Nationwide Building Society, just not what they used to be!
I have been a member of Nationwide Building Society for over 30 years, I have numerous accounts including a mortgage with them and the last few years it has been one issue after the other. The latest is the refusal to refund non sterling transactional fees of £25.49, we used our nationwide visa debit as security when we checked into a hotel in Dublin and used a different card to pay when checking out, the hotel had put the transaction through on the visa debit and then refunded it and Nationwide charged the fees even though it was refunded. When I seen the fees I rang Nationwide and spent 15 mins waiting to get through to be told it was the wrong department and I would need to contact visa dispute team however as it was 5pm they would be gone so would have to ring back the next day. I asked the lady if she could send visa dispute team an email and ask someone to contact me to save me having to ring and wait on an answer, she told me they couldn’t do that I would have to ring back! The next morning I rang the same number as before and asked to be put through to the visa dispute team, I spoke to a guy who asked for the details so he could have a look, he put me on hold to speak to someone and when he came back said I would need to contact the hotel as it would be up to them as they put the transaction through even though the fees were charged by Nationwide! I asked to be transferred to the visa dispute team to be told by the guy that they wouldn’t be able to help, when I asked why his colleague told me to contact them he said they just sometimes get mixed up!!!!!! I insisted on speaking to them and eventually got transferred only to be told they could do nothing. I asked them to raise a complaint regarding all the issues I had and told someone would contact me in a few days, that call was another 30 mins out of my working day. I was contacted today by the lady handling the complaint who said they couldn’t refund the fees as they done nothing wrong and I would have to contact the hotel, I asked if this could be taken further and she said I could take it to the financial ombudsman. I am totally flabbergasted at the way this has been handled by Nationwide and feel I have no alternative other than look into transferring our accounts including mortgage to a better provider, so sorely disappointed!
Further to my review Nationwide have reimbursed me with £25 as a gesture of goodwill due to the inaccurate information I received, suppose I have to be grateful for that as it covers the fees apart from a few pence however I was given inaccurate information and would rather not have had to make all the calls and deal with the upset!
