Description

Before: marketplaces (#276) could only be browsed one at a time in the web app, an installed plugin always showed a plain Update button whether or not anything changed, and agents had no way to find or install a plugin over MCP or in chat.

After:

  • GET /api/v1/marketplaces/plugins?q=&updates= finds plugins across every marketplace added (words in name, description, category or author); updates=true lists only plugins you installed whose marketplace now lists another version.
  • Each plugin row carries installed_version and update; the Marketplace page shows Installed 1.2.0 and a primary Update to 1.3.0 button when there is one.
  • MCP: find_plugins (read) and install_plugin (write scope; preview: true says what it would add and what Lens leaves out).
  • Assistant: find_plugins and install_plugin in the Extensions and skills group; installing waits for the person's yes, like save_extension.

Motivation and Context

"Extensions marketplace" from the feature list, built on #276 (marketplaces) and #563 (lens ext). Closes the "update-available check" refine-later note from #276 and makes the marketplace agent-first.

Types of changes

  • Bug fix
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change

Checklist:

  • The title is a Conventional Commit.
  • My code follows the code style of this project.
  • I added or updated tests (test_found_updated_and_installed_by_agents, a UI test for the update button, the MCP write-tool list).
  • Docs updated (docs/assistant.md, docs/mcp.md, docs/requirements.md, README).
  • Changelog fragment: changelog.d/extensions-marketplace-agents.md.

Done questions (AGENTS.md)

  • Goal: agents and people find, install and update marketplace plugins; merge on green.
  • Agents: MCP find_plugins/install_plugin, assistant tools, REST endpoint.
  • Zero setup: nothing new to install or configure.
  • Fewest clicks: the update shows on the row with its version; one click to update.
  • Configurable: n/a, no new setting (the existing ai.extensions switch covers the assistant tools).
  • Light: no new dependency or service.
  • Private and secure: same permissions as the REST install (write scope, writer role); the assistant asks first; marketplaces stay admin-added; plugin text from MCP results is flagged as outside text like every other tool. No new surface for the threat model.
  • Cost: no model calls added.
  • User decides: installing from chat waits for approval; nothing installs or updates on its own; defaults unchanged.
  • Upgrades: no stored-data change; older installs without source.version show update: false.
  • Honest: listed as built only with its tests.
  • Tests, docs and generated files (make openapi) updated.
  • Open standards: Anthropic's open plugin format, unchanged.
  • Reported in the project thread; refine later: compare versions semantically (today any differing version counts as an update), refresh marketplaces on a schedule.
  • Reuse: reuses marketplace.preview/install and the existing approval flow.

Generated by Claude Code

find_plugins and install_plugin over MCP and in chat (install waits for the
person's yes), GET /api/v1/marketplaces/plugins across marketplaces, and an
installed plugin says when its marketplace lists another version.
