fix(minimald): answer a create over the re-read fact and place the daemon through a socket unit - #3026
Fixes two placement problems with the same unit: the first deny-all host_ip create after a daemon start was told the box is refused (gominimal/inbox#1205), and on SELinux hosts the placement unit never placed a restarted daemon (gominimal/inbox#1206). One PR, one commit per change, plus a merge of main.
Root cause
#1205: the create reply answered from the stale start-up fact
Proven from code.
On main, create_session_rpc (crates/minimald/src/rpc.rs) copied host_ip_enforcement_fact() and built classifier_advisory and host_ip_enforcement from it before it called the manager. The manager's create (create_host_ip_fact, box_manager.rs, added in T131 — A native host-address box's probe and launch refusal read the box's own state #2965) re-reads the host when the held fact is ProbeUnreadable. So the reply still carried the stale fact's advisory even when the re-read had just found that the host decides per box. The new test fails on main with the exact advisory from the issue (...so it refuses to start the box ... the classifier table's effect could not be read...).
At f6fcbab (the build Karl ran) things were worse: decide_now ran at main.rs:986, before the bind at line 1316. The path unit fires when the socket is created, so the start-up reading always came before placement. That was not a race, it happened on every start. T131 — A native host-address box's probe and launch refusal read the box's own state #2965 moved the reading to after the bind. That turned it into a race the reading still almost always loses.
Missing log lines: proven from code, already fixed on main by #2965. At f6fcbab the start-up reading (main.rs:986) ran before logger.activate (main.rs:1095). Until activate, the file layer is an inert reload::Layer(None) (logging.rs), and a detached daemon's console is /dev/null. So the probe's read the classifier table's effect on this host line, the because, and the start line went nowhere. On main the reading runs after the bind, and the bind comes after activate, so those lines reach minimald.log. No change was needed here.
Hypothesis, not proven. The issue says the first deny-all box "was refused". The client only prints the advisory; it never refuses (print_classifier_advisory). The launch re-reads the host and refuses a deny-all box only when the box is placed and its own fresh read gives a probe cause (refused_unenforced_host_address_box). So what Karl saw was most likely the stale advisory text, not a refusal by the launch. See also "For Karl" below.
#1206: systemd may not watch a socket under the account's home
Proven from the AVC in the issue, together with the unit text.minimald-place.path used PathChanged=<ssh.sock>. On SELinux, init_t is denied watch on a gconf_home_tsock_file. The first placement only worked because, before the socket existed, systemd was watching the parent directory.
Fix
feat: lifecycle hooks #1205 (fix(minimald)): the create reply states the fact its own create's gate read. create_host_ip_fact re-reads the host when the stored fact is ProbeUnreadable, and the manager returns that fact with the box's id (create_box_reporting_fact), so the reply never reads the global fact again after another create or launch may have refreshed it. If the re-read itself fails, the gate and the reply both use the stored fact. A host where the re-read still cannot read the table keeps the advisory. The launch still refuses a box it places as before, so enforcement is not weakened.
docs: update readme banner to current brand card #1206 (fix(classifier)): min finalize-install now installs minimald-place.socket instead of the path pair. It is a systemd-held socket at /run/minimald-place.sock with SocketUser=<operator>, SocketMode=0600 and Accept=yes. Each connection starts the template minimald-place@.service, which runs the step's --place-listener as root. That keeps the confused-deputy check: the placer finds the daemon among the holders of its listening socket and never takes a pid from the connection. After it binds, the daemon connects and waits up to 5 s for the placer to close the connection. That also takes its start-up reading after placement, which removes the feat: lifecycle hooks #1205 race at its source on hosts with the unit. The install removes the old path pair. An install that still carries the path pair reads as not done, so min finalize-install offers the upgrade. --undo and the install.sh uninstall advice disable only the units a host actually has, because systemctl refuses a whole call that names a missing unit. NET spec sub-requirement (placement unit) wording and docs/reference/cli-min.md are updated to match.
Follow-ups found by CI: the native e2e teardown failed once because an empty boxes/deny/filter-probe-<pid> leaf was left behind. The new teardown diagnostics (test(e2e)) found it. A daemon stopped in the middle of its start-up probe leaves that leaf, and the window is wider now that the reading runs after placement. --uninstall now rmdirs empty probe leaves only. A box's own leaf still stops the uninstall (fix(classifier): sweep the probe's leftover leaves, pinned in host_classifier_tree_installed). A comment fix from minimal-review is also included.
Install copy order (fix(classifier), Karl approved): the finalize block moved the new install-host-classifier.sh over /usr/local/lib/minimal/install-host-classifier.shbefore the step ran. A refused run (a ct-mark conflict, say) stops the block before the units, so the old boot and placement units stayed while the copy they run was already the refusing version, and the next reboot did not restore enforcement. The block now keeps the previous copy as install-host-classifier.sh.prev, moves the new one in, and runs it. On success the kept copy is removed. On failure the previous copy goes back (on a first install the new copy is removed) and the block exits with the step's status, so the copy, the units and the tree record stay as they were. The step still runs from its installed path, so the hint in its refusal (built from $0) names a file that exists.
Item 3 of the #1206 brief, the re-read covering the window after a restart: an unplaced daemon reads ProbeUnreadable, which is exactly the cause the create re-reads on. The rpc test below covers both the case where the re-read decides and the case where it stays unreadable.

