⚠️ WARNING: Mercari defaults sellers to “free shipping” without clear disclosure — I sold shoes for $9 and ended up paying shipping out of my own pocket just to complete the sale. The shipping label didn’t even show the real cost, so there was no way to catch it. You can literally lose money giving away your own items.

On top of that, there is NO way to reach a live person when something goes wrong. Just automated loops. If you’re a seller, check your shipping settings carefully before you list anything, or you’ll get burned like I did.

This isn’t a bug, it’s a design choice that benefits Mercari at sellers’ expense. Buyer/seller beware.

Very disappointing experience. I spent $135 on an order that never arrived, waited over a month, and received notice that the package was lost/missing. After escalating the issue, Mercari refused to refund me because their system showed the package as delivered and instead told me to pursue the carrier myself.

Mercari facilitated the transaction, released the seller’s payment, and then closed my case without resolving it. After this experience, I no longer feel comfortable using Mercari as a buyer.

Bought a product. Seller never shipped. Got a refund. Seller re-listed item to waste someone else’s time. Reported seller. Mercari doesn’t care.

The company is a joke. I bought a karaoke machine for my mother for her birthday. It took a while to get. It delivered while I was out of town. I held till her birthday when I got back. It was broken. I contacted the seller. They were willing to help. It mercari blocked our communications saying was against their rules to talk to the seller and refuse to do anything because I hadn't complained within 3 days of the delivery. I hadnt opened it. It was a gift so i left it in box. So out 80.00 for something broken that had shipping insurance. Do not use this app.

Mercari is requiring sellers to upload a government-issued ID to proceed with selling. I was given no clear explanation and no alternative option—ID or you can’t continue.
That’s not a small “verification step.” A government ID contains sensitive personal data, and handing it over to a resale marketplace increases privacy exposure and the potential impact of any breach, misuse, or unauthorized access. Once that data is uploaded, you can’t take back the risk.

Seller beware: if you rely on Mercari for income or side sales, know that continued access may now be conditioned on surrendering your ID.

Buyer beware: policies like this can change who is able (or willing) to sell on the platform.

I’m leaving Mercari because I’m not comfortable trading my privacy for the ability to use the marketplace.

I was stolen from by someone with a handle, @ddeansss on this platform. They took my payment for a neehdoh they likely stole and tried to "sell". They took my money, did not send to a single message from me or app not did they ship. I will ensure this con artist doesn't have the chance to "sell" anything on any platform again. In the meantime, I've requested a cancelation but no one responds, supposedly Mercari "asks" the thief to approve the cancelation??? Are you kidding me???? This is NOT a legitimate app. Try Poshmark, even Ebay but Mercari? This a scam app that sets pretense that they verify users but it's lies. Please trust me. I was the wrong one to steal from, I promise you that.

Mercari had a seller who sold me counterfeit trading cards. Upon informing them, they tried denying a refund, so I escalated with my bank for a charge back all while trying to return the products (at the seller's insistence). Eventually I escalated far enough for Mercari to send a return label because I showed that their guidance violated their own return policy (it took days of escalation), at which point Mercari banned my account because I had a charge back in the first place. Trust me when I say if you are a buyer, or a seller, you will be screwed on Mercari. This is the worst selling platform on the planet, and the leadership team should be in jail for fraud.

Very disappointed. Even when a carrier lost my package and said it was delivered to my address they took their side. Why would I want to go through the hassle of emailing back and forth and waiting for 2 weeks for a package I “ received “. I dislike this app very much at the moment

Every attempted order on Mercari ends in cancelation because I never receive the item. Sellers don't respond to inquiries so you have to wait over 2 weeks to be able to file a complaint or claim to try and get your money back. And then you can't leave negative feedback for a seller to warn other possible customers. I am convinced that Mercari is one giant scam site. Save yourself a lot of time and money - shop another platform like eBay or Poshmark. Mercari is a total joke.

Use a different platform! I was charged $80 for shipping fees for a handbag. The last supervisor I spoke to responded with a snarky remark that I didn’t appreciate and I was being kind. Bad customer service. Shipping fees are absurd. Use Poshmark or Vintage instead.

