Catriona McGregor hat dies geteiltI had the pleasure of joining the Lawyers Weekly Corporate Counsel Summit this week, where the central theme across all sessions was the use of AI in legal teams. During our panel discussion, we focused on legal resourcing and capabilities. I was joined by Paul Cowling of Lawyers On Demand and Zoë Hibbard of Harvey as we explored the structure of the legal team of the future and the skills that lawyers need to develop as AI continues to scale. I shared my perspective on the key capabilities that define a good in-house lawyer: - Commercial and Strategic Acumen: A deep understanding of the business landscape to transition from a support function to a strategic partner. - AI Fluency and Judgment: Mastering AI tools for efficiency while maintaining essential human judgment and accountability for the output. - Bandwidth and Stakeholder Mastery: The ability and confidence to manage expectations and prioritize work that delivers significant commercial impact. - Culture and Leadership: Cultivating a strong culture and driving results within a modern, flexible, and hybrid environment. I also had the privilege of joining a small group of General Counsels for a round table discussion lunch, where we shared insights on our respective stages on the AI journey. It was really interesting to hear everyone's different experiences, tips and use cases. I felt very energised at the end of the day and motivated to take bigger AI leaps in our legal function! With AI evolving rapidly from something that is 'now being permitted' to 'now expected,' it is evident that the rules are being rewritten in real time. It is exciting to be part of the leadership cohort in this current evolution of the in-house legal team. It’s been an energising few days of collaboration and connection. I have had the opportunity to get to know the U.S. Legal team members, as well as hear from business leaders about the Group’s products and strategic direction. It has deepened my understanding of the CoStar products and its focus on data and innovation. With CoStar’s investment, scale, and focus, the opportunities ahead for Domain are super exciting. Thank you to Gene Boxer for bringing the team together and inviting me along to listen, share and build for what’s next.Catriona McGregor hat dies geteiltOver the past few days, I had the privilege of hosting our U.S. Legal team to focus on strategies for protecting CoStar’s data and intellectual property assets and supporting the integration of Matterport 3D spaces and AI to advance CoStar Group’s next generation of data innovation. Our in-depth sessions featured updates from business leaders who provided insights into the latest content development approaches, marketplace monetization plans, our robust technology platform, and insights for building data products. We toured our new Research and Technology campus under construction in Richmond, VA, which underscores our dedication to collaboration, innovation, and ongoing professional growth. We concluded our meetings with comprehensive discussions about the: · evolving structure of our legal organization to enhance support across our operating businesses, · development of a legal operations center of excellence (COE), and · expanding career development opportunities within our team. Above all, these sessions enabled meaningful engagement as we continue to develop our Legal “Dream Team”!

I am really looking forward to day 2 tomorrow and I am grateful for the opportunity to speak about privacy reform - a (slowly) evolving area of law in a fast changing world where data collection, usage and commercialisation is becoming the business and consumer norm. Catriona McGregor hat dies geteiltFor me, January is always a time to reflect on the year that has gone and to set myself goals for the year ahead. I love that feeling of a fresh new year to map out achievements and commit to plans for the year. As I have talked about on LinkedIn before, I love to run (albeit, slowly!) and often take part in trail running events. I discussed my running goals with James Hall in an article published by The Australian Financial Review at the beginning of the year. In an exciting update since that article was published, I have just heard that I have secured a place in the lottery to run in the UTMB (OCC) race in August this year. The OCC is the baby sister race to the main UTMB 100 mile event (which I am not doing!!) but it is still a big challenge of 55km and 3,425 meters of positive elevation gain starting in Switzerland and crossing the Franco Swiss border to end in Chamonix in France. It will be my first race where I have to bring my passport to cross mountain ranges!! Time to start working on that training plan for 2025! AFR Article: https://lnkd.in/gW7fpg4P

