Description

Before: GET /api/v1/automations gave each automation's triggers as JSON, with no way to say in a list what sets it off, how often it ran today or when it runs next.

After: each automation in the list also has reads, its triggers in words (“Email received”, where the subject contains “trip”; every weekday at 07:00 (Europe/London); a call to its webhook; then its join when there are several), runs_today (since midnight UTC, tries left out) and next_at, its soonest waiting schedule, at, relative or join timer. match.describe_trigger and match.describe_triggers do the reading, reusing schedule.describe, the kinds catalog's labels and describe_join.

Motivation and Context

Workflow studio M11 (Studio UI), Build step 1: the list at /automations shows "a reading of triggers, ... last run, runs today, waiting, cost, next time". Agents get the same words over the API.

Types of changes

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change; ! in the title)

Checklist:

  • The title is a Conventional Commit.
  • My code follows the code style of this project (make hooks checks it on commit).
  • I added or updated tests (test_automations.py::test_lists_read_the_triggers_in_words_and_say_when_it_runs_next, test_match_joins.py::test_triggers_read_in_words).
  • My change requires documentation updates: docs/automations.md, docs/api.md.
  • CHANGELOG: n/a, the title says it.

Local CI on this commit stacked on #576 (--jobs backend,server,pre-commit): FastAPI embedded pass, FastAPI server pass, pre-commit pass. make openapi output regenerated and unchanged on today's main.

Done questions (AGENTS.md)

  • Goal: one part of M11; merged on green.
  • Agents: the words are in the API response agents already read.
  • Zero setup: nothing to install or set.
  • Fewest clicks: n/a, API fields.
  • Configurable: n/a, no new settings.
  • Light: two small queries per list (runs today, the soonest timer), on indexed fields.
  • Private and secure: n/a, the same rows the person could already list; trigger words quote only the trigger's own settings.
  • Cost: no model calls.
  • User decides: n/a, read-only.
  • Upgrades: n/a, no stored data changes.
  • Honest: docs describe exactly the new fields.
  • Tests added, docs updated, the client regenerated with make openapi tooling.
  • Open: n/a.
  • Reported in the project thread.
  • Reuse: schedule.describe, the kinds catalog and describe_join.

…th its runs today and next time

GET /automations adds reads (match.describe_triggers: each trigger in
words, then its join), runs_today and next_at (its soonest schedule, at,
relative or join timer), for the studio's list.
