.
8. rg -n 'ssh-forward|direct-tcpip' crates/minimal crates/minimald — exit 0 · self-reported
min ssh-forward is gated behind the mesh feature and the daemon's direct-tcpip handler behind ssh-forward, so NET-109/NET-110 bind future removal/always-on behaviour rather than describing today's tree.
9. head scripts/session-e2e.sh — exit 0 · self-reported
Takes no positional selector (drives lanes by env vars only), confirming the thread-resolved note that the five session-e2e verify lines read as lane gates; not re-raised.
10. count T2/T1 requirements in 18-spec-box-networking.md — self-reported
Nine T2 (010, 016-sub, 062, 064, 067, 069, 070, 081-sub, 084) and one T1 (071) match the PR body's corrected 'ten' count; eight failure sub-bullets also match.
11. git log --oneline -- docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking — exit 0 · self-reported
Only this PR's five commits touch the path; no recent fix reverted.

Reviewed for correctness, simplicity, and alignment with gominimal/arch main at 3987a07 (design v0.7.1, Gatehouse v1.20.1, command tree after arch#72). Inline comments below.
What checked out against §7.1 and §4.1 as written: moved-ID and tier accounting, the parity rule (NET-069 to NET-071), dynamic ingress without the identity socket (NET-043 to NET-047), self-allocation (NET-102), proxy supersession (NET-018/019), and host-side enforcement (NET-081 to NET-084).
Of the open bot findings I agree with NET-068, the NET-074/077 precedence and the "two shipped rules" miscount, and stating NET-079's enforcement locus (inside the box host, per UC3). I would skip the ask to qualify the first invariant; the design splits precision from floor the same way.

Scope matches the title: a single new file, docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md, the NET spec re-scoped to the un-enrolled local host. Clobber none: the file is new; git log on the path shows only this branch's own commits, and the sibling moves (EHE/GWI/MRF) are external PRs referenced but not edited. Correctness is high. I verified the crate claims that anchor the requirements: sessions::EgressPolicy carries allow_subnets/allow_dns_hosts/allow_protocols but rejects egress on any non-OwnIp mode (PolicyError::EgressRequiresOwnIp), matching NET-120's supersession claim; CliNetworkMode is NoNet|HostNet|OwnIp (NET-037's legacy spellings); DEFAULT_HOST_ID = "local" (NET-002); 03-spec R2.1/R2.3 say what the supersession notes say they say; direct-tcpip is feature-gated behind ssh-forward (NET-110). All 93 top-level requirements + 12 sub-bullets carry verify lines; every internal NET-ID cross-reference resolves, and the 12 referenced-but-absent IDs are exactly the ones moved to siblings. Two residual issues below. Not checked: spec_lint.py is not available in this sandbox, so the body's lint counts could not be re-run; the Kani/proptest claims and the design-§7.1 facts are cited, not verifiable here. Note for the author: the PR body's counts are stale against the head commit that added NET-121–130 — it says 84 requirements / 8 failure sub-bullets / 120 P004 (NET 84), while the document at this head carries 93 requirements, 12 sub-bullets, and 105 verify lines. The body also claims the design reasoning has 2-sibling coverage where the current doc has four split stories and new requirements; worth a refresh before merge.

Verification log
1. rg -n 'deny_subnets' crates/ — exit 0 · self-reported
No crate defines deny_subnets; EgressPolicy at crates/sessions/src/lib.rs:86-93 carries only allow_subnets, allow_dns_hosts, allow_protocols.
2. Read crates/sessions/src/lib.rs:86-93 and 170-175 — self-reported
EgressPolicy struct confirmed; PolicyError::EgressRequiresOwnIp rejects egress on any non-OwnIp PTask, consistent with NET-120's supersession of the HostNet parse-time error.
3. rg -n 'CliNetworkMode|NoNet|HostNet|OwnIp' crates/minimal/src/lib.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
CliNetworkMode is NoNet|HostNet|OwnIp (lines 563-566), kebab-cased by clap, matching NET-037's legacy enumeration.
4. rg -n 'DEFAULT_HOST_ID' crates/minimald/src/net/dns.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
DEFAULT_HOST_ID = "local", host-id configurable; 03-spec R3.1 hostname format ..min.internal matches NET-002.
5. rg -n 'R2\.1|R2\.3|dynamic_allowed_ports|parse-time error|allow-all' docs/specs/03-spec-networking/03-spec-networking.md — exit 0 · self-reported
03-spec R2.1/R2.3 wording matches the supersession claims (egress on NoNet/HostNet parse-time error; absent egress defaults allow-all; dynamic_allowed_ports).
6. grep -c 'verify:' and count NET-ID bullets and sub-bullets in the spec — self-reported
93 top-level requirements + 12 sub-bullets = 105 verify lines, all present; no requirement lacks a verify.
7. Cross-reference every NET-\d+ in the document — self-reported
Referenced-but-not-bulleted IDs are exactly the 36 moved to EHE/GWI/MRF (NET-005, 008, 028-034, 042, 086-101, 103, 106, 112-119); no stray internal references.
8. grep -rn 'proptest' Cargo.toml crates/*/Cargo.toml — exit 1 · self-reported
No property-test dependency in the workspace, supporting the T1 paragraph's cost claim for NET-071.
9. grep -n 'review finding\|corrected\|this revision' docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/18-spec-box-networking.md — exit 1 · self-reported
No review-history narration remains in requirement comments; the earlier style finding is clean at head.
10. grep -n 'TODO\|FIXME\|lorem\|placeholder' on the spec — exit 1 · self-reported
No leftover placeholders except the intentional 'design §5.4's placeholder names' note.
11. git log --format='%h %ad %s' --date=short -- docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking/ — self-reported
File history is only this branch's commits; no revert of recent work. The working-tree .minimal/minimal.toml change is the review harness's own staging, not part of the PR diff.
12. grep -n 'session-e2e.sh\|test-installer' on the spec — self-reported
5 session-e2e verify lines and 3 test-installer verify lines, matching the body's eight-lane-gate note; PR body count of 8 sub-bullets is stale (12 at head).