Catriona McGregor hat dies geteiltI was grateful to be acknowledged and spotlighted by McCullough Robertson in the Year 101: Women in Law. In 2018, Australia marked a momentous milestone for the Australian legal industry – a century of women practising law in the majority of Australian states. A few years have ticked by since that 100 year milestone and there's still more to be done as demonstrated by these few recent stats: * 29% of leaders (principals/partners) in Australian law firms are female, as opposed to 54% male. * 36% of women lawyers are admitted for 15 years or more of practise, as opposed to 51% for men. * 55% reduction in women's earnings is observed, on average, in the first five years of parenthood as opposed to no change for men. The Year 101: Women in Law is a campaign that celebrates the legacy created by the determination and passion of women in the legal industry and highlights where we still need to do more. The campaign is not just a reflection of the past; it's an opportunity for women within the legal industry to share their stories, anecdotes, and tributes. It honours the legacy that we're creating and is aimed at inspiring future generations of women in law. I was humbled to be part of the campaign and took great pride in sharing it with my children when it was published. I hope to be an inspiration to them as a working lawyer Mum and to other young women coming up through the legal profession. Catriona McGregor hat dies geteiltI had the opportunity to speak at the Lawyers Weekly Partner Summit today alongside fellow General Counsels and Heads of Legal, Elizabeth Briggs, Johanna O'Rourke and David Vallance and hosted by Julia Banks. Our focus was on "How to make sure you're the chosen external firm and winning contracts." Delving into the key attributes we value in external law firm providers, our discussion emphasised the factors that influence our decision-making processes and what makes us go back to certain firms and partners with repeat instructions. Small things can go a long way like really getting to know a client's business and who the key internal stakeholders are (beyond the instructing GC) and providing advice in a format that meets the needs of the client and minimises the effort required for internal re-use . Also, ensuring that fees represent good value for the client (irrespective of what the WIP on the clock says). We also spoke of the importance of mental health and well being for our profession and the role that both instructing GC's and Partners have to manage expectations and deadlines to ensure that they are achievable without the need for excessive hours. Thanks to Lawyers Weekly for the opportunity to be on the panel and for providing the valuable platform for Partners and Inhouse professionals to exchange insights and perspectives as industry peers.

A year ago Domain became part of CoStar Group. Since then we've rolled Matterport out across 1,700+ suburbs, built a field research and property photography capability from nothing, and prepared CoStar's commercial platform for its Australian launch later this year. This building is where those teams now sit together. A year ago most people assumed Australian property had one player and the outcome was settled. That's no longer the view. The market now recognises genuine competition, and with it a return to real innovation for agents, vendors and property seekers. A steady drumbeat of new products, strong audience growth, and now this headquarters all point the same way. We're here for the long term and we’re thinking big. 56 partners from across the property industry brought this to life. Seven months from commitment to moving in, on more than 6,000 square metres, including connecting four post-tensioned concrete floors into a single contiguous space. We thought big and acted fast. Thank you to all of them, and to our own team, who moved a business while running one. In particular, the fantastic cross functional team Nadia O'Dea, Angie Mellgren, Nicole Simon, Marni Blight and Penny Sandercock, who worked globally and locally, to pulled off the impossible on an impossible timeline! For twelve years my marathons were mostly about surviving. 2014: 5:17 2018: 4:44 Get to the line. Don't fall apart. Prove I still can. Sunday's TCS Sydney Marathon felt different. For the first time, I turned up to race one. Sub 4 was the target. Just before the start I got chatting to a woman in a moon boot. Fractured foot. She told me, "I'm going to race it and finish." Not just finish. Race it. That stayed with me. My own plan had already taken a few hits. A bone-stress scare three weeks out. A long, nervous taper. A stitch at 27km that never left. Legs starting to go beyond 33km. But not once did I wonder whether I'd finish. That question had already been answered. Two years of triathlon had given me that confidence. So all my energy could go into how I finished. Control the early kilometres. Keep the nutrition going. Don't chase people. Manage the hills. Save something for when it matters. The last 700 metres were the fastest I ran all day. I've felt something very similar on a major digital release recently. There were plenty of doubts around us about whether we'd make go-live. Being close enough to the work gave me confidence that we would. That meant my energy could go somewhere else. Would the team be ready? Would the business see value from day one? Would we just go live, or would we go live well? Maybe that's the shift I've noticed in both. Once you genuinely believe you can finish, you start thinking differently about how you finish. 40+ minutes faster than my last marathon. I missed sub 4 by 1 minute 46 seconds. The watch had paused at every aid station. The race clock hadn't. Sub 4 can wait. Tomorrow.” Our small but mighty Ops team had already flown out weeks earlier. Now we had to crack the regulatory structure for launching Revolut (a multi-currency e-money institution, was a rare thing in the States). No idea how long it would take. Whole team, on the ground, around the clock. 2 weeks later & a model good enough to get us to launch. Baby steps. 8 years on, and today Revolut has obtained conditional OCC approval for a US national bank charter. One major step closer to giving Americans the full Revolut experience. Congrats to all past and current colleagues who have gotten us to this stage - it’s been a huge push from so many! Now, back to work! 🇺🇸

The latest Australia edition of The Legal Industry Reviews has now been published. This edition features an insightful article by HFW Partner Ruth Dawes and Knowledge Counsel Kate Fisher, detailing the implications of a recent NSW Court of Appeal landmark ruling, which confirms the need to assess climate change impacts in major project approvals at both a local and global level. This decision stems from a community challenge to the Independent Planning Commission’s approval of the Mount Pleasant coal mine expansion. While some environmental impacts were considered, the Court found that others were insufficiently addressed, setting a precedent for more fulsome assessment of the adverse impacts of climate change in future developments. The decision has potential ramifications for the preparation of environmental impact statements in NSW and potentially more broadly noting that the statutory considerations for environmental impact assessment vary within Australia and abroad.
