I chose the highest-tier dental insurance for protection when it mattered most. Unfortunately, that is exactly when I felt abandoned.
I have been a customer of Die Bayerische since moving to Germany more than two years ago. I deliberately chose ZAHN Prestige, their highest-tier dental insurance, because I believed it would provide real financial protection if I ever needed expensive dental treatment.
For more than two years, I paid my premiums without fail.
Routine professional teeth cleanings were reimbursed without any issues. However, covering a routine cleaning is not why I chose the highest-tier dental insurance. I bought it for the day I might need treatment costing several thousand euros. Unfortunately, that was exactly the moment my experience changed completely.
When I submitted my claim for a bridge, the process became one of the most frustrating customer experiences I have had in Germany.
Throughout the claims process, I repeatedly provided every document requested from me. I obtained treatment records from my German dentist, records from my previous dentist in North Macedonia, X-rays, treatment histories, health insurance documentation, and every additional document requested. Each time I believed the documentation was complete, I was asked to provide more information. From my perspective, the process became unnecessarily long, stressful and exhausting.
My German dentist even provided a written statement confirming that my first appointment was for acute pain treatment only and that no bridge treatment had been planned or discussed at that time. According to my dentist, the bridge became necessary much later, after I was already insured. Nevertheless, my claim was rejected.
As the matter became increasingly complex, I instructed a lawyer to represent me. My lawyer formally challenged Die Bayerische's interpretation of the insurance conditions and submitted detailed legal arguments together with supporting documentation. Despite this, Die Bayerische reviewed the case again and informed my lawyer that they were maintaining their original decision because they considered that no new information had been provided.
What made the experience even more disappointing was the customer service.
In my experience, several interactions with customer support were dismissive and unhelpful. As an international customer, I politely asked on several occasions whether I could speak with an English-speaking representative because the discussion involved complex insurance conditions, medical documentation and legal issues. I was told that I had to communicate in German.
I completely understand that I live in Germany, and I am actively learning German. However, Germany is home to many international residents and expats. For a company selling complex insurance products, I believe it is reasonable to expect at least some support in English when customers are dealing with important contractual and medical matters.
What disappointed me most was not only the outcome, but the entire process. Instead of feeling protected by my insurance, I felt that I had to spend months collecting documents from two countries, repeatedly responding to requests, obtaining additional statements from my dentist, and ultimately hiring a lawyer simply to have my position properly represented.
Insurance demonstrates its true value when customers need it most. Based on my personal experience, I did not feel supported when facing an expensive treatment, despite paying for Die Bayerische's highest-tier dental insurance for more than two years, which increased after 2 years from 37 Euros to 44 Euros. Make the sense make sense!
The legal dispute is still ongoing, and I will update this review once the matter has been finally resolved.
Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend Die Bayerische. Stay away from them!