Compare
Revision 2's reference-link reflow collapsed the Non-goals and Open questions lists into paragraphs; both are lists again. NET-010 and its injectivity property are scoped WHERE the reserved local range is present, so NET-123's 127.0.0.1 interim composes with it. NET-121's failure cases carry the whole design §7.1 bind discipline: revocation unbinds and terminates established connections, and a failed forwarder bind is reported, never substituted. Design reasoning states that egress.deny_subnets has no crate counterpart, that min ls is the tree's own alias, and NET-072's comment cites box.toml for the canonical spelling. Bare issue references are links. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Clobber none: the file is new, and git log --oneline -5 shows only this PR's revision commits touching it. Correctness I verified the document's claims against the tree and they hold: sessions::EgressPolicy (crates/sessions/src/lib.rs:86-93) carries exactly allow_subnets/allow_dns_hosts/allow_protocols and no deny_subnets, matching the Design-reasoning field-names account; CliNetworkMode (crates/minimal/src/lib.rs:563-566) is kebab-cased by clap to no-net/host-net/own-ip, matching NET-037's legacy enumeration and NET-035's canonical spellings; --provider local-minvmd, min session policy, min ls, min login, min ssh-forward, DEFAULT_HOST_ID="local" and the <session>.<host-id>.min.internal form, the 100.64.0.0/16 switch subnet with its host alias, the channel_open_direct_tcpip handler, and the workspace's lack of any proptest/quickcheck dependency all check out. Internal accounting is consistent: all 93 requirement IDs resolve, story-tag coverage is complete for the 25 story bullets, the 9 T2/T1 tier claims match their harness: lines, and no revision-narration remains in the provenance comments. One finding below, a stale count in the PR body's own Summary. Not checked (each needs a build or the foundry toolchain): the verify: test names (all P004 — none exist, acknowledged in the body's Notes), the Kani harness bounds, and spec_lint.py beyond the body's report.

Verification log
1. git log --oneline -5 && head_sha match — exit 0 · self-reported
HEAD is 610ac4c, matching pr.json; the file is new in this PR, no prior commits on the path, so no clobber risk.
2. Read crates/sessions/src/lib.rs:86-93 — self-reported
EgressPolicy carries allow_subnets, allow_dns_hosts, allow_protocols only; deny_subnets appears nowhere. The doc's 'three fields follow EgressPolicy, deny_subnets introduced here' claim is accurate.
3. Read crates/minimal/src/lib.rs:563-566 — self-reported
CliNetworkMode {NoNet, HostNet, OwnIp} has no clap value attrs, so kebab-case yields no-net/host-net/own-ip — the legacy spellings NET-037 names; provider enum has Provider::LocalMinvmd; SessionCommand has Policy ('min session policy') and List (visible_alias 'ls').
4. Read crates/minimald/src/net/dns.rs — self-reported
DEFAULT_HOST_ID = "local" and the registered form is ..min.internal, matching NET-002's general form.

Switch subnet is 100.64.0.0/16 (RFC 6598) with a host_alias rendered to 127.0.0.1, supporting NET-004's 100.64.255.254 literal and NET-067's infra-deny '100.64.0.0/10 plane'.
6. rg proptest|quickcheck workspace Cargo.tomls — exit 1 · self-reported
No property-test dependency anywhere, backing the Tiers claim that NET-071 (T1) 'adds a property-test dependency the workspace does not have'.
7. rg direct_tcpip crates/minimald/src/connection.rs — exit 0 · self-reported
channel_open_direct_tcpip handler exists and is gated by an SSH username rule, consistent with NET-110.
8. rg -n '\$@' scripts/session-e2e.sh && justfile test-installer — exit 0 · self-reported
session-e2e.sh forwards $@ only to the min CLI and takes no test selector; justfile has a test-installer recipe. Confirms the body's Notes that the eight lane-gate verify lines are future assertions.
9. counted requirement headings and sub-bullets — self-reported

