Fix close_image and set_active_image on GIMP 3.2 by tracking displays - #52

Both tools called Gimp.get_displays(), which does not exist in the GIMP 3.x
Python bindings, so every call raised:
'gi.repository.Gimp' object has no attribute 'get_displays'
There is no drop-in replacement. GIMP 3.2 offers no way to enumerate displays
(the PDB exposes only gimp-display-new/delete/present/flush) and no way to map
a display back to an image -- Gimp.Display carries a single 'id' property and
has no get_image(). The old code called display.get_image(), which would have
failed even if enumeration had worked.
Since displays cannot be discovered, the plugin now remembers the ones it
creates: image id -> Gimp.Display, populated in new_canvas and open_image, and
revalidated with Gimp.Display.id_is_valid() so entries the user closed by hand
in the GIMP UI are dropped rather than handed back stale.
close_image now deletes the display, which frees the image with it. This
ordering matters: image.delete() returns False and silently no-ops while a
display is still attached, so the previous code could not have closed a
displayed image even once enumeration was fixed.
Images opened by hand in the GIMP UI have no tracked display. Those now return
an explicit error naming the limitation instead of raising AttributeError.

WalkthroughThe plugin now tracks displays created for images. It validates tracked display ids before use. Image activation and closure use the registry instead of the unavailable ChangesDisplay tracking and image operations

GIMP 3.0 libgimp Gimp.Display.delete return value image remains valid multiple displays
💡 Result:
In GIMP 3.0, the Gimp.Display.delete method returns a gboolean value, which is TRUE if the display was successfully deleted and FALSE otherwise [1][2]. Regarding your concern about the image remaining valid when multiple displays are active: the Gimp.Display.delete procedure removes only the specified display instance [1][2]. The underlying image remains valid as long as at least one other display is still associated with it [1][2]. However, if the display you are deleting is the last remaining display associated with that image, GIMP will delete the image as well [1][2]. It is recommended to ensure your data is saved before calling this procedure, as the display is closed regardless of whether the image is considered "dirty" (has unsaved changes) or not [1][2]. Additionally, Gimp.Display.delete is intended for use with the GIMP user interface and will trigger an execution error if invoked in a context where GIMP has no UI [2][3].

Check that _close_image closes the image before returning success. Gimp.Display.delete() deletes only the resolved display. Another display can keep the image valid, but this branch removes _displays and returns success without checking the delete result or image.is_valid(). After Gimp.displays_flush(), return an error when the image remains valid.

Thanks for this. I hit the same Confirmed on 3.2.6: A few differences in my version that you may want to consider:
Tested over MCP on 3.2.6 with throwaway, unsaved images:
Happy to leave this with you. If you would rather I push these as suggestions against your branch, let me know. |

Tested commit I created a canvas through the plugin, activated it, closed it, and then checked I only tested the plugin-created image path, not an image opened manually in GIMP. |
Fixes #51.
Why this is not a one-line rename
Gimp.get_displays()has no equivalent in GIMP 3.2. I checked the live bindings on 3.2.4:Gimpexposes onlyDisplay,default_display,displays_flush,displays_reconnect— no enumeration.gimp-display-new,gimp-display-delete,gimp-display-present,gimp-display-id-is-valid,gimp-display-get-window-handle,gimp-displays-flush,gimp-displays-reconnect. Nothing lists displays.Gimp.Display.list_properties()returns exactly one property,id. There is noget_image().That last point matters: the old code called
display.get_image(), so it had two broken calls stacked. Even a working enumeration would not have let it match a display to an image. There is also a sequencing bug underneath. On 3.2.4:
So
image.delete()no-ops while a display is attached. The previous code could not have closed a displayed image even with enumeration working.Approach
Since displays cannot be discovered, the plugin now remembers the ones it creates:
image_id -> Gimp.Display, populated innew_canvasandopen_image._get_tracked_display()revalidates throughGimp.Display.id_is_valid()before returning, so an entry whose window the user closed by hand is dropped rather than handed back as a dangling object.close_imagedeletes the display, which frees the image with it.Known limitation
Images opened by hand in the GIMP UI have no tracked display.
close_imageandset_active_imageon those now return an explicit error naming the reason instead of raisingAttributeError:I could not find a way around this within GIMP 3.2's API. If there is one I missed, I am happy to rework it — an honest error seemed better than an exception in the meantime.
Verification
Tested against a running GIMP 3.2.4 on Windows 10, over MCP:
set_active_image, plugin-created imageAttributeErrorclose_image, plugin-created imageAttributeErrorlist_imagesclose_image, hand-opened imageAttributeErrorset_active_image, hand-opened imageAttributeErrorAlso checked that image ids are monotonic on 3.2.4 (closing image 3 then creating another yields 4, not 3), so stale tracking entries cannot collide with a live image. The
id_is_valid()check is defensive rather than load-bearing.python -m py_compilepasses.ruff checkgoes from 183 to 182 findings on this file — no new violations, one removed.Summary by CodeRabbit
