WATCH OUT for the agent at the counter…
WATCH OUT for the agent at the counter making selections for you on whether your charge will be in local currency or your own! They are not allowed to do this, as Visa rules state that the consumer must be shown the choice between being charged in local currency but have clearly been instructed to select it for you. When paying for the damage deductible of nearly $5,000 the agent selected USD on the screen when it showed up for me to select even though I would have picked Euros, and this cost me an additional $300 in conversion fees. The selection is for the consumer to make but they will sneakily try to make it for you, watch out for this. Their insurance is a scam as well, be sure to decline their CDW and use a credit card that has rental car insurance.
Waiting for compliant response
I was initially told that my complaint would receive a response within a maximum of 15 working days. After hearing nothing, I called on the 16th working day and was simply told I should receive a response within the next 24 hours.
Our rental in Ireland completely disrupted what should have been a relaxing holiday. The Nissan Juke supplied by Hertz developed a gearbox fault and was unsafe to drive. Despite repeatedly explaining this, customer support initially expected us to drive it on the motorway to Shannon Airport.
Hertz instead sent a third-party engineer who merely cleared the fault codes before telling us to continue our journey. Thankfully, we insisted on a test drive, where the fault immediately returned. We then spent over 2 and a half hours dealing with contradictory instructions from customer support before eventually being taken to Shannon Airport by the recovery company to collect a replacement vehicle.
The replacement car was described as an "upgrade", but it was much larger than the vehicle we had booked and unsuitable for the narrow rural roads we were travelling on. To make matters worse, the following day the tyre pressure warning came on. An AA technician found the rear tyre had only a temporary repair plug that was slowly leaking, despite us having several days remaining on the rental.
Between the breakdown, poor communication, replacement process, and second vehicle issue, we lost over four hours of our holiday and had to cancel a significant part of our itinerary. We also incurred additional fuel, transport and toll costs.
To top it all off, there are unexplained transactions on my credit card that Hertz has yet to explain.
A very disappointing experience from start to finish. I'm now waiting to see whether Hertz resolves the complaint fairly.

I rang today to hire a van the girl on the phone told me there was one available at dublin airport so I drove 40 minutes to get there and waited nearly 30 minutes in the queue only to be told they have none available , absolute joke of a company

I rented a car on **22 June** (Confirmation: **L6160473729**) and paid an advance deposit that should have been refunded after I returned the vehicle. I returned the car with a **full tank of fuel** and even paid the **road toll charges using my own card**.
Despite this, my deposit has still not been refunded. I have contacted the company several times by email, but they have completely ignored my messages and have not provided any update or explanation.
This level of customer service is extremely disappointing. Keeping a customer's money while failing to respond to emails is unacceptable. I expect my refund to be processed immediately. If this issue is not resolved promptly, I will have no option but to escalate the matter to the relevant consumer protection authorities and continue sharing my experience publicly.
I hope the company takes responsibility and resolves this matter without any further delay.
Thank-you very much

Hertz poor service ruined our day
I am writing in to review the new Hertz 24/7 service that allows people to rent cars by the hour. I had booked a car this morning to take a three hour morning trip with my family. I did this before and I know how to use the app. However, this time when I arrived at the car the app would not allow me to start the rental and get into the car despite telling me that I had the car reserved at 8 am. I wanted to call for help, but guess what? They have no phone service available to get help. Instead they claim to offer 24/7 support through a whatsapp chat. I texted their WhatsApp from two separate numbers repeatedly to get help. An hour later I haven't heard back. We had to abandon our plan for the day and my family is extremely disappointed. What terrible service. I am extremely frustrated and angry and have emailed the company to complain. If you want an hourly car service don't use Hertz!!