Re-checked head 610ac4c against gominimal/arch main (still 3987a07). All sixteen threads from my earlier review are addressed in the text, and the new requirements (NET-121 to NET-130) match design §7.1 as written, with one exception: NET-127 needs scoping to the host answerer, or it forbids the in-guest answers NET-003 and NET-072/073 rely on. Approval follows that fix. Two small items and three nits inline; the small ones close the open CodeRabbit threads.
… nits NET-127 is the host answerer's confinement rule per design §7.1, so it now triggers on lookups originating on the host OS; in-guest the node's DNS layer answers with switch addresses, which NET-003 and NET-072/073 rely on. The sixth invariant's enforced-by says the same. NET-124's NODATA rule covers held names only, leaving unknown names to NET-125. NET-130 keeps the daemon's registry and cache endpoints in the baseline enumeration, which is what NET-080's package fetch rests on. NET-003 says "inside boxes" without qualification, NET-123's comment records that Linux always carries the range on lo, and the retirement non-goal names the general zone form. Revision 4 pushed (4980c7f): the six items from the re-check, including the NET-127 scoping to the host answerer, plus the three open CodeRabbit threads they close and the sub-bullet count nit. The body's "Review revision 4" section lists them; replies on each thread. Lint: 93 findings, all P004. |

Verdict COMMENT — COMMENT: policy.actions.request_changes is off; 1 finding(s) above severity 'nit' rule out APPROVE.
Scope matches the title and intent: a single new spec file, docs/specs/18-spec-box-networking, binding the un-enrolled local-host profile from design §7.1/§7.4. Clobber none — the file is new; git log on the path shows only this PR's commits, and it does not touch the frozen .github/workflows or the shipped 03-spec. Correctness — verified extensively and found the document internally sound in most respects: 93 main requirements and 14 sub-bullets (12 failure cases) exactly as the body claims; every requirement and sub-bullet is EARS-shaped; every NET-XXX cross-reference resolves to a requirement present here or documented as moved (EHE/GWI/MRF) or retired (NET-108); the tier/harness bookkeeping is consistent (nine T2 requirements over three Kani harnesses — the body's 'Nine T2 Kani harnesses' phrase reads loosely but the document itself is precise); the claims about the shipped tree all check out against the code (sessions::EgressPolicy carries allow_subnets/allow_dns_hosts/allow_protocols and no deny_subnets; DEFAULT_HOST_ID = "local" in minimald/src/net/dns.rs; the 100.64.255.254 → 127.0.0.1 literal in the switch config; 03-spec R2.1's parse-time error for egress on a HostNet PTask and R2.3's dynamic_allowed_ports, both superseded here; min ssh-forward/mesh/login present and net absent in the shipped CLI). One finding below: NET-040's published endpoint 127.0.0.1:8080 conflicts with NET-010's own-address allocation on the Linux lane, which NET-123's own comment says always has the reserved range present. Not checked: the external arch/design documents (gominimal/arch is not reachable from this sandbox, and the workspace cannot be built here), so claims keyed to design §7.1/§5.3 values such as the 127.0.64.0/24 range were verified for internal consistency only.

Verification log
1. grep count of NET-XXX main requirements and sub-bullets — exit 0 · self-reported
93
- **NET-requirement headers and 14 indented EARS sub-bullets, matching the PR body's claim (12 of the 14 are IF/failure clauses).
2. python EARS-structure check over all requirements — exit 0 · self-reported
All 93 requirements start with WHEN/IF/WHILE/WHERE or THE SYSTEM SHALL and contain 'THE SYSTEM SHALL'; all 14 sub-bullets are EARS-shaped. No grammar violations.
3. cross-reference existence check for every NET-XXX mention — exit 0 · self-reported
Every referenced NET ID is either a requirement present in the file or a documented move (NET-005/008/028-034/042/086-101/103 to EHE/GWI, NET-106/112-119 to MRF) or the retired NET-108. No dangling references.

verify:targets name real workspace crates (minimald, minimal, minvmd, sessions, sandbox2, switch) or the acknowledged lane runners (scripts/session-e2e.sh, just test-installer).
5. shipped-tree claims checked in crates/ and 03-spec-networking — exit 0 · self-reported
EgressPolicy fields, DEFAULT_HOST_ID='local', the 100.64.255.254 literal, ssh-forward/direct-tcpip feature gating, and 03-spec R2.1/R2.3 superseded rules all match the code and the shipped spec.
6. NET-040 endpoint cross-read against NET-010/NET-123 — exit 0 · self-reported
NET-040 (line 277) requires publishing 127.0.0.1:8080 on a fresh install 'Linux and macOS both'; NET-010 (line 150) requires own-address boxes to get their own host loopback address and publish ports there, and NET-123's comment (line 595) states the range is always present on Linux — so the Linux lane satisfies NET-010's WHERE and the box is published at its own 127.0.64.N address, not 127.0.0.1. No reconciliation of the two appears anywhere in the document.
