fix: preserve alpha on export (#16) and render flattened composite (#17) - #57

…osite (gimp-mcp#17) Two related bugs, both caused by using Gimp.Image.flatten(): gimp-mcp#16 - _export_to_path() called flatten() for every format. flatten() discards the alpha channel, so PNG/WEBP/TIFF exports came out with an opaque background even when the image had transparency. flatten() is only the right call for JPEG, which has no alpha; alpha-capable formats now use merge_visible_layers(CLIP_TO_IMAGE), which composites visible layers while keeping alpha. gimp-mcp#17 - get_image_bitmap() read from images[0] directly, so it returned only the top layer instead of the visible composite. It now works on a flattened duplicate (merge_visible_layers, again to keep alpha) and deletes that duplicate in the cleanup path.
WalkthroughThe plugin now renders bitmap regions from all visible layers. Export keeps alpha for non-JPEG formats and flattens only JPEG output. Temporary composite images are deleted during bitmap cleanup. ChangesImage compositing and export

Move composite cleanup to the method-level finally block.
get_image_bitmap requests reach _get_current_image_bitmap, where a partial region such as {"origin_x": 0} returns before the export finally block. A merge_visible_layers() exception also occurs before composite_to_delete receives the duplicate. Both paths can retain the duplicate image. Initialize composite_to_delete before duplication, assign the duplicate before merging, and delete it from an outer finally that covers the full method. Keep the existing inner finally for temporary export images and files.

Fixes #16 and Fixes #17. Both come from the same root cause:
Gimp.Image.flatten()discards the alpha channel, and it was being used in two places where alpha matters.#16 — PNG/WEBP/TIFF exports lose transparency
_export_to_path()calledflatten()for every format whenflatten=True. That is correct for JPEG (no alpha channel) but wrong for alpha-capable formats: a transparent background came out opaque.Alpha-capable formats now use
merge_visible_layers(CLIP_TO_IMAGE), which composites visible layers the same way but keeps alpha. JPEG still usesflatten().#17 —
get_image_bitmapreturns only the top layerIt read from
images[0]directly, so on a multi-layer image the returned bitmap was just the top layer, not what the canvas shows. It now operates on a duplicate that has been merged with
merge_visible_layers(CLIP_TO_IMAGE)(again, to keep alpha), and deletes that duplicate in the existing cleanup path.Note, not included here
While debugging this I also found the client-side socket timeout (
gimp_mcp_server.py,settimeout(10)) too short for large images — a bigexport_imagecan exceed it. I left that out to keep this PR to one topic; happy to open a separate PR if you'd like it raised.Summary by CodeRabbit
