North and South India tours
I completed a tour of North and South India with G Adventures in the winter of 2025. I have completed many tours with this company and have always been satisfied. I find the itineraries well planned and the tour guides to be charming and well trained.
However during my last tour the itinerary had us going through Varanasi during the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela which had 45 million people in attendance. G itinerary had us taking an overnight train with bunks reserved, however the tour guide informed us two days before we were due to take the train, that there were deaths from stampede's in the train station and that we could not reasonably expect to get our reserved bunks. While we did have a reservation, if someone was in our bunk, train personnel were very unlikely to ask them to move.
Our CEO said if we choose to take a flight G would kindly offer transportation to and from the airport, but the choice and the cost were on us.
Frightened, the entire group opted to buy flights.
Upon my return home, I contacted G and asked why they had not known about the world event, and had not made an itinerary that would work, or at least reimburse us for the flights. They not only denied responsibility for the poor itinerary, they also made comments about the CEO and the travellers making it sound like this was "on us". There was absolutely no mention or apology for an unworkable itinerary.
There was zero responsibility falling on G - in their response they were clear that this was definitely on the travellers as "the travellers chose to fly", G had booked us "reservations" (on the train) we just "chose" not to use them, according to G.
The make of a company rests not only on how they perform when things go well, but how they own up when they've made an error. G will take zero responsibility for a poorly planned itinerary, even though....that is why you pay for a "professional" to make an itinerary that works.
I highly recommend trying a different company, Intrepid has almost the exact same itineraries, slightly cheaper prices, and perhaps they have stronger morals?
If you do go with G, do your homework to make sure the itinerary is safe and it accommodates for any on going world events that will affect your trip. Because G can't be bothered.
I'd like my money back for the train reservation G, since that was "your choice" and was not doable.
**May 12 update: in response to your email below G, please reread my review. I already sent a request to your solutions counter and got a response from you - it was captured in my original review: you said this was all on me and my fellow travellers.