Tests
rpc::tests::deny_all_create_over_a_stale_unreadable_fact_answers_the_reread (new): with a held ProbeUnreadable fact, a deny-all host_ip create gets no advisory and per_box when the re-read decides, and gets the probe advisory and no enforcement value when the re-read stays inconclusive. Fails on main with the issue's advisory text.

cmd::finalize_install::tests::a_refused_classifier_step_keeps_the_installed_copy_and_units (new): runs the real classifier block under a scratch root with the step stubbed and a systemctl stub. A refusing step exits with its status and leaves the previous copy, the previous units, no record, no .new/.prev, and no systemctl call; a refused first install leaves no copy; an installing step replaces the copy and goes on to the units.
scripts/install_test.sh: a new case for an uninstall of the socket-pair layout (the remedy disables only the units the host has). The path-unit layout case is kept.

For Karl
Not verified on SELinux. I have no SELinux host here. Please run min finalize-install on the Bazzite box, then min stop and min ls, and check /proc/$(pgrep -x minimald)/cgroup and journalctl -u 'minimald-place@*'. Connecting to an init_t-created socket in /run is ordinary socket activation, but it has not been tested here.
An unplaced daemon's deny-all box runs unenforced at launch, while the advisory says it is refused.refused_unenforced_host_address_box refuses natively only a placed deny-all box (the "A2 ruling" in its doc). An unplaced daemon cannot place a leaf, so its deny-all box runs unenforced. advisory_text and Cause::host_ip_box_outcome both say such a box is refused. I did not change the ruling. Which side is right is your decision.
The NET spec sub-requirement for the placement unit changed wording. Please review it, since spec-ears was not run.
…e's re-read
The create reply read the classifier fact before the manager's create
re-read it. A daemon whose start-up probe ran before the placement unit
moved it into its leaf holds a ProbeUnreadable fact, so a deny-all
host_ip create was told the box is refused even when the re-read had
just found the host decides per box. The reply now reads the fact after
the create, so it carries the re-read's state. A host that still cannot
read the table keeps the advisory, and the launch's own refusal is
unchanged.

…on its socket
minimald-place.path watched the daemon's ssh.sock with inotify. On an
SELinux-enforcing host the policy denies systemd a watch on a sock_file
under the account's home, so after the first start no daemon start was
placed, and the path unit still read active.
min finalize-install now installs minimald-place.socket, a socket systemd
holds at /run/minimald-place.sock for the delegated account, and the
template minimald-place@.service, which runs the step's --place-listener
for each connection. The daemon connects once its listener is bound and
waits up to five seconds for the placer to close the connection, so its
start-up reading is taken after the placement. The placer still finds
the daemon from the holders of its listening socket, never from the
connection. The install removes the earlier path pair, an install that
still carries it is not done, and --undo and the uninstall advice
disable only the units a host carries.

min finalize-install --show now names a running daemon that is not in

--pid. The daemon's start line records daemon_placed, and a native
daemon outside its leaf on a host whose tree is installed logs its own

Walkthrough
Linux classifier placement now uses a systemd socket unit and templated service. The daemon requests placement after binding its listener, and installation can detect and correct an unplaced daemon. Session creation reads the host enforcement fact a
8000
fter the manager creates the session.
The daemon requests placement after binding its listener. The request API reports whether a placer is unavailable, answers, or fails to answer in time. Logs and documentation describe the socket-based placement flow.
Install and detect placement crates/minimal/src/cmd/finalize_install.rs, crates/minimal/src/resolver.rs
The installer configures the socket unit and accepting service, removes legacy path-unit files, and checks for an unplaced daemon. When the classifier is otherwise installed, it can generate a PID-specific placement step. The install script restores the prior classifier copy or removes the new copy if the placement step fails.
Unit removal and operational updates crates/minimal/src/resolver.rs, scripts/install.sh, scripts/install_test.sh, scripts/session-e2e.sh, scripts/install-host-classifier.sh
Removal and teardown handle the socket, service, and legacy units. Installer scripts update unit cleanup and remove empty probe directories under the deny subtree.
Read enforcement after session creation crates/minimald/src/rpc.rs, crates/minimald/src/rpc/tests.rs
Session creation reads the host enforcement fact after successful creation and derives the reply values from that fact. Tests cover decisive and inconclusive re-reads.