I am going to make an official complaint to the car hire association about Hertz this company is an absolute scam and think they can get away with treating customers/ tourists with total disregard for the law and regulations!! I am also going to go to the media to get them to investigate how this company is operating I have been waiting now a month with several mails sent to them ( no reply) but put a reply on here blaming bank ; My bank I trust 100% and said they are not to blame; This is the second time this year has happened and last time was at the same desk as hertz at cork airport but under another car company name : They are still holding over €2300. on my bank card since 23 May which is actually causing me issues as can’t use my card so will be pursuing damages for distress: Been reading reviews on here and other platforms and this seems like a regular occurrence with people ;

Initially my experience was good with the reception staff at the desk being friendly and professional.
Unfortunately when I picked up my vehicle the tank wasn’t full, the electrics on the driver’s side door didn’t work and there was a constant alarm going off when the car was idling.
When returning the car I was accused of damaging the windscreen and the operative showed me pictures which were supposedly taken immediately before my pick up. As such he said unless I could prove that the chip was there before my departure I would be charged for a new windscreen. He would not accept my version of events stating that I hadn’t caused the damage. Fortunately for me I had taken pictures of the car myself which showed the windscreen chip clearly so Hertz had no alternative but to back down. Had I not taken my own photos I would have had no defence and would have been expected to pay for a new windscreen.
Very disappointing and it felt as though Hertz were being very disingenuous in pursuing their claim.

Worst red tape imaginable they want €2,500 on a credit card in advance before you even look at a hire car, that rules out most people, the more he talked the more insufferable he was David is d a born conman. Go to enterprise steer well clear of hertz money grabbing chancers.
Hertz Dublin Airport
Airport staff were rude and not helpful in explaining their rules. if you don't require full insurance, one has to provide a letter of coverage . they are 50% more expensive thn competitors. suggest to comparison shop.

Very disappointing experience with…
Very disappointing experience with Hertz at Dublin Airport.
Before arriving, I contacted Hertz directly and was clearly informed by email that, as a 24-year-old customer, I would be able to rent a vehicle using a bank-issued debit card, provided I accepted their Super Cover insurance. Based on this written confirmation, I booked my trip and arrived expecting no issues.
However, when I reached the rental desk, I was refused the vehicle outright because I only had a Revolut debit card. This was extremely frustrating, as Revolut is a fully licensed bank and my card is a standard Visa debit card issued in my own name.
The most disappointing part was the inconsistency between what customer service told me in writing and what was enforced at the counter. I relied on Hertz's official email confirmation and was left stranded at the airport with no car despite following the instructions provided.
If Hertz does not accept Revolut debit cards, this should be stated clearly and consistently by all customer service representatives. Providing inaccurate information caused significant inconvenience and unnecessary stress.
I expected much better communication and customer service from a global company like Hertz.
Also very rude
Shannon Airport Hertz Car Rental
Date 17 May 2026
I am writing regarding the allegation made when we returned our Hertz rental vehicle to your Shannon location this weekend.
At the time of return, we were informed that cigarette ash had been found in the car. We would like to state clearly that neither of us smoked in the vehicle at any point during the hire period. There was reportedly no smell of cigarettes in the car, only what was described as ash.
This accusation is particularly upsetting given that my partner is a lung cancer survivor and has only one lung remaining. Smoking is not part of our lives, and we would never smoke in a hired vehicle.
We respectfully ask that this matter be reviewed carefully before any charges or penalties are considered. It is entirely possible that the residue identified was unrelated to cigarette use or may have been present prior to our hire.
We took good care of the vehicle throughout the rental period and returned it in good condition. We would appreciate written confirmation that no unfair charges will be applied to our account, or alternatively, full evidence supporting any claim being made.
We look forward to your response and to resolving this issue
Never ever use this dishonest company!
I made an online booking with Thrifties before my flight to Ireland. I went to the desk at the airport with the sign Thrifties/Hertz and gave the man the booking number with Thrifties. He started the procedure by saying they didn't have any VW Polo that I had requested. He tried to persuade me to take a car from a more expensive category. When I said no to that I decided for a Renault Clio. You couldn't choose the full insurance on internet he said, which I was quite sure I had done on Thrifties.
"Do you want to fill up with petrol or return it empty" was next question. He said I could choose to pay for a full tank now, and if I returned the tank full I would be refunded. I filled up the tank before returning the car and I still haven't got a refund.
When I was about to pay for the rental it turned out he had booked it with Hertz instead of Thrifties, not saying a word about it. When I protested and said it became more expensive than the booking I had made with Thrifties, he gave me some BS that "Thrifties are not so transparent with all costs".
I will never ever use Hertz again and dissuade everyone from using them! It seems they try to cheat you if they can!
Very poor & costly experience that…
Very poor & costly experience that ended up 3 times the quoted rates. We took a single class upgrade. Mistake. The car had a hole in the driver side mat and overall was a very used vehicle. It was supposed to be an upgrade. The brakes were grinding at times. Drivers side wiper did not clean properly and we had a lot of rain. Worse than that, the automated braking kicked in twice in heavy rain conditions almost causing an accident both times. Very dangerous. When we agreed to an upgrade, they did NOT mention any other cost, but added supplemental insurance without a mention when we explicitly presented all required insurance coverage. At 6am after a long flight you dont always notice. After one day when we noticed we contacted customer service immediately. They claimed he explained it. This is a blatant lie. Booking.com punted - did not help at all. They all were unethical and are not to be trusted. Very unhappy customer.
Cork Airport
I received my car from Cork Airport. The man who handed the keys over was lovely, his name began with an F, I should have got him to spell it for me! It was very late and he walked us outside to point us in the right direction. Fantastic service from him he deserves a special treat.
I'm still waiting to hear back from customer service as to when I'll get my deposit back, which isn't brilliant. Also, the car supposedly had some damage on it, but I couldn't see any damage which is strange and perhaps a bit of a red flag. I'll change my review if this affects my deposit in any way.
Never again - Be Warned
As a corporate Hertz customer for over 20 years I will not be using them ever again. Recently I rented a car for 7 days at Alicante airport, (collected around 9pm it was dark) paid top dollar compared to others there - expecting reasonable treatment. I discovered on the evening of day 6 that the inside of the right front tyre was dangerously bald, inner threads exposed with a blowout highly likely.. I decided to hold on to the car as returning to airport next day on regional road. On arrival, a lady came over to inspect the car as usual. She pointed out some tiny scratches on the right rear door handle (which I did not see or cause) and said that that the car was thoroughly inspected prior to being handed out and that there was no damage then. She said that I was liable for them and said that would cost €132. I then pointed out the right front tyre and while she looked amazed, shrugged it off and said that she would report the matter. Point is, my wife and I could have been killed on the A-7 motorway in the middle of nowhere but yet Hertz were only interested in the tiny scratches, and despite my writing a lengthy explanatory letter to customer service they made no mention of the dangerous tyre and refused to make any allowance for my grievance. Maybe I was liable for the minor damage (which I paid) but their intransigent attitude was a total put off. Never again - be warned.

