We cancelled a booking for two adults…
We cancelled a booking for two adults and a baby approximately 6 hours before the reservation due to a viral infection, yet the restaurant still chose to charge £10 per person — including for the baby — totalling £30.
What is most disappointing is not simply the charge itself, but the complete lack of professionalism, empathy, and accountability shown throughout the interaction. The restaurant had multiple tables available, so enforcing the charge in these circumstances felt unreasonable and opportunistic. As we do not live nearby and will not be returning to the area, offering a credit note was meaningless.
My wife was spoken to rudely over the phone when trying to resolve the matter. The restaurant repeatedly attempted to blame the bank for the inability to reverse the charge, while the bank clearly confirmed that the restaurant itself had the authority to cancel it. Rather than handling the situation respectfully, the staff member ultimately hung up the call.
Charging a cancellation fee for a sick family, including a charge for a baby, while showing no compassion or basic customer service, reflects very poorly on the business. A restaurant that treats customers as a source of guaranteed income rather than people does not deserve repeat business or recommendations. We will not be returning and would strongly discourage others from supporting a business that handles customers in this manner.