A daemon stopped in the middle of its classifier effect probe leaves its
empty boxes/deny/filter-probe-<pid> leaf behind, and the uninstall then
refused, as if a box still held the tree. The start-up reading now runs
after the placement, while the daemon is placed, so the probe makes its
leaf on every start and the window shows up in the native e2e teardown.
The uninstall now removes empty probe leaves with rmdir. A box's own
leaf still stops it.

Propagate socket shutdown to accepted placement services.
When Accept=yes creates an active minimald-place@<connection>.service, the cleanup paths stop only minimald-place.socket. Because the generated template has no stop-propagation relationship, that instance can remain active and retain its classifier leaf while the cleanup removes the template and classifier tree.
Add PartOf={PLACE_SYSTEMD_UNIT}.socket to the generated service template. This makes the existing socket stop in --undo, uninstall, and E2E teardown stop each accepted instance.

Return the manager’s host fact with the created session.
create_session uses its local host_ip_fact for the create gate, but CreateBox returns only the session ID. The RPC handler then reads the process-global fact. A concurrent host-address launch can replace that fact before the response is built, so classifier_advisory and host_ip_enforcement can describe another operation.
Return the manager-produced fact with the session ID and use it for both response fields. Preserve the existing stored-fact fallback when the create reread fails; propagating that error would change the established create contract.

min finalize-install --show took the daemon's pid from the instance lock
file's contents, which the daemon writes only as a debug aid and the
account can edit. A stale or edited pid could name the wrong process in
the --pid step. The pid is now the lock's holder as /proc/locks lists it
for the lock file's inode.

…remedy
`--show` read the classifier item as done once the unit files and their
wants links were there, so a placement socket that was installed but not
listening (a boot that dropped its job, or `systemctl stop`) read as done,
and an unplaced daemon's remedy was `--pid` alone: the next daemon start
was unplaced again (Bryan's review on #3026).
The item now reads whether the socket listens at PLACE_REQUEST_SOCKET; the
unit sets RemoveOnStop=yes, so the file is there exactly while it listens.
A stopped socket is its own state, remedied by `systemctl start
minimald-place.socket`; with an unplaced daemon as well, the block starts
the socket and then places the daemon with --pid. A host without
systemctl is owed no placer.

… a warning
systemd also closes a connection it will not serve (over the socket's
MaxConnections=), and a placer can exit without finding this daemon, so a
closed connection was logged as "the placement unit answered" while the
daemon stayed outside its leaf. Only the leaf says whether the request
placed it: info when it did, warn when it did not.