Car Rental Beware… My wife and I…
Car Rental Beware… My wife and I recently visited Ireland and rented a car from Hertz. The salesperson was friendly and suggested an upgrade to improve fuel economy. We asked about the added cost and were told it was free.
Back in Canada, we discovered a €100 charge for the upgrade. We have been unable to reach the salesperson, and customer service refuses a refund because we signed the almost unreadable agreement. I advised at the counter that I didn’t have my reading glasses and could barely read the small print; the salesperson directed me where to initial and sign without pointing out any upgrade charge. This appears to be a clear mistake by the salesperson, and it has now become an issue of misrepresentation.
I’m asking Hertz to correct this error and make it right.
Response to Hertz (13 May 2026)
Hello Hertz—let’s get a few facts straight.
There is no misunderstanding on our part. Your reply reads as though your sales representative is the only honest party in this complaint. By implication, Hertz is suggesting that we are being dishonest. That accusation is unacceptable.
Your department was not present for the conversation at the counter. Your sales representative made a clear mistake. The appropriate response now is to make amends and move on - not to question our integrity. If you need context, you can also review the volume of similar feedback posted online.
We are not confused, “out to lunch,” or imagining details. When your representative states the upgrade is FREE, we reasonably expect it to be free. Adding an upgrade charge after representing it as free is unacceptable and in very poor taste.
The saying is, “the customer is usually right.” Hertz seems to have forgotten that. When a customer raises a complaint like this, the default should be to resolve it - especially when the charge contradicts what your own representative said. Hertz needs to correct this by refunding the €100 upgrade charge to our bill immediately.
This disagreement has now become an issue of honesty and integrity. - Come on Hertz, you can do this!

The worst expérience ever…
The worst expérience ever…
- upgrade overcost forced (as the car we had reserved (5008) was replace by another where the seat do not fold) > privé x 2
- supercover not asked but invoiced (« supercover » only named as it did not work when we needed it , stuck in the mud at the roadside
- breakdown call invoiced 250 euros even if we cancelled it a minute layer (with the breakdown service and the rental company's assistance)
Go next door !!