Mercari used to be a great place to sell and i really did sell a lot 5 years ago. But now its next to nothing at all. I don't know what's going on with Mercari. Ive heard rumors that they want to make it a China marketplace like Shein or Temu. I don't know for sure. Its just not the same anymore and based on the rest of these reviews I think its time to pull my inventory and move on.

product was defective. didnt try it until after the 72 hour automatic rating period. mercari did nothing. seller ate my money.

Run away from this site, I brought an item for my game console and it didn't work because seller failed to give specifics about it and refused a return, this site never allows buyers to return so stay away from them, what a horrible experience, they should shut down this website.

I've removed all my listings from Mercari after six (6) years. As of the time of this review, they have made illegitimate billing charges against my sales claiming the shipping carrier (UPS) charged extra for shipping. UPS has no such record of a shipping overage, and Mercari refuses to provide any documentation from UPS as evidence of the additional billing. I filed a complaint with UPS Fraud Auditing department, provided Mercari with the file number and still Mercari refuses to provide me evidence of the extra shipping charge. There are many complaints against Mercari doing this to customers and you can read about it on-line.

Vendor decribed item as new, free shipping, and receipt within 8 days.
- Item was in good condition but definately used.
- Item shipping was not free, cost $20.
- Item sent out 9 days after purchase (after reminding the seller).
- Item received 17 days after ordering.
- Mercari gives you 3 days to rate a seller - which really means exactly 72.0 hours exactly. Do not be a minute late. They will post their own 5-star rating and decline your communications about rating the seller. With all the automated 5-star seller ratings in the system, you really can't trust that.

SELLERS BEWARE! I attempted to set up an account and sell some items on Mercari. In the process, my credit card got hacked and I received a fraudulent charge on it from Poland. In addition I received 20 spam/fraud emails sent to the email address I provided to Mercari. They denied it was their fault. It happened because I used the Mercari website. Their security is poor or non-existent. I had to cancel my credit card.

If you’re a seller on Mercari, be prepared to receive warnings for supposedly selling counterfeit items—even when your items are authentic.

An item I posted was completely authentic, yet I was asked to provide a receipt and detailed information about where I purchased it. (Mercari app also doesnt let you post expensive items , unless you pay Mercari $5 to authenticate it first, that gives you the answer why they say your items are not authentic , of course they want you to authenticate all of them and pay Mercari $5 for each)

What made the situation even more frustrating is that some of the other items I listed were not even branded. They were simply regular gold-plated jewelry, yet I still received a warning claiming I was selling counterfeit items.

This clearly shows that there are serious issues with Mercari’s authentication system and algorithm. Instead of taking the time to properly review the listings, legitimate sellers can end up being penalized for no valid reason.

When I contacted Mercari to explain the situation and ask them to correct the issue, they closed my account and prohibited me from opening another one.

So who really loses money here? Mercari does. They could have continued earning money from a legitimate seller, but instead, they chose to remove the seller altogether.

And I’m sure I’m not the only seller experiencing this.

Good luck, Mercari. If legitimate sellers continue being treated this way, eventually you may find yourself with fewer and fewer sellers willing to use the platform. Nice job!

Most deceitful company ever. Purchased AirPods on July 16. Seller did not ship fur 11 days. The only tracking information ever received was that the post office received the item on July 27. Was supposed to be delivered on July 30. Seller never responded to requests for assistance. Corresponded with Mercari numerous times who said they won’t step in until August 26. O contacted USPS on my own on August 6 and did a missing mail request. Post office cannot find the package. I’ve told that to Mercari several times but they insisted I had to wait until August 26. On August 26 I contacted Mercari and they said since tracking information was updated 19 days earlier I had to wait 30 days. No tracking was updated it was my missing all request but they still refused to provide a refund. I contacted my financial institution in August 27 to file a dispute. Ironically Mercari said they tried to process my refund but it was being declined (total lie). Then they told me the would not provide a refund since I initiate a credit dispute. Then on top of all that they closed my Mercari account and said they would not open it unless I drop my credit dispute. That has to be illegal. I hope no one ever uses them and they rot.

They take way to much for seller fees then there’s cash out fees and when they decide your 16 ounce pair of shoes weighs 11 pounds they charge you $30 for a mistake on there part. This is a worse platform than Facebook marketplace. Wish I could give 0 stars.

This is the second adult age infantile abnormal parasite alleged seller i had the displeasure of dealing with on Mercari , My message to this seller is , Give yourself a happy emoji during the final moment of your uncultured base vulgar animal existence ! .