Replying to Bryan's review (#pullrequestreview-5791979064) point by point, with a retest on Karl's host pc. I've taken over this PR from the earlier agent.
pc is Bazzite 44 (Fedora atomic), SELinux enforcing, /var/home on btrfs, Tailscale 1.104.2 in iptables-nft mode. The retest ran at c35cdd22, via min finalize-install (egress step) run as root by Karl.
Before (2f17a015): systemd-analyze verify multi-user.target printed Found ordering cycle … Job minimald-place.socket/start deleted. After (c35cdd22): no cycle and no minimald line. A real reboot is still to come.
The lock file's st_dev is 0x3b and /proc/locks shows 00:24 for the same inode. With the socket stopped and the daemon restarted outside the slice, --show names it: "the running Minimal daemon (pid 926832) is not placed in its egress-enforcement cgroup…".
Reproduced at c35cdd22: with the socket stopped, the remedy was only install-host-classifier.sh --pid 926832. Now the item checks whether PLACE_REQUEST_SOCKET is listening (RemoveOnStop=yes makes the file's presence exact). "Socket not listening" is its own state, remedied by systemctl start minimald-place.socket, and with an unplaced daemon the block starts the socket and then runs --pid. Unit tests cover all four combinations, plus no-systemctl.
Nit: a connection dropped over MaxConnections logs as "Answered"
The daemon logs "placed this daemon in its classifier leaf" only when it's actually in its leaf. Otherwise it warns "closed this daemon's placement request without placing it".
Restart test at c35cdd22. Four times: min stop, then min session activate --network host_ip --deny-all-egress as the first request, then curl https://1.1.1.1 in the box. Every daemon was placed by minimald-place@… into minimald.slice/daemon, every box got a boxes/deny/<id> leaf, every connect was refused in 0 ms, and there were 0 AVCs.
cargo nextest run -p minimal -p minimald: 2327 passed and 7 failed. The same 7 fail at c35cdd22 without these commits, so they're host-dependent:
five netns_root_integration tests (they need root, and /tmp is nodev)
resolver::tests::the_answerer_facts_ride_beside_a_down_proxy_sibling (the live daemon holds the port)
box_runtime::tests::a_hook_launch_does_not_advise_unenforced_placement. This one reads the host's real /sys/fs/cgroup/minimald.slice, the same kind of leak as gominimal/inbox#1212. I'll file it separately, not in this PR.
Still to do: a real reboot of pc on this head (Karl has approved it). That will check that the tree, the table and the socket come back, and that the first daemon start after boot is placed.
Real reboot of pc on a8a41ac3: pass. This was the one check left from my comment above.
Setup: same egress install as above; nothing was placed by hand and no root step ran after the boot. The reboot also brought in a staged OS update, so this boot is Bazzite 45.20261104 (Fedora 45 base, kernel 7.2.15-ogc1.1.fc45). SELinux is enforcing.
No ordering cycle.journalctl -b has no ordering cycle / to break ordering line.
Boot unit ran.minimald-classifier.service started at 16:52:30 and finished with Result=success. It loaded inet minimal_class (sha256 98f551c0…, the same table as before the reboot) over Tailscale's connmark rules, with no refusal.
Tree is back./sys/fs/cgroup/minimald.slice has classifier-table and ct-mark-mask-0x30000000 again. Neither survives a reboot unless the unit recreates them.
Placement socket is listening.minimald-place.socket is active, and /run/minimald-place.sock was created at boot.
First daemon start after the boot is placed. No daemon ran until the first request: min session activate --network host_ip --deny-all-egress. That daemon (pid 13408) was placed by minimald-place@… within the same second: placed 13408 in /sys/fs/cgroup/minimald.slice/daemon (it holds …/ssh.sock).
First deny-all box is enforced. The box landed in leaf boxes/deny/01a1ae24…, and curl https://1.1.1.1 was refused in 0 ms.
No AVCs this boot.--show reports ✓ for deny-all egress and for the QUIC helper.
That completes the pc retest:
the boot cycle (fixed)
btrfs unplaced detection (works)
the socket is removed on stop
4/4 restarts placed
the real reboot
@norrietaylor, your five threads each have a fix commit and reply. They're confirmed above on a Fedora/btrfs/SELinux host. Could you take another look and resolve them if you agree? Bryan's two open items are fixed in 74a8523 and a8a41ac.
Filed the host-dependent a_hook_launch_does_not_advise_unenforced_placement failure I mentioned above as gominimal/inbox#1215. It predates this PR and isn't a blocker for it.

Scope matches the title and the PR body. Every hunk traces to the two inbox issues or to the listed follow-ups. Clobber none found: git log on the changed files shows only this branch's commits and the merge of main, and the rpc.rs hunk moves the fact read and removes nothing else. Correctness the create reply now reads the node fact after create_host_ip_fact, which is the only caller path that re-reads. The socket and template unit pair, the rollback in the classifier block, the install.sh remedy and the --undo loop read correctly. The earlier review points (ordering cycle, btrfs device match, RemoveOnStop=yes, shared constant) are fixed at this head. One new defect is in the --pid remedy: it leaves the guards that --place-listener carries, and the block can use --place-listener as written. The other three findings are about text and comments. Open the PR body asks Karl whether an unplaced daemon's deny-all box must be refused. refused_unenforced_host_address_box confirms the mismatch: placed is the box's placement, so that box runs unenforced while the advisory says it is refused. That text is older than this PR, and only the new comment is a finding here. Not checked I did not build or run tests. I did not run anything on systemd, SELinux or btrfs. gitleaks was not run, and a targeted search of the diff found no credential. No dependency file changed. repomap.md was not used.
Norrie's re-review of #3026:
- The remedy for a running daemon outside its leaf now runs the step's
--place-listener for the account's socket instead of --pid <pid>. It
finds the holder when the block runs, so a reused pid is never moved,
and it keeps the guards --pid lacks: a holder of another uid, or one
already under the slice, is left alone.
- Detection matches it: a lock holder whose cgroup is anywhere under the
tree (a box leaf among them), or cannot be read, is not reported as
unplaced (stands_in_tree).
- With both causes present, `--show` lists them on two lines instead of
one 47-word sentence; the JSON keeps them on one line.
- The create reply's comment and its test no longer say the launch
refuses a deny-all box an unplaced daemon starts; that box runs
unenforced.
- The placement-request doc states why the daemon connects to a socket
in /run, without narrating the path unit it replaced.

