Be extremely careful with the fees…

Be extremely careful with the fees charged by this company.

I was charged an $80 fee after a missed/delayed payment on a small loan. Under Alberta law, the maximum normal cost of borrowing for a payday loan is $14 per $100 borrowed. That means on a $300 payday loan, the maximum normal borrowing charge is $42.

Alberta law does allow certain additional charges after a default, including limited interest and a one-time fee for a dishonoured payment, but that is very different from simply adding an $80 missed-payment charge.

When I challenged the $80 fee and brought up Alberta’s lending laws, the company immediately waived the entire charge.

I have also been charged similar amounts previously, so I am reporting the matter to Service Alberta and asking them to review the previous fees as well.

Anyone using this company should carefully check their loan agreement and every fee added to their balance. Keep screenshots and payment records and report questionable charges to Service Alberta.
