My partner and I are young travellers…
My partner and I are young travellers in our late 20s, we bought the 4-day-pass and we do not find NY Pass necessary at all. The main reason that we have decided to take on the NY pass is because we would like to avoid queues getting tickets on the spot. The truth is that NY pass does not allow you to do that in most places. Even with NY pass, we have to queue to get tickets in most places, this includes 9/11 museum, which is more than an hour queue for us outside in the cold. What I would actually recommend is to figure out the places you want to go in advance and get the tickets online through individual websites. With that, you actually get immediate access into places. Most touristy places have their own websites and allow you to buy tickets online.
Second thing to note is that NY pass only allows you to have the most basic access to places. For example, you only get to the common garden area under the Statue of Liberty with NY pass, which offer you suboptimal view of the statue with plenty of crowds. However, if you get to the website itself, with a few extra dollars, you get pedestal access and it actually allows you to have a proper view of the statue on the pedestal and less crowd! Same thing with the museums, in most museums, you get the basic access and have to pay extra for the additional exhibition, which in my opinion is worth the extra few dollars but not accessible with NY pass. So we had to go back to the ticketing queue again to get the extra access which wasted our time.
Third thing to remember is that no matter how great your planning is, it’s hard to beat the NY pass system. NY pass indeed does offer a lot of places for you to visit and it is true that if you manage to visit all or even just half of the places, you will save a lot of money, like a lot. However, the actual fact is that you won’t be able to cover all the places if you want to spend quality time in each spot. We considered ourselves pretty fast-paced young travellers and we have planned everything prior to going to maximize the pass. But we realised that there are usually so much to see in one spot that it is impossible to cover everything. For example, you could easily spend one whole day in MET museum and there is still so much more to see and explore there. So, the bottom line is that if you want to maximise the NY pass, you will have to do a lot of touch and go tour in most places and I don’t think that’s worth it if you have travelled a long way like us to visit these places.
One last thing for me is that NY Pass does not offer the access to One World Observotory. Having also visited the top of the rock and Empire State Building offered in NY Pass, in my opinion, One World has the best experience and view of the city, a definite must do in NY. Unfortunately, this is not included in NY pass, which is a huge disappointment for me.
So overall, don’t bother getting the NY pass. You can easily plan your trip by yourself by visiting individual websites online and it will actually save you more time. In terms of saving money, you really won’t because at the end of day, you won’t cover everything in NY pass. That’s it, good luck and have fun in NY everyone!