The foundry review of #3026: the create reply read the process-global
host-address fact after the manager's create returned, so another create
or launch that refreshed it in between could make the reply state a fact
its own create never saw. The manager's create now returns the fact its
gate read (create_host_ip_fact), the CreateBox message carries it back
on a oneshot, and the RPC handler states that fact through the new
create_box_reporting_fact. The existing create_box_with_spec and
create_fresh_box_with_spec keep their signatures.

Re-review at 4e7ed354: daemon placement and the create reply
Verdict: the round-one and round-two comments are addressed, with one fix still needed before approval. All nine of my comments are addressed at the head. The fix for my round-two high finding introduced one new defect (F1): the new remedy puts operator and socket into a root shell block without the character check that every other path has. It is a small fix.
Recommendation: fix F1 and merge main, then this is ready for approval. F2 to F4 can follow. The PR cannot merge yet in any case: it conflicts with main, and CI has not run on the merged result.
This post is a comment, not an approval or a change request.
Scope
Karl said my comments should now be addressed here. This covers the fixes for my two review rounds, mainly aecf1122 and 4e7ed354 since my last review at a8a41ac3, and a read of the whole PR diff against its base. #3056 and #3063 came up in the same discussion and are not reviewed here.
Merge state
Conflict with main, confirmed.git merge-tree reports one conflict, at the end of mod tests in crates/minimald/src/net/classifier.rs. Both sides append a test, so the resolution keeps both. The base is 12 commits behind main.
Semantic collisions: none found by reading. In the merged tree create_session keeps its one Ok((session_id, host_ip_fact)), no new caller needs the old return type, and main's rpc.rs change is an unrelated handler. Main does not touch the placement units. I did not compile the merged tree.
CI: every lane aggregator is green at 4e7ed354, on the branch alone.
Threads: my five round-one threads are resolved. My four round-two threads and the foundry thread are open and outdated. minimal-review withholds approval while threads stay open.
Bryan: their last word on the PR predates Karl's A2 ruling. See "Open point" below.

Findings
F1 (medium): the new remedy skips the character check on operator and socket
The comment at :1172 states th
8
e rule:
10BC8
the two names ride in a single-quoted shell word and in one field of /proc/net/unix, so only safe characters are admitted. That check lives in the Cgroup2Mount::Delegated arm, after the early branch at :1086. The --pid <u32> block interpolated no string. Its replacement interpolates both names on the branch that returns before the check.
Failure scenario. The step is installed for the default socket, and a daemon also runs from another state directory:
min --minimal-dir "/tmp/it's" finalize-install
classifier_facts_on_this_host takes the socket from --minimal-dir. The installed unit does not place that daemon, so unplaced_daemon_pid returns its pid and the block renders. Three outcomes follow from the path:
One apostrophe: the quote runs on into the rest of the script handed to sudo sh. At best the run stops there with a syntax error, after any earlier items ran.
A crafted path such as /tmp/x'; cmd; : ': cmd runs as root.
A space: the quoting holds, but awk '$8 == p' never matches, so the step exits 0 with "nothing to place". The item stays failed, and its remedy cannot work.
Limits on the impact. The person chooses --minimal-dir and is already running sudo, and a box cannot reach this path. It matters when another program supplies the value, and because it breaks a rule the code states outright for a block run as root.
Evidence. Confirmed by reading the path. I rendered the line with a stub program and ran it under sh: the apostrophe gives a syntax error (sh -n exits 2 on that line alone), and the crafted path runs the second command. I did not run min itself. The test row at :3217 covers an unsafe socket only with bare facts.
Fix. Check both names in the (Some(pid), _) arms and return Item::cannot with the existing causes. Do not hoist the check above :1086: a healthy install read through an unusual --minimal-dir should stay done. Add a row with unplaced_daemon: Some(..).
F2 (low): no automated test proves the socket unit places a daemon
The one e2e assertion on minimald.slice/daemon follows a hand-run --place-listener. No test under crates/*/tests mentions minimald-place or PLACE_REQUEST_SOCKET. The request's unit test uses a fake listener. The chain that fixes inbox#1206 (daemon connects, systemd starts the template, the placer moves the daemon) runs in CI only incidentally, with no assertion on the result.
Failure scenario. A later edit breaks the unit text. CI stays green, as it did for the boot cycle. Daemons start unplaced, and under A2 their deny-all boxes run unenforced.
Evidence. Confirmed by grep. Today's proof is Bryan's lab scenario 807 and the retests on Karl's host pc.
Fix. After the native case runs the real setup script, restart the daemon and assert its pid is in daemon/cgroup.procs. This touches only scripts/. A follow-up issue is fine.
F3 (low): a third false "refused" message, not listed in #3067
The units-missing cause says "a daemon restart can leave deny-all boxes refused". Under Karl's A2 ruling a restart leaves an unplaced daemon whose deny-all box runs unenforced. #3067 says two messages state the opposite and lists advisory_text and host_ip_box_outcome. This is a third.
Failure scenario. Someone disables and stops the placement socket, then the daemon restarts unplaced. --show says boxes are refused, while a deny-all box reaches the network.
Evidence. Confirmed in the text. The outcome is what Bryan measured on both distros. The line is outside this PR's diff, so it should not change here.
F4 (low): the PR body no longer describes the code
The "Changed messages" table still says the block runs --pid <pid>. It quotes a log line that a8a41ac3 replaced ("the placement unit answered this daemon's placement request"). It has no row for the two new --show states from 74a85232. Fix item 1 still says the reply reads the node fact after the create, which 4e7ed354 changed.
AGENTS.md asks for each new message, its condition and what pins it to be stated, so this is the record a reviewer checks text against. Squash commits on main carry the commit list, not the PR body, so the history is not affected.
Fix. Update the table and item 1.
Nits
N1.crates/minimald/src/rpc.rs:489 still says the reply reads "the daemon's one node fact once the manager has created the box", which 4e7ed354 changed. The comment at :548 does not parse in its last clause. "Never reaches the reply" also overclaims: create_host_ip_fact falls back to the stored fact when the re-read does not run (box_manager.rs:176).
N2.4e7ed354 adds no test, so nothing pins "the reply states its own gate's fact". It also adds a second channel and a panic path (box_manager.rs:504). Returning (id, fact) through the existing responder, with the two wrappers dropping the fact, looks simpler, though I did not trace how far that responder type reaches. create_box_with_spec and create_fresh_box_with_spec now have only test callers, so tests take the None path that production never does.
N3.install-host-classifier.sh.prev appears only in the block. --undo (resolver.rs:3718), the install.sh remedy and the e2e teardown do not remove it. A block killed between the copy and the step leaves it, and then rmdir of the directory fails quietly. The spec says --undo removes everything the step installed. .new has the same gap already.
N4. Printed text. The script comment at finalize_install.rs:1108 uses "leaf", "the step" and "holder", which are design words in text a person reads. :1303 keeps the "no inotify watch" narration from my round-two nit: the reply's rg covered only minimald. The item says both "placement unit" (:1192) and "placement socket" for what a reader sees as one thing.
N5. The block's last line (:1361) runs the step directly, where systemctl start used to send its output to the journal. Its note lines now reach the terminal on a normal install, for example no process holds <socket>: nothing to place. They read fine and appear after the prompt, not before a shell, but they are new text the PR's table does not list.
This PR lands with the known gap. On an unplaced daemon the advisory says the box is refused, while the box runs and reaches the network. Bryan measured that on both distros and wanted it to fail closed before shipping. Karl ruled to keep A2 and fix the text in #3067, which is open, depends on this PR, and has no linked PR that I could find.
The ruling is consistent with spec 18: the NET-079 sub-requirements cover a host that cannot decide per box with a recorded state and an advisory, and design §7.4 expects no per-box enforcement until the step is installed. This PR also makes the state rarer. My view: it need not block this PR, but #3067 should land before the next release is cut, because until then the tool tells a person a false thing about an egress boundary.
What looks right
The inbox#1205 fix. The reply now states the fact the create's own gate read, and the gate re-reads only on ProbeUnreadable. The new rpc test covers both outcomes. Moving the start-up reading after placement removes the race at its source on hosts with the unit.
Socket pair.StandardOutput=journal keeps script output off the connection, so the daemon's read ends only on close. The placement path reads nothing from stdin, so a connection carries no input to the root process.
Confused-deputy guards. The placer still finds the daemon from net/unix and fd tables, never from the connection. Another uid and anything under the slice are left alone.
Bounded wait. A slow or absent placer delays start by at most 5 s, and a late placement is picked up by the re-read.
Rollback in the block. The status is captured first in the else, the previous copy goes back, and a test runs the real block through run_confined, so Karl's merge-order note on #3056 is honoured.
Upgrade path. A host that still has the path unit reads as not done, the block removes that pair, and --undo and install.sh handle either layout one unit at a time.
Design.gominimal/arch asks for a one-time privileged step with no prompt at session start, and nothing in it prescribes a path unit. The new reporting goes to --show and the log, so no line appears before the shell. The spec wording change has Karl's approval.
Confirmed, inferred and not checked
Confirmed from code: F1 to F4, the nits, and the table above, read at 4e7ed354. The conflict comes from git merge-tree.
Taken from others' reports, not reproduced: every host result (the retests on Karl's host pc, posted by the PR's agent, and Bryan's lab).
Inferred:
A box cannot reach /run/minimald-place.sock. The sandbox binds its own /run (crates/sandbox/src/lib.rs:2176), and I did not trace every box mode. The placer's guards hold either way.
The last two commits have had no host run. The latest host result I found names a8a41ac3, so the --place-listener remedy has not been exercised on a real unplaced daemon. A quick run on pc would settle it.
systemd behaviour beyond those reports comes from knowledge of it, not a run.
Accepted scope: a daemon under a second --minimal-dir is never placed at start, and the --show remedy places it only until its next restart. The spec's rationale says one unit per host today, and the agent's reply to CodeRabbit says the same.
Not checked:
Nothing was built or run: minimald does not build natively on macOS, and I did not run just test-cross.
Vale could not run, because the export lacks the ste style. The PR body says it was not run there either, so cli-min.md and spec 18 have no prose lint result that I know of.
Norrie's third review of #3026 (F1): the --place-listener remedy for a
running daemon outside its leaf put `operator` and `socket` into the
root block on a branch that returns before the character check the
install path applies. A --minimal-dir with an apostrophe broke the
script handed to `sudo sh`, a crafted one could run a command as root,
and one with a space rendered a remedy that never matched the socket.
The check moves into unsafe_name_cause, which both the install arm and
the unplaced-daemon arms use. An unsafe name with an unplaced daemon is
now the same Cannot item with the same causes and no block; a healthy
install read under such a name stays done, and starting a stopped
socket names neither. New rows cover the crafted path, an apostrophe, a
space and an empty name, with and without a stopped socket.
Also from the review:
- N1: the create reply's comments say it states the fact its own
create returned, and when that read falls back to the stored fact.
- N4: the block's printed comments use plain words for the cgroup and
the socket owner, drop the inotify narration, and name the placement
socket consistently.

Merge main. Done in d79ab49f. The one conflict, at the end of mod tests in net/classifier.rs, kept both tests. The merged tree builds, clippy -D warnings and fmt are clean, and cargo nextest run -p minimal -p minimald on pc passes 2364/2370. The 6 failures need root (5 netns tests) or are gominimal/inbox#1215, which #3100 fixes.
F1 (medium), fixed in 86021736. The character check moved into unsafe_name_cause, used by both the install arm and the unplaced-daemon arms. With an unplaced daemon, an unsafe operator or socket now gives the same cannot item with the existing causes, and no block is rendered. As you asked, the check is not hoisted. A healthy install read under such a name stays done, and starting a stopped socket names neither name. classifier_item_table has new rows: your crafted /tmp/x'; touch /pwned; : '/ssh.sock, an apostrophe, a space, and empty names. Each row runs with the socket listening and with it stopped, and asserts Cannot and script == None.
F2. Filed as a follow-up (linked below). F3. Added to #3067 with its test pin. F4. The PR body is updated:
Fix item 1 now describes the returned fact.
The this step: row shows --place-listener and the name check.
New rows cover the socket-down state, both states together, the no-systemctl note, and the step's notes now printed to the terminal (N5).
The log row has the placed / not-placed split from a8a41ac3.
Nits:
N1: fixed. The rpc.rs comments say the reply states the fact its own create returned, and that the read falls back to the stored fact only when the re-read fails.
N4: fixed. The block's printed comments say "egress-enforcement cgroup" and "the process that owns its socket". The inotify narration is gone, including the test comment. The printed text says "placement socket" throughout.
N5: listed in the body's table.
N2 and N3: in the follow-up issue. N2 is the single-responder alternative and a test pinning the reply's own fact. N3 is --undo not removing .prev/.new.
About b6fde312: it was my commit with a non-conventional subject. I amended it to aecf1122 for commitlint, and the tree was identical.
Not yet done: a host run of the --place-listener remedy on a really unplaced daemon. It needs sudo on pc to move the daemon out first, and I've asked Karl.
Host run of the --place-listener remedy on pc at 86021736: pass. This is the check Norrie listed as not yet done ("the --place-listener remedy has not been exercised on a real unplaced daemon").
min/minimald were built from 86021736 (0.8.0-dev.434.g86021736). The installed step copy is current: scripts/install-host-classifier.sh is unchanged since a8a41ac3.

Fixes two placement problems with the same unit: the first deny-all
host_ipcreate after a daemon start was told the box is refused (gominimal/inbox#1205), and on SELinux hosts the placement unit never placed a restarted daemon (gominimal/inbox#1206). One PR, one commit per change, plus a merge of main.Root cause
#1205: the create reply answered from the stale start-up fact
Proven from code.
create_session_rpc(crates/minimald/src/rpc.rs) copiedhost_ip_enforcement_fact()and builtclassifier_advisoryandhost_ip_enforcementfrom it before it called the manager. The manager's create (create_host_ip_fact,box_manager.rs, added in T131 — A native host-address box's probe and launch refusal read the box's own state #2965) re-reads the host when the held fact isProbeUnreadable. So the reply still carried the stale fact's advisory even when the re-read had just found that the host decides per box. The new test fails on main with the exact advisory from the issue (...so it refuses to start the box ... the classifier table's effect could not be read...).decide_nowran atmain.rs:986, before the bind at line 1316. The path unit fires when the socket is created, so the start-up reading always came before placement. That was not a race, it happened on every start. T131 — A native host-address box's probe and launch refusal read the box's own state #2965 moved the reading to after the bind. That turned it into a race the reading still almost always loses.Missing log lines: proven from code, already fixed on main by #2965. At f6fcbab the start-up reading (
main.rs:986) ran beforelogger.activate(main.rs:1095). Untilactivate, the file layer is an inertreload::Layer(None)(logging.rs), and a detached daemon's console is/dev/null. So the probe'sread the classifier table's effect on this hostline, thebecause, and the start line went nowhere. On main the reading runs after the bind, and the bind comes afteractivate, so those lines reachminimald.log. No change was needed here.Hypothesis, not proven. The issue says the first deny-all box "was refused". The client only prints the advisory; it never refuses (
print_classifier_advisory). The launch re-reads the host and refuses a deny-all box only when the box is placed and its own fresh read gives a probe cause (refused_unenforced_host_address_box). So what Karl saw was most likely the stale advisory text, not a refusal by the launch. See also "For Karl" below.#1206: systemd may not watch a socket under the account's home
Proven from the AVC in the issue, together with the unit text.
minimald-place.pathusedPathChanged=<ssh.sock>. On SELinux,init_tis deniedwatchon agconf_home_tsock_file. The first placement only worked because, before the socket existed, systemd was watching the parent directory.Fix
fix(minimald)): the create reply states the fact its own create's gate read.create_host_ip_factre-reads the host when the stored fact isProbeUnreadable, and the manager returns that fact with the box's id (create_box_reporting_fact), so the reply never reads the global fact again after another create or launch may have refreshed it. If the re-read itself fails, the gate and the reply both use the stored fact. A host where the re-read still cannot read the table keeps the advisory. The launch still refuses a box it places as before, so enforcement is not weakened.fix(classifier)):min finalize-installnow installsminimald-place.socketinstead of the path pair. It is a systemd-held socket at/run/minimald-place.sockwithSocketUser=<operator>,SocketMode=0600andAccept=yes. Each connection starts the templateminimald-place@.service, which runs the step's--place-listeneras root. An install that still carries the path pair reads as not done, somin finalize-installoffers the upgrade.--undoand theinstall.shuninstall advice disable only the units a host actually has, becausesystemctlrefuses a whole call that names a missing unit. NET spec sub-requirement (placement unit) wording anddocs/reference/cli-min.mdare updated to match.feat(classifier)): "daemon not placed" is now its own state.boxes/deny/filter-probe-<pid>leaf was left behind. The new teardown diagnostics (test(e2e)) found it. A daemon stopped in the middle of its start-up probe leaves that leaf, and the window is wider now that the reading runs after placement.--uninstallnowrmdirs empty probe leaves only. A box's own leaf still stops the uninstall (fix(classifier): sweep the probe's leftover leaves, pinned inhost_classifier_tree_installed). A comment fix from minimal-review is also included.fix(classifier), Karl approved): the finalize block moved the newinstall-host-classifier.shover/usr/local/lib/minimal/install-host-classifier.shbefore the step ran. A refused run (a ct-mark conflict, say) stops the block before the units, so the old boot and placement units stayed while the copy they run was already the refusing version, and the next reboot did not restore enforcement. The block now keeps the previous copy asinstall-host-classifier.sh.prev, moves the new one in, and runs it. On success the kept copy is removed. On failure the previous copy goes back (on a first install the new copy is removed) and the block exits with the step's status, so the copy, the units and the tree record stay as they were. The step still runs from its installed path, so the hint in its refusal (built from$0) names a file that exists.mod testsinnet/classifier.rs, by keeping both): origin/main (with fix(classifier): decode masked ct-mark writes in the install's conflict scan #3004, the Tailscale ct-mark decode and xt-target masks ininstall-host-classifier.sh) is merged into this branch as a merge commit, so the classifier step no longer refuses on every Tailscale host. The merge was clean. The script keeps both fix(classifier): decode masked ct-mark writes in the install's conflict scan #3004's decode and this PR's comment changes and probe-leaf sweep.Item 3 of the #1206 brief, the re-read covering the window after a restart: an unplaced daemon reads
ProbeUnreadable, which is exactly the cause the create re-reads on. The rpc test below covers both the case where the re-read decides and the case where it stays unreadable.Changed messages
